Plasma Generator Using Spiral Conductors

A plasma generator includes a pair of identical spiraled electrical conductors separated by dielectric material. Both spiraled conductors have inductance and capacitance wherein, in the presence of a time-varying electromagnetic field, the spiraled conductors resonate to generate a harmonic electromagnetic field response. The spiraled conductors lie in parallel planes and partially overlap one another in a direction perpendicular to the parallel planes. The geometric centers of the spiraled conductors define endpoints of a line that is non-perpendicular with respect to the parallel planes. A voltage source coupled across the spiraled conductors applies a voltage sufficient to generate a plasma in at least a portion of the dielectric material.

Wireless System and Method for Collecting Motion and Non-Motion Related Data of a Rotating System

A wireless system for collecting data indicative of a tire's characteristics uses at least one open-circuit electrical conductor in a tire. The conductor is shaped such that it can store electrical and magnetic energy. In the presence of a time-varying magnetic field, the conductor resonates to generate a harmonic response having a frequency, amplitude and bandwidth. A magnetic field response recorder is used to (i) wirelessly transmit the time-varying magnetic field to the conductor, and (ii) wirelessly detect the harmonic response and the frequency, amplitude and bandwidth, associated therewith. The recorder is adapted to be positioned in a location that is fixed with respect to the tire as the tire rotates.

Wireless tamper detection sensor and sensing system

A wireless tamper detection sensor is defined by a perforated electrical conductor. The conductor is shaped to form a geometric pattern between first and second ends thereof such that the conductor defines an open-circuit that can store and transfer electrical and magnetic energy. The conductor resonates in the presence of a time-varying magnetic field to generate a harmonic response. The harmonic response changes when the conductor experiences a change in its geometric pattern due to severing of the conductor along at least a portion of the perforations. A magnetic field response recorder is used to wirelessly transmit the time-varying magnetic field and wirelessly detecting the conductor's harmonic response.

Electrical screening procedure for solid ionic conductors

An electrical screening method has been developed for preliminary evaluation of polycrystalline specimens of candidates for use as solid ionic conductive electrolytes in batteries. The procedure measures dielectric loss and capacitance, from which are calculated an ac conductivity attributed provisionally to ions and an activation energy for that conductivity. Electronic conductivity is directly measured. The screening procedure applied to sodium beta-alumina yielded acceptable values for conductivity and activation energy.

Strength-conductivity synergy via lean alloy design: A study on novel solid stir extrusion of an Al-2Cu-0.1 Nb-0.15Zr (~wt.%) alloy

Aluminum alloys find wide applications in power and transmission cables, and electrical conductors due to their advantageous properties of high electrical conductivity, and lower cost per unit. However, the lower tensile strength compared to copper poses a challenge for the mechanical stability of aluminum-based cables. In this study, we addressed this issue by adopting a process-based alloy design approach, creating a lean alloy with a dilute composition of Al-2Cu-0.1 Nb-0.15Zr (~wt.%). Here, the alloy was processed using a friction stir based novel SolidStir® (SSE) technique, followed by low-temperature aging. The resulting aluminum wire exhibited improved strength (240 MPa) while simultaneously enhancing electrical conductivity (64%IACS). The study employed computational simulations (Thermocalc) and experimental techniques (differential scanning calorimetry and transmission electron microscopy) to thoroughly investigate the microstructure. Microstructural examinations revealed that the precipitation kinetics in SSE and SSE+aged conditions played a significant role in enhancing strength and electrical conductivity. These findings demonstrate the successful achievement of high strength and high electrical conductivity in aluminum wire through a lean alloy design approach.

Electrical rotary joint apparatus for large space structures

A structural array and electrical rotary joint for transmitting an electrical power between large space structures having relative rotational movement is disclosed which includes large support framework structures which rotate relative to one another about a common axis of rotation. A rotary interface joint is defined between the structures. A cylindrical hub member is carried by one structure and a cylindrical hub member is carried by a support structure with a third hub member being concentrically within a fourth hub member for relative rotation. Tension connecting cables connect hub members with their associated outer structures whereby relative rotational movement between the structures is transmitted to the cylindrical hub members for unitary motion therewith. Electrical conductor brush members are carried by one hub and electrical contact rings are carried by another hub member in sliding electrical contact with the brushes for transmission of electrical power during relative rotational movement between the two support structures.

