Functionalization of Electrodes with Tunable [EMIM] x [Cl] x +1 – Ionic Liquid Clusters for Electrochemical Separations

Functionalization of electrodes with clusters of hydrophobic molecules may improve the energy efficiency and selectivity of electrochemical separations by modulating the desolvation process occurring at the interface. Ionic liquids (IL), which have a broad range of compositions and properties, are potential candidates for controlling the transport, desolvation, and adsorption of target ions at electrochemical interfaces. We report a joint experimental and theoretical investigation of the structure, stability, and selective adsorption properties of the IL clusters 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [EMIM] x [Cl] x+1 - (x = 1 – 10) and demonstrate their ability to adsorb and separate ions from solution. The structure and stability of the IL clusters are determined experimentally using high-mass-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, collision-induced dissociation, and negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy. Global optimization theory and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations provide molecular-level insight into the bonding and structural fluxionality of these species. Ion soft landing is used to selectively functionalize the surface of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) working electrodes with [EMIM] 1 [Cl] 2 - , [EMIM] 3 [Cl] 4 - , and [EMIM] 5 [Cl] 6 - clusters. Kelvin probe microscopy provides insight into the relative stability of the clusters on HOPG and their effect on the work function of IL-functionalized electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry measurements reveal irreversible adsorption of Fe(CN) 6 4-/3- anions during redox cycling, while electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicates a substantial decrease in the electron transfer resistance of the IL-functionalized electrodes due to adsorption of Fe(CN) 6 4-/3- . Overall, our findings demonstrate that IL clusters with different size and stoichiometry may be used to increase the efficiency of electrochemical separations, opening new horizons in selective electrode functionalization.

Quantifying Species Populations in Multivalent Borohydride Electrolytes

Multivalent batteries represent an important beyond Li-ion energy storage concept. The prospect of calcium batteries, in particular, has emerged recently due to novel electrolyte demonstrations, especially that of a ground-breaking combination of the borohydride salt Ca(BH 4 ) 2 dissolved in tetrahydrofuran. Recent analysis of magnesium and calcium versions of this electrolyte led to the identification of divergent speciation pathways for Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ despite identical anions and solvents, owing to differences in cation size and attendant flexibility of coordination. To test these proposed speciation equilibria and develop a more quantitative understanding thereof, we have applied pulsed-field-gradient nuclear magnetic resonance and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy to study these electrolytes. Additionally, concentration-dependent variation in anion diffusivities and solution dipole relaxations, interpreted with the aid of molecular dynamics simulations, confirms these divergent Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ speciation pathways. These results provide a more quantitative description of the electroactive species populations. We find that these species are present in relatively small quantities, even in the highly active Ca(BH 4 ) 2 /tetrahydrofuran electrolyte. This finding helps interpret previous characterizations of metal deposition efficiency and morphology control and thus provides important fundamental insight into the dynamic properties of multivalent electrolytes for next-generation batteries.

Simplified Method for the In Situ Collection and Laboratory Analysis of Cosmogenic Tracers (Sulfur-35 and Sodium-22) to Determine Residence Time Distributions and Water Ages

The use of cosmogenically produced sulfur-35 (T 1/2 = 87 days) and sodium-22 (T 1/2 = 2.6 years) as intrinsic tracers can provide valuable information on catchment hydrology, flow paths, and subsurface storage. A new and straightforward method was created to determine the activities of both 35 S and 22 Na in various water sources by pumping large volumes (up to 1000 L) of water through cation- and anion-exchange resin columns in the field to collect sodium and sulfate ions and simple chemistry in the lab. Samples are counted for 35 S using liquid scintillation counting (LSC) and for 22 Na via γ spectroscopy. Our novel in situ method provides faster sample throughput as well as better counting statistics and lower detection limits. Both methods were successfully applied at the Southern Sierra Critical Zone Observatory.

