IER 501: Pulsed Neutron Die-Away Experiments at LLNL [Slides]

This presentation notes the purpose of Pulsed Neutron Die Away (PNDA) for Thermal Neutron Scattering Law (TSL) validation. PNDA for TSL validation does not require fissile material. It consists of simple target shapes and compositions and is only sensitive to absorption and scattering of target medium. Well conducted experiments have uncertainties of 0.1% - 0.5%. This presentation also covers Pulsed Neutron Die Away Experiments, while noting previous experiments such as the FY22 PNDA Experiments. The presentation concludes with FY23 benchmarking efforts and a timeline to FY24.

Advancements in Validation of TSLs through Inelastic Neutron Scattering and Transmission Measurements [Abstract]

Historically, the free gas approximation has been used to treat the thermal scattering of neutrons with energies below a few electron-volts (eV) in unevaluated materials. However, this method inadequately reproduces neutron scattering at these energies. Until recently, only a limited number of materials had available thermal scattering law (TSL) files/libraries in the ENDF nuclear data libraries in this energy range. With advancements in atomistic modeling techniques, such as molecular dynamics, ab-initio molecular dynamics, and density functional theory, TSL libraries have become available for many more materials. This is particularly relevant due to the rising interest in several advanced reactor systems that require novel moderator and reflector materials. While quasi-integral and integral benchmarks have been designed to validate historically important moderator materials (such as light water and polyethylene), there is currently a lack of standard validation methods for TSLs, especially when multiple conflicting TSLs exist. To address this issue, the Oak Ridge National Lab Nuclear Data group has been working on utilizing inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements combined with transmission (i.e., total cross section) measurements to evaluate and validate TSLs for different materials. We plan to demonstrate how this method has worked on materials such as polyethylene, lucite, and polystyrene. In addition, we will compare the newly created libraries to ENDF libraries for these materials and explain why integral benchmarks should not be used for validation when multiple TSLs exist.

Achieving Multimodal and Multicolor Luminescence in LaAlO 3 :Pr 3+ , Gd 3+ via Trap Engineering and Energy Transfer

Achieving multimodal luminescence within a single phosphor is vital for multifunctional applications but remains challenging due to complex color tuning and trap engineering. In this study, we report Pr 3+ and Gd 3+ co‐doped LaAlO 3 (LAO:PG) phosphors, designed through careful modulation of multilevel traps and Pr 3+ → Gd 3+ energy transfer dynamics. These materials exhibit diverse luminescence modes, including down‐conversion luminescence (DCL), up‐conversion luminescence (UCL), persistent luminescence (PersL), optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), and thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) across a wide spectral range. Unlike previously studied Pr 3+ ‐doped LAO, the co‐doped LAO:PG shows DCL in both UV‐visible and NIR regions and displays ultraviolet‐C UCL under visible excitation. Notably, we observe, for the first time, PersL lasting several minutes in these phosphors—an improvement over the non‐PersL behavior of Pr 3+ ‐only doped LAO. Additionally, the LAO:PG phosphors exhibit strong OSL response. TSL analysis reveals five distinct trap levels linked to these properties. Density functional theory calculations further correlate intrinsic defects to these traps, supporting a proposed mechanism for the observed multimodal luminescence. These findings highlight LAO:PG as a promising platform for developing advanced phosphors with integrated luminescence modes, paving the way for future applications in data storage, phototherapy, and anti‐counterfeiting technologies.

Total thermal neutron cross section measurements of yttrium hydride from 0.0005 - 3 eV

Yttrium hydride serves as a neutron moderator material that enables compact, high temperature nuclear reactors. However, in order to accurately design and simulate a nuclear system relying upon yttrium hydride, the fundamental nuclear data of yttrium hydride must be well understood. Thermal neutron scattering law (TSL) evaluations represent an important aspect of nuclear data as thermal scattering can drastically alter the neutron multiplication factor of a system. Therefore, to support evaluation and validation of thermal neutron scattering for yttrium hydride, researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) performed total thermal neutron cross section measurements for YH 1.68 and YH 1.85 over the energy range of 0.0005 - 3 eV. Further, these measurements represent the first total cross section measurements for yttrium hydride that encompass the entire thermal region. Comparisons were made against the ENDF-B/VIII.0, Zerkle & Holmes and Oak Ridge National Laboratory TSL evaluations, where generally good agreement was found.

