Flow Sensor Test Article (F-STAr) - Assembly and Water Testing Report

The Flow Sensor Test Article (F-STAr) is a new test article under development for the Mechanisms Engineering Test Loop (METL) facility at Argonne National Laboratory. F-STAr’s purpose is to provide sodium submersible, high flowrate testing capabilities for the development of sensors, components, fluid studies and more. This report will provide a status update on the assembly and initial qualification testing of F-STAr. All components have been manufactured and received. Some modifications to these components were made to support minor changes in the test article design. Additionally, the power distribution, and data acquisition and control enclosures were designed, completed, and tested along with the control system software. Furthermore, initial qualification testing was completed in water. Finally, the F-STAr submersible Electromagnetic Flowmeter (EMFM) was completed and calibrated in flowing sodium.

Mark I Silicon Carbide Integrated Circuit Test Oven Assembly and Programming Guide

This report provides a parts list, with assembly and programming instructions for building firstgeneration (Mark I) compact test ovens; this oven design is customized for prolonged functional electrical testing of prototype silicon carbide (SiC) devices at temperatures up to 500 °C (932 °F). The general approach of using multiple compact ovens to perform long-term, high-temperature electronics testing efficiently is described in a conference paper (Izadnegahdar, Alain, et al.: Alternative Setup for LongDuration Low-Duty-Cycle 600 °C Ambient Testing of SiC Integrated Circuits. International Microelectronics Assembly and Packaging Society (iMAPS) HiTECH 2021 Technology Crossover Extravaganza, 2021), available at https://ntrs.nasa.gov/citations/20210011676. The new Mark I oven design described here offers several significant improvements over the compact oven described in that paper. For example, it is constructed from commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components and requires minimal assembly. Much of the work involves drilling holes in the two aluminum project boxes, which contain the control electronics and the oven itself. The cost of components is less than $200 (USD) per oven, which makes constructing multiple ovens affordable. In addition, the two-box design separates the high-temperature heater from the electronics, which keeps the electronics cool, prolonging the lifetime of these components.

Fabrication Assembly and Test of the Mars Science Laboratory Descent Stage Propulsion System

The Descent Stage Propulsion System (DSPS) is the most challenging and complex propulsion system ever built at JPL. Performance requirements, such as the entry Reaction Control System (RCS) requirements, and the terminal descent requirements (3300 N maximum thrust and approximately 835,000 N-s total impulse in less than a minute), required a large amount of propellant and a large number of components for a spacecraft that had to fit in a 4.5 meter aeroshell. The size and shape of the aeroshell, along with the envelope of the stowed rover, limited the configuration options for the Descent Stage structure. The configuration and mass constraints of the Descent Stage structure, along with performance requirements, drove the configuration of the DSPS. This paper will examine some of the challenges encountered and solutions developed during the fabrication, assembly, and test of the DSPS.

Re-assembly and test of COMB dipole magnet with STAR® wires

Fermilab is developing the Conductor on Molded Barrel (COMB) magnet technology that works well with round REBCO conductors. COMB-STAR-1 magnet based on STAR wire by AMPeers was fabricated and tested in liquid nitrogen in 2023. The magnet demonstrated >90 Ic retention in the coils (before/after winding). Even though the magnet was not originally designed for operation at lower than 77 K temperatures, it was decided to test it in liquid helium to: - check the instrumentation and the DAQ system; - check the ability to detect resistive transitions or quenches and to protect the magnet; - gather the information on possible magnet design chances and upgrades of the test facility for future testing of HTS magnets. The magnet was re-assembled with a larger iron yoke and the axial supports and tested in liquid helium in 2024 at Fermilab s Vertical Magnet Test Facility (VMTF). It was the first HTS magnet test at that facility ever.

Sensor Chip Assembly (SCA) Test Report

This report summarizes the measured performance for the Sensor Chip Assembly (SCA), which is identified in Table 1. The SCA architecture is a substrate-removed HgCdTe detector with an area of 4096x4096 pixels (with a reference pixel area of four pixels deep around all four sides, available to substitute corresponding image pixels) and a pixel pitch of 10 μm. This SCA has been tested at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC/NASA) Detector Characterization Laboratory (DCL). Teledyne (the vendor) classifies its detectors into different grades based on testing performed at its facility. The classification of this SCA and the tested dates are included in Table 1 below. The tests performed on this array are derived from the document WFIRST-PROC-09220_WFIRST-SCA-ATP_-.docx. A summary of the test parameters, requirements, and test results is presented in Table 2. The details of each test are subsequently described in the report. In the Summary (Table 2), SCA results are reported at an operating temperature of 95K, and 1.0 V bias voltage. In the detailed section of each test, the results for 90 K (1.0V bias voltage) and 95 K (0.5V bias voltage) are also reported. For all cases, the frame time used is 2.764 seconds. Reference pixel correction was applied to every raw frame.

Testing Gimbal Axes Before Complete Assembly

Early testing increases chances assembly will function well without expensive rework. Developed for antenna gimbals, test eliminates delay and costs ensued when fully assembled antenna fails because of excessive torque and friction in gimbal. Gimbal housing mounted above rotary table. Gimbal axis tested connected to torque transducer on table. With exception of special holder for gimbal housing, all of testing instruments commercially available items.

