Thermodynamic Data to 20,000 K For Monatomic Gases

This report contains standard-state thermodynamic functions for 50 gaseous atomic elements plus deuterium and electron gas, 51 singly ionized positive ions, and 36 singly ionized negative ions. The data were generated by the NASA Lewis computer program PAC97, a modified version of PAC91 reported in McBride and Gordon. This report is being published primarily to document part of the data currently being used in several NASA Lewis computer programs. The data are presented in tabular and graphical format and are also represented in the form of least-squares coefficients. The tables give the following data as functions of temperature : heat capacity, enthalpy, entropy Gibbs energy, enthalpy of formation, and equilibrium constant. A brief discussion and a comparison of calculated results are given for several models for calculating ideal thermodynamic data for monatomic gases.

Investigation of structural effects of aromatic compounds on sooting tendency with mechanistic insight into ethylphenol isomers

Small aromatic molecules with oxygen-containing functional groups are a promising class of fuel additives, as they can be readily sourced from depolymerized lignin. These oxygenated aromatic compounds (OACs) show a lower sooting tendency than aromatic hydrocarbons, but OACs having alkyl groups such as ethylphenol show a higher sooting tendency than other OACs such as phenol and anisole, despite the oxygen moiety. In this study, we investigate the relationship between chemical structure and soot precursor formation to explain observed differences in the sooting tendency of OACs and to gain insight into how alkyl or oxygenated substituents on the aromatic ring affect soot precursor formation. The weakest bond for 15 aromatic compounds was identified and cleavage of these bonds was shown to generate either benzyl or phenoxy radicals. A linear relationship between standard enthalpy of formation (ΔH f o ) of these radicals and the yield sooting index (YSI) was found, and thus ΔH f ° can be applied as a metric to estimate YSIs of various aromatic compounds; higher ΔH f o of a radical indicates an increase in the radical reactivity and leads to more soot precursor formation. Flow reactor experiments were performed for 2-ethylphenol and 3-ethylphenol to elucidate how ortho and meta substitution effects the sooting tendency. Soot precursors were identified from the experiment and their formation pathways were investigated computationally. 2-ethylphenol produces more oxygenated products than 3-ethylphenol since the ortho position has increased resonance stabilization of radical intermediates, which leads to lower YSI. Overall, these results further inform the selection of potential biomass-derived fuel blendstocks that have favorable sooting tendencies.

Hydrothermal solution calorimetry in acidic aqueous solutions and revisiting the standard partial molal thermodynamic properties of Nd 3+ from 25 to 300 °C

The mobility of rare earth elements (REE) can be predicted in aqueous fluids using geochemical modeling but the accuracy of these models strongly depends on the availability of robust thermodynamic properties for the REE aqueous species. The REE 3+ aqua ions are important in the derivation of the formation constants of all the major REE complexes including the chloride, sulfate, and fluoride species which predominate in many hydrothermal-magmatic systems. However, the thermodynamic properties of the REE 3+ aqua ions are still commonly derived from the Helgeson-Kirkham-Flowers (HKF) equation of state parameters tabulated several decades ago. The standard state thermodynamic properties at reference conditions (25 °C and 1bar) and their extrapolations to high temperature need to be verified, if not revised, based on hydrothermal experiments. In this study, the enthalpy of solution was measured for synthetic Nd hydroxide from 25 to 150 ºC to retrieve the standard partial molal thermodynamic properties of Nd 3+ as a function of temperature. The experiments were conducted in aqueous perchloric acid based solutions with starting pH of 2 and varying ionic strength (0.01 to 0.09 mol/kg NaClO 4 ). The standard partial molal enthalpy of formation (Δ f H°) of Nd 3+ derived from the experimental study displays differences of up to 10 kJ/mol compared to the enthalpy values derived from the HKF equation of state in the studied temperature range. These inaccuracies are resolved by adjusting the standard partial molal Gibbs energy of formation (Δ f G°) of Nd 3+ at 25 °C and 1 bar from -672.0 to -679.7 kJ/mol. The heat capacity function (C p °) derived between 25 and 150 ºC can be described by: C p ° = a 0 + a 1 ·T + a 2 ·T -2 , with a 0 = 1256, a 1 = -2.68, a 2 = -55.56·10 6 and T in Kelvin. A set of recommended thermodynamic properties is provided for the Nd 3+ aqua ions and corrections are provided for the chloride and fluoride species to remain internally consistent with the experimentally derived properties. These results allow predicting accurately the solubility of monazite between 25 and 300 ºC. Before these corrections, the properties for the Nd 3+ aqua ions derived from the HKF parameters resulted in up to ~1.5 orders of magnitude lower monazite solubility than determined experimentally. Here, a revision of the REE +3 aqua ions properties is necessary to accurately predict the mobility of REE in hydrothermal acidic solutions.

