Codes for QPSK modulation with invariance under 90 degrees rotation

The new rate 1/2 nonlinear convolutional codes for quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation allow the achievement of full 90 degree rotational invariance of coded QPSK signal sequences at no significant loss in real coding gains when compared to linear codes. For mobile communication systems operating in a fading environment with frequent periods of low signal-to-noise ratio and the possibility of losses of carrier phase synchronization in the receiver, the invariance to 90 degree ambiguous demodulation should be a significant advantage.

Lunar material transport vehicle

The proposed vehicle, the Lunar Material Transport Vehicle (LMTV), has a mission objective of efficient lunar soil material transport. The LMTV was designed to meet a required set of performance specifications while operating under a given set of constraints. The LMTV is essentially an articulated steering, double-ended dump truck. The vehicle moves on four wheels and has two identical chassis halves. Each half consists of a chassis frame, a material bucket, two wheels with integral curvilinear synchronous motors, a fuel cell and battery arrangement, an electromechanically actuated dumping mechanism, and a powerful microprocessor. The vehicle, as designed, is capable of transporting up to 200 cu ft of material over a one mile round trip per hour. The LMTV is capable of being operated from a variety of sources. The vehicle has been designed as simply as possible with attention also given to secondary usage of components.

The advanced receiver 2: Telemetry test results in CTA 21

Telemetry tests with the Advanced Receiver II (ARX II) in Compatibility Test Area 21 are described. The ARX II was operated in parallel with a Block-III Receiver/baseband processor assembly combination (BLK-III/BPA) and a Block III Receiver/subcarrier demodulation assembly/symbol synchronization assembly combination (BLK-III/SDA/SSA). The telemetry simulator assembly provided the test signal for all three configurations, and the symbol signal to noise ratio as well as the symbol error rates were measured and compared. Furthermore, bit error rates were also measured by the system performance test computer for all three systems. Results indicate that the ARX-II telemetry performance is comparable and sometimes superior to the BLK-III/BPA and BLK-III/SDA/SSA combinations.

Event Driven Messaging with Role-Based Subscriptions

Event Driven Messaging with Role-Based Subscriptions (EDM-RBS) is a framework integrated into the Service Management Database (SMDB) to allow for role-based and subscription-based delivery of synchronous and asynchronous messages over JMS (Java Messaging Service), SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), or SMS (Short Messaging Service). This allows for 24/7 operation with users in all parts of the world. The software classifies messages by triggering data type, application source, owner of data triggering event (mission), classification, sub-classification and various other secondary classifying tags. Messages are routed to applications or users based on subscription rules using a combination of the above message attributes. This program provides a framework for identifying connected users and their applications for targeted delivery of messages over JMS to the client applications the user is logged into. EDMRBS provides the ability to send notifications over e-mail or pager rather than having to rely on a live human to do it. It is implemented as an Oracle application that uses Oracle relational database management system intrinsic functions. It is configurable to use Oracle AQ JMS API or an external JMS provider for messaging. It fully integrates into the event-logging framework of SMDB (Subnet Management Database).

MSL relay coordination and tactical planning in the era of InSight, MAVEN, and TGO

This study examines an approach for optimizing the scheduling of regular relay communications between the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover and the non-sun-synchronous Mars orbiters MAVEN and TGO as well as the impacts of the approaching InSight landing on MSL relay and tactical planning. Rover operations require knowledge of recently executed activities, termed decisional data, in order to inform tactical activity planning. As a result, timely and routine data return is critical for nominal rover operations. Mars orbiters are used as relay assets to achieve such timeliness.

Demonstration of Power System Black Start with Hydropower Generator and Battery Energy Storage: Preprint

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are an important asset for power systems with high integration levels of renewable energy, and they can be controlled to provide various services to the grid. This paper presents the hardware demonstration and characterization of using a utility-scale BESS with grid-following (GFL) and grid-forming (GFM) controls and a run-of-river (ROR) hydropower plant to perform a bottom-up power system black start that enhances power systems' resiliency. ROR hydropower plants are generally not used for power system restoration due to their frequency instability during islanded operation; however, BESS with droop control can provide critical damping to convert a ROR hydropower generator into a blackstart- capable unit. To demonstrate this, we carry out hardware experiments at the megawatt-scale integrating a synchronous generator driven by a dynamometer, an actual GFL/GFM BESS, a medium-voltage impedance network, and a load bank. The demonstration shows the different roles of BESS with GFL and GFM control in power system restoration. GFL BESS can suffer from high-frequency oscillations, even instability, depending on the droop control gain and loading condition. The results provide further insights for system operators on how GFL- or GFMcontrolled BESS can enhance grid stability and how hydro-BESS hybrids can operate as a black-start-capable unit. The presented experimental results are also a valuable resource to understand the different stability characteristics of real-world BESS with different control modes.

