Polymorphism and phase transitions in layered uranium(VI) hydroxides: Ab initio lattice dynamics simulations of UO 2 (OH) 2

The phase transitions and thermodynamics of stoichiometric α-, β-, and γ-UO 2 (OH) 2 polymorphs are investigated using density functional perturbation theory. The pressure-induced β(Pbca) → α(Cmca) phase transition is reproduced by calculations, with a volume reduction of ΔV/V = -14.7% similar to experiment. Consistent with observation, a temperature-driven γ(P2 1 /c) → β(Pbca) phase transition is predicted near 533 K. At 298.15K, the computed standard molar heat capacity of α-UO 2 (OH) 2 is C p 0 = 112.1 J mol -1 K -1 , only 1.6% smaller than the value of C p 0 = 113.96 ± 0.12 J mol -1 K -1 measured by calorimetry. C p 0 = 112.4 and 104.8 J mol -1 K -1 are predicted for the β- and γ-UO 2 (OH) 2 polymorphs, respectively. The calculated molar enthalpy and Gibbs energy functions of the α-, β-, and γ-UO 2 (OH) 2 polymorphs are also reported.

Two-pion exchange as a leading-order contribution in chiral effective field theory

Pion exchange is the central ingredient to nucleon-nucleon interactions used in nuclear structure calculations, and one-pion exchange (OPE) enters at leading order in chiral effective field theory. In the 2S+1 L J = 1 S 0 partial wave, however, OPE and a contact term needed for proper renormalization fail to produce the qualitative, and quantitative, features of the scattering phase shifts. Cutoff variation also revealed a surprisingly low breakdown momentum Λ b ≈ 330 MeV in this partial wave. Here we show that potentials consisting of OPE, two-pion exchange (TPE), and a single contact address these problems and yield accurate and renormalization group (RG) invariant phase shifts in the 1 S 0 partial wave. Here, we demonstrate that a leading-order potential with TPE can be systematically improved by adding a contact quadratic in momenta. For momentum cutoffs Λ ≲ 500 MeV, the removal of relevant physics from TPE loops needs to be compensated by additional contacts to keep RG invariance. Inclusion of the Δ isobar degree of freedom in the potential does not change the strong contributions of TPE.

Deformation of Hydrous Phases Egg [AlSiO 3 (OH)], δ [AlO(OH)] and Stishovite [Si 1‐n H 4n O 2 ] Relevant to Anisotropy of the Earth's Mantle

Seismic anisotropy of the Earth's mantle has been mostly attributed to crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) generated during subduction and convection of an anhydrous mantle. But some hydrous phases are also stable at mantle conditions. Here we present results from diamond-anvil cell deformation experiments at high pressure and temperature on hydrous phases Egg [AlSiO 3 (OH)], δ [AlO(OH)] and hydrous stishovite [Si 1-n H 4n O 2 ], transformed from the clay mineral kaolinite. They develop strong CPO during axial compression, suggesting that they likely contribute to seismic anisotropy and heterogeneity in the mantle. Comparing experimental results with viscoplastic polycrystal plasticity models suggest that phase Egg deforms dominantly by (001) slip, δ by (010) slip and stishovite by {100} slip which could be incorporated in future models of mantle geodynamics.

A 1MHz Oak Ridge AC / DC Converter for UAV Contactless Charger Implementation

In this paper, a 1 MHz single-phase Oak Ridge Converter (ORC) AC/DC wireless power transfer (WPT) system is introduced for unmanned air vehicle (UAV) charging applications. The proposed advanced solution eliminates the design, weight, volume, and the cost of the power factor correcting (PFC) front-end rectifier compared to the conventional practices. Additionally, grid power quality requirements can be achieved with the presented innovative idea. With this method, single stage WPT primary side uses the hybrid grid frequency and high frequency (60 Hz and 1 MHZ) from ac source through the coupler coils and to UAV battery with GaN FETs. Experimental results of the single-phase system is presented to confirm the mathematical analyses with the source voltage of 110 VAC, RMS and output voltage of 40 VDC at 1 kW power with 6 inches air gap between couplers. The primary coupler consists of a ferrite-backed single-turn coil with a radius of 1.5 ft, and the secondary coupler is made with an air-core single-turn coil with radius of 1.2 ft. The system overall ac to dc efficiency is measured 77 % acquiring 0.99 power factor (PF) and 3.3 % current total harmonic distortion (THD) at 1 kW power.