Chapmanite [Fe 2 Sb(Si 2 O 5 )O 3 (OH)]: thermodynamic properties and formation in low-temperature environments

Abstract. of synthetic Sb 2 O 5 , MgSb 2 O 6 (analogue of the mineral byströmite), Mg[Sb(OH) 6 ] 2 ∙6H 2 O (brandholzite), and natural chapmanite [(Fe 1.88 Al 0.12 )Sb(Si 2 O 5 )O 3 (OH)]. Enthalpies of reactions, including formation enthalpies, were evaluated using reference compounds Sb, Sb 2 O 3 , Sb 2 O 5 , and other phases, with high-temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry in lead borate and sodium molybdate solvents. Heat capacity and entropy were determined by relaxation and differential scanning calorimetry. The best set of Δ f H o (kJ mol -1 ) and S o (J mol -1 K -1 ) is byströmite -1733.0±3.6, 139.3±1.0; brandholzite -5243.1±3.6, 571.0±4.0; and chapmanite -3164.9±4.7, 305.1±2.1. The data for chapmanite give Δ f G o of -2973.6±4.7 kJ mol -1 and log K=-17.10 for the dissolution reaction (Fe 1.88 Al 0.12 )Sb(Si 2 O 5 )O 3 (OH) + 6H + → 1.88Fe 3+ + 0.12Al 3+ + 2SiO$_2^0$ + Sb(OH)$_3^0$ + 2H 2 O. Analysis of the data showed that chapmanite is finely balanced in terms of its stability with schafarzikite (FeSb 2 O 4 ) and tripuhyite (FeSbO 4 ) under a specific, narrow range of conditions when both aqueous Fe(III) and Sb(III) are abundant. In such a model, chapmanite is metastable by a narrow margin but could be stabilized by high SiO$_2^0$(aq) activities. Natural assemblages of chapmanite commonly contain abundant amorphous silica, suggesting that this mechanism may be indeed responsible for the formation of chapmanite. Chapmanite probably forms during low-temperature hydrothermal overprint of pre-existing Sb ores under moderately reducing conditions; the slightly elevated temperatures may help to overcome the kinetic barrier for its crystallization. During weathering, sheet silicates may adsorb Sb 3+ in tridentate hexanuclear fashion, thus exposing their chapmanite-like surfaces to the surrounding aqueous environment. Formation of chapmanite, as many other sheet silicates, under ambient conditions, is unlikely.

Aqueous spray-drying synthesis of alluaudite Na 2+2x Fe 2–x (SO 4 ) 3 sodium insertion material: studies of electrochemical activity, thermodynamic stability, and humidity-induced phase transition

In pursuit of high-energy density sodium insertion materials, polyanionic frameworks can be designed with tuneable high-voltage operation stemming from inductive effect. Alluaudite Na 2 Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 polysulfate forms one such earth-abundant compound registering the highest Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox potential (ca. 3.8 V vs. Na/Na + ). While this SO 4 -based system exhibits high voltage operation, it is prone to thermal decomposition and moisture attack leading to hydrated derivatives, making its synthesis cumbersome. Also, the Na–Fe–S–O quaternary system is rich with (anhydrous to hydrated) phase transitions. Herein, we demonstrate scalable aqueous-based spray drying synthesis of alluaudite Na 2+2x Fe 2–x (SO 4 ) 3 sodium insertion material involving the formation of bloedite Na 2 Fe(SO 4 ) 2 ·4H 2 O as an intermediate phase. Moreover, a reversible phase transition from alluaudite to bloedite under controlled conditions of temperature and relative humidity is reported for the first time. Thermochemistry measurements revealed the enthalpies of formation (ΔH° f ) of alluaudite and bloedite are exothermic. Hydrated bloedite (ΔH° f = –117.16 ± 1.10 kJ/mol) was found to be significantly more energetically stable than anhydrous alluaudite (ΔH° f = –11.76 ± 1.25 kJ/mol). The calorimetric data support the observed synthesis and transformation (hydration-dehydration) pathways. Spray drying route led to spherical morphology delivering capacity ~80 mAh/g. Spray drying can be extended for rapid economic synthesis of sulfate class of battery materials.

