Optimizing Neutrino Flavor Conversion Measurements through Machine Learning

The phenomenon of neutrino flavor conversion whereby the flavor of a neutrino particle can change between its time of production and later detection was the first definitive evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model. Some of the oscillation parameters used to describe this conversion are not yet well measured, leaving important questions still open regarding flavor conversion both in vacuum and as neutrinos travel through matter. NOvA is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment that uses Fermilab's predominantly $\nu_\mu$ NuMI beam. A 14 kton oil-based liquid scintillator far detector 810 km away is used to measure neutrino oscillation through the $\nu_\mu$ disappearance and $\nu_e$ appearance channels. Super-K is a 50 kton water Cherenkov detector, which measures the disappearance of $\nu_e$ produced during solar fusion. The high density environment of the sun decreases the $\nu_e$ survival probability at higher energies observable in Super-K compared to the vacuum-dominated oscillations at lower energies. However, the transition region is overshadowed by radioactive background in the detector. In both of these experiments, the separation of neutrino detection events from background and classification of neutrino flavor are crucial tasks that benefit from the introduction of machine learning. Chapter 1 gives an overview of neutrinos and the context under which flavor conversion is measured in this dissertation. Chapters 2-7 present the results of a Bayesian sampling approach for the latest NOvA 3-flavor oscillation analysis with $26.6 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target in neutrino mode and $12.5 \times 10^{20}$ in antineutrino mode collected over 10 years. Chapters 8-13 present the results of extending the Super-K solar analysis to lower energies during its fourth phase with 2970 days of livetime.

First search for sterile neutrino oscillation leading to $ν_μ$ disappearance in the Booster Neutrino Beam at ICARUS

We present a search for muon neutrino disappearance in the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at Fermilab using the ICARUS detector. Neutrino interactions identified as muon neutrinos interacting with argon nuclei via the charged current interaction and having only a muon and at least one proton in the final state (1$μ$Np) have been selected from data collected in 2022-2023 (ICARUS Run 2) and compared with a simulation-based expectation. In the context of a fit to a two-neutrino approximation of the sterile 3+1 model, including the impact of systematic uncertainty from the flux, neutrino interaction, and detector models, we find no statistically significant muon neutrino disappearance at the ICARUS baseline of 600 meters from the BNB target. Corresponding 90% C.L. exclusion contours in $Δm^2_{41}$ - sin$^22θ_{μμ}$ space are presented. This is the first oscillation analysis produced by ICARUS exposed to the BNB. We note that the analysis is systematics limited due to large unconstrained uncertainties from the flux and interaction models. In future joint analyses, data from ICARUS and the SBND detector, exposed to the BNB at 110 meters from target, will be combined to provide significant constraint of these uncertainties, enabling a robust, world-leading two-detector analysis.

Quartz Clock Oscillator Design and Analysis

Engineers at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) have used quartz - based clock oscillators in various missions since the 1980s. As such, the design of these frequency control devices requires a high degree of reliability and producibility. The quartz clock oscillators designed at SNL have evolved over many years and are currently developed in house and fabricated using SNLs internal CMOS foundry. They are designed to operate in harsh environments, including temperature, radiation, shock and vibration. This report documents the methodology behind the design of quartz clock oscillators developed at SNL and includes an overview of quartz resonator technology and usage guidelines and a detailed overview of oscillator circuits.

Design of a nonlinear adaptive filter for suppression of shuttle pilot-induced oscillation tendencies

Analysis of a longitudinal pilot-induced oscillation (PIO) experienced just prior to touchdown on the final flight of the space shuttle's approach landing tests indicated that the source of the problem was a combination of poor basic handling qualities aggravated by time delays through the digital flight control computer and rate limiting of the elevator actuators due to high pilot gain. A nonlinear PIO suppression (PIOS) filter was designed and developed to alleviate the vehicle's PIO tendencies by reducing the gain in the command path. From analytical and simulator studies it was shown that the PIOS filter, in an adaptive fashion, can attenuate the command path gain without adding phase lag to the system. With the pitch attitude loop of a simulated shuttle model closed, the PIOS filter increased the gain margin by a factor of about two.