Elastocaloric evidence for a multicomponent superconductor stabilized within the nematic state in Ba(Fe 1− x Co x ) 2 As 2

The iron-based high-$T_c$ superconductors (SCs) exhibit rich phase diagrams with intertwined phases, including magnetism, nematicity, and superconductivity. The superconducting $T_c$ in many of these materials is maximized in the regime of strong nematic fluctuations, making the role of nematicity in influencing the superconductivity a topic of intense research. Here, in this study, we use the AC elastocaloric effect (ECE) to map out the phase diagram of Ba(Fe 1− x Co x ) 2 As 2 near optimal doping. The ECE signature at $T_c$ on the overdoped side, where superconductivity condenses without any nematic order, is quantitatively consistent with other thermodynamic probes that indicate a single-component superconducting state. In contrast, on the slightly underdoped side, where superconductivity condenses within the nematic phase, ECE reveals a second thermodynamic transition proximate to and below $T_c$. We rule out magnetism and reentrant tetragonality as the origin of this transition and find that our observations strongly suggest a phase transition into a multicomponent superconducting state. This implies the existence of a subdominant pairing instability that competes strongly with the dominant $s^±$ instability. Our results highlight the significant role of nematic order in determining the pairing symmetry close to optimal doping in this extensively studied iron-based SC, while also demonstrating the power of ECE in uncovering strain-tuned phase diagrams of quantum materials.

Photoinduced patterning of oxygen vacancies to promote the ferroelectric phase of Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2

Photoinduced reductions in the oxygen vacancy concentration were leveraged to increase the ferroelectric phase fraction of Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 thinfilms. Modest ( ~ 2 — 77 pJ=cm 2 ) laser doses of visible light (488 nm, 2.54 eV) spatially patterned the concentration of oxygen vacancies as monitored by photoluminescence imaging. Local, tip-based, near-field, nanoFTIR measurements showed that the photoinduced oxygen vacancy concentration reduction promoted formation of the ferroelectric phase (space group Pca2 1 ), resulting in an increase in the piezoelectric response measured by piezoresponse force microscopy. Photoinduced vacancy tailoring provides, therefore, a spatially prescriptive, postsynthesis, and low-entry method to modify phase in HfO 2 -based materials.

Zero Magnetic Field Plateau Phase Transition in Higher Chern Number Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulators

The plateau-to-plateau transition in quantum Hall effect under high magnetic fields is a celebrated quantum phase transition between two topological states. It can be achieved by either sweeping the magnetic field or tuning the carrier density. The recent realization of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators with tunable Chern numbers introduces the channel degree of freedom to the dissipation-free chiral edge transport and makes the study of the quantum phase transition between two topological states under zero magnetic field possible. Here, we synthesized the magnetic topological insulator (TI)/TI pentalayer heterostructures with different Cr doping concentrations in the middle magnetic TI layers using molecular beam epitaxy. By performing transport measurements, we found a potential plateau phase transition between C=1 and C=2 QAH states under zero magnetic field. In tuning the transition, the Hall resistance monotonically decreases from h/e2 to h/2e 2 , concurrently, the longitudinal resistance exhibits a maximum at the critical point. Our results show that the ratio between the Hall resistance and the longitudinal resistance is greater than 1 at the critical point, which indicates that the original chiral edge channel from the C=1 QAH state coexists with the dissipative bulk conduction channels. Subsequently, these bulk conduction channels appear to self-organize and form the second chiral edge channel in completing the plateau phase transition. Our study will motivate further investigations of this novel Chern number change-induced quantum phase transition and advance the development of the QAH chiral edge current-based electronic and spintronic devices.

Unusual electronic transport in (1 - x )Cu 2 Se-( x )CuInSe 2 hierarchical composites

The ability to control the relative density of electronic point defects as well as their energy distribution in semiconductors could afford a systematic modulation of their electronic, optical, and optoelectronic properties. Using a model binary hybrid system Cu 2 Se–CuInSe 2 , we have investigated the correlation between phase composition, microstructure, and electronic transport behavior in the synthesized composites. We found that both Cu 2 Se and CuInSe 2 phases coexist at multiple length scales, ranging from sub-ten nanometer to several micrometers, leading to the formation of a hybrid hierarchical microstructure. Astonishingly, the electronic phase diagram of the (1 - x)Cu 2 Se–(x)CuInSe 2 (15% ≤ x ≤ 100%) hierarchical composites remarkably deviates from the trend normally expected for composites between a heavily doped semiconductor (Cu 2 Se) and a poorly conducting phase (CuInSe 2 ). A sudden 3-fold increase in the electrical conductivity and carrier concentration along with a marginal increase in the carrier mobility is observed for composites at the vicinity of equimolar composition (48% ≤ x ≤ 52%). The carrier concentration increases from ~1.5 × 10 20 cm -3 for the composites with x ≤ 45% to 5.0 × 10 20 cm -3 for x = 50%, and remains constant at 4.5 × 10 20 cm -3 with x value in the range of 52% < x ≤ 90%, then quickly drops to 8 × 10 18 cm -3 for pristine CuInSe 2 phase (x = 100%). The atypical electronic behavior was rationalized in the light of the formation of an inter-band (IB) within the band gap, which arises from the hybridization of native electronic point defects from both Cu 2 Se and CuInSe 2 phases in the resulting hierarchical composites. The result points to a new strategy to modulate the electronic structure of semiconductor composites to maximize interaction and coupling between two fundamentally contrasting properties enabling access to electronic hybrid systems with potential applications as interactive and stimuli-responsive multifunctional materials.

