Itinerant G-type antiferromagnet SrCr 2 As 2 studied by magnetization, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, and NMR measurements

Here, the physical properties of itinerant antiferromagnetic (AFM) SrCr 2 As 2 with body-centered tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 structure were investigated in single crystalline and polycrystalline forms by electrical resistivity ρ, heat capacity C p , magnetic susceptibility χ versus temperature T, and magnetization M versus applied magnetic field H isotherm measurements as well as 75 As and 53 Cr nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the wide temperature range T = 1.6–900 K. From the χ(T) and 75 As NMR measurements, the G-type AFM state below T N = 615(15) K has been determined, consistent with the previous neutron-diffraction measurements. Direct evidence of magnetic ordering of the Cr spins was shown by the observation of the 53 Cr NMR spectrum under H = 0. From the χ( T) measurements on single-crystal SrCr 2 As 2 under the two different magnetic field directions H|| ab and H || c in the AFM state, the Cr ordered moments are shown to align along the c axis in the G-type AFM state. The metallic state is directly evidenced by the ρ, C p , and NMR measurements, and the density of states at the Fermi energy $\mathscr{D}$(E F ) in the AFM state is estimated to be 7.53 states/eV f.u. for both spin directions which is almost twice the bare $\mathscr{D}$(E F ) estimated from first-principles calculations, suggesting an enhancement of the conduction-carrier mass by a factor of two in the AFM state. The $\mathscr{D}$(E F ) is found to be nearly constant below at least 100 K and is independent of H. The ρ(T) is found to show T-linear behavior above T N and exhibits positive curvature below T N where significant loss of spin-disorder scattering upon magnetic ordering is observed. The resistivity anisotropy of the compound remains moderate ρ c /ρ a ~ 9 through most of the magnetically ordered phase but shows a rapid increase below 50 K.

Magnetic properties of (Mo 2/3 Dy 1/3 ) 2 AlC arc melted polycrystalline samples

Here, this study investigates the structural and magnetic properties of arc-melted (Mo 2/3 Dy 1/3 ) 2 AlC polycrystalline samples, a member of the i-MAX phase family. Temperature-dependent magnetization and specific heat measurements confirm the low-temperature antiferromagnetic transitions around 14 K and 17 K. Neutron diffraction data collected at 4 K reveal the emergence of magnetic Bragg peaks that are not allowed in the paramagnetic space group C2/c, further confirming the presence of antiferromagnetic ordering. The detection of a secondary phase, DyAl 2 , is complicated by overlapping Bragg peaks with the monoclinic phase of (Mo 2/3 Dy 1/3 ) 2 AlC in powder XRD patterns. However, magnetization and neutron diffraction data suggest the presence of DyAl 2 , evidenced by a ferromagnetic phase transition around 62 K.

Temperature-Dependent Structural Transition in Cu-Intercalated Trigonal CuYbSe 2

Rare-earth delafossites, ARCh 2 ; A = alkali metal, R = rare-earth, Ch = chalcogen which consist of intercalated rare-earth metal dichalcogenides, host frustrated triangular lattices that are fertile ground for exotic phenomena. In most cases, the triangular rare-earth sublattice arises from R-3m (No. 166) structures with three layers of rare-earth metal dichalcogenide octahedra or P6 3 /mmc (No. 194) structures with two such layers, analogous to those found in transition metal dichalcogenides. Substituting the alkali metal with Cu + yields a distinct trigonal crystal symmetry P-3m1 (No. 164) in these structures. This symmetry change alters the coordination environment from ASe 6 octahedra in R-3m AYbSe 2 to CuSe 4 tetrahedra in CuYbSe 2 , resulting in shortened rare-earth to rare-earth separations and significantly reduced interlayer distances. Using X-ray single-crystal diffraction, powder neutron diffraction, resistance, and specific heat measurements, a structural transition slightly below room temperature (258 K) is observed. The low-temperature structure is a lower-symmetry I2/m structure, accompanied by partial Cu-site vacancy ordering. The combination of Cu disorder and the triangular lattice geometry in CuYbSe 2 provides a promising platform for investigating frustrated magnetism and unconventional transport phenomena.