Energetics of hydroxylbastnäsite solid solutions, La 1-$\chi$ Nd $\chi$ CO 3 OH

Bastnäsites (LnCO 3 (F,OH)) are a group of common rare earth elements (REE)-bearing minerals and are one of the primary global sources of REE. Due to the chemical similarities among REE, bastnӓsites tend to occur as solid solutions instead of end members in REE containing ores. To better understand the processes and the mechanisms of formation of such deposits, it is essential to determine the thermodynamic properties of bastnӓsites, including hydroxylbastnӓsite (LnCO 3 OH) solid solutions. In this work, we performed detailed structural and calorimetric investigations on synthetic hexagonal La–Nd hydroxylbastnӓsite (La 1-$\chi$ NdCO 3 OH, $\chi$ = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) solid solutions. X-ray diffraction confirms the crystal structure of the solid solution series in the $\ P$6 space group, and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis reveals local bonding environments characterized by three different types of 9-coordinated metal-oxygen polyhedra. Unit cell parameters of La1–xNdxCO3OH exhibit a nearly linear relation with the Nd content x, suggesting a random distribution of La and Nd in the structure. Their standard enthalpies of formation (Δ$\ H$° f ) were determined by high temperature oxide melt drop solution calorimetry, from which the enthalpies of mixing (Δ$\ H$ mix ) were derived. The Δ$\ H$ mix can be fitted by a regular solution model with an interaction parameter of 12.58 ± 0.16 kJ/mol, suggesting enthalpic metastability of La1–xNdxCO3OH relative to the two endmembers. Combining entropy and enthalpy, we further estimated the Gibbs free energies of mixing (Δ$\ G$ mix ) at relevant temperatures, revealing favorable temperatures under which the intermediate La 1-$\chi$ NdCO 3 OH phases can be stabilized. Such entropy-driven stabilization, as is consistent with our geochemical modeling results, may explain the enhancement of thermal stability of the solid solutions in nature. Additionally, the temperature range constrained from this study may be used to estimate the thermal history of REE bastnӓsite deposit.

Experimental Investigation of Thermodynamic Stabilization in Boron Imidazolate Frameworks (BIFs) Synthesized by Mechanochemistry

This study experimentally explores the energetics for the formation of boron–imidazolate frameworks (BIFs), which are synthesized by mechanochemistry. The topologically similar frameworks employ the same tetratopic linker based on tetrakis(imidazolyl)boric acid but differ in the monovalent cation metal nodes. This permits assessment of the stabilizing effect of metal nodes in frameworks with sodalite (SOD) and diamondoid (dia) topologies. The enthalpy of formation from endmembers (metal oxide and linker), which define thermodynamic stability of the structures, has been determined by use of acid solution calorimetry. The results show that heavier metal atoms in the node promote greater energetic stabilization of denser structures. Overall, in BIFs the relation between cation descriptors (ionic radius and electronegativity) and thermodynamic stability depends on framework topology. Thermodynamic stability increases with the metallic character of the cation employed as the metal node, independent of the framework topology. In conclusion, the results suggest unifying aspects for thermodynamic stabilization across MOF systems.

