Grid-forming Control of Single- and Two-Stage Solar PV Systems with Mode Transition

Legacy power systems once dominated by con-ventional synchronous machines are transitioning into systems driven by fast-acting power-electronic converters that integrate renewable resources. The majority of integrated renewables such as PV and wind bring down system inertia and can cause stability issues due to their volatile nature. The state-of-the-art grid-forming (GFM) control is proven to enhance system inertia and stability in low-inertia systems. However, most of the existing GFM inverters are applied for battery systems, which are much more expensive than PV. Motivated by this, in this paper we propose a holistic grid-forming (GFM) control strategy for PV systems without the need of energy storage. The proposed strategy is developed on the secondary level of the grid-forming control that enables the PV inverter to operate smoothly among islanded, synchronization, GFM, and limited grid-forming (LGF) modes. The practical criteria for determining the operation modes are established and implemented based on the grid operation scenarios. Here, the proposed design is successfully validated by case studies with a laboratory prototype using Siemens Software Defined Inverters.

Studies in pulse shape discrimination for an optimized ASIC design

The continued advancements of Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) have made them viable photosensors for low recoil energy Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD) between fast neutron and gamma interactions when coupled to an appropriate scintillator. At the same time, the large number of channels in a typical array calls for the development of low-cost and low-power electronics. A custom integrated circuit (ASIC) is an ideal solution for this purpose. To assess the requirements for such an ASIC, studies were performed using two scintillators, Stilbene and EJ-276, coupled to a 6 x 6 mm SiPM from Onsemi. We demonstrate that both scintillators are viable for performing PSD for interaction energies from 100 keV to several MeV while optimizing the integration periods used in the PSD metric. These measurements inform the design parameters of the ASIC under development.

Modular Standards for Space Power Systems

This presentation presents an approach to provide commonality for future space power systems through a set of modular power standards. The approach presented breaks down the electrical power conversion and distribution system into the lowest level functions, which are represented by power electronics modules, and serve as the foundational building blocks of the system. A series of Modular Power Standards has been developed to define the functions and interfaces of the lowest level of the electrical power system, or for each type of power electronics module. The power electronics modules, when integrated with a common chassis and backplane, can then be built up into modular electronics assemblies, which have been demonstrated and characterized in a relevant ground test environment.

Background Information on the Power Quality Requirements in IEEE Std 1547-2018

The revised Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1547-2018, Standard for Interconnection and Interoperability of Distributed Energy Resources with Associated Electric Power Systems Interfaces, was published in April 2018. This standard is one of the foundational documents in the United States needed for integrating distributed energy resources (DERs), including solar energy systems, and energy storage systems with the electric distribution grid. The revised standard contains 11 chapters (clauses) and 8 annexes that comprise 136 pages. The revision is significantly different from the 2003 version, and it contains new concepts and new technical requirements. Each clause specifies information or requirements that apply to certain aspects that are important to the interconnection of DERs to the electric power system. Implementing the requirements necessitates a careful study of the underlying technical concepts and requires appropriate information to calculate relevant settings and configurations. This document provides informative material on the requirements related to electrical power quality in IEEE Std 1547-2018, with the intent to equip the reader with basic knowledge and background information to improve understanding and use of the requirements specified.

Integrated Multiport Conductive and Wireless Architecture for Electric Vehicle Charging

This paper explores the opportunity of integrating conductive and wireless electric vehicle charging architectures and presents an integrated multiport charging architecture suitable for simultaneous conductive and wireless charging of electric vehicles. The architecture successfully integrates the primary side power electronic high frequency inverter and the high frequency transformer with the wireless transmitter and receiver to achieve independent power flow at each port. Design of the integrated magnetics is discussed, and results are presented that demonstrate the decoupled power flow at each port. The proposed integrated architecture increases the utilization of the same charging infrastructure without a proportionate increase in the cost.

The Space Technology 5 Avionics System

The Space Technology 5 (ST5) mission is a NASA New Millennium Program project that will validate new technologies for future space science missions and demonstrate the feasibility of building launching and operating multiple, miniature spacecraft that can collect research-quality in-situ science measurements. The three satellites in the ST5 constellation will be launched into a sun-synchronous Earth orbit in early 2006. ST5 fits into the 25-kilogram and 24-watt class of very small but fully capable spacecraft. The new technologies and design concepts for a compact power and command and data handling (C&DH) avionics system are presented. The 2-card ST5 avionics design incorporates new technology components while being tightly constrained in mass, power and volume. In order to hold down the mass and volume, and quali& new technologies for fUture use in space, high efficiency triple-junction solar cells and a lithium-ion battery were baselined into the power system design. The flight computer is co-located with the power system electronics in an integral spacecraft structural enclosure called the card cage assembly. The flight computer has a full set of uplink, downlink and solid-state recording capabilities, and it implements a new CMOS Ultra-Low Power Radiation Tolerant logic technology. There were a number of challenges imposed by the ST5 mission. Specifically, designing a micro-sat class spacecraft demanded that minimizing mass, volume and power dissipation would drive the overall design. The result is a very streamlined approach, while striving to maintain a high level of capability, The mission's radiation requirements, along with the low voltage DC power distribution, limited the selection of analog parts that can operate within these constraints. The challenge of qualifying new technology components for the space environment within a short development schedule was another hurdle. The mission requirements also demanded magnetic cleanliness in order to reduce the effect of stray (spacecraft-generated) magnetic fields on the science-grade magnetometer.

Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System for Cyber-Intrusion Detection in a Smart Grid

The evolution of the power grid has brought increasing deployment of advance metering infrastructure, penetration of intelligent electronic devices, and integration of physical power system components with information and communications technologies. With the fast-expanding connectivity, cyber vulnerabilities arise due to the use of internet-based communication systems. These systems are targets of cyber-intrusions which attempt to disturb the normal power system functions. Traditional intrusion detection algorithms have been developed without an explicit model of the cyber components. In this paper, an algorithm to detect false data injections in the power system is proposed considering both cyber and physical models of the power system. The algorithm is based on an Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) which collects information from state variables of the cyber-physical system to meet the performance requirements of the grid. Simulations of the proposed approach using the IEEE 13-bus test system validate the effectiveness of this artificial intelligence-based algorithm.