Quasi-One-Dimensional Structure and Possible Helical Antiferromagnetism of RbMn 6 Bi 5

Quasi-one-dimensional materials exhibit not only unique crystal structure but also abundant physical properties such as charge density wave, Luttinger liquid, and superconductivity. In this study, we report the discovery, structure, and physical properties of a new manganese-based quasi-one-dimensional material RbMn 6 Bi 5 , which crystallizes in a monoclinic space group C 2/ m (No. 12) with lattice parameters a = 23.286(5) Å, b = 4.6215(9) Å, c = 13.631(3) Å, and β = 125.00(3)°. The structure features [Mn 6 Bi 5 ] –1 double-walled column extending along the [010] direction, together with Bi–Bi homoatomic bonds linking the columns and the countercation Rb + . The temperature-dependent resistivity clearly indicates a significant resistivity anisotropy for RbMn 6 Bi 5 , whereas the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements show that RbMn 6 Bi 5 is antiferromagnetic below 82 K. The density functional theory calculations indicate that RbMn 6 Bi 5 is a quasi-one-dimensional metal with possible helical antiferromagnetic configuration. The discovery of RbMn 6 Bi 5 confirms the viability of discovering new quasi-one-dimensional materials in manganese-based compounds.

Frustrated Magnetism in FeGe 3 O 4 with a Chiral Trillium Network

The discovery of new magnetic ground states in geometrically frustrated lattices remains a central challenge in materials science. Here, we report the synthesis, structural characterization, and frustrated magnetic properties of FeGe 3 O 4 , a newly identified compound that crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric cubic space group P 2 1 3. In this structure, Fe atoms form an intricate double-trillium lattice with nearest-neighbor Fe−Fe distances of ∼4.2 Å, while Ge 2+ ions mediate magnetic interactions through Fe− Ge−Fe pathways. Field-dependent magnetization at 2 K shows a pronounced nonlinearity, reaching a maximum moment of 2.55(3) μ B /Fe 2+ at 70 kOe without evidence of saturation. Magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron scattering collectively reveal the onset of short-range magnetic interactions near 5 K, with no longrange ordering detected down to 0.06 K. Specific heat measurements demonstrate strong frustration: only ∼34% of the expected magnetic entropy is recovered at 2.4 K. Taken together, these results establish FeGe 3 O 4 as a rare example of a geometrically frustrated trillium lattice magnet, offering a promising platform for exploring exotic quantum magnetic phenomena.

Charge-neutral fermions and magnetic field-driven instability in insulating YbIr 3 Si 7

Kondo lattice materials, where localized magnetic moments couple to itinerant electrons, provide a very rich backdrop for strong electron correlations. They are known to realize many exotic phenomena, with a dramatic example being recent observations of quantum oscillations and metallic thermal conduction in insulators, implying the emergence of enigmatic charge-neutral fermions. Here, we show that thermal conductivity and specific heat measurements in insulating YbIr 3 Si 7 reveal emergent neutral excitations, whose properties are sensitively changed by a field-driven transition between two antiferromagnetic phases. In the low-field phase, a significant violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law demonstrates that YbIr 3 Si 7 is a charge insulator but a thermal metal. In the high-field phase, thermal conductivity exhibits a sharp drop below 300 mK, indicating a transition from a thermal metal into an insulator/semimetal driven by the magnetic transition. These results suggest that spin degrees of freedom directly couple to the neutral fermions, whose emergent Fermi surface undergoes a field-driven instability at low temperatures.

Haldane topological spin-1 chains in a planar metal-organic framework

Haldane topological materials contain unique antiferromagnetic chains with symmetry-protected energy gaps. Such materials have potential applications in spintronics and future quantum computers. Haldane topological solids typically consist of spin-1 chains embedded in extended three-dimensional (3D) crystal structures. Here, we demonstrate that [Ni(μ-4,4'-bipyridine)(μ-oxalate)] n (NiBO) instead adopts a two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) structure of Ni 2+ spin-1 chains weakly linked by 4,4'-bipyridine. NiBO exhibits Haldane topological properties with a gap between the singlet ground state and the triplet excited state. The latter is split by weak axial and rhombic anisotropies. Several experimental probes, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction, variable-temperature powder neutron diffraction (VT-PND), VT inelastic neutron scattering (VT-INS), DC susceptibility and specific heat measurements, high-field electron spin resonance, and unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations, provide a detailed, comprehensive characterization of NiBO. Vibrational (also known as phonon) properties of NiBO have been probed by INS and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, indicating the absence of phonons near magnetic excitations in NiBO, suppressing spin-phonon coupling. The work here demonstrates that NiBO is indeed a rare 2D-MOF Haldane topological material.

