QED Radiative Corrections to CC Neutrino Scattering in NOvA

The widely-used (anti)neutrino event generator GENIE accounts for only tree level Charged-Current (CC) (anti)neutrino interactions. In this poster we begin by summarizing previous research into second order QED radiative corrections. After summarizing the theoretical corrections to cross-section distributions in $Q^2$ and $E_\nu$ we analyze the effects of Radiative corrections implemented as a systematic within NOvA's neutrino oscillation analysis framework. We present corrected predictions of (anti)neutrino event spectra at NOvA's far detector, showing an increase in CC cross sections with an increase in reconstructed $E_\nu$ along with a small decrease in low reco $E_\nu$ bins, consistent with the theoretical work.

Do recent observations of very large electromagnetic dissociation cross sections signify a transition towards non-perturbative QED?

The very large electromagnetic dissociation (EMD) cross section recently observed by Hill, Wohn, Schwellenbach, and Smith do not agree with Weizsacker-Williams (WW) theory or any simple modification thereof. Calculations are presented for the reaction probabilities for this experiment and the entire single and double nucleon removal EMD data set. It is found that for those few reactions where theory and experiment disagree, the probabilities are exceptionally large. This indicates that WW theory is not valid for these reactions and that one must consider higher order corrections and perhaps even a non-perturbative approach to quantum electrodynamics (QED).

The QED engine spectrum - Fusion-electric propulsion for air-breathing to interstellar flight

A new inertial-electrostatic-fusion direct electric power source can be used to drive a relativistic e-beam to heat propellant. The resulting system is shown to yield specific impulse and thrust/mass ratio 2-3 orders of magnitude larger than from other advanced propulsion concepts. This QED system can be applied to aerospace vehicles from air-breathing to near-interstellar flight. Examples are given for Earth/Mars flight missions, that show transit times of 40 d with 20 percent payload in single-stage vehicles.

The QED engine - Fusion-electric propulsion for Cis-Oort/Quasi-Interstellar (QIS) flight

A summary is presented of QED fusion-direct-electric engine systems, their features, and performance ranges. The principles and characteristics of inertial-electrostatic-fusion (IEF) power source systems are then reviewed, and their application to the diluted-fusion-product (DFP) engine concept for QIS missions is discussed. Particular attention is given to vehicle performance over a range of very high specific impulses and to specifications of a typical candidate DFP/IEF engine and a single-stage vehicle for rapid flight to 550 AU.

Secluded WIMPs, Dark QED with Massive Photons, and the Galactic Center Gamma-Ray Excess

We discuss a particular secluded WIMP dark matter model consisting of neutral fermions as the dark matter candidate and a Proca-Wentzel (PW) field as a mediator. In the model that we consider here, dark matter WIMPs interact with standard model (SM) particles only through the PW field of approximately MeV-multi-GeV mass particles. The interactions occur via a U(1)' mediator, V'(sub mu), which couples to the SM by kinetic mixing with U(1) hypercharge bosons, B'(sub mu). One important difference between our model and other such models in the literature is the absence of an extra singlet scalar, so that the parameter with dimension of mass M(sup 2, sub V) is not related to a spontaneous symmetry breaking. This QED based model is also renormalizable. The mass scale of the mediator and the absence of the singlet scalar can lead to interesting astrophysical signatures. The dominant annihilation channels are different from those usually considered in previous work. We show that the GeV energy gamma-ray excess in the galactic center region, as derived from Fermi-LAT Gamma-ray Space Telescope data, can be attributed to such secluded dark matter WIMPs, given parameters of the model that are consistent with both the cosmological dark matter density and the upper limits on WIMP spin-independent elastic scattering. Secluded WIMP models are also consistent with suggested upper limits on a DM contribution to the cosmic-ray antiproton flux.

QED radiative corrections to neutrino-nucleon elastic scattering

Neutrino oscillation experiments at accelerator energies aim to establish CP violation in the neutrino sector by measuring the energy-dependent rate of $\nu_e$ appearance and $\nu_\mu$ disappearance in a $\nu_\mu$ beam. Extracting the correct oscillation rate demands control over QED radiative corrections at the percent level. Focusing on the critical charged-current neutrino-nucleon scattering process, we show that the cross section factorizes into two pieces. The first piece depends on hadron structure but is universal for $\nu_e$ and $\nu_\mu$, and hence constrained by high-statistics $\nu_\mu$ data. The second piece is nonuniversal and suffers large logarithm enhancements, but is computed to high precision using renormalization group improved perturbation theory. Our results provide a missing ingredient for the robust interpretation of current NOvA and T2K experiments, and can be applied to future experiments such as DUNE and HyperK.

Progress report on computing the disconnected QCD and the QCD plus QED hadronic contributions to the muon's anomalous magnetic moment

We report progress on calculating the contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon from the disconnected hadronic diagrams with light and strange quarks and the valence QED contribution to the connected diagrams. The lattice QCD calculations use the highly-improved staggered quark (HISQ) formulation. The gauge configurations were generated by the MILC Collaboration with four flavors of HISQ sea quarks with physical sea-quark masses.