Unraveling the formation mechanism of NaCoPO 4 polymorphs

Phosphate compounds are one of the attractive classes of cathodes for their potential application in rechargeable Na-ion batteries (NIBs) due to their high insertion voltages and stabilities. Unlike olivine-LiMPO 4 (M = Fe, Mn, Co, Ni) cathodes, maricite-NaMPO 4 phases are electrochemically inactive due to lack of sodium diffusion channels. Interestingly, cobalt bearing compounds exhibit rich polymorphism (α-, β-, ABW- and Red-NaCoPO 4 ). However, the preparation of NaCoPO 4 single phases is challenging due to their closer enthalpies of formation. In this study, we have attempted to understand the formation mechanism of NaCoPO 4 polymorphs during solid state reaction using two different cobalt precursors (Co(OH) 2 and CoCO 3 ). The temperature dependent in-situ powder X-ray Diffraction (PXRD) studies showed the formation of β-NaCoPO 4 at a much lower temperature compared to the one reported in the literature, whilst we have discovered a new high temperature polymorph gamma-NaCoPO 4 . The choice of precursors was also found to be important for the preparation of ABW-NaCoPO 4 , i.e., the rapid decomposition of Co(OH) 2 has resulted in its formation whilst the high stability of CoCO 3 prohibited the same. The order of the formation of the NaCoPO 4 polymorphs during heating was found to be ABW→β→α →$\gamma$. During normal cooling, gamma-NaCoPO 4 transformed primarily into alpha-polymorph whilst quenching in liquid N-2 resulted in the formation of β-NaCoPO 4 The as-synthesized beta- and ABW-NaCoPO 4 phases exhibited high sodium (de)-intercalation voltages (similar to 4.2 and 4.5 V vs. Na + /Na 0 , respectively), albeit with limited reversible capacities. This study is expected to open new avenues to harvest metastable polymorphs based on other transition metals (Fe, Mn and Ni).

Formation kinetics and thermodynamic stability of the Aurivillius compounds in Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 –BiFeO 3 system

Abstract The Aurivillius compounds in the Bi 2 O 3 –Fe 2 O 3 –TiO 2 system, combining ferroelectric, semiconducting, and ferromagnetic properties, have attracted particular interest. Formation kinetics and thermodynamic stability are the fundamental knowledge needed for modeling and predicting the temporal microstructure and property evolution during materials processing but have not yet been addressed by quantitative experimental measurement. This article focuses on the Bi n +1 Fe n –3 Ti 3 O 3 n +3 Aurivillius compounds on the Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 –BiFeO 3 tie‐line to elucidate the mechanisms and thermodynamic controls responsible for phase formation of compounds with various perovskite‐like layers. Five high‐purity Aurivillius compounds Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 , Bi 5 FeTi 3 O 15 , Bi 6 Fe 2 Ti 3 O 18 , Bi 7 Fe 3 Ti 3 O 21 , and Bi 8 Fe 4 Ti 3 O 24 with integer n = 3–7 values were synthesized and their phase transformation properties and enthalpies of formation were studied by X‐ray diffraction in situ, high temperature differential scanning calorimetry, and high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry. Thermodynamic stability of the compounds decreases with increasing n , and formation kinetics gradually slow down, demonstrating the inherent difficulty to synthesize pure Aurivillius compounds with n larger than 8. This difficulty was confirmed by an impurity phase coexisting with Bi 9 Fe 5 Ti 3 O 27 .

Formation of the {gamma}ʹʹʹ-Ni2(Cr, Mo, W) phase during a two-step aging heat treatment in HAYNES® 244® Alloy

Precipitation hardening is the dominant method of achieving high strength in most Ni-based superalloys. The formation of nanoscale precipitates during thermal exposure is often studied to determine the optimal methods of attaining high strength. The commercial Ni-based superalloy, HAYNES® 244® alloy, is strengthened through a novel -Ni2(Cr, Mo, W) intermetallic phase that forms during a two-step aging cycle. The precipitation kinetics of this intermetallic phase are sluggish for single-step aging in comparison to the γʹ phase in precipitation-strengthened Ni-based alloys, but a two-step aging treatment has shown to reliably harden the alloy and improve high-temperature properties compared to a single-step aging heat treatment. To investigate the formation and coarsening of this phase, heat-treated samples of the 244 alloy were analyzed with high-energy in situ and ex situ X-ray techniques such as small angle X-ray scattering and wide angle X-ray scattering as well as Vickers micro-hardness, electron microscopy, and atom probe tomography. The relationship between hardness, aging parameters, and microstructure evolution is discussed. The enthalpy of formation and precipitate solvus temperature were determined with high-temperature differential scanning calorimetry and dilatometry analysis.

