A new-speckle interferometry system for the MAMA detector

We have developed a new system for making speckle observations with the multianode microchannel array (MAMA) detector. This system is a true photon-counting imaging device which records the arrival time of every detected photon and allows for reconstruction of image features near the diffraction limit of the telescope. We present a description of the system and summary of observational results obtained at the Lick Observatory 1-m reflector in 1991 September. The diffraction limit of the 1-m telescope at 5029 A is about 0.125 arcsec and we have successfully resolved the catalogued interferometric binary HD 202582 with a separation of 0.157 +/- 0.031 arcsec. A pair of stars in the open cluster Chi Persei separated by 2.65 +/- 0.22 arcsec with approximate V magnitudes 8.6 and 11.5 has also been successfully analyzed with the speckle technique.

Elastic modulus measurements of LDEF glasses and glass-ceramics using a speckle technique

Elastic moduli of five glass types and the glass-ceramic Zerodur, exposed to a near-earth orbit environment on the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF), were compared to that of unexposed samples. A double exposure speckle photography technique utilizing 633 nm laser light was used in the production of the speckle pattern. Subsequent illumination of a double exposed negative using the same wavelength radiation produces Young's fringes from which the in-plane displacements are measured. Stresses imposed by compressive loading produced measurable strains in the glasses and glass-ceramic.

The application of infrared speckle interferometry to the imaging of remote galaxies and AGN

A 1.5 meter reflector, used for both infrared and optical astronomy, is also being used for infrared speckle interferometry and CCD imaging. The application of these imaging techniques to remote galaxies and active galactic nuclei are discussed. A simple model for the origin of speckle in coherent imaging systems is presented. Very careful photometry of the continuum of the galaxy M31 is underway using CCD images. It involves extremely intensive data reduction because the object itself is very large and has low surface brightness.

Improvements In A Laser-Speckle Surface-Strain Gauge

Compact optical subsystem incorporates several improvements over optical subsystems of previous versions of laser-speckle surface-strain gauge: faster acquisition of data, faster response to transients, reduced size and weight, lower cost, and less complexity. Principle of operation described previously in "Laser System Measures Two-Dimensional Strain" (LEW-15046), and "Two-Dimensional Laser-Speckle Surface-Strain Gauge" (LEW-15337).

Two-Color Laser Speckle Shift Strain Measurement System

A two color laser speckle shift strain measurement system based on the technique of Yamaguchi was designed. The dual wavelength light output from an Argon Ion laser was coupled into two separate single-mode optical fibers (patchcords). The output of the patchcords is incident on the test specimen (here a structural fiber). Strain on the fiber, in one direction, is produced using an Instron 4502. Shifting interference patterns or speckle patterns will be detected at real-time rates using 2 CCD cameras with image processing performed by a hardware correlator. Strain detected in fibers with diameters from 21 microns to 143 microns is expected to be resolved to 15 mu epsilon. This system was designed to be compact and robust and does not require surface preparation of the structural fibers.

Infrared Speckle Interferometry with 2-D Arrays

We describe results from a program of speckle interferometry with two-dimensional infrared array detectors. Analysis of observations of eta Carinae made with 58 x 62 InSb detector are discussed. The data have been analyzed with both the Labeyrie autocorrelation, a deconvolution of shift-and-add data, and a phase restoration process. Development of a new camera based on a much lower noise HgCdTe detector will lead to a significant improvement i limiting magnitude for IR speckle interferometry.

Upgrades to Electronic Speckle Interferometer (ESPI) Operation and Data Analysis at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center

The authors report operational upgrades and streamlined data analysis of a commissioned electronic speckle interferometer (ESPI) in a permanent in-house facility at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. Our ESPI was commercially purchased for use by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) development team. We have quantified and reduced systematic error sources, improved the software operability with a user-friendly graphic interface, developed an instrument simulator, streamlined data analysis for long-duration testing, and implemented a turn-key approach to speckle interferometry. We also summarize results from a test of the JWST support structure (previously published), and present new results from several pieces of test hardware at various environmental conditions.

