Dynamic Microgrids in Resilient Distribution Systems With Reconfigurable Cyber-Physical Networks

Modern distribution systems energized by inverter-interfaced distributed generators (DGs) operate as coupled cyber-physical networks (C/P-networks), where the controllable components in the physical network (P-network) are coordinated through the cyber network (C-network). The concept of dynamic microgrids (MGs) operation has been adopted to enable distribution system autonomous operation with varying electric boundaries. To further enhance system operation resiliency and flexibility, dynamic MGs operation with reconfigurable C/P-networks is discussed in this work. An evaluation framework is proposed to assess the operational feasibility of distribution feeders with multiple inverter-based dynamic MGs and come out with possible restoration solutions in the context of cross-layer C/P-network reconfiguration. Furthermore, distributed controllers are developed for components with different operating characteristics to realize seamless system topology variations and provide coordinated secondary regulation in various operation modes. Furthermore, the proposed evaluation framework along with the developed distributed controller has been validated using a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) real-time CPS testbed.

Automated Labeling of Electron Microscopy Images Using Deep Learning

© 2018 IEEE. Searching for scientific data requires metadata providing a relevant context. Today, generating metadata is a time and labor intensive manual process that is often neglected, and important datasets are not accessible through search. We investigate the use of machine learning to generalize metadata from a subset of labeled data, thus increasing the availability of meaningful metadata for search. Specifically, we consider electron microscopy images collected at the National Center for Electron Microscopy (NCEM) at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and use deep learning to discern characteristics from a small subset of labeled images and transfer labels to the entire image corpus. Relatively small training set sizes and a minimum resolution of 512\times 512 pixels required by the application domain pose unique challenges. We overcome these challenges by using a simple yet powerful convolutional network architecture that limits the number of free parameters to lower the required amount of computational power and reduce the risk of overfitting. We achieve a classification accuracy of approximately 80% in discerning between images recorded in two operating modes of the electron microscope-transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). We use transfer learning-i.e., re-using the pre-trained convolution layers from the TEM vs. STEM classification problem-to generalize labels and achieve an accuracy of approximately 70 % despite current experiments being limited to small training data sets. We present these predictions as suggestions to domain scientists through a web-based tool to accelerate the labeling process with the goal of further validating our approach and improving the accuracy of automatically created labels.

Microgrid Power Flow Control with Integrated Battery Management Functions

This paper presents a microgrid power flow control for islanded microgrids consisting of photovoltaic (PV) system, battery energy storage system (BESS) and diesel generator. The proposed control ensures automatic coordination among the microgrid units. To achieve the coordination, the local control of PV system and BESS are configured to regulate power flow without relying on communications. The generator is controlled as the back-up source and its connection depends on battery state of charge (SOC). A state machine with hysteresis settings is used to trigger smooth transition among operation modes. Not only does the proposed controller consider battery SOC and power limits, but also integrates three-stage charging control as battery charging mechanism, which is not considered in the existing literature. The proposed control is validated for an islanded hybrid microgrid using an OPAL-RT real-time simulator.

Dynamic Modeling of Full Converter Adjustable-speed Pumped Storage Hydropower (FC AS-PSH)

Full converter adjustable-speed pumped storage hydropower (FC AS-PSH) technology, as one of advanced-PSH technology, is developed from wind turbine technology. By making the synchronous machine connect to the grid through a full-size converter, FC AS-PSH has a wider adjustment range of speed and a better reactive power control capability compared with a doubly-fed asynchronous generator AS-PSH technology. When it plays as an energy backup in the power system, FC AS-PSH can provide a much faster response than conventional-PSH (C-PSH) which makes this technology provide better ancillary service for a high renewable penetrated system. In this paper, the dynamic modeling of FC AS-PSH is fully studied. We develop a detailed model of this technology in the IEEE 14-bus system based on GE Positive Sequence Load Flow (PSLF) platform. Especially, the first governor model is developed based on the Engineer’s Program Control Language (EPCL) user-defined model in this platform. All operation modes are validated and studied under a system contingency. Besides, comparison cases between FC AS-PSH and C-PSH are studied to show advantages providing from FC AS-PSH when it works with renewable energy.

Tuning of Multicell Superconducting Accelerating Cavities Using Pressurized Balloons

Plastic tuning of multicell superconducting accelerating cavities is crucial in the development cycle of cavities for particle accelerators. Cavities must meet stringent requirements regarding the operating mode frequency, field flatness, and eccentricity before lining them up in a cryomodule string. After dressing bare cavities with helium vessels, the welded vessel prevents access to individual cavity cells disallowing any further localized tuning. Currently, there is no straightforward way to tune dressed cavities other than cutting the vessel and then tuning the bare cavity and dressing it back, which would significantly impact cost and schedule. In this work, we present a novel tuning technique for already jacketed cavities that is non-invasive and cost-effective. The proposed scheme employs pressurized balloons to be temporarily deployed inside the cavity as a means to localize mechanical deformation in specific cells. The proposed tuning technique was successfully utilized to recover a 9-cell 1.3 GHz tesla-style cavity.