Formation and energetics of amorphous rare earth (RE) carbonates in the RE 2 O 3 –CO 2 –H 2 O system

Amorphous materials are of interest in the genesis of crystalline solids. They are often the first to precipitate from supersaturated solutions and are in the nanometer size range, transforming into a nanocrystalline metastable phase, and then to thermodynamically stable phases. One must seek knowledge of the composition, structure, thermodynamics, kinetics, and reaction pathways that relate the amorphous and crystalline phases. The subject of this study is the amorphous phases in the system RE 2 O 3 -CO 2 –H 2 O (RE- La, Nd, Dy,Yb). They were synthesized via direct precipitation and urea hydrolysis, and characterized by powder XRD, DTA with mass spectrometric analysis of the evolved gases. Phases have the non-stoichiometric composition RE 2 O 3 ·xCO 2 ·yH 2 O (1 < x < 3, 3 < y <7), which is different from that of crystalline simple carbonates and hydroxycarbonates. Thus we consider them to be amorphous precursors, rather than amorphous carbonates. High temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry in molten sodium molybdate solvent was used to derive their enthalpies of formation from oxides and elements. Increase of energetic stability per mole of RE 2 O 3 compounds occurs in the order: RE 2 O 3 → 2RE(OH)3→ 2REO(OH) → RE 2 O 2 CO 3 → Amorphous precursor → 2(REOHCO 3 ) → RE 2 (CO 3 ) 3 ·yH 2 O. We calculated the enthalpies of possible transformations of amorphous precursors to crystalline phases and conclude that thermodynamics determines the dependence of the crystallizing products on the temperature and partial pressure of CO 2 and H 2 O. Amorphous precursors are clearly intermediate in the synthesis, and ternary phases containing both H 2 O and CO 2 compete with each other in terms of thermodynamic stability. The energy landscape obtained here will allow one to directly synthesize specific products and control their functionality.

Role of Anions in Stabilizing the [Zn–Al] Layered Double Hydroxides: A Thermodynamic Study

Here, room-temperature acid solution calorimetry, high-temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry, and low-temperature heat capacity measurements were employed to calculate the thermodynamic stabilities of the [Zn–Al–X] layered double hydroxides (LDH) containing different anions (X = Cl – , CO 3 2– , and SO 4 2– ). Cryogenic heat capacity measurements demonstrated a Schottky-type anomaly in the heat capacity of all three LDHs below 11 K. This anomaly is attributed to the tunneling of protons between adjacent oxygen atoms in the LDH interlayer as this creates an energy system similar to a two-level system modeled with a Schottky term. These heat capacity measurements were also used to determine vibrational entropies which, when combined with configurational entropies, provide standard entropies of these LDHs. Enthalpies of formation of LDHs from binary components were determined and combined with the entropies of formation to calculate Gibbs free energies. Based on these values, the order of stability is [Zn–Al–SO 4 ] > [Zn–Al–CO 3 ] > [Zn–Al–Cl]. This trend results from a combination of the interlayer spacing, amount of water in the interlayer, interactions among the interlayer species, and interactions between the metal hydroxide layer and the interlayer.

Complex Formation and Dissociation Dynamics on Amorphous Silica Surfaces

Benzene complex formation and dissociation dynamics with silanols on the amorphous silica surfaces of nanoporous SiO 2 , from a benzene/carbon tetrachloride solution, were measured by the growth of off-diagonal peaks in the two dimensional infrared (2D IR) chemical exchange spectrum of the isolated Si-OD stretch. The presence of two types of isolated silanols, referred to as type I and II, was revealed, with dissociation time constants of 82 ps and 4.0 ps for type I and II complexes, respectively. The type I silanols are associated with the main IR absorption feature in the Si-OD stretching region, while the type II silanols give rise to a broader shoulder to lower frequency. Polarization selective pump-probe (PSPP) measurements provided the vibrational lifetimes and orientational relaxation rates of the two silanols in the CCl 4 (free) and benzene (complex) environments. The type II silanols constitute roughly 30% of the isolated silanol population and exhibit a substantially faster rate of vibrational relaxation, making the type I dynamics the dominant contribution to the PSPP and 2D IR signals. From the measured dissociation times, the enthalpies of formation for the two surface complexes were obtained; the formation of the type I complex being significantly more exothermic. Furthermore, as the type II site is preferentially removed from the amorphous silica surface with increasing activation temperature, the results provide a reasonable explanation for the increased exothermicity of benzene adsorption on silica with increasing activation temperature in previous calorimetry experiments.