Water Network Shape-Dependence of Local Interactions with the Microhydrated –NO 2 – and –CO 2 – Anionic Head Groups by Cold Ion Vibrational Spectroscopy

We report the structural evolutions of water networks and solvatochromic response of the CH 3 NO 2 – radical anion in the OH and CH stretching regions by analysis of the vibrational spectra displayed by cryogenically cooled CH 3 NO 2 – ·(H 2 O) n=1–6 clusters. The OH stretching bands evolve with a surprisingly large discontinuity at n = 6, which features the emergence of an intense, strongly red-shifted band along with a weaker feature that appears in the region assigned to a free OH fundamental. Very similar behavior is displayed by the perdeuterated carboxylate clusters, RCO 2 – ·(H 2 O) n=5–7 (R = CD 3 CD 2 ), indicating that this behavior is a general feature in the microhydration of the triatomic anionic domain and not associated with CH oscillators. Electronic structure calculations trace this behavior to the formation of a “book” isomer of the water hexamer that adopts a configuration in which one of the water molecules resides in an acceptor–acceptor–donor (AAD) (A = acceptor, D = donor) H-bonding site. Excitation of the bound OH in the AAD site explores the local network topology best suited to stabilize an incipient –XO 2 H–OH–(H 2 O) 2 intracluster proton-transfer reaction. These systems thus provide particularly clear examples where the network shape controls the potential energy landscape that governs water network-mediated, intracluster proton transfer. The CH stretching bands of the CH 3 NO 2 – ·(H 2 O) n=1–6 clusters also exhibit strong solvatochromic shifts, but in this case, they smoothly blue-shift with increasing hydration with no discontinuity at n = 6. Furthermore, this behavior is analyzed in the context of the solute-ion polarizability response and partial charge transfer to the water networks.

Exploring the Role of Neutral 4-Amino-1,2,4-triazole in the Formation of Hexanuclear f-Element Hydrolysis Products

Our recent observations of an unexpected Ce(III) hydrolysis product from the reaction of 4-amino-1,2,4-triazole (4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) with CeCl 3 ·7H 2 O, [Ce 6 (μ 3 -O) 4 (μ 3 -OH) 2 (μ 3 -Cl) 2 (Cl) 6 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 12 ]·7H 2 O, the first high-nuclearity lanthanide complex where all Ln atoms are connected pairwise through 12 N-donor ligands or 12 neutral bridging ligands of any type, prompted us to explore the utility of this ligand in trapping additional f-element examples. Reactions of LnCl 3 ·6H 2 O (Ln = Nd, Eu, Ho) with a large excess of 4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz (20 equiv) and with the addition of small amounts of water to help solubilize the metal salts led to the isolation of the unique hydrolysis products [Nd 6 (μ 3 -OH) 8 Cl 6 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 12 ][Cl 4 ]·2H 2 O, [Eu 6 (μ 6 -Cl) 0.23 (μ 3 -O 0.77 ) 4 (μ 3 -O) 2.6 (μ 3 -Cl) 0.4 Cl 6 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 12 ], and [Ho 6 (μ 6 -Cl) 0.21 (μ 3 -O 0.79 ) 4 (μ 3 -OH) 2 Cl 6 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 12 ][Cl] 3.4 . Here, we also report a Ce(III) analogue prepared in glassware contaminated with Pb(OAc) 2 , namely, [Ce 6 (μ 3 -OH) 8 (BrPbBr 5 )(μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 11.5 (OH 2 ) 6 ][Pb 0.84 Br 4.2 ][Br] 3.8 ·2(4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz)·3.6H 2 O. The Nd(III) complex is the structurally most ordered with a clear [Nd 6 (μ 3 -OH) 8 ] cluster core, while the Eu(III) and Ho(III) compounds contain partial occupancy of a μ 6 position and thus result in an incomplete Ln 6 O 9 cluster core formation. The crystallographic results suggest that the 4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz ligand brings Ln(III) ions together, followed by the formation of an Ln 6 O 8 or Ln 6 O 9 core with whatever remaining anions or ligands can be incorporated. Given the complexity of the hydrolysis products of nuclear waste, we expect to continue to find a myriad of closely related complex structures of these types for the f-elements.

Relationship of the Molecular Structure and Transport Properties of Imide-Based Lithium Salts of “Acetonitrile/Water-in-Salt” Electrolytes

“Water-in-salt” (WIS) electrolytes exhibit excellent safety and electrochemical performance. However, they possess high concentrations, relatively low diffusion coefficient, and high viscosity. “Acetonitrile/water in salt” (AWIS) electrolytes can overcome the disadvantages of WIS electrolytes. Under relatively low concentrations, AWIS electrolytes show good electrochemical performance comparable to WIS electrolytes and low conductivity. Herein, we investigate the relationship between the solvation structures and the transport properties using small-angle X-ray scattering and molecular dynamics simulation. We observed two solvation behaviors of AWIS: anions dissolved in acetonitrile forming small acetonitrile/anion clusters and additional water further dissolving the small acetonitrile/anion clusters. The introduction of acetonitrile weakens the water–solute interaction and enhances the cation–anion interaction, which results in an enhanced dynamical slowdown as the concentration increases. In conclusion, this work provides molecular-level understanding of the connection between two-stage solvation structures and transport properties for imide-based lithium salt solutions.