Total thermal neutron cross section measurements of hydrogen dense polymers from 0.0005–20 eV

Hydrogen dense polymers, specifically polyethylene, polystyrene, and Plexiglas, have served as neutron moderator and reflector materials in hundreds of separate critical benchmark experiments because of their low cost and abundance of hydrogen. In order to accurately model and simulate these critical benchmarks, the thermal scattering law (TSL) evaluation that governs how neutrons will thermalize must be well understood and rigorously validated. To support this validation, researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute performed total neutron cross section measurements for high-density polyethylene & polystyrene over the energy range 0.0005–20 eV and for Plexiglas G & Plexiglas G-UVT over the energy range 0.0005–3 eV. Comparisons were made between the measured cross section and that predicted by the ENDF/B-VIII.0 and Oak Ridge National Laboratory/European Spallation Source/Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute TSL evaluations for polyethylene, Plexiglas, and polystyrene, as available. These experiments represent the first total neutron cross section measurements for polystyrene.

Direct NeTS sampling of nuclear graphite $S(α, β, T)$ in Serpent

For advanced reactor applications, Neural Thermal Scattering (NeTS) modules were developed to predict the thermal scattering law (TSL or $S(α, β, T)$) of a nuclear graphite neutron moderator. NeTS are multi-layer, feedforward artificial neural networks, which act as universal function approximators designed for TSL datasets. In this case, a 4-layer neural network with 164 neurons per layer is trained using FLASSH evaluated data in PyTorch and serialized as a torchscript dictionary to predict $S(α, β, T)$ on-the-fly. Relative, absolute and maximum percent deviations of NeTS from File 7 data generated using the FLASSH code are on the order of 0.01%, 0.1% and 1%, respectively, with low inference latencies of 0.000172 s per $S(α, β, T)$ at a given temperature. Capturing the full dimensionality of possible inelastic neutron-lattice interactions, NeTS functionality is embedded in the Serpent Monte Carlo code, where $S(α, β, T)_{NeTS}$ sampling is conducted on-the-fly and compared to ACE look-up-tables for predicting TREAT criticality. k-eff differences between sampling algorithms of 6 pcm are observed and are within the order of Monte Carlo uncertainty. Compared to discrete and continuous-energy ACE files (30 MB and 131 MB per temperature), the NeTS format is on the order of 200–300 kB for a continuous-temperature, interpolation-free representation of $S(α, β, T)$ and cross sections. NeTS-in-Serpent runtimes comparable with ACE look-up tables are achieved by scaling NeTS for high performance computing architectures with hybrid OpenMP + MPI parallelization. This work validates a novel, self-contained reactor physics framework for predictive cross sections, and demonstrates a general methodology for embedding modern machine learning libraries within existing neutronic analysis frameworks.

Thermal Cross Section Measurements At The RPI LINAC

Recently, a cold moderator was designed and developed for use at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Linear Accelerator (RPI LINAC). This cold moderator proved to easily and safely couple to an existing neutron producing target, while enhancing neutron flux below 0.02 eV by up to a factor of 8 by cooling polyethylene down to 29 K. This cold moderator capability allowed for significantly improved counting statistics below 0.02 eV not previously possible due to a poor signal to background ratio. Additionally, testing was performed to characterize the energy resolution of the new cold moderator system and found the system easily capable of resolving resonances in Ta-181 at 4 and 10 eV, while also clearly resolving the Bragg edges found in Be metal below 0.01 eV. Furthermore, following the design and development of a cold polyethylene moderator, a series of thermal total cross section measurements were performed for polyethylene, polystyrene, Plexiglas and yttrium hydride in the thermal region. These measurements serve to help validate thermal scattering law (TSL) evaluations in the 0.0005 – 1 eV energy range. For polyethylene and polystyrene, two sets of experiments were performed – one with the Enhanced Thermal Target (ETT) and another with the ETT plus the new cold moderator capability (ETTC). The yttrium hydride and Plexiglas measurements were only performed with the ETTC. The measurements for polyethylene help to validate the data processing methodology when using the ETTC, while extending the measured range of polyethylene down to 0.0005 eV. Two different Plexiglas, Plexiglas G and Plexiglas G-UVT, and two different concentrations of yttrium hydride, H/Y = 1.85 and 1.68, were measured. Overall, all materials had generally good agreement with their ENDF/B-VIII.0 TSL evaluations, though some discrepancies were noticed. In the case of the yttrium hydride, the high energy oscillations in the hydrogen cross section and the low energy Bragg edges in the yttrium cross section were clearly seen. These measurements represent the first total cross section measurements that encompass the entire thermal region from 0.0005 – 1 eV for polystyrene and yttrium hydride.

