Comparative study of machine learning techniques for post-combustion carbon capture systems

Computational analysis of countercurrent flows in packed absorption columns, often used in solvent-based post-combustion carbon capture systems (CCSs), is challenging. Typically, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approaches are used to simulate the interactions between a solvent, gas, and column's packing geometry while accounting for the thermodynamics, kinetics, heat, and mass transfer effects of the absorption process. These simulations can then be used explain a column's hydrodynamic characteristics and evaluate its CO 2 -capture efficiency. However, these approaches are computationally expensive, making it difficult to evaluate numerous designs and operating conditions to improve efficiency at industrial scales. In this work, we comprehensively explore the application of statistical ML methods, convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and graph neural networks (GNNs) to aid and accelerate the scale-up and design optimization of solvent-based post-combustion CCSs. We apply these methods to CFD datasets of countercurrent flows in absorption columns with structured packings characterized by several geometric parameters. We train models to use these parameters, inlet velocity conditions, and other model-specific representations of the column to estimate key determinants of CO 2 -capture efficiency without having to simulate additional CFD datasets. We also evaluate the impact of different input types on the accuracy and generalizability of each model. We discuss the strengths and limitations of each approach to further elucidate the role of CNNs, GNNs, and other machine learning approaches for CO 2 -capture property prediction and design optimization.

Chemometric modeling of power conversion efficiency of organic dyes in dye sensitized solar cells for the future renewable energy

The present study reports chemometric modeling of power conversion efficiency (PCE) of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) using the biggest available data set till date which comprises around 1200 dyes covering 7 chemical classes. To extract the best structural features required for higher PCE, we have developed multiple partial least squares (PLS) quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) models for the Triphenylamine, Phenothiazine, Indoline, Porphyrin, Coumarin, Carbazole and Diphenylamine chemical classes using descriptors derived from the best subset selection method followed by selection of best five models in each dataset based on the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) values. The models were validated both internally and externally followed by the consensus predictions employing “Intelligent Consensus Predictor” tool to examine whether the quality of predictions can be improved with the “intelligent” selection of multiple PLS models. The quality of predictions for the respective external sets showed that the consensus models (CM) are better than the individual models (IM) in most of the cases. From the insights of the developed models, we concluded that attributes like a packed structure toward higher conductivity of electrons, auxiliary donor fragment of aromatic tertiary amines, number of thiophenes inducing the bathochromic shift and augmenting the absorption, presence of additional electron donors, enhancement of electron-donating abilities, number of non-aromatic conjugated C(sp 2 ) which helps as conjugation extension units to broaden the absorption and highly conjugated $π$-systems exert positive contributions to the PCE. On the contrary, features negatively contributing to PCE are the followings: fragments which lower the tendency of localized $π–π*$ transition, fragments related to larger volume and surface area of dyes along with hydrophobicity resulting in poor adhesion, fragment RC = N causing dye hydrolysis, steric hindrance for π electronic mobility, fragments enhancing polarity, etc. Finally, the identified features from the best QSPR model of the coumarin dataset was employed in designing of ten more efficient coumarin dyes (predicted %PCE ranging from 8.93 to 10.62) than the existing ones.

Countercurrent flow characteristics of next generation solvent in novel 3D printed columns for carbon capture

Solvent based absorption for carbon dioxide capture in a packed column is being considered as an efficient technology for the decarbonization process of point source. Significant efforts are underway to improve the design of packings with the cutting edge 3D printing technology for efficient carbon capture. Accordingly, multiphase flow studies were conducted to assess the performance of novel 3D printed columns with various triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) designs. The effects of solvent properties, liquid and gas loads on the performance of TPMS columns are extensively explored. Hydrodynamics of the potential water-lean solvents (EEMPA) as well as aqueous monoethanolamine (MEA) solvent for carbon capture are evaluated and compared. The interfacial area and liquid holdup increase with increasing liquid loads (q L ) for TPMS columns. Schwarz column consistently shows the highest liquid holdup value. The EEMPA exhibits higher values for the interfacial area (10–15 %) and liquid holdup (~4 %) in comparison to the MEA. TPMS columns exhibit the intermediate value of dry pressure drop between the random and the structure packed columns. Among selected TPMS columns, the gyroid packing shows the lowest pressure drop. The gas load has marginal impact on the interfacial area at lower value while a higher gas load leads to column’s flooding. Prior to the flooding, the interfacial area in TMPS packings rises with increased gas load at a fixed liquid load except Schwarz packing where interfacial area is incentive to the gas load. Additionally, the liquid holdup and wet pressure drop rise as gas load increases in TPMS columns. Overall, Fisher Koch packing is more susceptible to flood as compared to other TPMS packings. Flow regimes: loading and flooding are also delineated in the TPMS packings.