Negative Ion Chemistry in the Coma of Comet 1P/Halley

Negative ions (anions) were identified in the coma of comet 1P/Halley from in-situ measurements performed by the Giotto spacecraft in 1986. These anions were detected with masses in the range 7-110 amu, but with insufficient mass resolution to permit unambiguous identification. We present details of a new chemical-hydrodynamic model for the coma of comet Halley that includes - for the first time - atomic and molecular anions, in addition to a comprehensive hydrocarbon chemistry. Anion number densities arc calculated as a function of radius in the coma, and compared with the Giotto results. Important anion production mechanisms arc found to include radiative electron attachment, polar photodissociation, dissociative electron attachment, and proton transfer. The polyyne anions C4H(-) and C6H(-) arc found to be likely candidates to explain the Giotto anion mass spectrum in the range 49-73 amu. Thc CN(-) anion probably makes a significant contribution to the mass spectrum at 26 amu. Larger carbon-chain anions such as C8H(1) can explain the peak near 100 amu provided there is a source of large carbon-chain-bearing molecules from the cometary nucleus.

Next-generation anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers operating for commercially relevant lifetimes

Alkaline anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis has gained increasing attention due to its potential to achieve low-cost, high performance hydrogen production. However, most existing membranes are not durable in industrial settings. In this work, we demonstrate good performance relative to industrial parameters using Sustainion® anion exchange membranes. Long-duration tests showed stable performance of 1 A/cm 2 at 1.85 V with a degradation rate of less than 1 μV/h over 10,000 h. The projected lifetime is thus over 20 years. Daily on/off cycling performance over the course of 30 years was simulated experimentally through accelerated voltage shock tests, resulting in a performance loss of only 0.15 μV/cycle over 11,000 cycles. As shown through impact and crossover testing, an improvement in performance is achieved by the addition of zirconia to the polymer matrix and mechanically reinforcing the membrane.

Selective acetate recognition and sensing using SWCNTs functionalized with croconamides

Croconamides are a new class of dual-hydrogen bond donors that have attracted interest in anion recognition and sensing applications due to their strong H-bond donation capability. In this work, we report chemiresistive sensors for the detection of anions based on poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP)-wrapped single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) functionalized with croconamide-based selectors. Model structures of asymmetric N,N-substituted croconamide selectors with N,N-substitutional groups of alkyl cationic pyridinium and electron-withdrawing moieties such as aniline (6) and 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl (7) groups were synthesized and their binding affinities for various anions were characterized using UV–vis and 1 H NMR titrations. Switchable binding of oxoanions was observed with selector 7, wherein HSO 4 – formed hydrogen bonding interactions and acetate (AcO – ) induced deprotonation of the NH- protons of the croconamide. Large sensitivity transitions were obtained toward AcO – for both P4VP-6-SWCNT (S = 95.68 ± 2.11 %) and P4VP-7-SWCNT (S = 140.91 ± 3.68 %) at 83.33 mM, which was attributed to deprotonation of the croconamide selectors upon addition of AcO – . In conclusion, three serial sensors were assembled in a sensor array that rapid and selective screening of AcO – was demonstrated against other oxoanions such as HSO 4 – and H 2 PO 4 – in real-time.

Understanding Gas Solubility of Pure Component and Binary Mixtures within Multivalent Ionic Liquids from Molecular Simulations

Understanding the molecular-level solubility of CO 2 and its mixtures is essential to the progress of gas treating technologies. Herein, we use grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations to study the single component gas absorption of SO 2 , N 2 , CH 4 , and H 2 , and binary mixtures of CO 2 /SO 2 , CO 2 /N 2 , CO 2 /CH 4 , and CO 2 /H 2 of varying mole fractions within multivalent ionic liquids (ILs). Our results highlight the importance of the free volume effect and the anion effect when interpreting the absorption behavior of these mixtures, similar to the behavior of CO 2 found in our previous study. The deviation of the gas solubility between the pure component absorption versus the binary absorption, as well as the solubility selectivity, highlight the importance of the relative affinity of gas species within a mixture to the different anions. Further, the absorption selectivity within a specific IL system can be predicted based on the relative gas affinity to the anion.

