Analysis of neptunium oxides produced through modified direct denitration

Production of neptunium-237 ( 237 Np) target materials for plutonium-238 ( 238 Pu) radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) for deep space exploration requires advanced chemistry and engineering development. Currently, the domestic Pu-238 Supply Program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory produces neptunium dioxide (NpO 2 ) for target material using a modified direct denitration (MDD) flowsheet. Although the chemistry, reaction mechanisms, and product characteristics of MDD are well understood for uranium, corresponding studies of the neptunium system are still needed to continue optimization of target material properties, production equipment design, and production flowsheets. Here, the objective of this work is to characterize crystalline phases, morphology, surface texture, and particle size of NpO 2 produced via MDD reactions. Solid-phase characterization techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD) and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), were employed to achieve this objective. Subsequent data processing using the Morphological Analysis for Material Attribution (MAMA) software was performed to analyze particle morphology and size. Broadly, the powders were found to contain a mixture of NpO 2 and Np 2 O 5 after denitration with a variety of morphologies. After high-firing, the product was found to be NpO 2 with a typical polycrystalline oxide morphology and a grain size ranging from 0.72 to 0.94 µm. These analyses provide knowledge on the reaction pathway for a non-traditional NpO 2 synthesis method and offer additional unique insight into production-scale environments for transuranic materials.

Periodic Trends within Actinyl(VI) Nitrates and Their Structures, Vibrational Spectra, and Electronic Properties

In this work, a series of actinyl(VI) nitrate salts of the form MAnO 2 (NO 3 ) 3 , where M = NH 4 + K + , Rb + , Cs + , and Me 4 N + and AnO 2 2+ = U, Np, Pu, and AnO 2 (NO 3 ) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ·H 2 O, and the uranyl tetranitrates M 2 UO 2 (NO 3 ) 4 have been synthesized from aqueous solution and their structures determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Together, these complexes represent an isostructural series of actinide complexes among the salts crystallized with the same charge-compensating cation and have been studied using vibrational spectroscopy including Raman and Fourier-transform infrared. Periodic trends in both the structural properties of these complexes and their vibrational spectra are presented and discussed, in particular the invariant nature of the O≡An≡O asymmetric stretching frequencies observed across the actinyl series. Electronic structure calculations were performed at a variety of levels of theory to aid in the interpretation of the vibrational data and to correlate trends in the data with the underlying electronic properties of these molecules.

Crystallographic structure and crystal field parameters in the [An IV (DPA) 3 ] 2- series, An = Th, U, Np, Pu

The [An IV (DPA) 3 ] 2- series with An = Th, U, Np, Pu has been synthesized and characterized using SC-XRD and vibrational spectroscopy. First principles calculations were performed, the total electron density is analyzed using the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules. Crystal field parameters and strength parameters are deduced following a previous work on the Ln III analog series e.g. [J. Jung et al., Chem. – Eur. J., 2019, 25, 15112]. The trends in the parameters along the series are compared to the Ln III complexes. They evidence larger covalent interactions and larger J mixing.

A Synthetic Approach to β-Functionalized Naphtho[2,3]porphyrins

A concise synthetic method has been developed to access functionalized naphtho[2,3]porphyrins through combining two sequence reactions involving a Heck–electrocyclization–aromatization sequence and a Wittig–Knovenegal sequence. Using this method, mononaphtho[2,3]porphyrin (NP-1), opp-dinaphtho[2,3]porphyrin (NP-2), and push–pull naphtho[2,3]porphyrin (NP-3) have been prepared. These naphtho[2,3]porphyrins displayed interesting optical and electrochemical properties. As a result, excellent efficiencies of singlet oxygen generation were obtained for these naphtho[2,3]porphyrins.

