Chemo‐Mechanical Coupling in Hydrogels: Dynamics in the Diffusion‐Limited Regime

Hydrogels are characterized by substantial volume changes in response to external stimuli, making them promising candidates for developing smart materials with enhanced adaptability and responsiveness. By integrating chemical reactions, hydrogels acquire dynamic and tunable responsiveness to external stimuli through chemo‐mechanical coupling, expanding their potential in emerging applications. However, capturing their transient behavior remains challenging due to the complex interplay of chemical reactions, solvent transport, and polymer network deformation. Classical theories capture equilibrium swelling but fail to describe time‐dependent phenomena. To address this, a time‐dependent continuum model is developed that explicitly couples these processes. Volume phase transition in hydrogels with homogeneous chemical reactions is investigated, then the effects of reaction kinetics on these transitions are analyzed. The coupling of these mechanisms is further explored through a study of transient mechanical instabilities. To illustrate the impact of distinct reaction and diffusion timescales, a photo‐active gripper is studied for robotic applications. Finally, a photo‐active microswimmer that exhibits non‐reciprocal motion is proposed to highlight the solvent diffusion for locomotion at the micro‐ and nano‐ scales. The work establishes that transient dynamics of chemo‐mechanical hydrogels generate functions not accessible by steady state models and provides a predictive platform for designing adaptive materials in emerging applications.

Emergence of Complex Modes in Lightly Damped Structural Systems

In this short presentation format, we will provide a set of useful equations, relationships, and physical interpretations direct from the damped two-mode interaction problem. We will demonstrate that the results from the two-mode interaction problem are in direct agreement with observed test data. Practical methods for estimating the parameters driving the relations direct from modal test data are provided. We finalize with two examples demonstrating weak and strong interactions.

Revealing the Roles of CuF 2 /NiF 2 Incorporation in the Electrochemical Performance of FeF 3 Cathodes in Solid‐State Batteries

Mixed metal fluorides have been considered as a promising candidate to lower the voltage hysteresis of conversion-type iron fluoride cathodes, but their cycling stability is limited due to transition metal dissolution and interphase growth in liquid electrolyte batteries. Here, we study the role of incorporating CuF 2 and NiF 2 in the electrochemical performance of FeF 3 cathode in halide-based solid-state batteries to test whether we can transfer the kinetic benefit of low voltage hysteresis to solid-state batteries while using solid electrolyte to eliminate transition metal dissolution and stabilize the interphase. Synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy results indicated the redox reactions are attributed to Cu 0 /Cu + and Fe 0 /Fe 2+ in 25CuF 2 -75FeF 3 and Ni 0 /Ni 2+ and Fe 0 /Fe 3+ in 10NiF 2 -90FeF 3 . While no apparent improvement in electrode kinetics can be observed, the incorporation of CuF 2 and NiF 2 can largely improve the cycling stability of FeF 3 cathodes. In conclusion, the results demonstrate the advantages of using solid-state concept to improve the cycling stability of conversion-type cathodes.

Analysis of Surface and Bulk Behavior in Ni-Pd Alloys

The most salient features of the surface structure and bulk behavior of Ni-Pd alloys have been studied using the BFS method for alloys. Large-scale atomistic simulations were performed to investigate surface segregation profiles as a function of temperature, crystal face, and composition. Pd enrichment of the first layer was observed in (111) and (100) surfaces, and enrichment of the top two layers occurred for (110) surfaces. In all cases, the segregation profile shows alternate planes enriched and depleted in Pd. In addition, the phase structure of bulk Ni-Pd alloys as a function of temperature and composition was studied. A weak ordering tendency was observed at low temperatures, which helps explain the compositional oscillations in the segregation profiles. Finally, based on atom-by-atom static energy calculations, a comprehensive explanation for the observed surface and bulk features will be presented in terms of competing chemical and strain energy effects.

Laser Beam Welding Benchmark Experiments Performed in Reduced Gravity and Vacuum

Laser beam welding (LBW) is affected by the extreme temperatures, reduced pressure, and reduced gravity present in space environments. Gravity and pressure especially influence its melt pool and solidification dynamics. A compact, modular vacuum chamber adaptable to flight platforms from parabolic to orbital currently hosts an experiment to investigate the combined influence of reduced gravity and pressure on LBW. A swappable cartridge contains a rotating platen on which customizable workpieces can be welded under vacuum, greatly increasing experimental throughput. Instrumentation includes weld and thermal cameras observing the process, thermocouples placed on workpieces, accelerometers, and vacuum sensors. Experimental data gathered during the welding process will be combined with post-flight nondestructive evaluation, metallography, and mechanical testing to provide validation datasets for computational modeling. Phase I of this effort involves a parabolic flight campaign in low gravity while an anticipated Phase II would proceed to in-space demonstration to access extended duration microgravity.

Modeling of a Four-Stage Linear Ionization Cooling Channel for a Muon Collider in G4Beamline

A previous study of an eight-stage rectilinear ionization cooling channel in the ICOOL software demonstrated a five-order-of-magnitude reduction in a muon beam’s 6D emittance. In this study, we look to compare the ways ICOOL and Muons, Inc.’s g4Beamline software model ionization cooling by comparing their modeling of the first four stages to this optimized cooling channel constructed in ICOOL. We begin by identifying the parameters used to construct the optimized ionization cooling channel in ICOOL. We then reconstruct this beam in g4Beamline with identical parameter specifications and simulate the cooling of an identical input beam. Finally, we compare the two simulations based on their beam transmission, longitudinal emittance, and transverse emittance along the channel length. Through this process, we demonstrate that G4Beamline accurately reproduces transverse cooling results but predicts systematically different longitudinal emittance evolution while maintaining similar overall cooling performance, reproducing a 97.9% reduction in 6D emittance over four stages.

Role of Fluid and Temperature in Fracture Mechanics and Coupled THMC Processes for Enhanced Geothermal Systems

The ability to sustain high energy extraction efficiency from Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) is affected by the ability to measure, characterize, and predict the effect of different perturbations that arise from fluid injection rates, fluid temperature, and shut-in conditions on existing and stimulated fracture systems throughout a subsurface reservoir’s lifecycle. The difficulty arises from limited knowledge of the interaction of fluid and temperature driven fractures with frictional interfaces that govern local deformation and frictional behavior in the surrounding rock. Thermo-poro-mechanical coupled processes tend to dominate this interaction and strongly affect the permeability and local stress distributions that impact efficiency and prevent optimal stimulation conditions over multi-decadal time frames.

Superconductivity in Ruddlesden–Popper nickelates: a review of recent progress, focusing on thin films

The discovery of superconductivity with Tc ∼ 80 K in the nickelate Ruddlesden-Popper bilayer La3Ni2O7 at high pressure has opened a new platform for unconventional superconductivity, followed by the subsequent observation of superconductivity in trilayer La4Ni3O10, also at high pressure. Remarkably, ambient-pressure superconductivity was also observed recently in La3Ni2O7 ultra-thin films when grown on substrates that provide compressive strain. This discovery significantly extends the type of experimental techniques that can be used in nickelates, previously limited due to the high-pressure constraint. Discussing the similarities and differences among these nickel oxides will provide new insights into understanding the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity in correlated electron systems. In this paper, we review the experimental and theoretical progress on Ruddlesden–Popper nickelates, with emphasis on thin films, and discuss future perspectives and research directions.