Re-Assembly and Test of a COMB Dipole Magnet With STAR Wires

Rare-Earth Barium Copper Oxide (REBCO) coated conductors are an attractive option for application in high field accelerator magnets due to their high critical field and the convenience of fabrication without heat treatment compared to some other superconductors. A small REBCO accelerator magnet was previously fabricated and tested in liquid nitrogen, demonstrating over 90% critical current retention in the coils. This paper describes the magnet re-assembly with a different support structure and its test in liquid helium at 1.8–4.5 K. The magnet quench history along with the instrumentation data is presented and discussed.

Thermal analysis of the FSP-1 fuel pin irradiation test

Thermal analysis of a pin from the FSP-1 fuels irradiation test has been completed. The purpose of the analysis was to provide predictions of fuel pin temperatures, determine the flow regime within the lithium annulus of the test assembly, and provide a standardized model for a consistent basis of comparison between pins within the test assembly. The calculations have predicted that the pin is operating at slightly above the test design temperatures and that the flow regime within the lithium annulus is a laminar buoyancy driven flow.

TESS Lens-Bezel Assembly Modal Testing

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) program, led by the Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) will be the first-ever spaceborne all-sky transit survey. MIT Lincoln Laboratory is responsible for the cameras, including the lens assemblies, detector assemblies, lens hoods, and camera mounts. TESS is scheduled to be launched in August of 2017 with the primary goal to detect small planets with bright host starts in the solar neighborhood, so that detailed characterizations of the planets and their atmospheres can be performed. The TESS payload consists of four identical cameras and a data handling unit. Each camera consists of a lens assembly with seven optical elements and a detector assembly with four charge-coupled devices (CCDs) including their associated electronics. The optical prescription requires that several of the lenses are in close proximity to a neighboring element. A finite element model (FEM) was developed to estimate the relative deflections between each lens-bezel assembly under launch loads to predict that there are adequate clearances preventing the lenses from making contact. Modal tests using non-contact response measurements were conducted to experimentally estimate the modal parameters of the lens-bezel assembly, and used to validate the initial FEM assumptions. Nonlinear seismic analysis of a reactor structure impact between core components

The seismic analysis of the FFTF-PIOTA (Fast Flux Test Facility-Postirradiation Open Test Assembly), subjected to a horizontal DBE (Design Base Earthquake) is presented. The PIOTA is the first in a set of open test assemblies to be designed for the FFTF. Employing the direct method of transient analysis, the governing differential equations describing the motion of the system are set up directly and are implicitly integrated numerically in time. A simple lumped-nass beam model of the FFTF which includes small clearances between core components is used as a "driver" for a fine mesh model of the PIOTA. The nonlinear forces due to the impact of the core components and their effect on the PIOTA are computed.

NASA Space Launch System Completes Green Run Testing, Begins Assembly

NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) Program is poised in 2021 to shift its focus to the launch site with the completion of its last major integrated hardware and software test. SLS is NASA’s evolvable super heavy-lift launch vehicle for deep space exploration. Using proven propulsion technologies, SLS will be the most powerful launch vehicle in the world. That capability translates not only into more mass and volume to destinations but also simplified payload design and mission operations and greater opportunity for mission success. These capabilities will be important for the Artemis program, NASA’s plan to return humans to the Moon to stay in a sustainable way in order to develop and test technologies and operations needed for human missions to Mars and other destinations. SLS will anchor the transportation leg of an innovative, sustainable program of lunar exploration with commercial and international partners as the first step of human exploration of deep space. While all major hardware and software efforts made significant progress in 2020 and 2021, the most visible was the Green Run test series of the Artemis I core stage conducted at NASA’s Stennis Space Center (SSC) on the B-2 test stand. The series validated core stage design, performance, workmanship, and readiness for shipment to NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) for final processing, integration and launch. The core stage provides the backbone for SLS’ main propulsion system, consisting of two five-segment solid rocket boosters and four RS-25 liquid hydrogen (LH2)/liquid oxygen (LOX) engines. SLS also includes an Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS) that will insert the Orion crew spacecraft into a lunar trajectory.

Assembly and Testing of Scintillator Tile Modules for the CMS High-Granularity Calorimeter Upgrade

The High-Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL), part of the upgrade to the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment, employs silicon and scintillator tile modules in the endcaps to maintain detector performance during the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) era, scheduled to operate from 2030 to 2040. The upgraded calorimeter will provide highly segmented three-dimensional imaging, energy measurements, and precise timing for particle shower reconstruction. Approximately half of the HGCal plastic scintillator tile modules (1,834 total) will be assembled at Fermilab using an automated pick-and-place (PnP) machine. Following assembly, each tile module undergoes quality control (QC) procedures such as electrical validation, thermal testing, and physics validation using cosmic rays. This poster/talk presents the QC procedures and results from the tile module production in 2026, demonstrating the performance and quality of the assembled tile modules.

Experiment Assembly and Testing in Hot Cell in Support of Advanced Fuels Irradiation Testing

Follow-on experimentation of irradiated nuclear fuel is critical to understanding fuel behavior at different stages of the fuel lifecycle. Transient experiments using fuel with high burnup can enlarge understanding of fuel fragmentation, relocation and dispersal under various reactor accident situations. Assembling experiments with such fuel requires remote operations.

Alignment, Assembly and Testing of High Energy X-Ray Optics

We are developing grazing-incidence x-ray imaging optics for a balloon-borne hard x-ray telescope (HERO). The HERO payload, scheduled for launch in May 2005, currently consists of 8 mirror modules each containing 12 mirror shells fabricated using electroform-nickel replication off super-polished cylindrical mandrels. An optical system developed for aligning and assembling the shells in the modules will be described. Sources for systematic errors associated with this process will be discussed and results from on-ground x-ray testing of each module will be presented.
