Transient plasma-detachment events induced by multiple gas puffs in ADITYA-U tokamak

Application of periodic short bursts of gas leads to periodic separation of the plasma column edge from the limiter in the Ohmically heated discharges of ADITYA-U tokamak. After every gas-puff, injecting around 10 17 –10 18 m −3 molecules of fuel gas in the edge of the plasma column, a significant reduction in plasma density, temperature, H α emission intensity and an increase in the H β /H α ratio is observed in the vicinity of the limiter radius for a certain time duration before these parameters regain their pre-gas puff values. A decline in the ion-flux to the limiter is also observed simultaneously. The global confinement of plasma also increases after each gas-puff. These observations, which repeat after each gas-injection, imply that the plasma–neutral interaction occurs further away from the limiters after the gas-injection and indicate a periodic plasma separation from the limiter surface. Further investigation revealed that the gas-injection modifies the radial and toroidal electric field, which may be playing a role in the separation of the plasma column from the limiter surface. It was further demonstrated by an electrode bias experiment in the absence of gas-injection that an application of an external radial electric field can result in obtaining a separated plasma state.

Sequential Separation of Linear, Mono–, and Di–Branched Hexane Isomers on a Robust Coordination Polymer with Nonbonding Flexibility

Efficient separation of hexane isomers is a crucial process for upgrading gasoline. Herein, the sequential separation of linear, mono-, and di-branched hexane isomers by a robust stacked 1D coordination polymer termed as Mn-dhbq ([Mn(dhbq)(H 2 O) 2 ], H 2 dhbq = 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone) is reported. The interchain space of the activated polymer is of optimal aperture size (5.58 Å) that could exclude 2,3-dimethylbutane, while the chain structure can discriminate n-hexane with high capacity (1.53 mmol g –1 at 393 K, 6.67 kPa) by high-density open metal sites (5.18 mmol g –1 ). With the temperature- and adsorbate-dependent swelling of interchain spaces, the affinity between 3-methylpentane and Mn-dhbq can be deliberately controlled from sorption to exclusion, and thus a complete separation of ternary mixture can be achieved. Column breakthrough experiments confirm the excellent separation performance of Mn-dhbq. Furthermore, the ultrahigh stability and easy scalability further highlight the application prospect of Mn-dhbq for separation of hexane isomers.

A U.S. Scientific Community Vision for Sustained Earth Observations of Greenhouse Gases to Support Local to Global Action

Managing carbon stocks in the land, ocean, and atmosphere under changing climate requires a globally‐integrated view of carbon cycle processes at local and regional scales. The growing Earth Observation (EO) record is the backbone of this multi‐scale system, providing local information with discrete coverage from surface measurements and regional information at global scale from satellites. Carbon flux information, anchored by inverse estimates from spaceborne Greenhouse Gas (GHG) concentrations, provides an important top‐down view of carbon emissions and sinks, but currently lacks global continuity at assessment and management scales (<100 km). Partial‐column data can help separate signals in the boundary layer from the overlying atmosphere, providing an opportunity to enhance surface sensitivity and bring flux resolution down from that of column‐integrated data (100–500 km). Based on a workshop held in September 2024, the carbon cycle community envisions a carbon observation system leveraging GHG partial columns in the lower and upper troposphere to weave together information across scales from surface and satellite EO data, and integration of top‐down/bottom‐up analyses to link process understanding to global assessment.

Scaling Trivalent Actinide and Lanthanide Recovery by Diglycolamide Resin from Savannah River Site’s Mark-18A Targets

