Spin-crossover complexes: Self-interaction correction vs density correction

Complexes containing a transition metal atom with a 3d 4 –3d 7 electron configuration typically have two low-lying, high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states. The adiabatic energy difference between these states, known as the spin-crossover energy, is small enough to pose a challenge even for electronic structure methods that are well known for their accuracy and reliability. In this work, we analyze the quality of electronic structure approximations for spin-crossover energies of iron complexes with four different ligands by comparing energies from self-consistent and post-self-consistent calculations for methods based on the random phase approximation and the Fermi–Löwdin self-interaction correction. Considering that Hartree–Fock densities were found by Song et al., J. Chem. Theory Comput. 14, 2304 (2018), to eliminate the density error to a large extent, and that the Hartree–Fock method and the Perdew–Zunger-type self-interaction correction share some physics, we compare the densities obtained with these methods to learn their resemblance. Here, we find that evaluating non-empirical exchange-correlation energy functionals on the corresponding self-interaction-corrected densities can mitigate the strong density errors and improves the accuracy of the adiabatic energy differences between HS and LS states.

Scaling functions for eigenstate entanglement crossovers in harmonic lattices

For quantum matter, eigenstate entanglement entropies obey an area law or log-area law at low energies and small subsystem sizes and cross over to volume laws for high energies and large subsystems. This transition is captured by crossover functions, which assume a universal scaling form in quantum critical regimes. We demonstrate this for the harmonic lattice model, which describes quantized lattice vibrations and is a regularization for free scalar field theories, modeling, e.g., spin-0 bosonic particles. In one dimension, the ground-state entanglement obeys a log-area law. For dimensions d ≥ 2, it displays area laws, even at criticality. The distribution of excited-state entanglement entropies is found to be sharply peaked around subsystem entropies of corresponding thermodynamic ensembles in accordance with the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. Numerically, we determine crossover scaling functions for the quantum critical regime of the model and do a large-deviation analysis. We show how infrared singularities of the system can be handled and how to access the thermodynamic limit using a perturbative trick for the covariance matrix. Eigenstates for quasi-free bosonic systems are not Gaussian. Here, we resolve this problem by considering appropriate squeezed states instead. For these, entanglement entropies can be evaluated efficiently.

Dimensional crossover in spin Hall oscillators

Auto-oscillations of magnetization driven by direct spin current have been previously observed in multiple quasi-zero-dimensional (0D) ferromagnetic systems such as nanomagnets and nanocontacts. Recently, it was shown that pure spin Hall current can excite coherent auto-oscillatory dynamics in quasi-one-dimensional (1D) ferromagnetic nanowires but not in quasi-two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic films. Here we study the 1D to 2D dimensional crossover of current-driven magnetization dynamics in wire-based Pt/Ni 80 Fe 20 bilayer spin Hall oscillators via varying the wire width. We find that increasing the wire width results in an increase of the number of excited auto-oscillatory modes accompanied by a decrease of the amplitude and coherence of each mode. We also observe a crossover from a hard to a soft onset of the auto-oscillations with increasing wire width. The amplitude of auto-oscillations rapidly decreases with increasing temperature suggesting that interactions of the phase-coherent auto-oscillatory modes with incoherent thermal magnons play an important role in suppression of the auto-oscillatory dynamics. Our measurements in this work set the upper limit on the dimensions of an individual spin Hall oscillator and elucidate the mechanisms leading to suppression of coherent auto-oscillations with increasing oscillator size.

Symmetry crossover in layered MPS 3 complexes (M=Mn, Fe, Ni) via near-field infrared spectroscopy

In this paper, we employ synchrotron-based near-field infrared spectroscopy to reveal the vibrational properties of bulk, few-sheet, and single-sheet members of the MPS 3 (M=Mn, Fe, Ni) family of materials and compare our findings with complementary lattice dynamics calculations. MnPS 3 and the Fe analog are similar in terms of their symmetry crossovers, from C2/ m to P $\bar{3}$1 m , as the monolayer is approached. These states differ as to the presence of a C 3 rotation around the metal center. On the other hand, NiPS 3 does not show a symmetry crossover, and the lack of a B u symmetry mode near 450 cm -1 suggests that C 3 rotational symmetry is already present, even in the bulk material. We discuss these findings in terms of local symmetry and temperature effects as well as the curious relationship between these symmetry transformations and those that take place under pressure.

Crossover between weak antilocalization and weak localization in few-layer W Te 2 : Role of electron-electron interactions

We report electron transport studies in an encapsulated few-layer WTe 2 at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. The magnetoconductance reveals a temperature-induced crossover between weak antilocalization and weak localization in the quantum diffusive regime. Here we show that the crossover clearly manifests coexistence and competition among several characteristic lengths, including the dephasing length, the spin-flip length, and the mean free path. In addition, low-temperature conductance increases logarithmically with the increase of temperature indicating an interplay of electron-electron interaction (EEI) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We demonstrate the existence and quantify the strengths of EEI and SOC which are considered to be responsible for gap opening in the quantum spin Hall state in WTe 2 at the monolayer limit.

