Baysian recursive image estimation.

Discussion of a statistical procedure for treatment of noise-affected images to recover unaffected images by recursive processing with noise background elimination. The feasibility of the application of a recursive linear Kalman filtering technique to image processing is demonstrated. The procedure is applicable to images which are characterized statistically by mean and correlation functions. A time invariant dynamic model is proposed to provide stationary statistics for the scanner output.

Spectral factorization in periodically time-varying systems and application to navigation problems.

Spectral factorization has been used previously to derive the steady-state solution of Kalman filtering equations without iteration for constant coefficient systems. The present work extends the spectral factorization algorithm to time-varying systems having periodic coefficient matrices for cases of both discrete and continuous systems. Time-consuming, expensive iterations of sequential covariance equations are not required to reach the final solution since this is an algebraic algorithm employing existing eigenvalue, eigenvector subroutines. The computer program incorporating the algorithm is suitable for sensitivity studies in formulating navigation and guidance strategies of low-thrust interplanetary missions. The determination of an optimum tracking pattern from an earth station is examined as an example.

Bayesian recursive image estimation.

The enhancement of images that are characterized only by statistical data where the picture contains additive noise is considered. The random process representing the output of the scanner is characterized by the output of a dynamic system with white noise input. The dynamic system describes a first-order vector-Markov process. The procedure of Kalman filtering is then utilized to recursively determine the minimum mean-square error estimate of the image. The result is then extended to obtain the smoothing of the data.

Near optimum digital phase locked loops.

Near optimum digital phase locked loops are derived utilizing nonlinear estimation theory. Nonlinear approximations are employed to yield realizable loop structures. Baseband equivalent loop gains are derived which under high signal to noise ratio conditions may be calculated off-line. Additional simplifications are made which permit the application of the Kalman filter algorithms to determine the optimum loop filter. Performance is evaluated by a theoretical analysis and by simulation. Theoretical and simulated results are discussed and a comparison to analog results is made.

A comparison of the effects of small nonlinearities on several estimation schemes.

A variety of techniques are available for estimating the states of nonlinear dynamic systems from noisy data. These procedures are generally equivalent when applied to linear systems. This paper investigates the difference between several of these procedures in the presence of small dynamic and observational nonlinearities. In particular, it examines one least square batch processing algorithm, and three recursive algorithms similar to the Kalman filter. To first order, all the estimators have the same covariance. Expressions for the means, however, show that each estimator has a different bias. The examples presented show that the biases can be a strong function of such parameters as initial covariances and number of data points being considered.

Space Shuttle landing navigation using precision distance measuring equipment.

Precision distance measuring equipment (DME) aiding onboard inertial navigation can be used to meet the stringent landing navigation requirements of the Space Shuttle. The required accuracy is achieved by using a ten-state-variable Kalman filter to process the measured range and delta-range data from the DME. The DME transponders are required to meet the accuracy requirements: two are deployed under the final approach path and one is deployed to the side. Failure considerations require deployment of additional redundant transponders. Initialization of the landing navigation after hypersonic entry is accomplished using the transponders at the airport.

Identification of rotating assembly inertial and bearing parameters.

The problem of estimating the state of a turbopump rotating assembly and identifying unknown products of inertia and unknown bearing parameters is considered. A linearized, extended Kalman filtering approach has been used and found to be successful for both state estimation and parameter identification in an inherently nonlinear problem. The input data were simulated Bently test data obtained from a verified 12-dimensional state-space model and were compared with real Bently test data obtained from NASA. The results prove the feasibility of using this model and this type of test data to obtain the hidden parameters of a typical turbopump rotating assembly.

Ion thruster thermal characteristics and performance.

Experimental and analytical results for a typical 20-cm-diam, hollow-cathode ion thrustor are reported. The foundation of the investigation was the application of thermal model correction techniques. Pertinent thermal properties and plasma heating characteristics of the thrustor were determined through correlation and integration of temperature measurement data with a single-state Wiener-Kalman filter. The thrustor self-heating levels on various parts were realistically estimated. Analytically predicted temperatures were forced to agree with the measured values for the purpose of constructing a corrected thermal model, which could then be used to evaluate more realistic thrustor circumstances and environments. The expected accuracy of the resultant analytical network model was demonstrated to be plus or minus 10 K. Thrustor thermal performance data for a typical five-thrustor array are presented as functions of environmental solar intensities. The thermal analyses are also extended to a 30-cm thrustor system.