Generation of the Thermal Scattering Law of Uranium Dioxide with Ab Initio Lattice Dynamics to Capture Crystal Binding Effects on Neutron Interactions

Scattering of thermal neutrons and Doppler broadening of epithermal neutron resonances in uranium and its compounds may be sensitive to crystal binding. The thermal scattering law (TSL) for uranium dioxide, which captures crystal binding effects, has been reevaluated for ENDF/B-VIII.0. Phonon spectra were generated using ab initio lattice dynamics for the paramagnetic phase and validated against experiment. Improved agreement with the Debye-Waller coefficient as a function of temperature is found relative to the spectrum used for the ENDF/B-VII.1 evaluation. The TSL was generated using the phonon expansion method within the NJOY nuclear data processing package and was found to be in reasonable agreement with inelastic neutron scattering measurements. The present evaluation predicts a reduction in the inelastic scattering cross section relative to ENDF/B-VII.1 and a total scattering cross section consistent with neutron transmission experiments

ENDF/B-VIII.1: Thermal Neutron Scattering Sublibrary

The thermal neutron scattering law (TSL) sublibrary aims to describe the interaction of incident neutrons at thermal or sub-thermal energies with different compound materials such fuels, moderators and special-purpose materials. In ENDF/B-VIII.1 there was a large number of new and updated TSL evaluations, including traditional moderators (light water, Beryllium metal, Beryllium Oxide, Calcium Hydride, plastics (Polystyrene and Lucite), graphite (reactor-grade and crystalline), anhydrous Hydrogen Fluoride, and heavy paraffinic oil); exotic moderators (Beryllium Carbide, Zirconium Hydride, Yttrium Hydride, Lithium-7 Hydride and Deuteride), FLiBe molten salt, structural materials and cladding (Silicon Carbide, Silicon Dioxide, Zirconium Carbide), fuels (Plutonium Dioxide, Uranium Carbide, Uranium metal, Uranium Nitride, Uranium Dioxide, Uranium Hydride), and special purpose materials. In ENDF/B-VIII.1 we also distribute alongside the evaluated files, a comma-separated file (CSV), named TSL_MAT_numbers.csv, which lists all evaluated files in the current release and their corresponding unique MAT number.

Thermal Neutron Scattering Law Evaluation for Zirconium Carbide and Critical Mass Calculations

Zirconium carbide (ZrC) is a candidate material for use in advanced high temperature reactors, including space nuclear thermal propulsion applications. Thermal neutron scattering laws (TSLs) are generated for carbon bound in ZrC, C(ZrC), and zirconium bound in ZrC, Zr(ZrC), using ab initio lattice dynamics methods. These evaluations are to be submitted for inclusion in ENDF/B-VIII.1 and use the incoherent approximation for inelastic scattering as well as the new mixed elastic scattering treatment. The application of disordered alloy theory is introduced to appropriately capture the isotopic composition of Zr and C in the elastic scattering cross section. Localized higher energy vibrations in the C(ZrC) phonon density of states that are separated from lower energy modes result in quantized oscillations in the inelastic contributions to the TSL with a significant likelihood of large energy down-scattering and up-scattering interactions, where the latter increases in probability with temperature. The quanta of energy transfer during neutron thermalization is substantially greater than classically expected within the thermal neutron energy range. MC21 critical mass calculations of ZrC mixtures with high-enriched uranium demonstrate an impact of the TSLs when compared to free-gas treatment for 235 U concentrations less than 0.2 g/cm 3 . Additional MC21 critical mass calculations with homogenous mixtures of ZrC and reactor-grade graphite also demonstrate sensitivity to the ZrC TSL for thermal spectrum driven fission systems.

Comparative Critical Mass Calculations for NNL and ENDF/B-VIII.0 Zirconium Hydride Thermal Scattering Laws [Slides]

Zirconium Hydride (ZrH x ) is a moderator material for TRIGA reactors and SNAP-10A.The thermal scattering has the behavior of quantum oscillator favorable for moderator feedback. ZrH x occurs as a corrosion product in LWR. Previously new phase specific TSL evaluations were generated and submitted to ENDF/B- VIII.1. These include the effects of crystal structure on elastic scattering of Zr(ZrH x ), permit flexibility in stoichiometry for use in reactor physics calculations and fuel characterization, and expand the TSL material sub-library. ENDF/B-VIII.0 ZrH TSLs do not distinguish between material phase. Current work involves preliminary validation & verification testing on the effect of TSLs on critical mass and associated thermal flux.