Temperature-induced gradual polymorphic structural crossover in liquid indium, tin, and antimony

Temperature-induced polymorphic structural crossover in metallic liquid indium (In), tin (Sn), and antimony (Sb) is investigated by in situ high-energy x-ray diffraction and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The results demonstrate the existence of a temperature-induced reversible and gradual structural crossover in these three liquids, reflecting from both “static” structures, e.g., peak positions of the structure factor and pair distribution function, bond angle distribution, number of tetrahedra, cluster connection, free volume, and dynamical behaviors, including the relaxation time, diffusion coefficient, and non-Gaussian parameter. Further, the main difference from liquid In, Sn, to Sb is that not only the large-sized free volume but also the anharmonicity and the dynamical heterogeneity increase significantly with the appearance of strong covalent bonds. These findings will deepen the understanding of liquid structure and the liquid-liquid transition in metallic liquids.

Disorder driven crossover between anomalous Hall regimes in Fe 3 GaTe 2

The large anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) of the Fe 3 ⁢(Ge,Ga)⁢Te 2 compounds has attracted considerable attention. Here, we expose the intrinsic nature of the AHC in Fe 3 ⁢GaTe 2 crystals characterized by high conductivities, which show disorder-independent AHC with a pronounced value 𝜎$^{c}_{𝑥⁢𝑦}$≈ 420 Ω −1 ⁢cm −1 . In the low-conductivity regime, we observe the scaling relation 𝜎 𝑥⁢𝑦 ∝ 𝜎$^{1.6}_{𝑥⁢𝑥}$, which crosses over to 𝜎 𝑥⁢𝑦 ≃ 𝜎$^{c}_{𝑥⁢𝑦}$ as 𝜎 𝑥⁢𝑥 increases. Disorder in low-conductivity crystals is confirmed by the broadening of a first-order transition between ferromagnetism and the ferrimagnetic ground state. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we reveal that the dominant sources of Berry curvature are located a few hundred meV below the Fermi energy around the Γ point. Furthermore, Fe 3⁢ GaTe 2 clearly exposes the disorder-induced crossover among distinct AHC regimes, previously inferred from measurements on different ferromagnets located on either side of the crossover region.

Neutron stars with a crossover equation of state

The question of whether quark matter exists in neutron stars is a long standing one. Generally one finds that a first order phase transition from baryons to quarks softens the equation of state so much that the star would collapse into a black hole. We consider a crossover equation of state, similar to the crossover that is found in lattice QCD studies at finite temperature and zero or small baryon chemical potentials. Finally, we find that with reasonable parameters it may be possible to support neutron stars up to about 2.2 solar masses. In that case 1% to 10% of the pressure would be contributed by quark matter in the central core of the highest mass stars.

$\mathcal{g}$ modes of neutron stars with hadron-to-quark crossover transitions

Here we perform the first study of the principal core g-mode oscillation in hybrid stars containing quark matter, utilizing a crossover model for the hadron-to-quark transition inspired by lattice QCD. The ensuing results are compared with our recent findings of g-mode frequencies in hybrid stars with a first-order phase transition using Gibbs constructions. We find that models using Gibbs construction yield g-mode amplitudes and the associated gravitational energy radiated that dominate over those of the chosen crossover model owing to the distinct behaviors of the equilibrium and adiabatic sound speeds in the various models. Based on our results, we conclude that were g modes to be detected in upgraded LIGO and Virgo detectors it would indicate a first-order phase transition akin to a Gibbs construction.

Thickness-dependent polaron crossover in tellurene

Polarons, quasiparticles from electron-phonon coupling, are crucial for material properties including high-temperature superconductivity and colossal magnetoresistance. However, scarce studies have investigated polaron formation in low-dimensional materials with phonon polarity and electronic structure transitions. In this work, we studied polarons of tellurene, composed of chiral Te chains. The frequency and linewidth of the A 1 phonon, which becomes increasingly polar for thinner tellurene, change abruptly for thickness below 10 nanometers, where field-effect mobility drops rapidly. These phonon and transport signatures, combined with phonon polarity and band structure, suggest a crossover from large polarons in bulk tellurium to small polarons in few-layer tellurene. Effective field theory considering phonon renormalization in the small-polaron regime semiquantitatively reproduces the phonon hardening and broadening effects. This polaron crossover stems from the quasi–one-dimensional nature of tellurene, where modulation of interchain distance reduces dielectric screening and promotes electron-phonon coupling. Our work provides valuable insights into the influence of polarons on phononic, electronic, and structural properties in low-dimensional materials.

Topological kinetic crossover in a nanomagnet array

Ergodic kinetics, which are critical to equilibrium thermodynamics, can be constrained by a system’s topology. Here, we studied a model nanomagnetic array in which such constraints visibly affect the behavior of the magnetic moments. In this system, magnetic excitations connect into thermally active one-dimensional strings whose motion can be imaged in real time. At high temperatures, our data showed the merging, breaking, and reconnecting of strings, resulting in the system transitioning between topologically distinct configurations. Below a crossover temperature, the string motion is dominated by simple changes in length and shape. In this low-temperature regime, the system is energetically stable because of its inability to explore all possible topological configurations. This kinetic crossover suggests a generalizable conception of topologically broken ergodicity and limited equilibration.

