Optoelectronic polymer memristors with dynamic control for power-efficient in-sensor edge computing

Abstract As the demand for edge platforms in artificial intelligence increases, including mobile devices and security applications, the surge in data influx into edge devices often triggers interference and suboptimal decision-making. There is a pressing need for solutions emphasizing low power consumption and cost-effectiveness. In-sensor computing systems employing memristors face challenges in optimizing energy efficiency and streamlining manufacturing due to the necessity for multiple physical processing components. Here, we introduce low-power organic optoelectronic memristors with synergistic optical and mV-level electrical tunable operation for a dynamic “control-on-demand” architecture. Integrating signal sensing, featuring, and processing within the same memristors enables the realization of each in-sensor analogue reservoir computing module, and minimizes circuit integration complexity. The system achieves 97.15% fingerprint recognition accuracy while maintaining a minimal reservoir size and ultra-low energy consumption. Furthermore, we leverage wafer-scale solution techniques and flexible substrates for optimal memristor fabrication. By centralizing core functionalities on the same in-sensor platform, we propose a resilient and adaptable framework for energy-efficient and economical edge computing.

Machine Learning for Predicting Multipactor Susceptibility in Planar RF Structures

Multipactor discharge is a persistent challenge in high-power microwave (HPM) and accelerator systems, where secondary electron avalanches can cause heating, vacuum degradation, and failure. This work presents the first supervised machine learning (ML) framework for multipactor prediction, trained on high-fidelity 3D Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulation data in planar geometries. The model maps operational, geometric, and material-dependent secondary electron yield (SEY) parameters to the time-averaged electron growth rate, enabling rapid reconstruction of susceptibility charts. Among the models evaluated, tree-based ensemble methods such as Random Forest and Extra Trees demonstrate superior generalization to unseen materials compared to neural networks such as multilayer perceptron (MLP). Performance metrics, including Intersection over Union (IoU), Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM), and Pearson correlation, show close agreement with simulation benchmarks. Principal Component Analysis attributes generalization limits to material feature-space disjointedness.

Feasibility of Nitrogen as a Carrier Gas for Inconel Cold Spray in Hydropower Application

Cold spray deposition of Inconel nickel alloys has emerged as a promising strategy for mitigating cavitation erosion in hydropower facilities. Most prior developments employ helium (He) as the carrier gas because it enables high particle velocities and the formation of dense coatings. However, He is nearly two orders of magnitude more expensive than nitrogen (N2), which limits its widespread adoption in the hydropower sector. Although He-based cold spray can be justified for high value repairs, the lower cost and broad availability of N2 make it an attractive alternative. This study assesses the feasibility of N2-based cold spray of Inconel 625 powders for hydropower applications. Cavitation erosion testing shows that He-based coating exhibits cavitation resistance of ~398% relative to the 304L stainless steel (SS304L) substrate. In contrast, N2-based coating shows substantially lower cavitation resistance, reaching only ~69% of the SS304L substrate, even when higher carrier gas temperature and pressure are applied. When the Inconel 625 powder size is reduced from 44 to 22 µm under N2-based cold spray conditions, cavitation resistance increases significantly to ~148% of the SS304L substrate. Additional improvement can be obtained by incorporating fine chromium carbide powders into the feedstock, resulting in cavitation resistance of ~172% of the SS304L substrate. Overall, with optimized feedstock design, N2-based cold spray offers a practical and cost-effective approach for producing cavitation resistant coatings on hydropower components, although He-based cold spray continues to deliver higher cavitation resistance.

