James Webb Space Telescope Initial Mid-Course Correction Monte Carlo Implementation using Task Parallelism

The James Webb Space Telescope will be launched into a highly elliptical orbit that does not possess sufficient energy to achieve a proper Sun-Earth L2 libration point orbit. Three mid-course correction (MCC) maneuvers are planned to rectify the energy deficit: MCC-1a, MCC-1b, and MCC-2. To validate the propellant budget and trajectory design methods, a set of Monte Carlo analyses that incorporate MCC maneuver modeling and execution are employed. The first analysis focuses on the effects of launch vehicle injection errors on the magnitude of MCC-1a. The second on the spread of potential V based on the performance of the propulsion system as applied to all three MCC maneuvers. The final highlights the slight, but notable, contribution of the attitude thrusters during each MCC maneuver. Given the possible variations in these three scenarios, the trajectory design methods are determined to be robust to errors in the modeling of the flight system.

Students authoring molecular case studies as a partial course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) for lab instruction

Understanding the relationship between protein structure and function is a core-learning goal in biochemistry. Students often struggle to visualize proteins as three-dimensional objects that interact with other molecules to affect its biochemical consequences. We describe here a partial course-based undergraduate research experiences that has students exploring protein structure and function hands-on while authoring a molecular case study intended for others to use.

An Atmospheric Aerosol Short Course for Early Career Scientists

The first Department of Energy (DOE) Environmental and Molecular Science Laboratory (EMSL)/Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) aerosol summer school was held July 15-19, 2019 at the EMSL user facility located at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The school set out to provide graduate students and early-career scientists an overview of atmospheric aerosol science and an introduction to the measurement techniques available through the EMSL and ARM user facilities to address current aerosol science issues. Instructors for the course were drawn from scientists from the EMSL (Laskin et al., 2016; China et al., 2018) and ARM facilities (McComiskey and Ferrare, 2016) as well as from the DOE Atmospheric System Research (ASR) program. Student support for the summer school was also jointly provided by EMSL, ARM, and ASR. The school spanned five days with each day covering a particular theme. 25 students from 21 institutions attended morning lectures on aerosol composition, properties, theory, measurements, and modeling. During afternoons, the students explored instruments that collect and analyze aerosol samples at EMSL and PNNL’s Atmospheric Measurements Laboratory. They also tested relevant computer modeling simulations and learned about NWChem, EMSL’s open-source computational chemistry software suite.

Aerial Data and Processed Models of Port Arthur Coastal Neighborhood and Pleasure Island Golf Course, June 2024

Our Co-design team is from the University of Texas, working on a Department of Energy-funded project focused on the Beaumont-Port Arthur area. As part of this project, we will be developing climate-resilient design solutions for areas of the region. More on www.caee.utexas.edu.We captured aerial photos in the Port Arthur Coastal Neighborhood Community and the Golf Course on Pleasure Island, Texas, in June 2024.Aerial photos taken were through DroneDeploy autonomous flight, and models were processed through the DroneDeploy engine as well. All aerial photos are in .JPG format and contained in zipped files for each area. The processed data package includes 3D models, geospatial data, mappings, and point clouds. Please be aware that DTM, Elevation toolbox, Point cloud, and Orthomosaic use EPSG: 6588. And 3D Model uses EPSG: 3857.For using these data:- The Adobe Suite gives you great software to open .Tif files.- You can use LASUtility (Windows), ESRI ArcGIS Pro (Windows), or Blaze3D (Windows, Linux) to open a LAS file and view the data it contains.- Open an .OBJ file with a large number of free and commercial applications. Some examples include Microsoft 3D Builder, Apple Preview, Blender, and Autodesk.- You may use ArcGIS, Merkaartor, Blender (with the Google Earth Importer plug-in), Global Mapper, and Marble to open .KML files.- The .tfw world file is a text file used to georeference the GeoTIFF raster images, like the orthomosaic and the DSM. You need suitable software like ArcView to open a .TFW file. This dataset provides researchers with sufficient geometric data and the status quo of the land surface at the locations mentioned above. This dataset could streamline researchers' decision-making processes and enhance the design as well.

A Hands-on Course on Intensified Membrane Processes for Sustainable Water Purification

The lack in process intensification (PI) training may be limiting processes to achieve sustainability goals. Furthermore, this project developed a hands-on course on intensified membrane processes to address knowledge gaps in PI. Bench-scale activities introduced concepts of membrane separation, operating engineering-scale modules provided a near-industrial experience, and simulation software allowed modeling and optimization of a process. Student evaluations showed that the combination of modeling, experimental, and peer-instruction work helped them understand the application of theoretical concepts.

LANL Charging Practices Course Number 18930

Because numerous federal agencies and outside organizations provide funding for hundreds of projects and programs, Los Alamos National Laboratory's system for charging for time and effort, and the purchase of materials, supplies, and services, is complex. As a LANL employee, you are responsible, both legally and ethically, for knowing and consistently following charging practice rules, complying with Laboratory financial policies, and understanding the consequences of improper charging. This course is designed to increase your understanding of an employee's responsibilities regarding charging practices at the Laboratory and help you charge time and labor and non-labor costs accurately. The training is required of all Laboratory workers except craft labor, who have separate training that is specific to how their effort is charged and collected. This training should take less than 20 minutes to complete.
