The effect of timing errors in optical digital systems

The effects of imperfect timing in direct detection (non-coherent) optical binary systems using both PPM and on-off keying for bit transmission are investigated. Particular emphasis is placed on specification of timing accuracy, and an examination of system degradation when this accuracy is not attained. Bit error probabilities are shown as a function of timing errors, from which average error probabilities can be computed for specific synchronization methods. Of significant importance is the presence of a residual, or irreducible error probability in both systems, due entirely to the timing system, that cannot be overcome by the data channel.

Bias and spread in extreme value theory measurements of probability of error

Extreme value theory is examined to explain the cause of the bias and spread in performance of communications systems characterized by low bit rates and high data reliability requirements, for cases in which underlying noise is Gaussian or perturbed Gaussian. Experimental verification is presented and procedures that minimize these effects are suggested. Even under these conditions, however, extreme value theory test results are not particularly more significant than bit error rate tests.

Delta modulation

The conclusions of the design research of the song adaptive delta modulator are presented for source encoding voice signals. The variation of output SNR vs input signal power/when 8, 9, and 10 bit internal arithmetic is employed. Voice intelligibility tapes to test the 10-bit system are used. An analysis of a delta modulator is also presented designed to minimize the in-band rms error. This is accomplished by frequency shaping the error signal in the modulator prior to hard limiting. The result is a significant increase in the output SNR measured after low pass filtering.

Characterization of impulse noise and analysis of its effect upon correlation receivers

A noise model is formulated to describe the impulse noise in many digital systems. A simplified model, which assumes that each noise burst contains a randomly weighted version of the same basic waveform, is used to derive the performance equations for a correlation receiver. The expected number of bit errors per noise burst is expressed as a function of the average signal energy, signal-set correlation coefficient, bit time, noise-weighting-factor variance and probability density function, and a time range function which depends on the crosscorrelation of the signal-set basis functions and the noise waveform. A procedure is established for extending the results for the simplified noise model to the general model. Unlike the performance results for Gaussian noise, it is shown that for impulse noise the error performance is affected by the choice of signal-set basis functions and that Orthogonal signaling is not equivalent to On-Off signaling with the same average energy.

Performance of convolution coding concatenated with MFSK modulation in a Gaussian channel

The improvement in db due to concatenation over conventional M-ary coding is studied to reduce the probability of a bit error and to increase the available bit rate for the same system parameters of error rate, transmitter power, and range. The results of calculations for orthogonal modulation with noncoherent detection and Q-level correlator quantization are presented. It is shown that the correlator outputs are quantized to one of the Q levels, and the receiver output is a vector consisting of a list of the M correlator quantum levels. The channel has Q(M) possible outputs and M possible inputs. Optimum output is approached by increasing fine quantization

Minimum impulse tests of 0.45-N liquid hydrazine catalytic thrusters

An exploratory test series was conducted on three types of 0.45-N (0.1 lbf) liquid hydrazine thrusters to ascertain the minimum impulse bit capability for this class of engine. The test series is described and the results are presented. The testing was performed at 21 and 145 C (70 and 300 F) while maintaining nominal 0.45 N (0.1 lbf) upstream conditions. Valve on-times as low as 0.008 sec were applied. Impulse bits were observed for thruster temperatures of 21 and 145 C (70 and 300 F), respectively.

Bias and spread in EVT performance tests.

Performance tests (error probability measurements) of communications systems characterized by low bit rates and high reliability requirements frequently utilize classical extreme value theory (EVT) to avoid the excessive test times encountered with bit error rate (BER) tests. If the underlying noise is Gaussian or perturbed Gaussian, the EVT error estimates have either excessive bias or excessive variance if an insufficient number of test samples is used. EVT is examined to explain the cause of this bias and spread. Experimental verification is made by testing a known Gaussian source, and procedures that minimize these effects are described. It seems apparent that even under the best of conditions the EVT test results are not particularly better than those of BER tests.

On the timing problem in optical PPM communications.

Investigation of the effects of imperfect timing in a direct-detection (noncoherent) optical system using pulse-position-modulation bits. Special emphasis is placed on specification of timing accuracy, and an examination of system degradation when this accuracy is not attained. Bit error probabilities are shown as a function of timing errors, from which average error probabilities can be computed for specific synchronization methods. Of significant importance is shown to be the presence of a residual, or irreducible error probability, due entirely to the timing system, that cannot be overcome by the data channel.

Performance results for a hybrid coding system.

Results of computer simulation studies of the hybrid pull-up bootstrap decoding algorithm, using a constraint length 24, nonsystematic, rate 1/2 convolutional code for the symmetric channel with both binary and eight-level quantized outputs. Computational performance was used to measure the effect of several decoder parameters and determine practical operating constraints. Results reveal that the track length may be reduced to 500 information bits with small degradation in performance. The optimum number of tracks per block was found to be in the range from 7 to 11. An effective technique was devised to efficiently allocate computational effort and identify reliably decoded data sections. Long simulations indicate that a practical bootstrap decoding configuration has a computational performance about 1.0 dB better than sequential decoding and an output bit error rate about .0000025 near the R sub comp point.

A simple branch synchronizer for convolutional decoders.

A simple branch synchronizer for rate 1/3, constraint length five, nonsystematic convolutional code is described. The scheme derives the sync information from the received channel bits, thus avoiding the extra formatting of the sync data at the transmitter and receiver, and increasing the data rate. The synchronizer detects the proper sync bits for both the in-phase and phase ambiguous cases. The design is adaptable to nonsystematic codes of different constraint lengths.

Spatial transform coding of color images.

The application of the transform-coding concept to the coding of color images represented by three primary color planes of data is discussed. The principles of spatial transform coding are reviewed and the merits of various methods of color-image representation are examined. A performance analysis is presented for the color-image transform-coding system. Results of a computer simulation of the coding system are also given. It is shown that, by transform coding, the chrominance content of a color image can be coded with an average of 1.0 bits per element or less without serious degradation. If luminance coding is also employed, the average rate reduces to about 2.0 bits per element or less.

A translator and simulator for the Burroughs D machine

The D Machine is described as a small user microprogrammable computer designed to be a versatile building block for such diverse functions as: disk file controllers, I/O controllers, and emulators. TRANSLANG is an ALGOL-like language, which allows D Machine users to write microprograms in an English-like format as opposed to creating binary bit pattern maps. The TRANSLANG translator parses TRANSLANG programs into D Machine microinstruction bit patterns which can be executed on the D Machine simulator. In addition to simulation and translation, the two programs also offer several debugging tools, such as: a full set of diagnostic error messages, register dumps, simulated memory dumps, traces on instructions and groups of instructions, and breakpoints.

Pulsed plasma solid propellant microthruster for the synchronous meteorological satellite. Task 4: Engineering model fabrication and test report

Two flight prototype solid propellant pulsed plasma microthruster propulsion systems for the SMS satellite were fabricated, assembled and tested. The propulsion system is a completely self contained system requiring only three electrical inputs to operate: a 29.4 volt power source, a 28 volt enable signal and a 50 millsec long command fire signal that can be applied at any rate from 50 ppm to 110 ppm. The thrust level can be varied over a range 2.2 to 1 at constant impulse bit amplitude. By controlling the duration of the 28 volt enable either steady state thrust or a series of discrete impulse bits can be generated. A new technique of capacitor charging was implemented to reduce high voltage stress on energy storage capacitors.
