Abstract Tin monochalcogenides SnS and SnSe, belonging to a family of Van der Waals crystals isoelectronic to black phosphorus, are known as environmentally friendly materials promising for thermoelectric conversion applications. However, they exhibit other desired functionalities, such as intrinsic linear dichroism of the optical and electronic properties originating from strongly anisotropic orthorhombic crystal structures. This property makes them perfect candidates for polarization‐sensitive photodetectors working in near‐infrared spectral range. A comprehensive study of the SnS and SnSe crystals is presented, performed by means of optical spectroscopy and photoemission spectroscopy, supported by ab initio calculations. The studies reveal the high sensitivity of the optical response of both materials to the incident light polarization, which is interpreted in terms of the electronic band dispersion and orbital composition of the electronic bands, dictating the selection rules. From the photoemission investigation the ionization potential, electron affinity and work function are determined, which are parameters crucial for the design of devices based on semiconductor heterostructures.

Using simulations and experiments, we propose a protocol for the programmable templated self-assembly of light-activated self-propelled particles. Additionally, we identify the scaling relations for the assembly's characteristic times.
The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of State and Community Energy Programs engaged the National Laboratory of the Rockies to assess the return on investment (ROI) of technical assistance (TA) programs that support state, local, and Tribal energy planning. Although TA delivers value through capacity building, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge transfer, these benefits are often intangible and challenging to monetize. This study reviews existing ROI frameworks and synthesizes the most relevant elements into a hybrid approach tailored to energy TA programs. The proposed framework integrates monetary and non-monetary outcomes through early logic model development, baseline data collection, and the use of proxies for intangible benefits. As a case study, this paper applies this approach to the Communities Local Energy Action Program (Communities LEAP), demonstrating how ROI can inform program design, data strategy, and performance assessment. Findings underscore that ROI should be applied selectively and planned from the outset to ensure data alignment and attribution accuracy. The framework offers TA practitioners a structured approach that can be leveraged for future programs to evaluate and communicate the multifaceted value of TA investments.

The macromolecular architecture of plant secondary cell walls governs wood's mechanical and biochemical properties, yet its natural intra-species variability remains poorly characterized. Here, we combined 13C solid-state NMR (ssNMR), multivariate statistical analysis, and molecular modeling to profile nanoscale structure across 13 genetically diverse Populus trichocarpa genotypes grown in 13C-enriched atmospheres. SsNMR-derived phenotypes spanning composition, structure, mobility, and inter-polymer proximities reveal a conserved architecture, with a subtle yet coordinated variation organizing into dominant structural and secondary mobility axes. A representative atomistic model captures these features and reproduces experimental metrics. Molecular dynamics simulations support a weak but consistent positive correlation between cellulose abundance and crystalline-like order, with interior cellulose chains enriched in tg (trans-gauche) conformations without expanding crystalline cores. Together, experiment and simulation reveal a genetically buffered, broadly conserved nanoscale architecture across genotypes, where subtle fine-tuning of cellulose bundling and matrix packing balances mechanical performance with biological function.
Abstract Stellar abundances for a large number of stars provide key information for the study of Galactic formation history. Large spectroscopic surveys such as the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) and LAMOST take median-to-low-resolution (R≲ 5000) spectra in the full optical wavelength range for millions of stars. However, the line-blending effect in these spectra causes great challenges for elemental abundance determination. Here we employDD-Payne, a data-driven method regularized by differential spectra from stellar physical models, to the DESI early data release spectra for stellar abundance determination. Our implementation delivers 15 labels, including effective temperatureT eff , surface gravity log g , microturbulence velocityv mic , and the abundances for 12 individual elements, namely C, N, O, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Ni. Given a spectral signal-to-noise ratio of 100 per pixel, the internal precisions of the label estimates are about 20 K forT eff , 0.05 dex for log g , and 0.05 dex for most elemental abundances. These results agree with the theoretical limits from the Crámer–Rao bound calculation within a factor of 2. The majority of the accreted halo stars contributed by the Gaia–Enceladus–Sausage are discernible from the disk and in situ halo populations in the resultant [Mg/Fe]–[Fe/H] and [Al/Fe]–[Fe/H] abundance spaces. We also provide distance and orbital parameters for the sample stars, which spread over a distance out to ∼100 kpc. The DESI sample has a significantly higher fraction of distant (or metal-poor) stars than the other existing spectroscopic surveys, making it a powerful data set for studying the Galactic outskirts. The catalog is publicly available.
The use of marginal lands for growing food has increased worldwide. Many of these lands are supplemented with soil amendments to enhance their productivity, but they may also introduce contaminants depending on their origin. The use of sediments dredged from commercial waterways as a soil amendment has increased in recent years. However, there is significant concern regarding their potential to negatively affect public health by transferring contaminants, like metals, to the food supply. This study examined the behavior, microbiome and physiology of rats fed corn grown on dredged sediments with rats fed commercial feed corn and related those metrics to kernel metal content. Metal content did not differ between kernels grown on dredged sediments and feed corn for most metals except iron which was greater in commercial feed corn. Although there is some variability by animal response, animals fed corn grown on dredged sediments had a gut microbial community that generally promoted anxiety-like behavior while animals fed feed corn had a gut microbial community that promoted a more typical response. These findings suggest the effect of corn grown on dredged sediments on public health is complex and highlights the need for further investigation.
This manuscript describes atomistic calculations of oxygen vacancy and interstitial migration in bixbyite structured lanthanide oxides. We examine two types of compounds, one in which only one type of lanthanide cation is present and a second class in which two lanthanides are present in a 3:1 ratio as dictated by the symmetry of the bixbyite crystal structure. Using temperature accelerated dynamics and the nudged elastic band method, we quantify the role of chemistry on the energy barriers for the most important pathways for both vacancy and interstitial migration. We then analyze the impact of these variations on the overall diffusivity of each defect, quantifying the contribution of each pathway using the theory of kinosons. We find that vacancy mobility can vary by as much as three orders of magnitude through changes in chemistry at 500 K. Changes in interstitial mobility are more modest but can still vary by an order of magnitude. This points to the ability to tune the mass transport characteristics of these compounds through appropriate choices in chemistry. We have also included supplementary information containing the atomic structures of the relevant pathways.
Abstract Molecular photoswitches have demonstrated potential for storing solar energy at the molecular level, with power densities comparable to commercial batteries and hydroelectric energy storage. However, development of efficient photoswitches is hindered by limitations in cyclability and optical properties of existing materials. We here demonstrate that certain limitations in photoswitches based on electrocyclizations stem from the issue of controlling competition between Woodward‐Hoffmann allowed and forbidden pathways. Our approach moves beyond the traditional view of activation barriers and reveals that second‐order saddle points are crucial in dictating the competition between disrotatory and conrotatory pathways. These insights suggest new opportunities to manipulate the competition between these pathways through geometric constraints, fundamentally altering the connectivity of the potential energy surface. Our study also emphasizes the necessity of multi‐reference methods and the need to conduct higher‐dimensional explorations for competing pathways beyond photoswitch design.