F4‐TCNQ as an Additive to Impart Stretchable Semiconductors with High Mobility and Stability

Abstract Numerous strategies are developed to impart stretchability to polymer semiconductors. Although these methods improve the ductility, mobility, and stability of such stretchable semiconductors, they nonetheless still need further improvement. Here, it is shown that 2,3,5,6‐tetrafluoro‐7,7,8,8‐tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4‐TCNQ) is an effective molecular additive to tune the properties of a diketopyrrolopyrrole‐based (DPP‐based) semiconductor. Specifically, the addition of F4‐TCNQ is observed to improve the ductility of the semiconductor by altering the polymer’s microstructures and dynamic motions. As a p‐type dopant additive, F4‐TCNQ can also effectively enhance the mobility and stability of the semiconductor through changing the host polymer’s packing structures and charge trap passivation. Upon fabricating fully stretchable transistors with F4‐TCNQ‐DPP blended semiconductor films, it is observed that the resulting stretchable transistors possess one of the highest initial mobility of 1.03 cm 2 V −1 s −1 . The fabricated transistors also exhibit higher stability (both bias and environmental) and mobility retention under repeated strain, compared to those without F4‐TCNQ additive. These findings offer a new direction of research on stretchable semiconductors to facilitate future practical applications.

On the Electride Nature of Na–hP4

Early quantum mechanical models suggested that pressure drives solids towards free-electron metal behavior where the ions are locked into simple close-packed structures. The prediction and subsequent discovery of high-pressure electrides (HPEs), compounds assuming open structures where the valence electrons are localized in interstitial voids, required a paradigm shift. Our quantum chemical calculations on the iconic insulating Na-hP4 HPE show that increasing density causes a 3s→3pd electronic transition due to Pauli repulsion between the 1s2s and 3s states, and orthogonality of the 3pd states to the core. The large lobes of the resulting Na-pd hybrid orbitals point towards the center of an 11-membered penta-capped trigonal prism and overlap constructively, forming multicentered bonds, which are responsible for the emergence of the interstitial charge localization in Na-hP4. As a result, these multicentered bonds facilitate the increased density of this phase, which is key for its stabilization under pressure.

Benzotriazole‐Based Nonfused Ring Acceptors for Efficient and Thermally Stable Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Nonfused ring acceptors (NFRAs) have attracted significant attention for nonfullerene organic solar cells (OSCs) owing to their chemical tunability and facile synthesis. In this study, a benzotriazole‐based NFRA with chlorinated end groups (Triazole‐4Cl) is developed to realize highly efficient and thermally stable NFRA‐based OSCs; an analogous NFRA with nonchlorinated end groups (Triazole‐H) is synthesized for comparison. Triazole‐4Cl film exhibits the high‐order packing structure and the near‐infrared absorption capability, which are advantageous in charge transport and light harvesting of the resulting OSCs. In particular, the strong crystalline behavior of Triazole‐4Cl results in enhanced self‐aggregation, leading to high charge carrier mobility. Owing to these properties, a PBDB‐T (polymer donor):Triazole‐4Cl OSC demonstrates a high short‐circuit current, fill factor, and power conversion efficiency (PCE = 10.46%), outperforming a PBDB‐T:Triazole‐H OSC (PCE = 7.65%). In addition, the thermal stability of a PBDB‐T:Triazole‐4Cl OSC at an elevated temperature of 120 °C exceeds that of a PBDB‐T:Triazole‐H OSC. This is mainly attributed to the significantly higher cold crystallization temperature of Triazole‐4Cl (205.9 °C). This work provides useful guidelines for the design of NFRAs to achieve efficient and thermally stable NFRA‐based OSCs.