System Modeling and Robust Stability Region Analysis for Multi-inverters Based on VSG

As the number of inverter-interfaced distributed generators (IIDGs) increases, the decrease in the inertia of the microgrid affects the stability of microgrid voltage and current. The virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control method simulates the output characteristics of the synchronous machine to improve the inertia and damping of the microgrid. However, low-frequency oscillations can occur in systems with multi-VSGs connected in parallel, primarily when operating in island mode. Therefore, this article develops the small-signal state-space model for multi-inverters based on VSG and analyses the robust stability region (RSR) of the control parameters. Firstly, an extensible small-signal state-space model is established and simplified in the dq axis, which is a necessary preprocessing for the subsequent stability analysis. Secondly, the guardian map method based on bialternate product operation is constructed, and the RSR is established through translation mapping and rotation mapping. Therefore, the solution of RSR is transformed into the problem of identifying the Hurwitz matrix. Finally, the simulations and experiments verify that the calculated region can ensure stable operation during startup and meet the requirement to suppress low-frequency oscillations. In conclusion, the method of solving RSR proposed in this paper provides a basis for selecting controller parameters in practical engineering.

Force-reflective teleoperated system with shared and compliant control capabilities

The force-reflecting teleoperator breadboard is described. It is the first system among available Research and Development systems with the following combined capabilities: (1) The master input device is not a replica of the slave arm. It is a general purpose device which can be applied to the control of different robot arms through proper mathematical transformations. (2) Force reflection generated in the master hand controller is referenced to forces and moments measured by a six DOF force-moment sensor at the base of the robot hand. (3) The system permits a smooth spectrum of operations between full manual, shared manual and automatic, and full automatic (called traded) control. (4) The system can be operated with variable compliance or stiffness in force-reflecting control. Some of the key points of the system are the data handling and computing architecture, the communication method, and the handling of mathematical transformations. The architecture is a fully synchronized pipeline. The communication method achieves optimal use of a parallel communication channel between the local and remote computing nodes. A time delay box is also implemented in this communication channel permitting experiments with up to 8 sec time delay. The mathematical transformations are computed faster than 1 msec so that control at each node can be operated at 1 kHz servo rate without interpolation. This results in an overall force-reflecting loop rate of 200 Hz.

Extraordinary frequency stabilization by resonant nonlinear mode coupling

Here, we show that a self-sustained oscillator with a frequency-selective element operating with two nonlinearly coupled modes can achieve a level of frequency stability well beyond that available using single-mode operation. The system of interest consists of a self-sustained oscillator based on a nonlinear primary mode that is coupled via an internal resonance to a passive secondary mode. Analysis of a generic model for this resonance with both additive and multiplicative noises reveals that the stability improvements accrue from two sources: (i) nonlinear frequency veering in the primary mode, a classical analogue to quantum-level repulsion, that eliminates amplitude-to-frequency noise conversion; and (ii) phase cleaning of the oscillator through an intrinsic phase constraint arising from synchronization of the modes. This latter effect can significantly reduce the effects of intrinsic frequency fluctuations of the primary mode, which are not accessible by any known strategy using single-mode operation. The theoretical predictions are supported by experimental measurements of a microelectromechanical systems-based oscillator that demonstrate a reduction in oscillator line width of several orders of magnitude. This approach offers a means of optimizing frequency stability in self-sustained oscillators, which has direct implications for applications in timekeeping and sensing.

Grid Forming Control Tuning for a Hybrid Inverter-Based Resource Power Plant

A hybrid inverter-based resource (IBR) power plant consists of grid-following (GFL) and grid-forming inverter-based resources (GFM-IBR) connected in parallel. Here, this research focuses on how to design and tune GFM's control parameters to ensure stable operation of the hybrid power plant for weak and strong grid conditions. We consider two design cases: one where the GFL-IBR does not provide frequency support, and one where it does. It is found that the GFM's power-frequency synchronizing system can lose stability when the power-frequency droop constant is large and/or the grid is strong. Additionally, if the GFL has its frequency support enabled, oscillation stability worsens. To explain the mechanism of the interactions, we construct a feedback system for the synchronizing loop, which consists of the GFM's power-frequency droop control that generates the GFM's synchronizing angle, the GFL's phase-locked loop that measures the voltage phase angle, the GFL's frequency-power control that generates its power order, and the rest of the system. The feedback system is effective in illustrating the potential stability risks. Successful design ensures that the hybrid power plant can operate smoothly and ride through grid disturbances.