Thermal Neutron Scattering Law Benchmark and Validation at NCSU [Slides]

The presentation discusses how the NCSU graphite SDT ORELA experiment is under development as a benchmark. It discusses the testing of various ENDF/B-VII.1 and ENDF/B-VIII.0 graphite libraries that have been performed using the PROTEUS benchmark. The presentation demonstrates that the NSCU Polyethylene ENDF/B-VIII.0 TSL improves agreement with total cross section measurements. The presentation concludes by stating that the NCSU single crystal sapphire TSL library is based on realistic data.

Advancements in Validation of TSLs through Inelastic Neutron Scattering and Transmission Measurements [Slides]

This presentation finds that INS measurements are not as variable based on sample composition, because phonon spectra is a properly of the bulk material. Additionally, INS and transmission measurements are and should be the most significant part of TSL validation, as they are the fundamental quantities used by Monte Carlo neutronics codes. Relaying solely on theoretical atomistic calculations for TSL evaluation is not enough, they are highly dependent on inter-atomic potentials (which are not the most accurate depending on the quantity trying to be reproduced) and evaluators knowledge and understanding of the material being studied. When dealing with Crit. benchmarks - While extremely useful for validation of nuclear data at all energies, critical benchmarks are not the best tool to provide a definitive answer on conflicting TSLs. Finally, INS and transmission measurements need to be the basis of validation of TSLs.

Evaluation of δ-Phase ZrH1.4 to ZrH1.7 Thermal Neutron Scattering Laws Using Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Zirconium hydride is commonly used for next-generation reactor designs due to its excellent hydrogen retention capacity at temperatures below 1000 K. These types of reactors operate at thermal neutron energies and require accurate representation of thermal scattering laws (TSLs) to optimize moderator performance and evaluate the safety indicators for reactor design. In this work, we present an atomic-scale representation of sub-stoichiometric ZrH2−x(0.3≤x≤0.6), which relies on ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) in tandem with velocity auto-correlation (VAC) analysis to generate phonon density of states (DOS) for TSL development. The novel NJOY+NCrystal tool, developed by the European Spallation Source community, was utilized to generate the TSL formulations in the A Compact ENDF (ACE) format for its utility in neutron transport software. First, stoichiometric zirconium hydride cross sections were benchmarked with experiments. Then sub-stoichiometric zirconium hydride TSLs were developed. Significant deviations were observed between the new δ-phase ZrH2−x TSLs and the TSLs in the current ENDF release. It was also observed that varying the hydrogen vacancy defect concentration and sites did not cause as significant a change in the TSLs (e.g., ZrH1.4 vs. ZrH1.7) as was caused by the lattice transformation from ϵ- to δ-phase.

Exercise Thermoregulation Following 13 Days of Bed Rest

This investigation examined two potential mechanisms, altered skin blood flow (SBF) and sweating rate (SR) responses, that may be responsible for an elevated core temperature during exercise after bed rest (BR) and space flight. Seven healthy men (29 +/- 5 yr, 179.6 +/- 7.1 cm, 77.2 +/- 17.0kg; mean +/- SD) underwent 13 days of 6 deg head-down BR. Pre- and post-BR, subjects completed supine submaximal cycle ergometry (20 min at 40% and 20 min at 65% of pre-BR supine VO2pk) in a thermoneutral room (23.4 +/- 0.5 C, 56 +/- 8 %RH) during, heat production (VO2 ; indirect calorimetry), intestinal temperature (T(sub in) ; ingestible pill), SBF (laser Doppler velocimetry), local SR (dew point hygrometry), and total sweat loss (TSL; Delta body weight) were measured. Pre- and post- BR plasma volume (PV) was measured using I-125 dilution. After BR, T(sub in) was elevated at rest (36.99 +/- 0.14 vs. 37.30 +/- 0.06 C; p<_0.05) and at the end of exercise (37.57 +/- 0.13 vs. 37.90 +/- 0.09 C; P less than or equal to 0.05). However, the increase in T(sub in) from rest to the end of exercise was not different after BR (0.59 +/- 0.07 vs. 0.60 +/- 0.07 C). There was no difference in VO2 pre- to post-BR during rest (0.28 +/- 0.04 vs. 0.24 +/- 0.03 1 multiplied by min(exp -1) ) or 40% VO2pk (0.95 +/- 0.08 vs. 0.96 +/- 0.05 1 multiplied by min(exp -1)), but VO2 was significantly less at the end of the 65% VO2pk stage (1.53 +/- 0.09 vs. 1.42 +/- 0.11 1 multiplies by min(exp - 1); p less than or equal to 0.05). The percent change in SBF from rest to end of exercise was less after BR (211 +/- 53 vs. 96 +/- 31%; p less than or equal to 0.05), the threshold for the onset of SBF was greater (37.17 +/- 0.18vs. 37.51 +/- 0.17 C; p less than or equal to 0.05), and the slope of the response tended to be reduced (536 +/- 184 vs. 201 +/- 46 %A PC; p=0.08). TSL was not different after BR (0.42+0.06 vs. 0.44 +/- 0.08 kg), but the T in threshold at the onset of sweating was delayed significantly (37.06 +/- 0.1 1 vs. 37.34 +/- 0.06 C; p less than or equal to 0.05). However, the slope of SR was not changed after BR (3.45 +/- 1.22 vs. 2.58 +/- 0.71 mg multiplied by min(exp -1) multiplied by cm sq). PV was decreased by 11% after BR (3,259 +/- 177 vs. 2,894 +/- 138 ml; p less than or equal to 0.05). These results suggest that exercise SBF and SR responses after BR are altered, and heat production is unchanged or reduced, consistent with observations following space flight. The higher resting T(sub in) with a proportional increase in T(sub in) during exercise and delayed onset of SBF and SR suggest a centrally-mediated elevation in the thermoregulatory set point during microgravity exposure.