On the adaptive control of linear systems using the open-loop-feedback-optimal approach.

This paper considers the suboptimal stochastic control of linear discrete-time dynamical systems with unknown or stochastically varying parameters. The suboptimal scheme is based upon the use of the open-loop-feedback-optimal (O.L.F.O.) method. The state and parameter estimates are generated by an extended Kalman filter algorithm. Numerical results for first order systems are presented.

Recursive ideal observer detection of known M-ary signals in multiplicative and additive Gaussian noise.

This paper presents the derivation of the recursive algorithms necessary for real-time digital detection of M-ary known signals that are subject to independent multiplicative and additive Gaussian noises. The motivating application is minimum probability of error detection of digital data-link messages aboard civil aircraft in the earth reflection multipath environment. For each known signal, the detector contains one Kalman filter and one probability computer. The filters estimate the multipath disturbance. The estimates and the received signal drive the probability computers. Outputs of all the computers are compared in amplitude to give the signal decision. The practicality and usefulness of the detector are extensively discussed.

New mechanization equations for aided inertial navigation systems

Inertial navigation equations are developed which use area navigation (RNAV) waypoints and runway references as coodinate centers. The formulation is designed for aided inertial navigation systems and gives a high numerical accuracy through all phases of flight. A new formulation of the error equations for inertial navigation systems is also presented. This new formulation reduces numerical calculations in the use of Kalman filters for aided inertial navigation systems.

Multi-input, multi-output regulator design for constant disturbances and non-zero set points with application to automatic landing in a crosswind

Undesirable steady offsets result when a stationary, linear regulator using state feedback is subjected to constant disturbances and/or non-zero setspoints. To eliminate these offsets, the disturbances and non-zero setpoints can be fed forward to the control. Only when the number of outputs is less than or equal to the number of control inputs can the outputs be maintained at arbitrary non-zero setpoints. The state and the disturbance may be estimated using a constant gain Kalman filter or by modeling the constant disturbances as exponentially correlated processes with long correlation times.

Helicopter derivative identification from analytic models and flight test data

Recent results of stability derivative identification from helicopter analytic models and flight test data are presented. Six and nine degree-of-freedom (DOF) linear models are identified from an analytic nonlinear helicopter simulation using a least square technique. The identified models are compared with the convectional partial differentiation method for obtaining derivatives to form the basis for interpretation of derivatives identified from flight data. Six degree-of-freedom models are identified from CH-53A and CH-54B flight data, using an extended Kalman filter modified to process several maneuvers simultaneously. The a priori derivative estimate is obtained by optimal filtering of the data and then using a least square method. The results demonstrate that a six DOF identified model is sufficient to determine the low frequency modes of motion, but a nine DOF rotor/body model is necessary for proper representation of short-term response.

A guidance and navigation system for continuous low thrust vehicles

A midcourse guidance and navigation system for continuous low thrust vehicles is described. A set of orbit elements, known as the equinoctial elements, are selected as the state variables. The uncertainties are modelled statistically by random vector and stochastic processes. The motion of the vehicle and the measurements are described by nonlinear stochastic differential and difference equations respectively. A minimum time nominal trajectory is defined and the equation of motion and the measurement equation are linearized about this nominal trajectory. An exponential cost criterion is constructed and a linear feedback guidance law is derived to control the thrusting direction of the engine. Using this guidance law, the vehicle will fly in a trajectory neighboring the nominal trajectory. The extended Kalman filter is used for state estimation. Finally a short mission using this system is simulated. The results indicate that this system is very efficient for short missions.

Study of effects of uncertainties on comet and asteroid encounter and contact guidance requirements. Part 1: Guidance and navigation studies

A guidance algorithm that provides precise rendezvous in the deterministic case while requiring only relative state information is developed. A navigation scheme employing only onboard relative measurements is built around a Kalman filter set in measurement coordinates. The overall guidance and navigation procedure is evaluated in the face of measurement errors by a detailed numerical simulation. Results indicate that onboard guidance and navigation for the terminal phase of rendezvous is possible with reasonable limits on measurement errors.