RCS of a coated circular waveguide terminated by a perfect conductor

The radar cross section (RCS) of a circular waveguide terminated by a perfect electric conductor is calculated by the geometrical theory of diffraction for the rim diffraction and by a physical optics approximation for the interior irradiation. The interior irradiation is generally more than 10 dB higher than the rim diffraction for a/lambda equal to or greater than 1 (a is the waveguide radius, lambda is the free-space wavelength). At low frequencies (a/lambda about 1), the interior irradiation can be significantly reduced over a broad range of incident angle if the interior waveguide wall is coated with a thin layer (1 percent of the radius) of lossy magnetic material. Our theoretical prediction is confirmed by measurements. At higher frequencies (a/lambda about 3), a thin layer of coating is effective for the case of near axial incidence, provided that a good transition of the TE(11) mode near the waveguide opening to the HE(11) mode inside the waveguide is made. A thicker layer of coating is required for the RCS reduction over wider incident angle.

Insulating Nanofluids and Solids to Upgrade our Large Aging Transformer Equipment (Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy Research Final Report)

This project developed a highly promising, minimally invasive pathway for transformers with up to double the thermal life that is achieved today. Thermal life is important because it is occasionally necessary to overload transformers in service and this overload raises the internal temperature, accelerating aging2. A seminal initial finding in the research was that a likely achievable increase in the thermal conductivity of the transformer paper could double the thermal life. Oil-impregnated paper is used to wrap the electrical conductors in a transformer to provide a good balance of electrical insulation and thermal conductivity. The novel approach to increase the thermal conductivity was to add micrometer boron nitride particles to the paper during manufacturing. This is encouraging because it provides benefits with minimal impact on the manufacturing processes of the paper or of a transformer.

Novel Materials Containing Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes Wrapped in Polymer Molecules

In this design, single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been coated in polymer molecules to create a new type of material that has low electrical conductivity, but still contains individual nanotubes, and small ropes of individual nanotubes, which are themselves good electrical conductors and serve as small conducting rods immersed in an electrically insulating matrix. The polymer is attached through weak chemical forces that are primarily non-covalent in nature, caused primarily through polarization rather than the sharing of valence electrons. Therefore, the electronic structure of the SWNT involved is substantially the same as that of free, individual (and small ropes of) SWNT. Their high conductivity makes the individual nanotubes extremely electrically polarizable, and materials containing these individual, highly polarizable molecules exhibit novel electrical properties including a high dielectric constant.

Implementation of Johnson Noise Thermometry into Radiation Hardened Electronics

The random motion of charge carriers in an electrical conductor is a function of its temperature. This phenomenon generates an electrical signal, referred to as Johnson noise, that is present in all analog signals. Conversely, the temperature dependence of the Johnson noise spectrum also enables a direct measurement of absolute temperature, which can provide a secondary measurement of temperature when quantified using sensors such as resistive temperature devices (RTDs) in a process called Johnson noise thermometry (JNT). For nuclear environments, this is of particular interest in correcting for RTDs signal drift caused by accumulation, transmutation, and displacement damage caused by neutron and gamma irradiation.

Charged-particle absorption by Io

The electrostatic field associated with the rotation of Jupiter, relative to the rest frame of Io, would be distorted if the satellite were an electrical conductor. An idealized two-dimensional model of the distorted electric-field configuration, in the limit of a perfectly conducting satellite or satellite ionosphere, has been constructed and used to trace the adiabatic guiding-center trajectories of energetic protons and electrons across Jupiter's magnetic field lines, which are taken as rectilinear. The adiabatic trajectories of very low-energy particles (cold plasma) are found to avoid the satellite and escape absorption. In the limit of very high particle energies, the adiabatic trajectories are undistorted, and absorption proceeds as if Io were an insulator. The interpolation between these limits is monotonic for protons, such that Io sweeps out a drift shell half as wide as the satellite for first invariants of the order of 1 GeV per gauss. The situation for electrons is more complicated, and no absorption from adiabatic trajectories is found at first invariants not exceeding 46 GeV per gauss. Electrons having first invariants of at least 50 GeV per gauss are typically swept out of drift shells wider than the satellite itself. However, electrons can impact only a portion of Io's exposed hemisphere for first invariants of 50-200 GeV per gauss. Thus, the particle-absorbing characteristics of an electrically conducting Jovian satellite are found to depend on both the species and the energy of the incident particle, and the satellite's particle-absorbing cross section differs systematically from its geometric cross section.

Apparatus and method for measuring the Seebeck coefficient and resistivity of materials

An apparatus for measuring the thermoelectric properties of materials under high pressure is described that includes a pair of force transmitting assemblies constructed of thermally and electrically conductive material positioned between the ram and anvil of a press. Each force transmitting assembly has a small diameter pressing portion for contacting a face of the sample so that the sample can be squeezed between them. Each assembly also includes a heat exchanger to maintain the sample face at a controlled temperature, and an electrical conductor to carry current generated by the sample. A sleeve of thermally and electrically insulative material closely surrounds the pressing portions of the two assemblies.