Magnetic and electronic properties unveil polaron formation in Eu$$_5$$In$$_2$$Sb$$_6$$

Abstract The intermetallic compound Eu $$_5$$ 5 In $$_2$$ 2 Sb $$_6$$ 6 , an antiferromagnetic material with nonsymmorphic crystalline structure, is investigated by magnetic, electronic transport and specific heat measurements. Being a Zintl phase, insulating behavior is expected. Our thermodynamic and magnetotransport measurements along different crystallographic directions strongly indicate polaron formation well above the magnetic ordering temperatures. Pronounced anisotropies of the magnetic and transport properties even above the magnetic ordering temperature are observed despite the Eu $$^{2+}$$ 2 + configuration which testify to complex and competing magnetic interactions between these ions and give rise to intricate phase diagrams discussed in detail. Our results provide a comprehensive framework for further detailed study of this multifaceted compound with possible nontrivial topology.

Effect of non-stoichiometry and pressure on superconductivity in topological semimetal PdTe

Research into topological superconductivity has been at the forefront of condensed matter physics due to both fundamental interest and potential applications in quantum computing. PdTe, is such a superconductor with a transition temperature T c ∼ 4.5 K and exhibits a nontrivial topological electronic structure, thus receiving significant attention. We report an experimental and theoretical investigation of the pressure effect on superconductivity by applying chemical non-stoichiometry and hydrostatic pressure. While T c decreases with increasing pressure through electrical resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat measurements, chemical pressure has a distinct impact from hydrostatic pressure, which could increase T c by creating negative pressure via non-stoichiometric Pd x Te with x > 1. Accompanied with this is a sign change of the Hall coefficient from negative at x < 1 to positive at x > 1. This indicates extreme sensitivity of the electronic structure to chemical non-stoichiometry, which occurs as a Pd vacancy for x < 1 and Pd interstitial for x > 1.

Magnetic field induced modification of a first-order ferromagnetic transition in Eu 2 ⁢In

Here, we present a comprehensive study of the temperature-and magnetic-field-dependent magnetization, specific heat, and local crystal structure across the first-order ferromagnetic–paramagnetic transition in Eu 2 ⁢In. Anomalies in the magnetocaloric response are observed near 𝐻 ≈ 25 kOe, including changes in field scaling of magnetic entropy, local entropy exponent, and universal master curve, which suggest an apparent weakening of the first-order character of the transition. However, quantitative analysis of the magnetocaloric parameters together with modified Arrott plots demonstrates that the transition remains first order up to at least 70 kOe. Specific-heat measurements reveal a field-induced splitting of the sharp zero-field anomaly into a doublet, providing a natural explanation for the change in the magnetocaloric response. Magnetic-field-dependent extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements show no detectable field-induced changes in the local coordination environment of Eu. We therefore attribute these observations to a magnetic-field-induced two-step transition process in Eu 2 ⁢In.

Flat bands in the CoSn-type compounds

Quantum interference on the kagome lattice generates electronic bands with narrow bandwidth, called flat bands. Crystal structures incorporating this lattice can host strong electron correlations with nonstandard ingredients, but only if these bands lie at the Fermi level. In the six compounds with the CoSn structure type (FeGe, FeSn, CoSn, NiIn, RhPb, and PtTl) the transition metals form a kagome lattice. The two iron variants are robust antiferromagnets so we focus on the latter four and investigate their thermodynamic and transport properties. We consider these results and calculated band structures to locate and characterize the flat bands in these materials. Finally, we propose that CoSn and RhPb deserve the community's attention for exploring flat-band physics.

Avoided ferromagnetic quantum critical point in pressurized La 5 Co 2 Ge 3

We present the pressure-temperature phase diagram La 5 Co 2 Ge 3 up to ~ 5 GPa, which was constructed from magnetization, resistivity, and specific heat measurements. At ambient pressure, La 5 Co 2 Ge 3 is an itinerant ferromagnet with a Curie temperature T C ~ 4 K. Upon increasing pressure up to ~ 1.7 GPa, T C is suppressed down to ~ 3 K. Upon further increasing pressure, our results suggest that La 5 Co 2 Ge 3 enters a different low-temperature ground state. The corresponding transition temperature T* has a nonmonotonic pressure dependence up to ~ 5 GPa. Our results demonstrate that the ferromagnetic quantum critical point in La 5 Co 2 Ge 3 is avoided by the appearance of a different, likely magnetically ordered, state that has an antiferromagnetic component.