Spinel high-entropy oxides (FeNiCrMnZnX) 3 O 4 (X = Al, mg) as anode materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

To address the high cost, cobalt dependency, and resource constraints typical of conventional high-entropy oxide (HEO) anodes, this study reports the successful synthesis of two Co-free, six-component spinel-type HEOs(FeNiCrMnZnAl) 3 O 4 (HEO-Al) and (FeNiCrMnZnMg) 3 O 4 (HEO-Mg), via a sol-gel method. The distinct effects of Al 3+ and Mg 2+ incorporation on the electrochemical performance and lithium storage kinetics were systematically investigated. XRD, Raman, and TEM characterizations confirm that both materials possess a pure spinel phase, uniform particle size, and homogeneous elemental distribution. Notably, electrochemical evaluations reveal that HEO-Al delivers a superior reversible capacity of 480.7 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 , and maintains 354.5 mAh g −1 after 1000 long-term cycles at 1 A g −1 , significantly outperforming HEO-Mg. Kinetic analysis indicates that HEO-Al exhibits lower charge transfer resistance, a higher Li + diffusion coefficient, and a pseudocapacitive contribution of up to 82%. Furthermore, these findings demonstrate that Al substitution effectively optimizes the structural stability and lithium storage kinetics of Co-free HEOs, providing a viable strategy for designing low-cost, highly stable HEO anode systems.

Temperature as a control knob on spin-orbit coupling

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) governs many physical phenomena. Through ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, Lu and Sun demonstrated that structural disorder at elevated temperatures substantially reduces the effective SOC contribution that stabilizes band inversion, driving a topological-to-normal-insulator transition in Bi2Se3. Their work identifies temperature as a meaningful control parameter for SOC-mediated topology and other properties.

Large Scale Granulator Development Designed to Process Reclaimed Feedstock for Sustainable Additive Manufacturing Applications

This CRADA between UT-Battelle, LLC (Contractor) and re:3D Inc. (Participant) aims to develop an affordable large-scale granulator system designed to process reclaimed plastic feedstock suitable for additive manufacturing applications. The 24-month project will focus on testing, prototyping, and optimizing a shredder/granulator system. This project also focuses on the processing steps (e.g. washing and sorting) that can convert waste plastics, like discarded water bottles, into flake/granules which can be 3D printed using re:3D’s Fused Granular Fabrication (FGF) 3D printers. If successful, this could enable more localized 3D printing using recycled plastics, reducing waste and feedstock costs.

A holistic platform for accelerating sorbent-based carbon capture

Abstract Reducing carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions urgently requires the large-scale deployment of carbon-capture technologies. These technologies must separate CO 2 from various sources and deliver it to different sinks 1,2 . The quest for optimal solutions for specific source–sink pairs is a complex, multi-objective challenge involving multiple stakeholders and depends on social, economic and regional contexts. Currently, research follows a sequential approach: chemists focus on materials design 3 and engineers on optimizing processes 4,5 , which are then operated at a scale that impacts the economy and the environment. Assessing these impacts, such as the greenhouse gas emissions over the plant’s lifetime, is typically one of the final steps 6 . Here we introduce the PrISMa (Process-Informed design of tailor-made Sorbent Materials) platform, which integrates materials, process design, techno-economics and life-cycle assessment. We compare more than 60 case studies capturing CO 2 from various sources in 5 global regions using different technologies. The platform simultaneously informs various stakeholders about the cost-effectiveness of technologies, process configurations and locations, reveals the molecular characteristics of the top-performing sorbents, and provides insights on environmental impacts, co-benefits and trade-offs. By uniting stakeholders at an early research stage, PrISMa accelerates carbon-capture technology development during this critical period as we aim for a net-zero world.

Accessing bands with extended quantum metric in kagome Cs 2 Ni 3 S 4 through soft chemical processing

Flat bands that do not merely arise from weak interactions can produce exotic physical properties, such as superconductivity or correlated many-body effects. The quantum metric can differentiate whether flat bands will result in correlated physics or are merely dangling bonds. A potential avenue for achieving correlated flat bands involves leveraging geometrical constraints within specific lattice structures, such as the kagome lattice; however, materials are often more complex. In these cases, quantum geometry becomes a powerful indicator of the nature of bands with small dispersions. We present a simple, soft-chemical processing route to access a flat band with an extended quantum metric below the Fermi level. By oxidizing Ni-kagome material Cs 2 Ni 3 S 4 to CsNi 3 S 4 , we see a two orders of magnitude drop in the room temperature resistance. However, CsNi 3 S 4 is still insulating, with no evidence of a phase transition. Using experimental data, density functional theory calculations, and symmetry analysis, our results suggest the emergence of a correlated insulating state of unknown origin.