Speckle Interferometry at Mount Wilson Observatory: Observations Obtained in 2006-2007 and 35 New Orbits

Results are presented for 607 speckle interferometric observations of double stars, as well as 222 measures of single stars or unresolved pairs. All data were obtained in 2006 and 2007 at the Mount Wilson Observatory, using the 2.5 m Hooker telescope. Separations range from 0.06 to 6.31, with a median of 0.34. These three observing runs concentrated on binaries in need of confirmation (mainly Hipparcos and Tycho pairs), as well as systems in need of improved orbital elements. New orbital solutions have been determined for 35 systems as a result.

Speckle Interferometry at the Blanco and SOAR Telescopes in 2008 and 2009

The results of speckle interferometric measurements of binary and multiple stars conducted in 2008 and 2009 at the Blanco and Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) 4 m telescopes in Chile are presented. A tot al of 1898 measurements of 1189 resolved pairs or sub-systems and 394 observations of 285 un-resolved targets are listed. We resolved for the first time 48 new pairs, 21 of which are new sub-systems in close visual multiple stars. Typical internal measurement precision is 0.3 mas in both coordinates, typical companion detection capability is delta m approximately 4.2 at 0.15 degree separation. These data were obtained with a new electron-multiplication CCD camera; data processing is described in detail, including estimation of magnitude difference, observational errors, detection limits, and analysis of artifacts. We comment on some newly discovered pairs and objects of special interest.

Radar speckle reduction in synthetic aperture radar processors by a moving diffuser

Some theoretical and experimental results are presented demonstrating the reduction of synthetic aperture radar speckle when a moving diffuser is placed in the processor image plane and is reimaged with a lens whose resolution is not better than the radar resolution. The resolution of the resulting radar image is determined by the resolution of this output lens.

Scintillation statistics caused by atmospheric turbulence and speckle in satellite laser ranging

We study the statistics of scintillation at the ground-based receiver for the earth-space-earth retroreflector configuration of satellite laser ranging. These statistics are governed by the joint effects of atmospheric turbulence and speckle produced by the retroreflector array. An expression for the probability density function of scintillation is obtained and evaluated numerically. Comparison of the normalized variance of scintillation calculated by using this function shows good agreement with results obtained by other methods.

Speckle techniques for determining stresses in moving objects

Laser speckle interferometry is a relatively new experimental technique which shows promise of alleviating many difficult problems in experimental mechanics. The method utilizes simple high-resolution photographs of the surface which is illuminated by coherent light. The result is a real-time or permanently stored whole-field record of interference fringes which yields a map of displacements in the object. In this thesis, the time-average theory using the Fourier transform is developed to present the application of this technique to measurement of in-plane displacement induced by the vibration of an object.

Detection of gratings and small features in speckle imagery

The extent of picture degradation of speckle, in particular in synthetic aperture radar pictures, has been investigated in the cases where an observer has to detect (1) a small feature immersed in a darker background, and (2) a square wave grating. In each case, a theoretical model is developed for the observer's detection mechanism, and the probability of correct decision is related to relevant picture parameters such as contrast, looks per pixel, and size. These calculations are verified by psychophysical experiments using computer-simulated pictures. Detectability of gratings as a criterion for characterizing picture quality is shown to be far inferior to feature detectability.

Discrimination of form in images corrupted by speckle

The problem investigated is that of a human observer having to distinguish between certain specified geometrical forms corrupted by speckle - an idealization of the problem of a scientist studying a synthetic aperture radar map. Specifically, the cases of two simple alternative forms and of two and four orientations of a simple form have been considered. A theoretical model is developed for the observer's decision process by analogy with optimal receiver theory, and the probability of a correct decision is related to form parameters like size, contrast, and looks. These calculations are verified by psychophysical experiments using computer-simulated pictures.

Ocean wave height measurement with SEASAT SAR using speckle diversity

Measurement of ocean wave heights with the synthetic aperture radar can be accomplished with high spatial resolution by determining the variation of speckle intensity with the frequency and angle of illumination. A comparison of data obtained by the SEASAT SAR with surface truth measurements obtained during the GOASEX and the JASIN experiments demonstrates this concept.