The Savannah River National Laboratory is implementing a separation flowsheet to recover rare isotopes and transplutonium elements from irradiated 242 Pu targets known as Mark-18A targets. The Mark-18A targets contain the United States’ supply of nonseparated 244 Pu, which has a wide range of applications from nuclear forensics to production of superheavy elements such as flerovium. The targets also contain hundreds of grams of heavy curium ( 246–248 Cm), which is used as a target material for 252 Cf production. This work investigates the use of diglycolomide resin (DGA Resin) to recover valuable trivalent actinides from the Mark-18A targets. Batch contact experiments were performed on a representative simulant to determine mass loadings. Furthermore, the resin showed an overall capacity of 11 mg/mL for a mixed metal matrix (Zr and La–Gd). Column experiments showed chromatographic separation with transition-metal breakthroughs occurring first followed by the lanthanide series La–Gd. The experiments showed that lanthanide breakthrough occurred after 11 mg/mL mass loading was reached on the column with the mixed metal matrix. A radiological column experiment with an in-line UV/vis cell was able to detect Nd breakthrough just prior to 241 Am breakthrough. Implementing an in-line UV/vis cell into full-scale Mark-18A target processing will be used to limit breakthrough of trivalent actinides recovered from the targets.

Tritium cleanup system and method

Work area cleanup systems and methods are described for removing tritium from the atmosphere of a work area such as inert gas gloveboxes. Systems utilize a multi-column approach with parallel processing. Tritium of a tritium-contaminated stream is converted into tritiated water and adsorbed onto the separation phase of a first column as a second, parallel column can be simultaneously regenerated. The gaseous stream that exits the column during the regeneration phase can carry a high tritium concentration. The system can also include and a separation stage during which the tritium of the gaseous regeneration stream can be separated from the remainder of the regeneration product.

Cation exchange separation of radium and actinium using lactic acid DTPA buffer

The separation of actinium ( 228 Ac) from radium ( 223,228 Ra) on cation exchange resin with a diethylenetriaminpentaacetic acid-lactate buffer solution is demonstrated with series of columns. High yield, high radiopurity (~ 100%) separations of Ac from Ra are feasible with small columns in biologically compatible conditions and pHs. As Ac is eluted before Ra on these columns, further studies were performed to determine if this separation system could be applied to Ra/Ac isotope generators, but these were not successful. In conclusion, the separations presented in this work may be relevant for radiopharmaceutical purifications of 225 Ac which is typically obtained from its 225 Ra parent isotope.

A fast and sensitive size-exclusion chromatography method for plasma extracellular vesicle proteomic analysis

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) carry diverse biomolecules derived from their parental cells, making their components excellent biomarker candidates. However, purifying EVs is a major hurdle in biomarker discovery since current methods require large amounts of samples, are time-consuming and typically have poor reproducibility. Here we describe a simple, fast, and sensitive EV fractionation method using size exclusion chromatography (SEC) on a fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) system. Our method uses a Superose 6 Increase 5/150, which has a bed volume of 2.9 mL. The FPLC system and small column size enable reproducible separation of only 50 µL of human plasma in 15 min. To demonstrate the utility of our method, we used longitudinal samples from a group of individuals who underwent intense exercise. A total of 838 proteins were identified, of which, 261 were previously characterized as EV proteins, including classical markers, such as cluster of differentiation (CD)9 and CD81. Quantitative analysis showed low technical variability with correlation coefficients greater than 0.9 between replicates. The analysis captured differences in relevant EV proteins involved in response to physical activity. Our method enables fast and sensitive fractionation of plasma EVs with low variability, which will facilitate biomarker studies in large clinical cohorts.

Data used in: "Salinity exposure affects lower-canopy specific leaf area of upland trees in a coastal deciduous forest"

We conducted an observational study of SLA in a mid-Atlantic (USA) coastal deciduous forest, taking advantage of a natural gradient in salinity along a tidal creek. Measured SLA of the 239 trees and seven species sampled ranged from Carya glabra (N = 6 trees, mean SLA = 277.9 ± 36.3 cm2 g-1) to Fagus grandifolia (N = 60, 321.9 ± 62.9 cm2 g-1). This work is in press at Forest Ecology and Management. This dataset has two files, "sla_data.csv" (the data) and "sla_metadata.txt" (the metadata). Both are plain-text files and can be read by most software such as text editors, R, Python, Excel, etc. The data file is comma-separated values with 11 columns and 239 rows of data. The metadata file has 11 rows, one for each data column, and giving a plain-text description for each column and any associated units.

