ARM Aerosol Measurement Science Group 2024 Strategic Planning Workshop Report

This report summarizes the results of the 2024 Strategic Planning Workshop conducted by the Aerosol Measurement Science Group (AMSG) for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility. The objective of this workshop was to provide ARM facility guidance through specific recommendations relating to aerosol science for a period of five years. The AMSG primary focus of this workshop was to help advance strategic external partnership engagement for ARM’s aerosol measurement program. The workshop was held July 9-10, 2024 at the University of Utah. This was the third such workshop since the AMSG was chartered in 2015 to enhance coordination of ARM observations of aerosols and atmospheric trace gases with the needs of ARM users.

ARM FY2025 Radar Plan

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility is dedicated to delivering high-quality radar data that significantly advance our understanding of cloud and precipitation processes, improving climate models. With radars operating across diverse frequencies, scanning modes, and global climate conditions, extensive staffing is essential for effective management. Due to current staffing constraints, achieving the expected level of operational excellence requires a more strategic approach. To address this challenge, ARM has developed an operational radar plan for the upcoming Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) based on budget and staffing considerations. This report summarizes the Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24) ARM radar-related activities and outlines the strategic plan for FY25. It presents a comprehensive radar plan that includes detailed activities, priorities, and a projected timeline aligned with the ARM radar roadmap. Key tasks, detailed in Table 1, cover various radar operational stages and coordinated efforts among ARM teams.

Study of design and control of remote manipulators. Modeling manipulator arms with distributed flexibility for design and control

The interactions of control system and distributed flexible structural dynamics is explored for mechanical arms. A modeling process using 4 x 4 transfer matrices is described which permits the closed loop response of many current arm configurations to be evaluated. Root locus, frequency response, modal shapes, and time impulse response have all been obtained from the digital computer implementation of this model, which is oriented to arm design and allows for easy variation of the arm configuration through data cards. The model corresponds with experimentally observed natural frequencies with an average error of less than 5% in the first three flexible modes in the seven cases considered. The model was used to explore the limits imposed by structural flexibility on a nondimensionalized two link arm with one and two joints for planar motion.

Apparatus for applying simulator g-forces to an arm of an aircraft simulator pilot

A device to be used with an aircraft simulator to apply positive and negative g forces to the pilot's arm is described. An arm harness fits around the arm which the pilot uses to operate the throttle. The device allows the harness to track intentional arm movements without exerting any restraining forces, and at the same time, applies g forces to to the pilots arm which are recorded by the aircraft simulator computer.

Computer interface for mechanical arm

Man/machine interface commands computer-controlled mechanical arm. Remotely-controlled arm has six degrees of freedom and is controlled through "supervisory-control" mode, in which all motions of arm follow set of preprogramed sequences. For simplicity, few prescribed commands are required to accomplish entire operation. Applications include operating computer-controlled arm to handle radioactive of explosive materials or commanding arm to perform functions in hostile environments. Modified version using displays may be applied in medicine.

Computing Relative Joint Positions of Robot Arms

Vector-algebra method developed for extracting Denavit-Hartenberg parameters for any assembled robot arm. Method for extracting relative joint geometry of robot arms useful to researchers who need data for existing robot arms for either validation of mathematical models or for studies involving actual control of these devices. Method, does not require robot arm to be disassembled, also useful in recalibration of misalined or bent robot arm and becomes useful industrial procedure. Merit of method is errors not propagated.

Two-Arm-Manipulator Controller

Shoulder harness allows wearer to control simultaneously and independently two remote manipulator arms and end effectors. Each manipulator arm would have 7 degrees of freedom. Two arm mechanisms of controller moved by operator's arms and hands. Remote manipulator, located elsewhere, responds to operator's arm and hand movements. Adjustable shoulder straps, waist belt, and leg straps hold harness securely on wearer. Mechanisms and harness allow operator to reach almost normally at control station.

Recursive forward dynamics for multiple robot arms moving a common task object

Recursive forward dynamics algorithms are developed for an arbitrary number of robot arms moving a commonly held object. The multiarm forward dynamics problem is to find the angular accelerations at the joints and the contact forces that the arms impart to the task object. The problem also involves finding the acceleration of this object. The multiarm forward dynamics solutions provide a thorough physical and mathematical understanding of the way several arms behave in response to a set of applied joint moments. Such an understanding simplifies and guides the subsequent control design and experimentation process. The forward dynamics algorithms also provide the necessary analytical foundation for conducting analysis and simulation studies. The multiarm algorithms are based on the filtering and smoothing approach recently advanced for single-arm dynamics, and they can be built up modularly from the single-arm algorithms. The algorithms compute recursively the joint-angle accelerations, the contact forces, and the task-object accelerations. Algorithms are also developed to evaluate in closed form the linear transformations from the active joint moments to the joint-angle accelerations, to the task-object accelerations., and to the task-object contact forces. A possible computing architecture is presented as a precursor to a more complete investigation of the computational performance of the dynamics algorithms.

