Lessons Learned from Industry Engagement in Export Controls

There are several U.S. government-sponsored programs with significant experience engaging with foreign government and industry partners to support capacity-building in export controls. This work seeks to answer the question: How can the outreach experience of the U.S. government-sponsored export control capacity-building programs (ECCBP) inform best practices for engaging with advanced reactor vendors in the domain of international nuclear safeguards? To answer this question, we interviewed export control subject matter experts with experience working for the U.S. ECCBPs – the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), the Export Control and Related Border Security (EXBS) program, and the International Nonproliferation Export Control Program (INECP) – and developed a set of recommendations for industry engagement based on the collective experience of interviewees.

IBR Black Model Lessons Learned (C45)

Blackbox modelling for SC analysis is a possible solution. Accuracy can be acceptable even without having vendor control diagrams. Blackbox modelling is not as user friendly as a generic model. Is an NDA required to share a vendor Blackbox model for SC analysis? Difference in VRT detection and injection logics. Angle rotation is not addressed. Current limitation logic during unbalanced faults is not clear.

Creating a Salt Batch: Challenges and Lessons Learned

CONCLUSION • The overall Salt Batch system has been honed through each iteration of the process • Increased communication across facilities and work groups has enabled the salt team to react swiftly to emergent items and identify improvement opportunities • Even the best plans require backup options – Emergent items can appear at any time during the process – Flexibility to adapt to the unexpected is a must-have team mindset • To date, every salt batch compiled has been qualified and approved as feed for SWPF – No feed break has occurred between the Tank Farm and SWPF

Spallation Neutron Source Proton Power Upgrade (PPU) Project: Lessons Learned for CD-4

The SNS PPU project goals were to design, build, install and test the equipment necessary to double the accelerator power from 1.4 MW to 2.8 MW and to deliver a 2.0 MW qualified target. PPU also included the provision of a stub-out in the SNS accumulator-ring-to-target tunnel to facilitate a rapid connection to a new proton beamline for the Second Target Station (STS) project. The power capability was doubled by increasing the proton beam energy by 33% and the peak beam current by 50%, relative to pre-PPU accelerator performance. The project also included modifications to some buildings and services. The PPU project accomplished the energy upgrade by fabricating and installing new superconducting radiofrequency (RF) cryomodules, with supporting RF equipment, in the existing linac tunnel and klystron gallery, respectively. The High Voltage Converter Modulators (HVCM) and klystrons for some of the existing installed RF equipment were upgraded to handle the higher beam current. The increased beam power of 2 MW on the First Target Station (FTS) was enabled by the addition of a new high-volume gas injection system for pressure pulse and cavitation mitigation in the mercury target and a redesigned mercury target vessel.

Lessons Learned from the Ongoing Response to the COVID-19 Crisis

The global COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted nearly every facet of daily life and forced state regulators, utilities, industry stakeholders, and customers to adjust to a rapidly changing landscape. At the initial onset of the pandemic, similar to other natural disasters, the immediate focus of response was on safety and life- saving measures.