Thermochemistry of Layered and Two-Dimensional Niobium Carbo-Chalcogenides

Two-dimensional transition metal carbo-chalcogenides (TMCCs) represent a novel class of layered materials with tunable electronic structures and high chemical versatility, making them promising candidates for energy and environmental applications. In this work, the structural and thermochemical properties of a series of TMCCs are investigated. High-temperature oxidative solution calorimetry, conducted at 800 °C in molten sodium molybdate (3Na2O·4MoO3), was used to determine the enthalpies of oxidation and formation from the elements at 25 °C, enabling a comprehensive thermodynamic assessment. Comparison of these enthalpies reveals distinct stability trends across the series. Cu0.67Nb2S2C exhibits the most exothermic oxidation enthalpy, indicating a strong thermodynamic driving force for oxidation and reduced resistance to oxidative degradation. Its positive enthalpy of formation from the elements suggests lower thermodynamic stabilization relative to the other compositions, consistent with the energetic influence of Cu and residual Fe within the Nb–S–C framework. In contrast, delaminated Nb2S2C exhibits poor oxidative stability but a highly exothermic enthalpy of formation, consistent with a defect-rich, metastable structural state rather than enhanced lattice stability. These findings establish correlations between crystal structure and energetic stability, providing insights into the design of robust TMCC-based materials for advanced energy and environmental technologies.

Calorimetric Study of Functionalized Uranyl Peroxide Nanoclusters and Their Monomeric Building Block

The description of the energy landscape of polyoxometalates (POMs) enriches our understanding of their solution behavior through quantitative information that can be used to predict their existence, stability, and properties. Herein, we report thermodynamic values that describe the energy landscape of four uranyl peroxide nanoclusters (UPCs) (LiRb–U@U 24 , LiNa–U 24 Pp 12 , NaK–U 24 Pp 12 , and U 60 Ox 30 ) and a building block of UPCs, lithium uranyl triperoxide monomer (Li–UT). Furthermore, the results reveal relationships between the affinity of counter cations and the anionic uranyl peroxide units, enthalpy of dissolution, as well as enthalpy of crystallization and cluster solubility. Additionally, the calorimetric measurements of Li–UT allowed us to calculate a favorable enthalpy of formation of Li–U 24 and Li–U 28 from their monomeric units.

Primary solidification of ternary compounds in Al-rich Al–Ce–Mn alloys

Primary solidification of ternary compounds Al 20 Mn 2 Ce and Al 10 Mn 2 Ce were analyzed through the coupling of the thermodynamic modeling and classic nucleation theory. Thermodynamic models of Al 20 Mn 2 Ce and Al 10 Mn 2 Ce were developed using the CALPHAD approach based on first-principles calculated enthalpy of formation and experimental data obtained from this work and the literature. The analysis suggested that despite the larger thermodynamic driving force for nucleation of Al 10 Mn 2 Ce, nucleation is preferred for the Al 20 Mn 2 Ce phase in the highly undercooled liquid due to its smaller interfacial energy. Therefore, manufacturing methods with rapid cooling rates will favor primary solidification of Al 20 Mn 2 Ce for Al-rich Al–Ce–Mn alloys.

IMPROVING THE ACCURACY OF COMPOSITE METHODS: A G4MP2 METHOD WITH G4-LIKE ACCURACY AND IMPLICATIONS FOR MACHINE LEARNING

G4MP2 theory has proven to be a reliable and accurate quantum chemical composite method for the calculation of molecular energies using an approximation based on second-order perturbation theory to lower computational costs compared to G4 theory. However, it has been found to have significantly increased errors when applied to larger organic molecules with 10 or more nonhydrogen atoms. We report here on an investigation of the cause of the failure of G4MP2 theory for such larger molecules. One source of error is found to be the "higher-level correction (HLC)", which is meant to correct for deficiencies in correlation contributions to the calculated energies. This is because the HLC assumes that the contribution is independent of the element and the type of bonding involved, both of which become more important with larger molecules. We address this problem by adding an atom-specific correction, dependent on atom type but not bond type, to the higher-level correction. We find that a G4MP2 method that incorporates this modification of the higher-level correction, referred to as G4MP2A, becomes as accurate as G4 theory (for computing enthalpies of formation) for a test set of molecules with less than 10 nonhydrogen atoms as well as a set with 10-14 such atoms, the set of molecules considered here, with a much lower computational cost. The G4MP2A method is also found to significantly improve ionization potentials and electron affinities. Finally, we implemented the G4MP2A energies in a machine learning method to predict molecular energies.
