Generation of random hypersurfaces.

A technique to generate multidimensional random hypersurfaces with given statistical properties numerically on a digital computer is discussed in this paper. The technique is based on the linear filter theory. Using this technique, two-dimensional random surfaces are generated to illustrate the procedure. Statistics of these two-dimensional random surfaces are presented. Possible applications of these random surfaces in various physical problems are discussed.

Development of a magnetic acquisition and attitude control system for spinning rocket payloads

An attitude control system capable of pointing the roll principle axis of a spinning payload to within one degree of the magnetic field vector was flown successfully in 1981-82 aboard three Black Brant X payloads and one Terrier Malemute payload, and additional flights with the system have been requested. Using a filtered linear combination of signals provided by a single-axis rate gyro and a two-axis magnetometer, and control actuation from two cold-gas thrusters, the system can be assembled from standard rocket components and fitted to any payload size.

Optimal processing of satellite-derived magnetic anomaly data

It is shown how the concept of the power spectrum can be extended to two-dimensional spatial power spectra and how it can be used in determining optimal data processing methods for satellite-derived magnetic anomaly data and planning missions to obtain such data. The analysis techniques are applied to the data set and data-processing procedure described by Mayhew et al. (1980), a study that treats magnetic anomaly data for Australia and the surrounding ocean obtained by the polar orbit POGO series satellites. It is shown that the data-processing method used by Mayhew et al. is approximately equivalent to an invariant two-dimensional linear filter and that it is reasonably close to optimal with respect to accuracy, although some possible improvements are suggested. However, as is usual when filtering data, some real 'signal' is unavoidably removed along with the 'noise' resulting in errors that can be quite large. A method for reducing these errors by using additional data from a medium inclination orbit satellite (for example, 60 deg inclination) is proposed.

Flight-test results using nonlinear control with the F-8C digital fly-by-wire aircraft

The design and operation of the cooperative advanced digital research experiment (CADRE) to develop nonlinear pitch flight control algorithms is described, and the results of an in-flight evaluation using the F-8C digital fly-by-wire (DFBW) research aircraft are presented. The CADRE controller is described, including the initial filter, linear command prefilter, nonlinear command prefilter, and gain scheduling. The variable-integral control-to-optimize response of the controller is considered, and CADRE parameter combinations are addressed. The remotely-augmented-vehicle interface used in the DFBW aircraft experiment is discussed. The distanct-tracking and close-formation tracking evaluation tasks for the aircraft are described along with evaluation configurations, and the test results are presented and discussed. The latter indicate that a nonlinear adaptive controller is a feasible control system technique for the fighter tracking task.

Always-Convergent Iterative Noise Removal and Deconvolution for Image Data

Linear filtering techniques currently used for the restoration of noisy, blurred or otherwise degraded image data are discussed and new techniques related to the iterative techniques of Morrison and van Cittert are developed and implemented. Programs written for the implementation are discussed in the appendices. It is shown that the new techniques are convergent for any system response function, and they are applied to the task of restoring a severely blurred image.

Non-linear identification of a squeeze-film damper

Described is an experimental study to identify the damping laws associated with a squeeze-film vibration damper. This is achieved by using a non-linear filtering algorithm to process displacement responses of the damper ring to synchronous excitation and thus to estimate the parameters in an nth-power velocity model. The experimental facility is described in detail and a representative selection of results is included. The identified models are validated through the prediction of damper-ring orbits and comparison with observed responses.

Study of a co-designed decision feedback equalizer, deinterleaver, and decoder

A technique that promises better quality data from band limited channels at lower received power in digital transmission systems is presented. Data transmission, in such systems often suffers from intersymbol interference (ISI) and noise. Two separate techniques, channel coding and equalization, have caused considerable advances in the state of communication systems and both concern themselves with removing the undesired effects of a communication channel. Equalizers mitigate the ISI whereas coding schemes are used to incorporate error-correction. In the past, most of the research in these two areas has been carried out separately. However, the individual techniques have strengths and weaknesses that are complementary in many applications: an integrated approach realizes gains in excess to that of a simple juxtaposition. Coding schemes have been successfully used in cascade with linear equalizers which in the absence of ISI provide excellent performance. However, when both ISI and the noise level are relatively high, nonlinear receivers like the decision feedback equalizer (DFE) perform better. The DFE has its drawbacks: it suffers from error propagation. The technique presented here takes advantage of interleaving to integrate the two approaches so that the error propagation in DFE can be reduced with the help of error correction provided by the decoder. The results of simulations carried out for both, binary, and non-binary, channels confirm that significant gain can be obtained by codesigning equalizer and decoder. Although, systems with time-invariant channels and simple DFE having linear filters were looked into, the technique is fairly general and can easily be modified for more sophisticated equalizers to obtain even larger gains.