Layers Can Be Deceiving: A Hopping Model for Small Molecule Diffusion in TATB Crystal

Sorption of small molecule gases in materials can play a significant role in their long‐term stability and compatibility within multi‐material assemblies. While many material properties of the insensitive high explosive TATB (1,3,5‐triamino‐2,4,6‐trinitrobenzene) are well understood, very little is known regarding its permeability to gases. TATB crystal exhibits a graphitic‐like layered packing structure that evokes a mental schema in which the layers form nanoscopic channels, but it is unclear whether this structure promotes gas transport. Here, we use molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to predict transport of small molecules through TATB single crystal. An approach to fit classical force fields is developed to model TATB interactions with H 2 O, He, Ne, and Ar, which is then combined with steered MD to probe gas transport along selected directions in the crystal. We find that small molecule transport occurs via a hopping mechanism that exhibits distinct jumps between interstitial sites and is substantially faster normal to the layers as compared to through them. This result stems from the finding that intralayer junctions between adjacent TATB molecules are the most stable interstitial sites and that energetic barriers are lower for hopping between adjacent layers. An empirical model for diffusion rate based on the MD data shows that the rate decays exponentially with increasing molecular radius and is negligibly small for all molecules larger than He, including common atmospheric gases. These findings have implications for the interpretation of experiments that measure surface area, material response to extreme conditions, and are expected to help constrain models for material aging.

Large-Area Periodic Arrays of Atomically Flat Single-Crystal Gold Nanotriangles Formed Directly on Substrate Surfaces

The advancement of nanoenabled wafer-based devices requires the establishment of core competencies related to the deterministic positioning of nanometric building blocks over large areas. Within this realm, plasmonic single-crystal gold nanotriangles represent one of the most attractive nanoscale components but where the formation of addressable arrays at scale has heretofore proven impracticable. In this work, a benchtop process is presented for the formation of large-area periodic arrays of gold nanotriangles. The devised growth pathway sees the formation of an array of defect-laden seeds using lithographic and vapor-phase assembly processes followed by their placement in a growth solution promoting planar growth and threefold symmetric side-faceting. The nanotriangles formed in this high-yield synthesis distinguish themselves in that they are epitaxially aligned with the underlying substrate, grown to thicknesses that are not readily obtainable in colloidal syntheses, and present atomically flat pristine surfaces exhibiting gold atoms with a close-packed structure. As such, they express crisp and unambiguous plasmonic modes and form photoactive surfaces with highly tunable and readily modeled plasmon resonances. The devised methods, hence, advance the integration of single-crystal gold nanotriangles into device platforms and provide an overall fabrication strategy that is adaptable to other nanomaterials.

High-performance n-Type Polymers Based on Multiple Electron-withdrawing Groups Decorated ( E )-1,2-Di(thiophen-2-yl)ethene Building Blocks

The performance of n-type conjugated polymers lags far behind that of p-type polymers, which significantly restricts the development of organic electronics. The (E)-1,2-di(thiophen-2-yl)ethene (TVT) unit, owing to its unique advantages, has been widely applied in the design of p-type polymer semiconductors. Previous studies have demonstrated that introducing electron-withdrawing groups can lower the frontier orbital energy levels of polymers and enhance electron injection/transporting capabilities. Based on this, we proposed incorporating multiple electronwithdrawing groups, such as amide groups, fluorine atoms, and cyano groups, into the polymer backbones of TVT-based polymer to facilitate the electron transport. Here, we successfully designed and synthesized the polymers TVTDA-4FTVT and TVTDA-2F2CNTVT. Both polymers exhibited low frontier orbital energy levels. Due to its significantly higher crystallization tendency and favorable intermolecular packing structure, the organic field-effect transistor (OFET) device based on TVTDA-4FTVT demonstrated an electron mobility one order of magnitude higher than that of TVTDA-2F2CNTVT. TVTDA-4FTVT showed the highest electron mobility of 0.87 cm 2 ·V −1 ·s −1 , while TVTDA-2F2CNTVT exhibited the highest electron mobility of 0.049 cm 2 ·V −1 ·s −1 . Owing to its deeper lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level, the OFET devices based on TVTDA-2F2CNTVT showed good air stability after being placed in a natural environment for 15 d.