Revealing Sintering Kinetics of MoS 2 -Supported Metal Nanocatalysts in Atmospheric Gas Environments via Operando Transmission Electron Microscopy

The decoration of two-dimensional (2D) substrates with nanoparticles (NPs) serve as heterostructures for various catalysis applications. Deep understanding of catalyst degradation mechanisms during service conditions is crucial to improve the catalyst durability. In this work, we studied the sintering behavior of Pt and bimetallic Au-core Pt-shell (Au@Pt core–shell) NPs on MoS 2 supports at high temperatures under vacuum, nitrogen (N 2 ), hydrogen (H 2 ), and air environments by in situ gas-cell transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The key observations are summarized as effect of environment: while particle migration and coalescence (PMC) was the main mechanism that led to Pt and Au@Pt NPs degradation under vacuum, N 2 , and H 2 environments, the degradation of MoS 2 substrate was prominent under exposure to air at high temperatures. Pt NPs were less stable in H 2 environment when compared with the Pt NPs under vacuum or N 2 , due to Pt–H interactions that weakened the adhesion of Pt on MoS 2 . Effect of NP composition: under H 2 , the stability of Au@Pt NPs was higher in comparison to Pt NPs. This is because H 2 promotes the alloying of Pt–Au, thus reducing the number of Pt at the surface (reducing H 2 interactions) and increasing Pt atoms in contact with MoS 2 . Effect of NP size: The alloying effect promoted by H 2 was more pronounced in small size Au@Pt NPs resulting in their higher sintering resistance in comparison to large size Au@Pt NPs and similar size Pt NPs. The present work provides key insights into the parameters affecting the catalyst degradation mechanisms on 2D supports.

Sintering effects on NpO 2 grain size and morphology: The role of precursor Np phase

Neptunium dioxide (NpO 2 ) is a key phase in nuclear material processing as a target material for the production of plutonium-238 ( 238 Pu) and has been historically synthesized via the calcination of a Np oxalate precursor. Alternative synthesis methods for NpO 2 are now more prevalent, necessitating their study and comparison with the more common oxalate route. The purpose of this work was to investigate the microstructural properties of NpO 2 synthesized from a nitrate-based Np precursor phase via the assessment of NpO 2 particle size and morphology as a function of calcination temperature and time. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to probe the primary grain size and morphology of NpO 2 after calcination at temperatures ranging from 700 to 1100 °C and hold times ranging from 1 to 10 h. Post-image analysis using ImageJ software enabled the quantification of mean particle diameter. This analysis indicated that particle diameter increases with both increasing calcination temperature and hold time. Primary particles were shown to be clumped in irregular patterns into the overall rough, blocky aggregates, but this macroscopic morphology was not affected by calcination time or temperature. Although trends in primary grain size of NpO 2 were consistent with available literature from other Np precursor phases, the macroscopic morphology of the NpO 2 aggregates was quite different than reported for other precursors. Through comparison with historical literature on Np oxalate, this work emphasizes the importance of Np precursor on the physical properties of NpO 2 .

Characterization of the complexes has been performed through a combination of solid- and solution-state methods, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electronic absorption and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. Collectively, these data confirm the formation of the mono- and bis-ligated species. Electrochemistry of a series of bis-ligated actinide complexes, An( Mes PDP Ph ) 2 (An = Th, U, Np), is presented.

Electronic Structure of the Au Nanoparticle-TiO 2 Heterojunction: Influence of Nanoparticle Size, Shape, Oxygen Vacancies, and Temperature