Adaptive control of propellant slosh for a launch vehicle with multiple tanks

This paper discusses the use of an adaptive system to stabilize a multi-tank launch vehicle with sloshable fuel. The adaptive system utilizes a sensor to measure the fluid slosh angle, a recursive-least-squares estimator to estimate the natural frequency of the sloshing fuel, and a linear filter which stabilizes the unstable fuel slosh using the frequency estimate. Single-input and multiinput estimators were investigated. The time-varying complexity of the slosh control loop keeps the system persistently excited through flight, even though the attitude is controlled by a conventional PID controller. For the first portion of flight, the adaptive system maintains stability. A modification is proposed for latter portions of flight. The approach requires no tank baffles or partitions.

Adaptive control of propellant slosh for launch vehicles

The use of adaptive system to stabilize a launch vehicle with sloshable fuel is discussed. The adaptive system is based on a laser sensor to measure fluid displacement in the tank, a recursive-least-squares estimator to assess the natural frequency of the sloshing fuel, and a linear filter to stabilize the unstable fuel slosh. The method is found to be promising for a pitch-plane, single pendulum model.

A fast algorithm for image-based ranging

Image-based ranging has emerged as a critical issue in the low altitude operation of flight vehicles such as rotorcraft and planetary landers. These flight regimes require ranging systems for recovering the geometry of the terrain and obstacles for use with guidance algorithms. The development of a ranging equation combining image irradiance together with various order spatial partial derivatives and the vehicle motion parameters is discussed. The ranging equation is in the form of a polynomial in scene depth. Two-dimensional linear filters are then used to compute the coefficients of this polynomial to result in a fast image-based ranging algorithm. Performance of the algorithm is demonstrated using laboratory images.

Nonlinear Coherent Optical Image Processing Using Logarithmic Transmittance of Bacteriorhodopsin Films

The transmission properties of some bacteriorhodopsin-film spatial light modulators are uniquely suited to allow nonlinear optical image-processing operations to be applied to images with multiplicative noise characteristics. A logarithmic amplitude-transmission characteristic of the film permits the conversion of multiplicative noise to additive noise, which may then be linearly filtered out in the Fourier plane of the transformed image. I present experimental results demonstrating the principle and the capability for several different image and noise situations, including deterministic noise and speckle. The bacteriorhodopsin film studied here displays the logarithmic transmission response for write intensities spanning a dynamic range greater than 2 orders of magnitude.

Imaging Polarimetry of Six X-Ray Selected Blazars

Results of broad band V-filter linear optical polarization measurements of six X-ray selected B L Lac objects (XBLs) are presented. Four of these B L Lac objects (MS0737.9+7441, MS0950.9+4929, MS1458.8+2249 and MS 1534.2+0148) had not been measured before in this band. We have detected strong optical polarization in three B L Lac objects. Analysis of radio through X-ray spectra of these sources confirms that these objects are indeed XBLS. We have also detected several new polarized sources in the fields of these B L Lacs.

Nonlinear Optical Image Processing with Bacteriorhodopsin Films

The transmission properties of some bacteriorhodopsin film spatial light modulators are uniquely suited to allow nonlinear optical image processing operations to be applied to images with multiplicative noise characteristics. A logarithmic amplitude transmission feature of the film permits the conversion of multiplicative noise to additive noise, which may then be linearly filtered out in the Fourier plane of the transformed image. The bacteriorhodopsin film displays the logarithmic amplitude response for write beam intensities spanning a dynamic range greater than 2.0 orders of magnitude. We present experimental results demonstrating the principle and capability for several different image and noise situations, including deterministic noise and speckle. Using the bacteriorhodopsin film, we successfully filter out image noise from the transformed image that cannot be removed from the original image.

Stochastic Modeling and Generation of Partially Polarized or Partially Coherent Electromagnetic Waves

Many new Earth remote-sensing instruments are embracing both the advantages and added complexity that result from interferometric or fully polarimetric operation. To increase instrument understanding and functionality a model of the signals these instruments measure is presented. A stochastic model is used as it recognizes the non-deterministic nature of any real-world measurements while also providing a tractable mathematical framework. A stationary, Gaussian-distributed model structure is proposed. Temporal and spectral correlation measures provide a statistical description of the physical properties of coherence and polarization-state. From this relationship the model is mathematically defined. The model is shown to be unique for any set of physical parameters. A method of realizing the model (necessary for applications such as synthetic calibration-signal generation) is given and computer simulation results are presented. The signals are constructed using the output of a multi-input multi-output linear filter system, driven with white noise.