Size and Charge Effects on Crossover of Flow Battery Reactants Evaluated by Quinone Permeabilities Through Nafion

Organic reactants are promising candidates for long-lifetime redox flow batteries, and synthetic chemistry unlocks a wide design space for new molecules. Minimizing crossover of these molecules through ion exchange membranes is one important design consideration, but the ways in which the crossover rate depends on the structure of the crossing species remain unclear. Here, we contribute a systematic evaluation of size- and charge-based effects on dilute-solution small molecule permeability through the Nafion NR212 cation exchange membrane. We found that increasing the magnitude of charge number z with the same sign as membrane fixed charges, achieved here by successive sulfonation of quinone redox cores, results in more than an order of magnitude permeability reduction per sulfonate. Size-based effects, understood by comparing the Stokes radii of the quinones studied, also reduces permeability with increasing effective molecule size, but doubling the effective size of the redox reactants resulted in a permeability decrease of less than a factor of three.

Performance and Durability Investigation of Thin, Low Crossover Proton Exchange Membranes for Water Electrolyzers

The goal of this project was to fabricate and study the performance and durability implications of thin, mechanically reinforced membranes containing gas recombination catalysts (GRCs) for advanced proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) systems. The thinner membranes, optimized for a PEMWE environment, dramatically reduced the proton transport resistance across the membrane, improving the overall efficiency of the PEMWE system. At the same time, the GRC technology was deployed to recombine crossover hydrogen from the cathode with oxygen from the anode to form water within the membrane. This reaction mitigated the buildup of hydrogen in the oxygen stream, ensuring safe operation of the PEMWE system. Capabilities to measure the gas crossover in both an ex-situ screening cell and in operando application testing were developed over the course of the project to track membrane progress and quantify deliverables. State of the art roll to roll manufacturing technologies were leveraged to fabricate the membranes on a commercial scale, where the membrane structure was precisely tuned and GRC distributed within the membrane structure.

Binary Neutron-Star Mergers with a Crossover Transition to Quark Matter

This paper summarizes recent work on the possible gravitational-wave signal from binary neutron-star mergers in which there is a crossover transition to quark matter. Although this is a small piece of a much more complicated problem, we discuss how the power spectral density function may reveal the presence of a crossover transition to quark matter.

Oceanic eddy variability measured by GEOS 3 altimeter crossover differences

Eddy statistics of sea height variations associated with dynamic ocean currents, gathered by GEOS 3 altimetry (25 cm), are discussed. Time variable flow is noted to be measureable using altimeter height and orbit information by means of three techniques: collinear tracks, where rms variability can be determined for mesoscale phenomena measured along parallel tracks; mean surfaces, using a 3-dimensional mapping of the sea surface for an accurate representation of the surface undulations; and crossover differences, such as between data tracks from GEOS and Seasat which have reduced ephemeris error over scales of a few thousand km. Mesoscale energetics have been found suitable for tracing meandering ocean currents by the crossover method. Possible sources of error are considered, including altimeter noise, orbit error, short wavelength continental shelf tides, etc., and it is determined that observations of mesoscale sea height appear to be limited only by uncertainties in the altimetry, which for Seasat was 5 cm over 60% of the world's oceans.

On correcting radial orbit errors for altimetric satellites using crossover analysis

A method is proposed for correcting radial orbit error in measurements of sea surface height using a satellite altimeter. Traditionally, the orbit error is modeled in terms of a Fourier series with the Fourier coefficients determined by minimizing the residual crossover difference in a least-squares sense. In this method an a priori constraint must be imposed to obtain a unique solution. It is shown that by using singular value decomposition, no such constraint is needed. This proposed method leaves the geographically dependent errors unchanged and makes only those corrections warranted by the information contained in crossover differences. Thus, the resultant ocean topography is free from any undue distortion which might be incurred by an a priori constraint. It is suggested that the method is useful for application to high-accuracy altimetric mission, because the orbit error can be reduced without compromising the accuracy of the measured mean ocean topography.

Because all the input and output circuits are waveguides, the network is especially useful for high power systems and millimeter wave applications. The crossover circuit exhibits a very low insertion loss and good isolation.

Recent Studies on Methanol Crossover in Liquid-Feed Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

In this work, the effects of methanol crossover and airflow rates on the cathode potential of an operating direct methanol fuel cell are explored. Techniques for quantifying methanol crossover in a fuel cell and for separating the electrical performance of each electrode in a fuel cell are discussed. The effect of methanol concentration on cathode potential has been determined to be significant. The cathode is found to be mass transfer limited when operating on low flow rate air and high concentrations of methanol. Improvements in cathode structure and operation at low methanol concentration have been shown to result in improved cell performance.