Planetary explorer liquid propulsion study

An analytical evaluation of several candidate monopropellant hydrazine propulsion system approaches is conducted in order to define the most suitable configuration for the combined velocity and attitude control system for the Planetary Explorer spacecraft. Both orbiter and probe-type missions to the planet Venus are considered. The spacecraft concept is that of a Delta launched spin-stabilized vehicle. Velocity control is obtained through preprogrammed pulse-mode firing of the thrusters in synchronism with the spacecraft spin rate. Configuration selection is found to be strongly influenced by the possible error torques induced by uncertainties in thruster operation and installation. The propulsion systems defined are based on maximum use of existing, qualified components. Ground support equipment requirements are defined and system development testing outlined.

Plasma jet effects on the ionospheric plasma

Heavy ion beams were injected into the ionospheric plasma (experiments ARCS 1 and ARCS 2). In ARCS 1, operation of a 25eV argon ion source, mounted on a plasma diagnostic payload, produced an accelerated electron population; broadband electric field turbulence; large, spin synchronized electric field perturbations; and depletions of thermal ions. In ARCS 2, the ion source was deployed upward along the local magnetic field direction away from the diagnostic payload, and observed effects are contained within several meters of the ion source. However, enhanced wave levels near the LHR frequency are observed at distances up to 1 km, as are the injected ions themselves. A measurement of the dominant wavelength of the enhanced waves is consistent with an inference based upon the accelerated electron population seen in ARCS 1. This electron population is not evident during ARCS 2.

Acquisition and Tracking Behavior of Phase-Locked Loops

Phase-locked or APC loops have found increasing applications in recent years as tracking filters, synchronizing devices, and narrowband FM discriminators. Considerable work has been performed to determine the noise-squelching properties of the loop when it is operating in or near phase lock and is functioning as a linear coherent detector. However, insufficient consideration has been devoted to the non-linear behavior of the loop when it is out of lock and in the process of pulling in. Experimental evidence has indicated that there is a strong tendency for phase-locked loops to achieve lock under most circumstances. However, the analysis which has appeared in the literature iis limited to the acquisition of a constant frequency reference signal with only one phase-locked loop filter configuration. This work represents an investigation of frequency acquisition properties of phase-locked loops for a variety of reference-signal behavior and loop configurations

Orbit Determination and Navigation Software Testing for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter

During the extended science phase of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's lifecycle, the operational duties pertaining to navigation primarily involve orbit determination. The orbit determination process utilizes radiometric tracking data and is used for the prediction and reconstruction of MRO's trajectories. Predictions are done twice per week for ephemeris updates on-board the spacecraft and for planning purposes. Orbit Trim Maneuvers (OTM-s) are also designed using the predicted trajectory. Reconstructions, which incorporate a batch estimator, provide precise information about the spacecraft state to be synchronized with scientific measurements. These tasks were conducted regularly to validate the results obtained by the MRO Navigation Team. Additionally, the team is in the process of converting to newer versions of the navigation software and operating system. The capability to model multiple densities in the Martian atmosphere is also being implemented. However, testing outputs among these different configurations was necessary to ensure compliance to a satisfactory degree.

Operation of the SUPARAMP at 33GHz

A 9mm degenerate parametric amplifier was constructed using a linear, series array of unbiased Josephson junctions as the active, nonlinear element. A balanced diode mixer was used as a synchronous detector, with a single source serving both as the pump and as the mixer local oscillator. A stable, net gain of 15 dB in an instantaneous bandwith (FWHM) of 3.4 GHz was achieved. A system noise temperature of 220 K + or - 5 K (DSB) was measured with a SUPARAMP contribution of only 20 K x or - 10 K. Output saturation was observed and complicates the interpretation of the noise temperature measurements and may render them upper limits. A comparison was made with the results of an earlier 3 cm suparamp. The data is in substantial agreement with theoretical predictions.
