Bilateral, Zero-Impedance Static Semiconductor Switch

Static semiconductor switching circuit eliminates the undesirable features of electromechanical relays and conventional semiconductor switching circuits. There is a net zero voltage drop at the terminals and thus a zero impedance for bilateral currents there.

Nondissipative optimum charge regulator

Optimum charge regulator provides constant level charge/discharge control of storage batteries. Basic power transfer and control is performed by solar panel coupled to battery through power switching circuit. Optimum controller senses battery current and modifies duty cycle of switching circuit to maximize current available to battery.

GTO/FET Cascode Three-Terminal Switch

Neither external bias nor energy-storage components required. Three-terminal semiconductor switching circuit features high switching speed, extremely high turnoff safe operating area (area in current-vs-voltage plane), moderately low forward ("on"-state) voltage drop, and efficient utilization of silicon in design of components. Includes gate-turn-off thyristor (GTO) and low-voltage (low-on-resistance) field-effect transistor (FET-1) connected in series to form cascode pair. Made of commercially available, discrete components, as hybrid circuit package or as monolithic integrated circuit.

System for automatically switching transformer coupled lines

A system is presented for automatically controlling transformer coupled alternating current electric lines. The secondary winding of each transformer is provided with a center tap. A switching circuit is connected to the center taps of a pair of secondary windings and includes a switch controller. An impedance is connected between the center taps of the opposite pair of secondary windings. The switching circuit has continuity when the AC lines are continuous and discontinuity with any disconnect of the AC lines. Normally open switching means are provided in at least one AC line. The switch controller automatically opens the switching means when the AC lines become separated.

A power semiconductor test circuit with reduced power requirements

Switching circuit utilizing silicon controlled rectifier reduces input power requirements normally associated with testing power semiconductors in an operational type mode. Circuit alleviates problems of inaccessibility, lack of large amounts of power, physical size of power resistors, wiring, and heat generation.

Solar array switching unit

A solar array switching (SASU) unit (22) according to the present invention includes a control system (24), a solar cell array (26) and switch circuits (28). The SASU unit (22) is associated with a power card (30) for receiving an output from the array (26). The array (26) has a number (0.5Y) of rows (38) each of which includes a pair of cell strings (42) separated by one of the switch circuits (28). Each of the strings (42) includes a number (X) of cells in electrical series. The SASU (22) switches the array (26) between a short string configuration where the array (26) effectively includes Y strings of X length, and a long string configuration where the array (26) effectively includes 0.5Y strings of 2X length. The SASU (22) thereby facilitates the use of solar power for space missions where solar intensity, operating temperature or other factors vary significantly.

Compact, Efficient Drive Circuit for a Piezoelectric Pump

A switching circuit that drives a piezoelectric pump at a high voltage with a polarity that alternates at the desired mechanical pump frequency is described and depicted. This circuit offers advantages of (1) high energy efficiency relative to conventional direct-drive circuits and (2) compactness relative to conventional resonant drive circuits.

Inexpensive solid-state monitoring circuit

Circuit reduces intermittent fan-flutter openings in airflow switch. Circuit ignores brief switch openings due to contact oscillations; however, if switch is open longer than selected interval, control circuit shuts down system and sounds alarm.

Binary selectable detector holdoff circuit: Design, testing, and application

A very high speed switching circuit, part of a laser radar data acquisition system, has been designed and tested. The primary function of this circuit was to provide computer controlled switching of photodiode detector preamplifier power supply voltages, typically less than plus or minus 20 volts, in approximately 10 nanoseconds. Thus, in actual use, detector and/or detector preamplifier damage can be avoided as a result of sudden extremely large values of backscattered radiation being detected, such as might be due to short range, very thin atmospheric dust layers. Switching of the power supply voltages was chosen over direct switching the photodiode detector input to the preamplifier, based on system noise considerations. Also, the circuit provides a synchronized trigger pulse output for triggering devices such as the Biomation Model 8100 100 MHz analog to digital converter.