Creative absorber design and optimization for CO 2 capture with aqueous piperazine

The Texas Carbon Management Program is preparing a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) of the PZASTM (Piperazine with the Advanced Stripper TM ) for CO 2 capture at a natural gas combined cycle power plant in West Texas. This paper develops the absorber design for the capture system and studies the operational strategies of the absorber in response to ambient temperature swing. The design uses 2 absorber trains, and each train integrates absorption and a water-wash section in one column. Each column has a cross-section area of 174 m 2 and consists of 3 sections of MellapakPlus® 252Y structured packing. Packing heights for each section are 3, 4.9, and 2.7 m from top to bottom. A pump-around intercooler applied at the bottom bed circulates solvent and eliminates the direct contact cooler. The baseline CO 2 removal rate is 90% and will vary between 78% and 90% with ambient temperature. The system uses air cooling to eliminate cooling water usage. The water balance in the system will be managed by operating the water wash at a high circulation rate (1300 kg/h) to condense water during the night and make up for water loss during the day. Finally, the proposed design reduces the capital cost of the absorber column by minimizing the packing height and eliminating the direct contact cooler (DCC), and improves the energy cost by lowering the pump-around intercooling temperature and increasing the pump-around rate.

In-situ imaging of nucleation and growth of superlattices from nanoscale colloidal nanoparticles

Nanoparticle-based superlattices have attracted extensive research efforts due to their versatile composition and packing-dependent optical, magnetic, electronic, catalytic, mechanical properties. Yet the experimental understanding of the thermodynamics and pathways of the crystallization processes for these systems, which govern their ultimate morphology, size, and packing structure, has for long remained underexplored. Here, this minireview highlights recent integration of liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy, which allows for real-space, real-time direct imaging of the crystallization processes at the single-particle level, with simulation and the conceptual framework established by pioneers such as Dr. A. A. Chernov. Different aspects of superlattice formation were revealed by direct imaging for the first time, such as the existence of prenucleation precursor in nonclassical crystallization, surface energy-dependent growth, and coalescence, allowing for the charting of phase coordinates and thermodynamic quantities at the nanoscale. We discuss the similarities and differences of crystal growth behaviors in atomic and nanoparticle systems, as well as engineering opportunities to fashion, shape, and achieve quality control in superlattice formation from nanoparticles, for next-generation optical and mechanical metamaterials.

In situ investigation of the deformation behaviors of Fe 20 Co 30 Cr 25 Ni 25 and Fe 20 Co 30 Cr 30 Ni 20 high entropy alloys by high-energy X-ray diffraction

In situ synchrotron-based high-energy X-ray diffraction (HE-XRD) technique was employed to investigate the mechanical behaviors and microstructural evolution of face-centered cubic (FCC) Fe 20 Co 30 Cr 25 Ni 25 and Fe 20 Co 30 Cr 30 Ni 20 high entropy alloys (HEAs) during tensile deformation. Fe 20 Co 30 Cr 30 Ni 20 HEA has a good combination of strength (ultimate tensile strength of 864 ± 35 MPa) and ductility (elongation of 0.627 ± 0.021). The HE-XRD investigation reveals that Fe 20 Co 30 Cr 30 Ni 20 HEA has the transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect, which starts at a critical stress of ~555 MPa. Furthermore, transmission electron microscopy confirmed this deformation-induced new phase is hexagonal-close-packed structured ε-martensite, which follows an orientation relationship of {111} γ //(0001) ε , and (110) γ //[11 2 ¯ 0] ε with the FCC γ matrix. The observation of deformation twins in the deformed samples of the two studied HEAs proves that twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) effect occurs in both HEAs. The combination of TRIP and TWIP effects lead to the high strength, large ductility and improved strain hardening behavior of Fe 20 Co 30 Cr 30 Ni 20 HEA.

