Impedances of nickel electrodes cycled in various KOH concentrations

Recent tests at Hughes have shown that Ni/H2 cells cycled in 26 percent KOH have much longer lives than those cycled in other concentrations. As part of an ongoing program to try to correlate the impedances of nickel electrodes with their life and performance, impedances were measured of a number of electrodes from these tests that had been cycled in concentrations from 21 to 36 percent KOH. These had ranged from about 1000 to 40,000 cycles. After cycling ten times to reduce possible changes due to storage, impedances were measured at five voltages corresponding to low states of charge. The results were analyzed using a standard circuit model including Warburg impedance term. Lower kinetic resistances and Warburg slopes were found for several electrodes which had been cycled in 26 percent KOH even though they had been cycled for a much longer time than the others. Interpretation of the data is complicated by the fact that the cycle lives, storage times, and failure mechanisms varied. Several other circuit models have also been examined, but the best correlations with life were found with parameters obtained from the simple model.

1KW Power Transmission Using Wireless Acoustic-Electric Feed-Through (WAEF)

A variety of space applications require the delivery of power into sealed structures. Since the structural integrity can be degraded by holes for cabling we present an alternative method of delivering power and information using stress waves to the internal space of a sealed structure. One particular application of this technology is in sample return missions where it is critical to preserve the sample integrity and to prevent earth contamination. Therefore, the container has to be hermetically sealed and the integrity of the seal must be monitored in order to insure to a high degree of reliability the integrity of the sample return vessel. In this study we investigated the use of piezoelectric acoustic-electric power feed-through devices to transfer electric power wirelessly through a solid wall by using elastic or acoustic waves. The technology is applicable to a range of space and terrestrial applications where power is required by electronic equipment inside sealed containers, vacuum or pressure vessels, etc., where holes in the wall are prohibitive or may result in significant structural performance degradation or unnecessarily complex designs. To meet requirements of higher power applications, the feasibility to transfer kilowatts level power was investigated. Pre-stressed longitudinal piezoelectric feed-through devices were analyzed by finite element models and an equivalent circuit model was developed to predict the power transfer characteristics to different electric loads. Based on the results of the analysis a prototype device was designed, fabricated and a demonstration of the transmission of electric power up to 1.068-kW was successfully conducted. Efficiencies in the 80-90% range were also demonstrated and methods to increase the efficiency further are currently being considered.

Design of a Mode Conversion Ultrasonic Motor for Position Control

The many useful characteristics of ultrasonic motors, such as high holding torques, and high torque at low speeds, have made them the subject of increasing interest. In addition, several of their characteristics make them attractive for aerospace applications: they have a torque to weight ratio, and they require neither gearing mechanisms nor lubrication. Moreover, they create negligible magnetic fields, and conversely, they are not affected by external magnetic fields. Ultrasonic motors based on bolt-tightened structures offer simplicity and high stress capability. They use the inverse piezoelectric effect in the stator to produce vibrational energy, which is transferred to the rotor by friction. We designed a bolt-tightened ultrasonic motor using numerical modelling tools (finite element and electromechanical circuit analyses), creating an equivalent circuit model that takes into account the electromechanical energy conversion in the stator and the contact between the stator and the rotor. Analysis of the circuit gives insight into the behavior of the motor and allows its performance to be calculated. Two prototypes of the motor were built; their transient responses and other quantities, such as starting torque, were measured. In this paper, we discuss the numerical and the experimental results, and demonstrate the usefulness of numerical analysis in designing ultrasonic motors and estimating their performance.

Experimental investigations on channelized coplanar waveguide

A new variant of coplanar waveguide (CPW) which was termed channelized coplanar waveguide (CCPW) is presented. Measured propagation characteristics for CCPW such as epsilon(eff) and unloaded Q as a function of geometrical parameters and frequency are presented. The measured and modeled epsilon(eff) are also compared. Equivalent circuit model element values are presented for a CCPW open circuit and a CCPW right angle bend. A CCPW matched T-junction, matched 1:3 junction, and a novel coax-to-CCPW in-phase, N-way, radial power divider are also demonstrated.

Flight Metal Plasma Thruster (MPT) Development, Qualification, and Thrust Measurement Campaign

A torsional thrust stand, calibrated for impulse bits in the range of 0.1mNs -0.5 mNs, was used to measure impulse bits during two campaigns at the NASA/GRC VF-3 Vacuum test Facility. Metal Plasma Thrusters (MPTs) with targets of Molybdenum, Copper and Stainless Steel (as used in upper stages of launch vehicles that are abandoned in LEO) were tested. This paper describes data from Mo targets (called pucks). The Cu and ss data will be presented elsewhere. Model predictions (based on a simple circuit model and published plasma parameters) were validated by data from the calibrated torsional thrust stand. The Metal Plasma Thruster uses solid metal propellant, hence requires no liquids, gases, flow valves or flow controls and has no moving parts. Total impulse ~5000Ns/U provides orbit raising and drag compensation capability.