Characterization of CST Post-Processing AP-105 Hanford Tank Waste

The primary goal of the Tank Side Cesium Removal (TSCR) system, under development by Washington River Protection Solutions, LLC (WRPS), is to remove entrained solids and 137 Cs from the Hanford tank waste supernate to expedite production of low-activity waste. Ion exchange (IX) testing of 10.9 L of waste from Hanford tank 241-AP-105 (AP-105), performed by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, used a lead-lag-polish column format, with a bed volume of 10 mL per column, to decontaminate tank waste supernate using crystalline silicotitanate (CST) as the IX media. The AP-105 Cs IX processing test, discussed elsewhere, resulted in a shorter transition zone (i.e., steeper load curve) than those defined by wastes from tanks 241-AP-107 and 241-AW-102.1 The shorter transition zone was indicative of a matrix effect retarding Cs capacity. Therefore, aliquots of spent CST from the lead, lag, and polish columns were subjected to a digestion protocol to quantify analytes retained by the CST and extrapolate the impact on Cs capacity. The spent CST was digested using a combination of 5 M HNO 3 and H 2 O 2 with vigorous heating and stirring. Due to the radiation dose accompanying the 137 Cs on the CST columns, a secondary Cs separation by ammonium molybdophosphate embedded in polyacrylonitrile (AMP-PAN) was performed to separate the 137 Cs from the CST so the samples could be contact-handled for analysis outside of a shielded facility.

University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Final Scientific/Technical Report Small Scale Ammonia Synthesis Using Stranded Wind Energy

Ammonia absorber columns offer an alternative separation unit to replace condensation in the Haber-Bosch synthesis loop. Metal halide salts can selectively separate ammonia from the reactor outlet gas mixture and incorporate it into their crystal lattice with remarkably high thermodynamic capacity. While the salts’ working capacity can be limited and unstable when they are in their pure form, the capacity is stable and can be high when using a porous ceramic support. In this project, we found optimal conditions for sorbent fabrication, we demonstrated benchmark levels of uptake and release of ammonia, and we fabricated and demonstrated a prototype at a scale of 1 kg/day ammonia. This task allowed us to assess improvement in the techno-economic prospects for this new separation approach, making viable more distributed production of green ammonia from geographically dispersed renewable energy sources.

A generalized distillation network synthesis model

In this report we propose a generalized superstructure-based distillation network synthesis model with improved modeling capabilities resulting in an extended solution space. The model can assign multiple mixtures to be separated (e.g., reactor network effluents) to different columns of the network while considering the interactions among different separation steps. In terms of outlets, products with general specifications, including pure components and multi-component mixtures, as well as streams without strict specifications (e.g., reactor recycle streams) can be readily handled. Furthermore, stream bypass is considered to avoid unnecessary separations, and thermal coupling is considered to yield novel solutions. The proposed model enables seamless integration with reactor network synthesis models thereby leading to solutions that are superior to the ones obtained by conventional sequential approaches.

Flexible Zn-MOF with Rare Underlying scu Topology for Effective Separation of C6 Alkane Isomers

Adsorptive separation by porous solids provides an energy-efficient alternative for the purification of important chemical species compared to energy-intensive distillations. Particularly, the separation of linear hexane isomers from its branched counterparts is crucial to produce premium grade gasoline with high research octane number (RON). Herein, we report the synthesis of a new, flexible zinc-based metal-organic framework, [Zn 5 (μ 3 -OH) 2 (adtb) 2 (H 2 O) 5 ·5 DMA] (Zn-adtb), constructed from a butterfly shaped carboxylate linker with underlying (4,8)-connected scu topology capable of separating the C6 isomers nHEX, 3MP, and 23DMB. The sorbate-sorbent interactions and separation mechanisms were investigated and analyzed through in situ FTIR, solid state NMR measurements and computational modeling. Here these studies reveal that Zn-adtb discriminates the nHEX/3MP isomer pair through a kinetic separation mechanism and the nHEX/23DMB isomer pair through a molecular sieving mechanism. Column breakthrough measurements further demonstrate the efficient separation of linear nHEX from the mono- and dibranched isomers.