Magnetic properties and signatures of moment ordering in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet KCeO 2

The magnetic ground state and the crystalline electric field level scheme of the triangular lattice antiferromagnet KCeO 2 are investigated here. Below $T_N$ = 300 mK, KCeO 2 develops signatures of magnetic order in specific heat measurements and low energy inelastic neutron scattering data. Trivalent Ce 3+ ions in the $D_{3d}$ local environment of this compound exhibit large splittings among the lowest three 4$f^1$ Kramers doublets defining for the free ion the $\textit{J}$ = 5/2 sextet and a ground state doublet with dipole character, consistent with recent theoretical predictions by Eldeeb et al. [Phys. Rev. Materials 4, 124001 (2020)]. An unexplained, additional local mode appears, and potential origins of this anomalous mode are discussed.

Neutron scattering study of the kagome metal Sc 3 Mn 3 Al 7 Si 5

Sc 3 Mn 3 Al 7 Si 5 is a rare example of a correlated metal in which the Mn moments form a kagome lattice. The absence of magnetic ordering to the lowest temperatures suggests that geometrical frustration of magnetic interactions may lead to strong magnetic fluctuations. We have performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Sc 3 Mn 3 Al 7 Si 5 , finding that phonon scattering dominates for energies from ~20–50 meV. These results are in good agreement with ab initio calculations of the phonon dispersions and densities of states, and as well reproduce the measured specific heat. A weak magnetic signal was detected at energies less than ~10 meV, present only at the lowest temperatures. The magnetic signal is broad and quasielastic, as expected for metallic paramagnets.

Physical properties of YbFe 5 P 3 with a quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure

We report basic physical properties of the quasi-one-dimensional heavy-fermion compound Yb Fe 5 P 3 . Its magnetic susceptibility follows a modified Curie-Weiss behavior at high temperatures with a Weiss temperature between - 5 and - 21 K depending on the direction of the applied magnetic field. Our single crystals of Yb Fe 5 P 3 are good metals with a room-temperature resistivity of ~ 140 μ Ω cm and a residual resistivity of less than 2 μ Ω cm. Below ~ 2 K the resistivity reflects the presence of strong quantum fluctuations, which is supported by specific heat measurements that show a similar strong enhancement in C / T at low temperatures reaching 1.5 J/mol K 2 below T = 0.5 K. No magnetic ordering is observed down to 80 mK. Magnetic fields up to 8 T rapidly suppress the magnetic fluctuations, while resistivity measurements under pressures up to 2.54 GPa indicate the enhancement of quantum fluctuations, although still no order is observed down to 0.3 K. Density functional theory calculations suggest the presence of electronically quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Fermi surface sheets together with three-dimensional electronic pockets. We suggest that the quasi-1D nature of this compound leads to an extended regime of large quantum fluctuations within the paramagnetic state prior to reaching a magnetic instability.

Insulating antiferromagnetism in VTe

Here, we report a detailed theoretical and experimental study on the vanadium monotelluride VTe, which crystallizes in the NiAs hexagonal structure. First-principles calculations reveal a complex hierarchy of magnetic interactions and energy scales, with the ground state theoretically determined as an ($\frac{1}{2}$, 0, $\frac{1}{2}$) antiferromagnetic ordering with insulating character and a band gap of 0.5 eV. Experimental synthesis and characterization efforts find a substantially off-stoichiometric orthorhombic structure (a defect NiAs structure) with composition V 0.85 Te, and an apparent Néel point of some 45 K. First-principles calculations find good agreement with the observed Néel point. We also give an extended examination of the effects of off-stoichiometry on the calculated energetics, finding significant volume-related effects. Our first-principles calculations find the stoichiometric phase VTe to have a negative vanadium defect formation energy of over 1 eV, thus explaining the formation of the off-stoichiometric phase. Finally, we provide a structural explanation for the formation of defect structures in this and numerous other NiAs-structure materials.

Ground-state degeneracy and complex magnetism of geometrically frustrated Gd 2 Ir 0.97 Si 2.97

We report a new triangular-lattice intermetallic compound Gd 2 Ir 0.97 Si 2.97 was successfully synthesized as single phase by deliberately introducing vacancies. Theoretical analysis suggests that the ground state is competing with several low-energy spin configurations due to magnetic frustration on a nearly ideal triangular lattice. Despite a number of competing magnetic states, the compound exhibits long-range antiferromagnetic order at16K, a long-range ferrimagnetic transition at 6.5 K, and a reentrant cluster-glass transition below T f ~ 3K. The complex magnetism in the compound could be correlated with competing antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic structures predicted theoretically.
