Mapping the composition of planetary surfaces by Auger electron spectroscopy

The feasibility of AES as a remote-sensing technique to map the composition of the sunlit surfaces of planetary bodies without atmospheres is studied. Solar X-rays eject photoelectrons from the planetary surface. The resulting ions relax by emission of fluorescence X-rays or Auger electrons, with energies characteristic of the element which is ionized. The spectrum of Auger electrons and photoelectrons is computed for a variety of elements and for representative lunar rock types illuminated by soft-X-ray line and continuum emission typical of solar long-lived coronal active regions. The Auger electron lines for O, Si, Mg, Al, Fe, and Ca in lunar rocks stand well above the continuum background from photoelectrons and backscattered interplanetary electrons, with typical line-to-continuum ratios from about 20 to over 1000.

Electronic Spectroscopy and Dissociation Dynamics of Vinyl-Substituted Criegee Intermediates: 2-Butenal Oxide and Comparison with Methyl Vinyl Ketone Oxide and Methacrolein Oxide Isomers

The 2-butenal oxide Criegee intermediate [(CH 3 CH=CH)CHOO], an isomer of the four-carbon unsaturated Criegee intermediates derived from isoprene ozonolysis, is characterized on its first π * ←π electronic transition and by the resultant dissociation dynamics to O ( 1 D) + 2-butenal [(CH 3 CH=CH)CHO] products. The electronic spectrum of 2-butenal oxide under jet-cooled conditions is observed to be broad and unstructured with peak absorption at 373 nm, spanning to half maxima at 320 and 420 nm, and in good accord with the computed vertical excitation energies and absorption spectra obtained for its lowest energy conformers. The distribution of total kinetic energy released to products is ascertained through velocity map imaging of the O ( 1 D) products. About half of the available energy, deduced from the theoretically computed asymptotic energy, is accommodated as internal excitation of the 2-butenal fragment. A reduced impulsive model is introduced to interpret the photodissociation dynamics, which accounts for the geometric changes between 2-butenal oxide and the 2-butenal fragment, and vibrational activation of associated modes in the 2-butenal product. Application of the reduced impulsive model to the photodissociation of isomeric methyl vinyl ketone oxide reveals greater internal activation of the methyl vinyl ketone product arising from methyl internal rotation and rock, which is distinctly different than the dissociation dynamics of 2-butenal oxide or methacrolein oxide.

Penning Ionization Electron Spectroscopy in Glow Discharge: A New Dimension for Gas Chromatography Detectors

Admixtures to helium of 100 ppm and 5 ppm of nitrogen, and 100 ppm and 10 ppm of carbon monoxide were identified and measured in the helium discharge afterglow using an electrical probe placed into the plasma. For nitrogen and carbon monoxide gases, the measured electron energy spectra display distinct characteristic peaks (fingerprints). Location of the peaks on the energy scale is determined by the ionization energies of the analyte molecules. Nitrogen and carbon monoxide fingerprints were also observed in a binary mixture of these gases in helium, and the relative concentration analytes has been predicted. The technically simple and durable method is considered a good candidate for a number of analytical applications, and in particular, in GC and for analytical flight instrumentation.

Electronic spectroscopy of PAHs and PAH derivatives in supersonic jet

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAHs) molecules are attracting much attention in the astrophysical and astrochemical communities because of their ubiquitous presence in space due to their ability to survive in the harsh environmental conditions of the interstellar medium(ISM). The objective of this work is to provide gas phase, high-resolution spectroscopic data on the electronic and vibronic transitions of PAHs and their nitrogenated derivatives measured in astrophysically relevant conditions.

Evaluation of plasma cleaning and electron spectroscopy for reduction of organic contamination

The use of Auger spectroscopy to evaluate the effectiveness of plasma cleaning procedures in decontaminating Viking spacecraft is examined. Also investigated was the use of Auger spectroscopy to monitor organic contamination. Results show plasma cleaning can be used effectively to remove organic films and that Auger spectroscopy can be used to monitor organic contamination.

Auger electron spectroscopy of lunar samples

Auger spectroscopy has been employed to study the surface composition of a number of grains from the submillimeter lunar fines. Some of the problems associated with using this technique for lunar sample analyses are discussed in terms of relevant physical principles. The use of inert gas sputtering to obtain thickness profiles of surface films is shown to be important in this type of investigation. Four anorthite grains from the Apollo 17 fines have been examined for evidence of vapor-deposited surface coatings of micrometeorite impact origin. The results indicate that the thickness of surface deposits, if they exist at all, are orders of magnitude less than expected. Auger analysis of orange glass balls form the 74220,107 fines have established sulfur-rich surface coatings on the order of 30 A in thickness.

Mechanical test in-situ fracture device for Auger electron spectroscopy

An in-situ fracture device for Auger spectroscopy was described. The device is designed to handle small tensile specimens or small double cantilever beam specimens and is fully instrumented with load and displacement transducers so that quantitative stress-strain measurements can be made directly. Some initial test results for specimens made from 4130 and 1020 steel were presented.

Mechanical testing - In situ fracture device for Auger electron spectroscopy

An in situ fracture device for Auger spectroscopy is described. The device is designed to handle small tensile specimens or small double-cantilever beam specimens and is fully instrumented with load and displacement transducers so that quantitative stress-strain measurements can be made directly. Some initial test results for specimens made from 4130 and 1020 steel are presented. Results indicate that impurity segregation at interfaces other than grain boundary may play a significant role in the mechanism of ductile fracture.

Characterization of interfacial failure in SiC reinforced Si3N4 matrix composite material by both fiber push-out testing and Auger electron spectroscopy

AES depth profiling and a fiber push-out test for interfacial shear-strength determination have been used to ascertain the mechanical/chemical properties of the fiber/matrix interface in SiC-reinforced reaction-bonded Si3N4, with attention to the weak point where interfacial failure occurs. In the cases of both composite fracture and fiber push-outs, the interfacial failure occurred either between the two C-rich coatings that are present on the double-coated SiC fibers, or between the inner C-rich coating and the SiC fiber. Interface failure occurs at points of very abrupt concentration changes.