Free volume manipulation of a 6FDA-HAB polyimide using a solid-state protection/deprotection strategy

We report tert-butoxycarbonyl (t-BOC) is a thermally labile moiety that can be used to protect hydroxyl groups on polymers. In this study, t-BOC was appended onto a polyimide consisting of 2,2'-bis-(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride (6FDA) and 3,3'-dihydroxy-4,4'-diamino-biphenyl (HAB), after which the polymer was formed into self-standing films. Solid-state thermal treatments were performed to systematically remove t-BOC moieties to alter the physical packing structure and concomitant gas transport properties of the polymer. Despite performing deprotection reactions well below the glass transition temperature of 6FDA-HAB (~300 °C), this free volume manipulation (FVM) approach produced only subtle differences in polymer density, fractional free volume, average free volume element size, and gas transport properties relative to the unprotected polymer. While these findings suggest that thermally removing covalently bound functional groups from polymer films can be used to manipulate free volume and gas transport performance for glassy polymers, more robust polymer systems than linear polyimides are required to preserve the nascent free volume architecture generated from this approach.

Melting line and thermal equation of state of fcc-cobalt: A combined experimental and computational approach

The melting line of cobalt has been investigated both experimentally, using synchrotron X-ray diffraction coupled with laser-heated diamond anvil cells, and theoretically, using ab initio simulations. Over the investigated pressure and temperature range – between 30 and 100 GPa and from ambient temperature up to 4000 K – the hexagonal close-packed structure, stable at ambient conditions, is replaced at high temperature by the face-centered cubic structure, observed stable till melting. The melting temperatures obtained by the two methods are in remarkable agreement and the melting line can be well described by a Simon–Glatzel equation of the form T$_m$ = 1768(K)(P(GPa)/35.62+1) 0.64 . Finally, from the obtained results it was possible to determine a thermal equation of state for the cubic face-centered phase of Co.

An effective air–liquid contactor for CO 2 direct air capture using aqueous solvents

Here, the development of a cost-effective, corrosion resistant, high-flux direct air capture (HiDAC) contactor for a solvent-based direct air capture (DAC) process is reported. Literature technoeconomic analyses suggest that the air–liquid contactor can cost over 20 % of the overall DAC plant’s annualized capital costs. To bring down the overall cost of DAC, it is imperative that an effective contactor is developed. A hybrid contactor consisting of a commercial polyvinylchloride structured packing enhanced with stainless-steel 410 random packing has been developed to provide a high surface area for air–liquid contact. The contactor geometry, wettability, corrosion resistance, pressure drop, along with its CO 2 uptake efficiency, CO 2 uptake rates, and extended loading potential using potassium sarcosinate solutions are investigated. Results show that the HiDAC contactor has a relatively high specific surface area (885 m 2 /m 3 ), which allows for CO 2 uptake efficiencies of up to 75 % and capture rates of up to 550 g of CO 2 per day for a 0.3 × 0.25 × 0.3 m contactor. The contactor also exhibits high levels of wettability and corrosion resistance with amino acid-based DAC solvents. A CO 2 uptake model was developed, and modeling results are compared to experimental data to simulate and predict the performance of the contactor in a DAC process using potassium sarcosinate solvent. The system’s overall mass transfer coefficient and theoretical pressure drop were also calculated, and these results were compared to DAC data found in literature. The results presented indicate that the HiDAC contactor is well suited for DAC due to its high specific surface area, resistance to corrosion, and high degree of wettability.

Observation of Stepwise Ultrafast Crystallization Kinetics of Donor–Acceptor Conjugated Polymers and Correlation with Field Effect Mobility

The semicrystalline microstructures of donor-acceptor conjugated polymers strongly impact their optoelectronic properties. The control of the microstructure relies on the understandings of the crystallization processes in these polymers, from packing structures to crystallization kinetics. How fast these conjugated polymer chains crystallize and how their chemical structures and pre-existing microstructure history influence their crystallization have so far remained unclear, due to the fast crystallization rate caused by chain rigid structures and strong interactions. Here, ultrafast scanning calorimetry (FSC) is employed to reveal the crystallization behaviors of high perform- ance diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based conjugated polymers with scanning rates up to 500 000 K/s. Through elaborately designed nonisothermal and isothermal crystallization studies, we probed the fast crystallization kinetics and extracted the two-step crystallization process of these polymers quantitatively. We found that both the rigidity of the chain backbones and the preinduced crystalline microstructures can influence the crystallization rate over an order of magnitude at the same degree of undercooling. We further demonstrated the manipulated crystallization kinetics in the DPP-based polymer films with different amounts of preinduced crystallites and correlate it to the polymers’ charge transport mobility.