CO 2 Hydrogenation to Formate and Formic Acid by Bimetallic Palladium–Copper Hydride Clusters

Mass spectrometric analysis of the anionic products of interaction between bimetallic palladium-copper tetrahydride anions, PdCuH 4 – , and carbon dioxide, CO 2 , in a reaction cell shows an efficient generation of the PdCuCO 2 H 4 – intermediate and formate/formic acid complexes. Multiple structures of PdCuH 4 – and PdCuCO 2 H 4 – are identified by a synergy between anion photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. The higher energy PdCuH 4 – isomer is shown to drive the catalytic hydrogenation of CO 2 , emphasizing the importance of accounting for higher energy isomers for cluster catalytic activity. In conclusion, this study represents the first example of CO 2 hydrogenation by bimetallic hydride clusters.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Optical Properties of the Barium meta -Pertechnetate Ba[TcO 4 ] 2

High-quality single crystals of the colorless title compound Ba[ 99 TcO 4 ] 2 were prepared from radioactive, isotope-pure 99 TcO 2 by oxidation with H 2 O 2 in an aqueous ammonia solution and subsequent cation metathesis using an ion-exchange column. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed Ba[TcO 4 ] 2 to crystallize isotopically to Ba[MnO 4 ] 2 in the orthorhombic space group Fddd with the lattice parameters a = 747.34(5) pm, b = 1244.08(7) pm, and c = 1511.23(9) pm for Z = 8. Its crystal structure features [BaO 12 ] 22- icosahedra surrounded by ten [TcO 4 ] - tetrahedra connected via two edges and eight corners. The optical properties of Ba[TcO 4 ] 2 investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy show the broad O 2- → Tc 7+ ligand-to-metal charge transfer (2p → 4d) process within these discrete [TcO 4 ]- anions at an absorption maximum of around 350 nm.

Selective Binding and Light-Driven Release of Fluorous PF 6 – and Radioactive 99 TcO 4 – Anions for All-to-Nothing Liquid–Liquid Extraction

The removal of anions from aqueous media using molecular receptors in liquid–liquid extraction is a long-standing strategy to clean up contaminated water sources. Therein, high selectivity is needed to remove specific ions from mixtures of other ions, and high affinity provides extractions at low concentrations. However, the high affinity creates a conundrum by impeding the release of the ions in any stripping steps needed for further processing. To circumvent this problem, light-responsive receptors have been proposed as candidates for turning off the binding, but they are currently untested in liquid–liquid extraction. We tested the feasibility of light-driven release using a cyanostar macrocycle. We demonstrate the selective extraction of PF$^{–}_{6}$ anions over large excesses of competing anions (Cl – , NO$^{–}_{3}$, SO$^{2–}_{4}$) followed by photodriven release for quantitative isolation of the target. Release relies on photoisomerization of the macrocycle’s five stilbenes generating distorted isomers to turn off binding. With modest reversibility, only a single-shot release was demonstrated, akin to photodriven uncaging. These methods were extended to the capture and photodriven release of ReO$^{–}_{4}$ and radioactive 99 TcO$^{–}_{4}$ anions at ∼90% efficiency. Extraction was demonstrated down to the highly dilute 4 ppb levels of the 99 TcO$^{–}_{4}$ anion. Furthermore, this proof-of-concept demonstration verifies the use of a large change in affinity for the all-to-nothing capture and release of target anions between liquid phases.

Ion Specificity Influences on the Structure of Zwitterionic Brushes

Zwitterionic brushes have a wide range of applications, including use as lubricating surfaces and antifouling membranes. In this study, densely end-tethered poly(cysteine methacrylate) (PCysMA) brushes were synthesized using surfaceinitiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ARGET-ATRP). The structure of the PCysMA brushes was investigated using ellipsometry, X-ray reflectivity (XRR), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results of these characterization techniques were used to study the effect of SO 4 2– , Cl – , NO 3 – , Br – , and SCN – anions, divalent Ca 2+ and Ba 2+ cations, and trivalent Y 3+ cations on the structure of the PCysMA brushes. The results showed that the PCysMA brushes in solution exhibit an “antipolyelectrolyte” effect to a certain degree, which inversely follows the Hofmeister series of anions. The introduction of divalent cations Ca 2+ and Ba 2+ had a modest impact on the dimensions of the PCysMA brushes, indicating that chelating interactions between the cations and zwitterion units work against the “antipolyelectrolyte” effect. The complexation was even stronger in the presence of trivalent Y 3+ cations, which caused the PCysMA brushes to shrink. These findings highlight the importance of ion specificity to the structure of zwitterionic brushes in aqueous solutions.