Charge Trap Layer Supercharging for Improved Bit Reliability in 3-D NAND Flash Under Proton Irradiation

Single-event upset (SEU) cross sections are reduced in 176-layer charge trap (CT) 3-D nand devices under proton irradiation when multiple write operations are applied sequentially without the typical erase-before-write. Here, this effect is observed for multiple data patterns and in both single-level cell (SLC) and triple-level cell (TLC) operating modes. SEU cross section calculation methodologies are discussed for highly scaled 3-D devices both with and without the application of rewrites, and potential implications for long-term endurance effects are proposed.

Exact Solution of ZVS Boundaries and AC-Port Currents in Dual Active Bridge Type DC–DC Converters

The paper presents an approach to develop an exact, unified model of zero voltage switching (ZVS) regions and AC current (peak and RMS) in dual active bridge (DAB) type DC-DC converters for all its operating modes and modulation strategies. It is executed for a single phase system, where the method is used to compute closed form expressions of AC current at switching instants. Then, exact formulae of ZVS regions for all devices, and system peak and RMS currents are derived. As a result, simulation and hardware results are reported to validate the proposed approach.

A Method to Identify the Heat Flux From Photons and Neutrals at the Divertor Target

The Surface Eroding Thermocouple (SETC) is a diagnostic designed for fast surface heat flux measurement and has been successfully applied in DIII-D to investigate divertor detachment. A novel method has been developed of using a combination of surface-facing and recessed SETCs to distinguish between the heat flux from charged particles, and that from neutrals and radiative heating. Furthermore, this technique suggests that at least 20% of the total incident heat flux is attributable to the latter sources not trapped in the magnetic field in a fully detached open divertor condition. It not only indicates the non-charged particle heating significantly contributes to the total surface heat flux in detached divertor conditions, but also demonstrates the feasibility of using two operational modes of SETCs to distinguish between the two surface heating mechanisms.

SVM-Based Parameter Identification for Composite ZIP and Electronic Load Modeling

This paper proposes a parameter identification technique for composite ZIP and electronic loads by leveraging the support vector machine (SVM) approach. Since the active power and the reactive power of electronic loads are piecewise functions of the voltage magnitude, the operating modes of electronic loads are determined by the voltage magnitude. To improve the accuracy of parameter identification, two filters (Hampel and Savitzky–Golay) are employed to preprocess measurements to reduce noise. The data after noise reduction serve as training data for the regression model that is solved by the SVM approach. Numerical results show that the SVM approach with filters can identify the parameters of the composite ZIP and electronic load model with high accuracy

Coordination of Wind Farm and Pumped-Storage Hydro for a Self-Healing Power Grid

The increasing penetration of wind energy poses great challenges to the operation of power systems in normal and emergency states. However, energy storage technologies can help accommodate wind power uncertainty and variability due to their flexible characteristics. This paper focuses on the restoration phase, and provides a novel coordination strategy of wind and pumped-storage hydro (PSH) units for a faster and reliable self-healing process. The wind-PSH assisted power system restoration is formulated as a two-stage adaptive robust optimization problem. The first-stage problem determines the start-up sequence of generators and the energization times of transmission paths; and the second-stage problem decides load pickup sequences, wind power dispatch levels, and PSH units' operating modes. The column-and-constraint generation decomposition algorithm is applied to solve the two-stage adaptive robust optimization problem, which has a mixed-integer optimization in the inner-level problem. The developed coordination strategy is tested on the modified IEEE 39-bus system. Numerical results demonstrate that the coordinated wind and PSH units can increase the total energy served, enhance wind power dispatchability, and reduce wind power curtailment.

High-Fidelity Energy Deposition Ignition Model Coupled with Flame Propagation Models at Engine-like Flow Conditions

With the heightened pressure on car manufacturers to increase the efficiency and reduce the carbon emissions of their fleets, more challenging engine operation has become a viable option. Highly dilute, boosted, and stratified charge, among others, promise engine efficiency gains and emissions reductions. At such demanding engine conditions, the spark-ignition process is a key factor for the flame initiation propagation and the combustion event. From a computational standpoint, there exist multiple spark-ignition models that perform well under conventional conditions but are not truly predictive under strenuous engine operation modes, where the underlying physics needs to be expanded. In this paper, a hybrid Lagrangian-Eulerian spark-ignition (LESI) model is coupled with different turbulence models, grid sizes, and combustion models. The ignition model, previously developed, relies on coupling Eulerian energy deposition with a Lagrangian particle evolution of the spark channel, at every time-step. The spark channel is attached to the electrodes and allowed to elongate at a speed derived from the flow velocity. The LESI model is used to simulate spark ignition in a nonquiescent crossflow environment at engine-like conditions, using converge commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver. The results highlight the consistency, robustness, and versatility of the model in a range of engine-like setups, from typical with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and a larger grid size to high fidelity with large-eddy simulation (LES) and a finer grid size. The flame kernel growth is then evaluated against Schlieren images from an optical constant volume ignition chamber with a focus on the performance of flame propagation models, such as G-equation and thickened flame model, versus the baseline well-stirred reactor model. Finally, future development details are discussed.