Fundamental Thermodynamic, Kinetic, and Mechanical Properties of Lithium and Its Alloys

Lithium alloying reactions are beneficial in promoting uniform plating and stripping of lithium metal in all-solid-state batteries. First-principles calculations are performed to predict thermodynamic, kinetic, and mechanical properties of lithium and several important Li–M alloys (M = Mg, Ag, Zn, Al, Ga, In, Sn, Sb, and Bi). While the Li–Mg binary system forms a solid solution, most other lithium–metal alloys prefer stoichiometric intermetallic compounds with common local motifs that enable fast Li diffusion. Lithium and Li-rich alloys exhibit an unusually flat energy landscape along paths that connect BCC to close-packed structures like FCC and HCP, with important implications for mechanical properties. Very low migration barriers for Li diffusion that rival those of superion conductors are predicted, both in pure Li and in Li–M intermetallics. However, vacancy concentration, which is crucial for substitutional diffusion, is predicted to be low in metallic Li and most Li–M intermetallics. Compounds such as B32 LiAl and LiGa as well as D0 3 Li 3 Sb and Li 3 Bi exhibit structural vacancies at higher ends of their voltage windows, which together with low migration barriers leads to exceptionally high Li mobilities. In the Li–Mg solid solution, the addition of Mg is found to decrease the vacancy tracer diffusion coefficient by an order of magnitude.

Monofluorination of Naphthyls Promotes the Cofacial π–π Stacking and Increases the Electron Mobility of Non-Planar Zinc(II) Complexes of Di(naphthylethynyl)azadipyrromethene

The homoleptic zinc(II) complex of [2,8-di(1-naphthylethynyl) 3,7-diphenyl 1,9-(4-hexylphenyl)azadipyrromethene (ZnL2) 2 ] is a promising non-planar non-fullerene acceptor for organic photovoltaic applications, but it has a relatively low electron mobility that may limit its performance. Here, we explored the fluorination of peripheral aryl groups to increase intermolecular cofacial π–π stacking interactions, which are desirable for electron transport. Here complexes with fluorine on the distal phenyls [Zn(1F-L2) 2 ], on the naphthyls [Zn(2F-L2) 2 ], and on both [Zn(3F-L2) 2 ] were synthesized and characterized. All three complexes had similar optical and electrochemical properties. The crystal packing structure of Zn(2F-L2) 2 and Zn(3F-L2) 2 revealed cofacial parallel-displaced π–π stacking between the fluorinated 1-naphthylethynyl groups. Such a cofacial orientation was not observed in Zn(L2) 2 crystals, suggesting that fluorination of the naphthyl groups promotes the cofacial π–π stacking orientation. The hole mobility increased from 1.0 × 10 –4 cm 2 V –1 s –1 for Zn(L2) 2 to 0.8–1.0 × 10 –3 cm 2 V –1 s –1 for the fluorinated complexes. Fluorination on the naphthyl groups increased the electron mobility from 4.2 × 10 –5 cm 2 V –1 s –1 for Zn(L2) 2 and Zn(1F-L2) 2 to 2.0 × 10 –4 cm 2 V –1 s –1 for Zn(2F-L2) 2 and Zn(3F-L2) 2 , consistent with cofacial π–π stacking being favorable for electron transport. The three complexes were tested in OPVs using regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as the p-type material, and the best power conversion efficiencies were 5.2, 5.4, and 5.8% for Zn(2F-L2) 2 , Zn(1F-L2) 2 , and Zn(3F-L2) 2 , respectively, compared to 5.5% for Zn(L2) 2 . The fluorination combination found in Zn(3F-L2) 2 resulted in the best device performance. This study points to a viable strategy to increase the electron mobility and performance of non-planar zinc(II) complexes of azadipyrromethene.