The Observed Relationship Between Water Vapor and Ozone in the Tropical Tropopause Saturation Layer and the Influence of Meridional Transport

We examine balloonsonde observations of water vapor and ozone from three Ticosonde campaigns over San Jose, Costa Rica [10 N, 84 W] during northern summer and a fourth during northern winter. The data from the summer campaigns show that the uppermost portion of the tropical tropopause layer between 360 and 380 K, which we term the tropopause saturation layer or TSL, is characterized by water vapor mixing ratios from proximately 3 to 15 ppmv and ozone from approximately 50 ppbv to 250 ppbv. In contrast, the atmospheric water vapor tape recorder at 380 K and above displays a more restricted 4-7 ppmv range in water vapor mixing ratio. From this perspective, most of the parcels in the TSL fall into two classes - those that need only additional radiative heating to rise into the tape recorder and those requiring some combination of additional dehydration and mixing with drier air. A substantial fraction of the latter class have ozone mixing ratios greater than 150 ppbv, and with water vapor greater than 7 ppmv this air may well have been transported into the tropics from the middle latitudes in conjunction with high-amplitude equatorial waves. We examine this possibility with both trajectory analysis and transport diagnostics based on HIRDLS ozone data. We apply the same approach to study the winter season. Here a very different regime obtains as the ozone-water vapor scatter diagram of the sonde data shows the stratosphere and troposphere to be clearly demarcated with little evidence of mixing in of middle latitude air parcels.

Trajectory Specification Applied to Terminal Airspace

Despite major efforts to automate air traffic control (ATC), it is still performed by humans today. The complexity and safety-criticality of ATC makes it very difficult to safely automate, but it must be automated to increase airspace capacity (the density of traffic that can be safely managed) and airport throughput (the number of arrivals and departures that an airport can safely handle in a given period of time) beyond what is possible with human controllers. This paper presents the Trajectory Specification (TS) concept, which can help to safely automate ATC. TS is a method of specifying aircraft trajectories such that the position at any given time in flight is restricted to a precisely defined bounding space, removing all ambiguity as to where the flight is allowed to be. The bounding space or volume is determined by tolerances relative to a reference trajectory (position as a function of time). The tolerances are dynamic and are based on the aircraft navigation capabilities and the traffic situation. The tolerances can be a piecewise linear function of time or distance along the route, allowing the tolerances to vary as needed, typically increasing with time for departures and decreasing for arrivals. A Trajectory Specification Language (TSL) is proposed for communicating trajectories from aircraft to ATC as requests and from ATC to aircraft as assignments. The TS concept requires a new generation of airborne Flight Management Systems (FMS) that understand the TSL and can fly the assigned trajectories, but this paper focuses on the ATC functions and the prototype ATC algorithms and software that were developed to test the TS concept. Assuming conformance, TS can guarantee safe separation for an arbitrary length of time even in the event of an ATC system or communication outage. It can help to achieve the high level of safety and reliability needed for ATC automation, and it can also reduce the reliance on ATC backup systems for tactical conflict detection and resolution during normal operation. TS can be applied to any controlled airspace, including enroute, terminal, and urban airspace, but this paper presents algorithms and software for arrival spacing and conflict detection and resolution in the terminal airspace serving a major airport. In a fast-time simulation of a full day of traffic in a major terminal airspace, all conflicts were resolved in near real time, demonstrating the computational feasibility and the preliminary operational feasibility of the TS concept. This paper is a compilation of previous papers, and it adds significant information that was omitted from those papers due to length limitations. It also updates some of the results of those earlier papers due to algorithm refinements and corrections of minor software errors.