Adaptive Control For Cooperative Dual Robot Arms

Three strategies proposed for adaptive control of two cooperative robot arms. New dual-arm control strategies implemented at low level of control hierarchy. Each arm operated independently under single-arm control scheme treating forces and torques transmitted through load as though disturbances. Yields promising results in numerical simulations, and general approach extended to greater numbers of arms.

Autonomous sensor-based dual-arm satellite grappling

Dual-arm satellite grappling involves the integration of technologies developed in the Sensing and Perception (S&P) Subsystem for object acquisition and tracking, and the Manipulator Control and Mechanization (MCM) Subsystem for dual-arm control. S&P acquires and tracks the position, orientation, velocity, and angular velocity of a slowly spinning satellite, and sends tracking data to the MCM subsystem. MCM grapples the satellite and brings it to rest, controlling the arms so that no excessive forces or torques are exerted on the satellite or arms. A 350-pound satellite mockup which can spin freely on a gimbal for several minutes, closely simulating the dynamics of a real satellite is demonstrated. The satellite mockup is fitted with a panel under which may be mounted various elements such as line replacement modules and electrical connectors that will be used to demonstrate servicing tasks once the satellite is docked. The subsystems are housed in three MicroVAX II microcomputers. The hardware of the S&P Subsystem includes CCD cameras, video digitizers, frame buffers, IMFEX (a custom pipelined video processor), a time-code generator with millisecond precision, and a MicroVAX II computer. Its software is written in Pascal and is based on a locally written vision software library. The hardware of the MCM Subsystem includes PUMA 560 robot arms, Lord force/torque sensors, two MicroVAX II computers, and unimation pneumatic parallel grippers. Its software is written in C, and is based on a robot language called RCCL. The two subsystems are described and test results on the grappling of the satellite mockup with rotational rates of up to 2 rpm are provided.

The molecular spiral arms of NGC 6946

High resolution observations of molecules in external galaxies are essential to understanding physical processes leading to the formation of stars. One question is whether there is a spiral structure in the molecular gas, but it was not possible to resolve the spiral arms of external galaxies until the advent of large millimeter-wave telescopes. With the Institute for Radio Astronomy in the Millimeter Range (IRAM) 30 m telescope, researchers are carrying through the mapping of NGC 6946 in the CO-12(1-0) and (2-1) lines. This galaxy is a large, gas-rich Scd spiral with a strong star formation activity. NGC 6946 is well studied at radio and optical wavelengths, so that it is possible to compare the location of the spiral arms tracers: HI ridge, HII regions and molecular clouds. The disk CO emission is very contrasted (no lines for some positions, 1 K in CO(1-0) for some others) and correlated with the optical spiral arms: this clearly shows up in a figure which presents superimposed contours of CO(2-1) integrated emissivity and of H alpha line emission. The agreement is very good, and there is no displacement across the arm between the CO, HI and H alpha ridges of emission. The arms are barely resolved by the 23 inch beam and the molecular contrast averaged over the map is about 4. The CO(2-1) maxima are closer to the position of the HII regions than those of CO(1-0), which could be due to variations of excitation conditions. The CO excitation in the disk of NGC 6946 is low: when all data are convolved to the same resolution of 23 inches the CO(2-1) lines are about 0.45 times fainter than the CO(1-0) ones, while in the nucleus they have roughly the same intensity. This suggests that in the disk of NGC 6946 most of the CO emission comes from cold optically thick gas located in cloud envelopes rather than from cloud cores. The molecular and atomic component in the observed regions of NGC 6946 seems to be organized in large gaseous complexes.

Control strategy for cooperating disparate manipulators: Non-colocated control of disturbances of a flexible arm

The long term objectives for this research are to use a small robot arm to compliment a large robot arm. Disturbances generated by robot tasks were studied. Available equipment made it convenient to study disturbances generated by an abrasive cut off saw mounted on the tip of a large armed robot, and used to cut through rods and pipes in the range of 0.5 in. to 1.5 in. The abrasive process was modeled as a friction operation. The operation of the cut off saw was performed autonomously and under teleoperated control. The behavior was stable in both cases for a P-D joint control algorithm. It was found that broad band excitation during the cutting operation is capable of exciting arm natural frequencies to above the third natural frequency of the arm. The direction of cut changed the modes excited due to the change in coupling coefficients.