The electronic structure of the gold nanoparticle-titanium dioxide (AuNP-TiO 2 ) heterojunction plays a critical role for charge transfer and recombination dynamics that underpin its photocatalytic function. However, building a representative model to capture the key physics remains a significant challenge. Here, we investigate the influence of the AuNP size and shape, as well as oxygen vacancy (V O ) defects at the anatase-phase TiO 2 (101) surface and the temperature of the heterojunction, on its interfacial electronic properties. Using density functional theory (DFT), we compare the closed-shell Au 20 and open-shell Au 19 clusters interfaced with pristine and V O defect TiO 2 surfaces. We find that the presence of a V O defect transforms pure TiO 2 from a p-type to an n-type semiconductor, reversing the interfacial band bending from downward to upward. For the heterosystem, density of states (DOS) analysis shows that V O minimally affects the open-shell Au 19 -TiO 2 system, but it significantly alters the closed-shell Au 20 -TiO 2 system, converting it from p-type to n-type at the Γ-point at 0 K. Furthermore, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations at 300 K reveal significant thermal fluctuations in AuNP positions relative to the TiO 2 surface. These fluctuations result in dynamic variations in the gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) in all systems studied: Au 19 NP-Pristine TiO 2 , Au 20 NP-Pristine TiO 2 , Au 19 NP-V O defect TiO 2 , and Au 20 NP-V O defect TiO 2 . Complementary Bader charge analysis performed at both 0 K and finite-temperature AIMD snapshots supports the emergence of an upward band bending and the formation of a Schottky barrier at the V O containing heterojunctions. Notably, we find that at finite temperature, an Au atom can dynamically passivate the V O , leading to a pronounced widening of the HOMO-LUMO gap in the AuNP-V O defect TiO 2 heterojunctions. Our computational findings underscore the pivotal role of the V O defect and thermal effects in modulating interfacial band alignment, electronic states, and HOMO-LUMO gaps, providing insights for designing Au-TiO 2 heterojunctions with tailored electronic properties.

Fire–precipitation interactions amplify the quasi-biennial variability in fires over southern Mexico and Central America

Fires have great ecological, social, and economic impact. However, fire prediction and management remain challenges due to a limited understanding of their roles in the Earth system. Fires over southern Mexico and Central America (SMCA) are a good example of this, greatly impacting local air quality and regional climate. Here we report that the spring peak (April–May) of fire activities in this region has a distinct quasi-biennial signal based on multiple satellite datasets measuring different fire characteristics. The variability is initially driven by quasi-biennial variations in precipitation. Composite analysis indicates that strong fire years correspond to suppressed ascending motion and weakened precipitation over the SMCA. The anomalous precipitation over the SMCA is further found to be mostly related to the East Pacific–North Pacific (EP-NP) pattern 2 months prior to the fire season. The positive phase of the EP-NP leads to enhanced precipitation over the eastern US but suppressed precipitation over the SMCA, similar to the spatial pattern of precipitation differences between strong and weak fire years. Meanwhile, the quasi-biennial signals in precipitation and fires appear to be amplified by their interactions through a positive feedback loop at short timescales. Model simulations show that in strong fire years, more aerosol particles are released and transported downstream over the Gulf of Mexico and the eastern US, where suspended light-absorbing aerosols warm the atmosphere and cause the ascending motion of the air aloft. Subsequently, a compensating downward motion is formed over the region of the fire source and ultimately suppresses precipitation and intensifies fires. Statistical analysis shows the different durations of the two-way interaction, where the fire suppression effect of precipitation lasts for more than 20 d, while fire leads to a decrease in precipitation at shorter timescales (3–5 d). This study demonstrates the importance of fire–climate interactions in shaping the fire activities on an interannual scale and highlights how precipitation–fire interactions at short timescales contribute to the interannual variability in both fire and precipitation.

A tetrahedral neptunium(V) complex

Neptunium is an actinide element sourced from anthropogenic production, and, unlike naturally abundant uranium, its coordination chemistry is not well developed in all accessible oxidation states. High-valent neptunium generally requires stabilization from at least one metal–ligand multiple bond, and departing from this structural motif poses a considerable challenge. Here we report a tetrahedral molecular neptunium(V) complex ([Np 5+ (NPC) 4 ][B(ArF 5 ) 4 ], 1-Np) (NPC = [NP t Bu(pyrr) 2 ] − ; t Bu = C(CH 3 ) 3 ; pyrr = pyrrolidinyl (N(C 2 H 4 ) 2 ); B(ArF 5 ) 4 = tetrakis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluourophenyl)borate). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, solution-state spectroscopy and density functional theory studies of 1-Np and the product of its proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reaction, 2-Np, demonstrate the unique bonding that stabilizes this reactive ion and establishes the thermochemical and kinetic parameters of PCET in a condensed-phase transuranic complex. The isolation of this four-coordinate, neptunium(V) complex reveals a fundamental reaction pathway in transuranic chemistry.