Hierarchical Hybrid Multifunctional Materials through Interface Engineering

This project focuses on the development of stimuli-responsive hybrid multifunctional materials. We place emphasis on the design, synthesis, structural characterization, evaluation of functional properties (electronic, thermal and optical) of several (1-x)Cu 2 Se/(x)WBGS hierarchical bulk composites between Cu 2 Se, a narrow band gap semiconductor (NBGS), with a range of wider band gap semiconductors (WBGS) such as CuMSe 2 (M = Al, Ga, In, Fe, Cr) and Cu 4 TiSe 4 . Cu2Se is a well-studied NBGS with excellent thermoelectric properties (high electrical conductivity, large thermopower, etc.) while CuMSe 2 and Cu 4 TiSe 4 are high performance solar absorber materials (large band gap, large absorption coefficient, etc.). Our primary objectives are (i) to demonstrate the ability to integrate dissimilar functional properties such as large optical absorption coefficient and high electronic conductivity, within (1-x)Cu 2 Se/(x)WBGS composite; and (ii) to establish the correlation between the hierarchical structural entanglement of Cu 2 Se with WBGS (CuMSe 2 or Cu 4 TiSe 4 ) phase, the interactions between native electronic defects within the coexisting phases in the resulting (1-x)Cu 2 Se/(x)WBGS bulk composites , and the impacts on their electronic conductivity, thermal transport and optical properties.

Phase transformations and thermal expansion coefficients of unirradiated U-X wt.% Zr (X = 6, 10, 20, 30) measured via neutron diffraction

This work characterizes the crystallographic evolution of unirradiated U-X wt.% Zr (X = 6, 10, 20, 30) while cooling from equilibration, single phase γ-U-Zr, at 900 °C to ambient temperature using time-of-flight neutron diffraction. The β-U phase was unobserved during cooling at 1 °C/min in all alloys. All alloys followed the phase transformation pathway of γ-U-Zr→γ-U-Zr+α-U→α-U +δ-UZr2 with an observed miscibility gap in γ-U-Zr. The α-U and δ-UZr2 transformation took place simultaneously in the U-30 wt.% Zr sample. These findings strengthen the need to re-approach the U-Zr phase diagram in entirety. Bulk volumetric CTEs agree well with published data, strengthening the quantification of lattice-specific CTEs reported in this study. A compositionally dependent discontinuity in thermal expansion, increasing in magnitude with decreasing U content, occurs during the γ-U-Zr→α-U+δ-UZr2 transformation. The γ-U-Zr lattice parameter was measured to have a compositional dependency.

A new field solver for modeling of relativistic particle-laser interactions using the particle-in-cell algorithm

A customized finite-difference field solver for the particle-in-cell (PIC) algorithm that provides higher fidelity for wave-particle interactions in intense electromagnetic waves is presented. In many problems of interest, particles with relativistic energies interact with intense electromagnetic fields that have phase velocities near the speed of light. Numerical errors can arise due to (1) dispersion errors in the phase velocity of the wave, (2) the staggering in time between the electric and magnetic fields and between particle velocity and position and (3) errors in the time derivative in the momentum advance. Errors of the first two kinds are analyzed in detail. It is shown that by using field solvers with different -space operators in Faraday’s and Ampere’s law, the dispersion errors and magnetic field time-staggering errors in the particle pusher can be simultaneously removed for electromagnetic waves moving primarily in a specific direction. Here, the new algorithm was implemented into Osiris by using customized higher-order finite-difference operators. Schemes using the proposed solver in combination with different particle pushers are compared through PIC simulation. It is shown that the use of the new algorithm, together with an analytic particle pusher (assuming constant fields over a time step), can lead to accurate modeling of the motion of a single electron in an intense laser field with normalized vector potentials, eA / mc 2 , exceeding for typical cell sizes and time steps.