Kinematic analysis of 7 DOF anthropomorphic arms

A kinematic analysis of anthropomorphic seven-degree-of-freedom serial link spatial manipulators with revolute joints is presented. To uniquely determine joint angles for a given end-effector position and orientation, the redundancy is parameterized by a scalar variable which corresponds to the angle between the arm plane and a reference plane. The forward kinematic mappings from joint-space to end-effector coordinates and arm angle and the augmented Jacobian matrix which gives end-effector and arm angle rates as functions of joint rates are given. Conditions under which the augmented Jacobian becomes singular are given and are shown to correspond to the arm being either at a kinematically singular configuration or at a nonsingular configuration for which the arm angle ceases to parameterize the redundancy.

Orbit crowding of molecular gas at a bar-spiral arm transition zone in M83

The southwestern bar-spiral arm transition zone in M83 is been studied in CO, H-alpha, H I, red light, and the radio continuum. A massive molecular gas complex in the heart of the transition zone is composed or two principal components which have the morphology and kinematics expected from orbit crowding, where gas on highly elliptical orbits form the bar region converges with gas on more circular orbits from the spiral arm region. Three mechanisms for the origin of the orbit crowding are investigated, and it is proposed that the crowding is due primarily to density wave streaming motions caused by the bar and spiral arms. The inner CO component is partially coincident with a region of highly polarized radio continuum emission which precedes the H-alpha spiral arm by 15-25 arcsec, indicating that it lies on or just downstream from a shock front. This suggests that the bar gas approaching the transition zone is shocked and explains the ridge of dense gas seen upstream from the spiral arm.

A molecular gas ridge offset from the dust lane in a spiral arm of M83

A high-resolution interferometric map of the CO emission on the eastern spiral arm of M83 is presented. The detected emission originates in about five unresolved components located parallel but about 300 pc downstream from the dust lane which lies along the inner edge of the spiral arm. All the CO components in the map but one are located within 130 pc of an H II region and may represent emission from locally heated gas. The lack of CO emission on the dust lane indicates that the dense molecular gas does not pile up here in M83. Remarkable differences between the molecular gas distributions in M83 and the spiral arms or M51, where CO emission peaks on the dust lane, is attributed to the difference in the strength of their density waves. The observations of M83 are consistent with the model of Elmegreen in which diffuse gas is compressed at the shock front, producing the dust lane at the inner edge of the spiral arm while dense giant molecular clouds pass through the front and form a broad distribution on the arm.

Anthropomorphic dual-arm space telemanipulation system

Dexterous dual-arm manipulations are feasible with the system described and illustrated in the paper. The structure is based on an extensible host arm that carries the dual-arm robot which comprises two 7-DOF arms each of which includes a hand with a thumb and three fingers with 4 DOF each. Joint compliance can be stiffened to any level, and the operator uses arm harnesses and gloves to utilize the robotics in an anthropomorphic fashion. The configuration eliminates coordinate-transformation computations, and the system is found to achieve a control-frequency rate of 1000 Hz for its direct man/machine interfaces based on fiber-optic cables. The electronics control for the system utilizes a sensory system consisting of force, position, and compliance sensors. The robotics system is expected to be a user-friendly device that permits assembly, repair, tethering, and other complex mechanical operations.

Evaluation of inertial devices for the control of large, flexible, space-based telerobotic arms

Inertial devices, including sensors and actuators, offer the potential of improving the tracking of telerobotic commands for space-based robots by smoothing payload motions and suppressing vibrations. In this paper, inertial actuators (specifically, torque-wheels and reaction-masses) are studied for that potential application. Batch simulation studies are presented which show that torque-wheels can reduce the overshoot in abrupt stop commands by 82 percent for a two-link arm. For man-in-the-loop evaluation, a real-time simulator has been developed which samples a hand-controller, solves the nonlinear equations of motion, and graphically displays the resulting motion on a computer workstation. Currently, two manipulator models, a two-link, rigid arm and a single-link, flexible arm, have been studied. Results are presented which show that, for a single-link arm, a reaction-mass/torque-wheel combination at the payload end can yield a settling time of 3 s for disturbances in the first flexible mode as opposed to 10 s using only a hub motor. A hardware apparatus, which consists of a single-link, highly flexible arm with a hub motor and a torque-wheel, has been assembled to evaluate the concept and is described herein.