Delay analysis of combinations of pass transistors and classical logic gates

Combinations of pass transistors and logic gates driving nonlinear capacitive loads are analyzed for the presence of characteristics that will permit easier and more accurate digital logic simulation. Accurate time delay models are developed by studying the nature of the response of simplified circuit models to variations of input waveform rise and fall times and output loading. The nonlinear effects of the CMOS logic devices are minimized to permit easier interpretation of the influence of nonlinear capacitive loads. The performance of a CMOS inverter with a complex nonlinear load consisting of a pass transistor that separates a range of capacitances is compared to the same inverter circuit with a linear capacitive load to develop an understanding of the unique requirements of modeling a nonlinear system. Several methods of modeling the delay of CMOS circuits are reviewed, and a multi-parameter linear model is described. General guidelines for designing CMOS circuits with complex load circuits are developed, emphasizing that the circuit output rise delays and fall delays must be separately analyzed.

Rotary Motors Actuated by Traveling Ultrasonic Flexural Waves

Efficient miniature actuators that are compact and consume low power are needed to drive space and planetary mechanisms in future NASA missions. Ultrasonic rotary motors have the potential to meet this NASA need and they are developed as actuators for miniature telerobotic applications. These motors have emerged in commercial products but they need to be adapted for operation at the harsh space environments that include cryogenic temperatures and vacuum and also require effective analytical tools for the design of efficient motors. A finite element analytical model was developed to examine the excitation of flexural plate wave traveling in a piezoelectrically actuated rotary motor. The model uses 3D finite element and equivalent circuit models that are applied to predict the excitation frequency and modal response of the stator. This model incorporates the details of the stator including the teeth, piezoelectric ceramic, geometry, bonding layer, etc. The theoretical predictions were corroborated experimentally for the stator. In parallel, efforts have been made to determine the thermal and vacuum performance of these motors. Experiments have shown that the motor can sustain at least 230 temperature cycles from 0 C to -90 C at 7 Torr pressure significant performance change. Also, in an earlier study the motor lasted over 334 hours at -150 C and vacuum. To explore telerobotic applications for USMs a robotic arm was constructed with such motors.

Lessons learned studying design issues for lunar and Mars settlements

In a study of lunar and Mars settlement concepts, an analysis was made of fundamental design assumptions in five technical areas against a model list of occupational and environmental health concerns. The technical areas included the proposed science projects to be supported, habitat and construction issues, closed ecosystem issues, the "MMM" issues (mining, material processing, and manufacturing), and the human elements of physiology, behavior, and mission approach. Four major lessons were learned. First it is possible to relate public health concerns to complex technological development in a proactive design mode, which has the potential for long-term cost savings. Second, it became very apparent that prior to committing any nation or international group to spending the billions to start and complete a lunar settlement, over the next century, that a significantly different approach must be taken from those previously proposed, to solve the closed ecosystem and "MMM" problems. Third, it also appears that the health concerns and technology issues to be addressed for human exploration into space are fundamentally those to be solved for human habitation of the Earth (as a closed ecosystem) in the 21st century. Finally, it is proposed that ecosystem design modeling must develop new tools, based on probabilistic models as a step up from closed circuit models.

Experimentally determined factors influencing electrical coupling mechanisms

Measurements of the time-dependent electric field in the stratosphere and mesosphere above a thunderstorm have made it possible to construct an equivalent circuit model of a thunderstorm involving capacitive as well as resistive elements. The model illustrates how charge is coupled to the global circuit and how the circuit can be modulated. The average current from the thunderstorm cell to the global circuit is largely controlled by the rate of cloud-to-earth flashes, which can be affected in marginal cases by external influences. The combined effect of the earth's magnetic field and the extreme nonuniformity of mesospheric conductivity cause a large fraction of the current from nighttime thunderstorm to flow downward through the mesosphere in high-latitude regions, thus facilitating coupling between thunderstorms and high-latitude phenomena.

Predicting performance of power converters operating with switching frequencies in the vicinity of 100 kHZ

A model describing the turning-on period of a power switching transistor in an energy storage voltage step-up converter is presented. Comparisons between an experimental layout and the circuit model during the turning-on interval demonstrate the ability of the model to closely predict the effects of circuit topology on the performance of the converter. A phenomenon of particular importance that is observed in the experimental circuits and is predicted by the model is the deleterious feedback effect of the parasitic emitter lead inductance on the base current waveform during the turning-on interval.