Initial state QED radiation aspects for future $e^+e^-$ colliders

This white paper concerns theoretical and phenomenological aspects relevant to the physics of future $e^+e^-$ colliders, in particular regarding initial-state QED radiation. The contributions each contain key technical aspects, and are formulated in a pedagogical manner so as to render them accessible also to those who are not directly working on these and immediately-related topics. This should help both experts and non-experts understand the theoretical challenges that we shall face at future $e^+e^-$ colliders. Specifically, this paper contains descriptions of the treatment of initial state radiation from several Monte Carlo collaborations, as well as contributions that explain a number of more theoretical developments with promise of future phenomenological impact.

Calculating the QED correction to the hadronic vacuum polarisation on the lattice

Isospin-breaking corrections to the hadron vacuum polarization component of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon are needed to ensure the theoretical precision of $g_\mu -2$ is below the experimental precision. We describe the status of our work calculating, using lattice QCD, the QED correction to the light and strange connected hadronic vacuum polarization in a Dashen scheme. We report results using physical $N_f=2+1+1$ HISQ ensembles at three lattice spacings and three heavier-than-light valence quark masses.

The constructive method for massive particles in QED

The constructive method of determining amplitudes from on-shell pole structure has been shown to be promising for calculating amplitudes in a more efficient way. However, challenges have been encountered when a massless internal photon is involved in the gluing of three-point amplitudes with massive external particles. In this paper, we use the original on-shell method, old-fashioned perturbation theory, to shed light on the constructive method, and show that one can derive the Feynman amplitude by correctly identifying the residue even when there is an internal photon involved.

Non-cancellation of the parity anomaly in the strong-field regime of QED 2+1

Quantum fluctuations lead to an anomalous violation of parity symmetry in quantum electrodynamics for an even number of spatial dimensions. While the leading parity-odd electric current vanishes in vacuum, we uncover a non-cancellation of the anomaly for strong electric fields with distinct macroscopic signatures. We perform real-time lattice simulations with fully dynamical gauge fields and Wilson fermions in 2 + 1 space-time dimensions. In the static field limit, relevant at early times, we solve the problem analytically. Our results point out the fundamental role of quantum anomalies for strong-field phenomena, relevant for a wide range of condensed matter and high-energy applications, but also for the next generation of gauge theory quantum simulators.

Probing strong-field QED in beam-plasma collisions

Ongoing progress in laser and accelerator technology opens new possibilities in high-field science, notably to investigate the largely unexplored strong-field quantum electrodynamics (SFQED) regime where electron-positron pairs can be created directly from light-matter or even light-vacuum interactions. Laserless strategies such as beam-beam collisions have also been proposed to access the nonperturbative limit of SFQED. Here we report on a concept to probe SFQED by harnessing the interaction between a high-charge, ultrarelativistic electron beam and a solid conducting target. When impinging onto the target surface, the beam self fields are reflected, partly or fully, depending on the beam shape; in the rest frame of the beam electrons, these fields can exceed the Schwinger field, thus triggering SFQED effects such as quantum nonlinear inverse Compton scattering and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler electron-positron pair creation. Through reduced modeling and kinetic numerical simulations, we show that this single-beam setup can achieve interaction conditions similar to those envisioned in beam-beam collisions, but in a simpler and more controllable way owing to the automatic overlap of the beam and driving fields. This scheme thus eases the way to precision studies of SFQED and is also a promising milestone towards laserless studies of nonperturbative SFQED.

Particle deceleration for collective QED signatures

Frequency upshifts have been proposed as a first experimental signature of collective effects in quantum electrodynamic cascade generated electron–positron pair plasmas. Since the high effective masses of generated pairs will reduce any frequency change, stopped pairs at a minimal Lorentz factor in the lab frame were thought to be the dominant contribution to the laser upshift. However, we demonstrate that only considering stopped particles unduly neglects the contributions of particles re-accelerated in the laser propagation direction. Re-accelerated particles should, on a per particle basis, affect the laser more strongly and over a much longer timescale. To maximize particle contributions to the laser upshift, we consider a Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) mode laser beam to better reflect generated pairs. Furthermore, the LG mode does not have an advantage in particle deceleration and re-acceleration when compared against a Gaussian beam, but the LG mode can maintain particle contributions for a longer duration, allowing for more pair density accumulation. Deceleration with a structured beam to keep pairs within the laser should create a larger upshift, thereby lowering the demands on the driving laser.

Strong-field QED limitations on TeV-class plasma wakefield accelerators

We demonstrate that quantum and classical radiation effects can become non-negligible for TeV-class beams propagating through plasma channels typical of staged plasma accelerators. Although the quantum nonlinearity parameter χ e remains small under currently envisioned experimental conditions, the cumulative influence of radiation over long acceleration distances can lead to significant modifications to the beam’s energy spread, emittance, and polarization. Our analytic models, validated by particle-in-cell simulations, highlight that for standard Gaussian beams, the orbit-induced energy spread dominates over quantum stochastic effects but can be mitigated by tailoring the beam profile, for example, through ring-shaped transverse distributions. In regimes where the radiation reaction approaches the accelerating force, the emittance may be cooled, forming distinctive ring-shaped phase-space structures. Finally, we analyze the influence of the radiation effect on spin transport inside the wakefield. These findings underscore the importance of considering both classical and quantum radiation dynamics in the design and optimization of future high-intensity plasma accelerators.