Nonperturbative constraints from symmetry and chirality on Majorana zero modes and defect quantum numbers in (2+1) dimensions

In (1+1)D topological phases, unpaired Majorana zero modes (MZMs) can arise only if the internal symmetry group G f of the ground state splits as G f = G b × $Z^f_2$, where $Z^f_2$ is generated by fermion parity, (–1) F . In contrast, (2+1)-dimensional [(2+1)D] topological superconductors (TSC) can host unpaired MZMs at defects even when G f is not of the form G b × $Z^f_2$. In this paper we study how G f together with the chiral central charge c – strongly constrain the existence of unpaired MZMs and the quantum numbers of symmetry defects. Our results utilize a recent algebraic characterization of (2+1)D invertible fermionic topological states, which provides a non-perturbative approach based on topological quantum field theory, beyond free fermions. We study physically relevant groups such as U(1) f $\rtimes$ H, SU (2) f × H, U(2) f $\rtimes$ H, generic Abelian groups, as well as more general compact Lie groups, antiunitary symmetries and crystalline symmetries. Further, we present an algebraic formula for the fermionic crystalline equivalence principle, which gives an equivalence between states with crystalline and internal symmetries. In light of our theory, we discuss several previously proposed realizations of unpaired MZMs in TSC materials such as Sr 2 RuO 4 , transition metal dichalcogenides and iron superconductors, in which crystalline symmetries are often important; in some cases we present additional predictions for the properties of these models.

Small-moment antiferromagnetic ordering in single-crystalline La 2 Ni 7

Single crystals of La 2 Ni 7 have been grown out of a binary, La-Ni melt. Temperature dependent, zero magnetic field, specific heat, electrical resistivity, and low field magnetization measurements indicate that there is a series of antiferromagnetic phase transitions at T 1 = 61.0 ± 0.2 K, T 2 = 56.5 ± 0.2 K and T 3 = 42.2 ± 0.2 K. The three specific heat anomalies found at these temperatures qualitatively have very small entropy changes associated with them and the anisotropic M(H) data saturate at ~ 0.12 μ B /Ni; both observations strongly suggesting the AFM order is associated with very small, itinerant, moments. Anisotropic, H ||c and H ⟂c , ρ(H) and M(H) isotherms as well as constant field, ρ(T) and M(T) sweeps manifest signatures of multiple phase lines and result in HT phase diagrams that are clearly anisotropic. Analysis of M(T) and M(H) data allow for the identification of the two lower temperature magnetically ordered states as antiferromagnetically ordered, with the moments aligned along the crystallographic c-axis, and the higher temperature, T 2 < T < T 1 , state as having a finite ferromagnetic component. In addition, the metamagnetic transition at low temperatures, for H applied along the crystallographic c-axis (H ||c ) appears to be a near classic example of a spin-flop transition, resulting in a field stabilized antiferromagnetic state with the moments ordered perpendicular to the c-axis. Finally, although the small moment ordering, and existence of multiple phase transitions in field and temperature, suggesting an energetic proximity of these states, could foretell a degree of pressure sensitivity, our measurements of R(T) for applied pressures up to 2.0 GPa indicate that there is very little pressure dependence of T 1 , T 2 and T 3 .

Computational Investigation of the Catalytic Hydrodeoxygenation of Propanoic Acid over a Cu(111) Surface

Cu-based alloy catalysts have recently been investigated experimentally for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of biomass-derived organic acids. Here, the HDO of propanoic acid (PAc) has been studied over Cu(111) by mean-field microkinetic modeling based on parameters obtained from first-principles calculations. Models were developed for the gas- and liquid-phase HDO in condensed water and 1,4-dioxane. In agreement with experimental observations, the gas-phase PAc conversion rate is low at 573 K and increases in liquid water by 1 order of magnitude. In all reaction environments, the decarboxylation mechanism is dominant at low hydrogen partial pressures less than 0.1 bar, and the C–COO bond dissociation is the rate-controlling elementary step. This observation contrasts with the rate-controlling step identified over most group VIII metal surfaces, which is the C–OH bond dissociation in the decarbonylation mechanism. At high hydrogen (H 2 ) partial pressures greater than 10 bar, the HDO of PAc produces propionaldehyde that can readsorb and further react through decarbonylation to produce C 2 alkane products, which is conceptually different from the low H 2 partial pressure scenario. At high H 2 partial pressures, the initial hydrogenation at the carbonyl carbon of PAc becomes the rate-controlling elementary step.