Production, isolation, and shipment of clinically relevant quantities of astatine-211: A simple and efficient approach to increasing supply

The alpha emitter astatine-211 ( 211 At) is a promising candidate for cancer treatment based on Targeted Alpha (α) Therapy (TAT). A small number of facilities, distributed across the United States, are capable of accelerating α-particle beams to produce 211 At. However, challenges remain regarding strategic methods for shipping 211 At in a form adaptable to advanced radiochemistry reactions and other uses of the radioisotope. Purpose: Our method allows shipment of 211 At in various quantities in a form convenient for further radiochemistry. Procedures: For this study, a 3-octanone impregnated Amberchrom® CG300M resin bed in a column cartridge was used to separate 211 At from the bismuth matrix on site at the production accelerator (Texas A&M) in preparation for shipping. Aliquots of 6 M HNO 3 containing up to ≈2.22 GBq of 211 At from the dissolved target were successfully loaded and retained on columns. Exempt packages (<370 MBq) were shipped to a destination radiochemistry facility, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, in the form of a convenient air-dried column. Type A packages have been shipped overnight to University of Alabama at Birmingham. Main findings: Air-dried column hold times of various lengths did not inhibit simple and efficient recovery of 211 At. Solution eluted from the column was sufficiently high in specific activity to successfully radiolabel a model compound, 4-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)aniline (1), with 211 At. The method to prepare and ship 211 At described in this manuscript has also been used to ship larger quantities of 211 At a greater distance to University of Alabama at Birmingham. Principal conclusions: The successful proof of this method paves the way for the distribution of 211 At from Texas A&M University to research institutions and clinical oncology centers in Texas and elsewhere. Finally, use of this simple method at other facilities has the potential increase the overall availability of 211 At for preclinical and clinical studies.

OC6 Phase Ib: Validation of the CFD predictions of difference-frequency wave excitation on a FOWT semisubmersible

During the previous OC5 11 project, state-of-the-art mid-fidelity engineering tools for floating wind systems were found to consistently underpredict the nonlinear, low-frequency responses of semisubmersible offshore wind platforms, leading to substantial errors in the structural loads because of low-frequency surge and pitch resonance. To examine this underprediction, a coordinated investigation with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and model-basin experiments was carried out. Both investigations involved a fixed and simplified OC5-DeepCwind semisubmersible in bichromatic waves. The wave excitations - especially the nonlinear, difference-frequency excitation - on the structure from the CFD simulations were compared to the experimental measurements for validation, with uncertainty analyses for both the experimental and the CFD results. Furthermore, the wave excitations on each column of the semisubmersible were measured separately in the experiment, allowing the validation of the CFD results to be done on a per-column basis. Overall, the CFD predictions of the difference-frequency excitations agree with the experimental measurements, suggesting the CFD solutions can be used as a reference for tuning and improving the engineering-level tools and can provide a means to better understand the underprediction at low frequencies.

Rapid and automated separation of uranium ore concentrates for trace element analysis by inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectroscopy/triple quadrupole mass spectrometry

The present study documents an automated approach to performing elemental analysis on a large group uranium ore concentrate (UOC) samples. In this work, 17 UOC samples, 2 quality control samples, and 26 process blanks were purified sequentially through a single 500 μL Uranium and TEtra Valent Actinides (UTEVA®) column. For each sample, the trace elemental impurities were separated from its dissolved uranium matrix on the UTEVA column and collected for analysis by inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectroscopy / triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (ICP-OES/TQMS). The UTEVA column was subsequently regenerated prior to separation of the following sample. The column was efficiently regenerated, for each UOC, even after processing ~50 mg of uranium, cumulatively. The validity of the method was established by determining the trace impurities of two quality control uranium reference samples (CRM 124–1 and CUP-2). The current trace element measurements from the 17 UOC samples were compared to previously reported values from an interlaboratory comparison exercise, when available. The methodology employed here produces trace elemental analysis with excellent correlation to the previously reported data for many of the elements / samples, particularly when viewed through the context of existing geochemical comparisons tools (e.g. chondrite normalized variation plots).
