Expansion and improvements of the FORMA system for response and load analysis. Volume 1: Programming manual

Techniques are presented for the solution of structural dynamic systems on an electronic digital computer using FORMA (FORTRAN Matrix Analysis). FORMA is a library of subroutines coded in FORTRAN 4 for the efficient solution of structural dynamics problems. These subroutines are in the form of building blocks that can be put together to solve a large variety of structural dynamics problems. The obvious advantage of the building block approach is that programming and checkout time are limited to that required for putting the blocks together in the proper order.

Wind profiles for Space Shuttle loads analysis

The small scale wind velocity perturbations in vertical wind profiles at Cape Kennedy, Florida were analyzed in order to derive information for simulations of space shuttle ascent through the perturbed atmosphere. The available statistical data does not permit specification of various aspects of idealized singularities and wavelike perturbations with a reasonable degree of confidence. The information developed as a result of the analysis described in Section 3 of this report is suitable for the further development of idealized models. The term perturbation is used instead of the more common term, gust. According to the conventional approach, a gust profile is calculated by applying a high pass digital filter to a Jimsphere profile; all the speeds in the filtered profile are defined as gusts. The high pass filtered profile is defined as a residual profile and the maximum residual in the vicinity of a specified reference height is defined as the gust. Gusts defined in this manner represent the perturbation peaks. A detailed discussion of the calculation of residual profiles and gusts is given. The meteorological coordinate system, the data sample, and Jimsphere profiles are also described. Recommendations and conclusions are presented.

ARES I-X USS Fracture Analysis Loads Spectra Development

This report describes the development of a set of bounding load spectra for the ARES I-X launch vehicle. These load spectra are used in the determination of the critical initial flaw size (CIFS) of the welds in the ARES I-X upper stage simulator (USS).

Development of the ITACA Network Loading Analysis Tool's Scheduling Techniques

NASA's SCENIC project aims to simplify and reduce the cost of space mission planning by creating analysis capabilities which are integrated with relevant analysis parameters specific to SCaN assets and SCaN supported user missions. The Integrated Tradespace Analysis of Communications Architectures (ITACA) will provide an all-in-one package for various analysis capabilities that normally require add-ons or multiple tools to complete. The ITACA tool will be responsible for assessing the given network architecture and generating a schedule for the missions as well as the assets. ITACA will allow users to evaluate the quality of service of a given network and determine whether or not the network will satisfy the mission's requirements. ITACA is currently under development, and during the spring of 2018 major development in the tools scheduling techniques were completed. A total of seven different techniques were completed.

Evaluation of a cost-effective loads approach

A shock spectra/impedance method for loads prediction is used to estimate member loads for the Viking Orbiter, a 7800-lb interplanetary spacecraft that has been designed using transient loads analysis techniques. The transient loads analysis approach leads to a lightweight structure but requires complex and costly analyses. To reduce complexity and cost a shock spectra/impedance method is currently being used to design the Mariner Jupiter Saturn spacecraft. This method has the advantage of using low-cost in-house loads analysis techniques and typically results in more conservative structural loads. The method is evaluated by comparing the increase in Viking member loads to the loads obtained by the transient loads analysis approach. An estimate of the weight penalty incurred by using this method is presented. The paper also compares the calculated flight loads from the transient loads analyses and the shock spectra/impedance method to measured flight data.