Analysis of shuttle oscillation in the Mach Number = 1.7 to Mach Number = 1.0 range

The first five flights of the Space Transportation System (STS) have exhibited unexpected lateral oscillations in the Mach Number = 1.7 to Mach Number = 1.0 region of the descent trajectory. These oscillations can be split into two parts: a predominantly rolling oscillation referred to as the quarter hertz motion and a long-priod, large-amplitude oscillation in sideslips, roll rate, and yaw rate. These motions are analyzed in this paper in order to determine their source and the mechanism driving them. They will first be examined to determine how much of the motion can be explained using the set of equations that contain linear aerodynamic parameters. Then differences between measured moments and those calculated using linear aerodynamics which are considered to be due to unmodeled moments will be exained. Possible error sources such as not inluding nonlinear aerodynamics in the vehicle model, measurement errors, and the effect of pressure gradients will be considered. Based on these analyses, conclusions as to the nature and cause of the Shuttle lateral oscillations will be drawn.

Recent Developments in the Analysis of Couple Oscillator Arrays

This presentation considers linear arrays of coupled oscillators. Our purpose in coupling oscillators together is to achieve high radiated power through the spatial power combining which results when the oscillators are injection locked to each other. York, et. al. have shown that, left to themselves, the ensemble of injection locked oscillators oscillate at the average of the tuning frequencies of all the oscillators. Coupling these arrays achieves high radiated power through coherent spatial power combining. The coupled oscillators are usually designed to produce constant aperture phase. Oscillators are injection locked to each other or to a master oscillator to produce coherent radiation. Oscillators do not necessarily oscillate at their tuning frequency.

Statistical Analysis of Periodic Oscillations in LASCO Coronal Mass Ejection Speeds

A large set of coronal mass ejections (CMEs, 3463) has been selected to study their periodic oscillations in speed in the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) missions Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) field of view. These events, reported in the SOHOLASCO catalog in the period of time 19962004, were selected based on having at least 11 height-time measurements. This selection criterion allows us to construct at least ten-point speed distance profiles and evaluate kinematic properties of CMEs with a reasonable accuracy. To identify quasi-periodic oscillations in the speed of the CMEs a sinusoidal function was fitted to speed distance profiles and the speed time profiles. Of the considered events 22 revealed periodic velocity fluctuations. These speed oscillations have on average amplitude equal to 87 kms(exp -1) and period 7.8R /241 min (in distance-time). The study shows that speed oscillations are a common phenomenon associated with CME propagation implying that all the CMEs have a similar magnetic flux-rope structure. The nature of oscillations can be explained in terms of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves excited during the eruption process. More accurate detection of these modes could, in the future, enable us to characterize magnetic structures in space (space seismology).

Limit Cycle Oscillating Detonation Wave Behavior Analysis Within a Rotating Detonation Engine

Limit cycle oscillation (LCO) detonation wave behaviors are presented and analyzed for test times exceeding 20 s in a water-cooled rotating detonation engine (RDE). LCO detonation waves exhibit cyclic acceleration and deceleration, resulting in oscillating wave spacing at unique process conditions. In previous RDE studies, similar behaviors have been studied as microsecond-scale instabilities leading to ascending or descending modal transitions. In the current work, however, LCO waves are considered a persistent wave mode, occupying unique portions of the operational envelope adjacent to those of their equally spaced counterparts. These occurrences of LCO waves are repeatable, enduring behaviors. A method to generate shifted contour surfaces specifically intended to extract and analyze wave spacing variation through time, termed limit cycle oscillation visualization (LCOV) surfaces, is presented. LCOV surfaces transform data into the reference frame of a primary traveling wave and are used to analyze quasi-steady, short-timescale, and transitional LCO modes. Results are leveraged to understand the relationship between fill height, wave strength, local wave acceleration, and subsequent LCO wave spacing for individual wave sets. In conclusion, quasi-steady LCO waves display wave spacing oscillations between equal spacing values associated with ±1 wave across runs exceeding 18 s.

Hemispheric asymmetries of the thermospheric semiannual oscillation

An analysis of the data on the asymmetries of the terrestrial thermospheric semiannual oscillation (SAO), recorded by satellites, radar stations, and rocket soundings (Hedin, 1983), is presented. The possible sources for the thermospheric SAO are discussed. An interpretation is presented of the hemispheric asymmetries of the thermospheric SAO in terms of gravity-wave activities, in which the proposed mechanism is associated with the hemispheric asymmetries in the atmospheric circulation due to the orographic differences between the two hemispheres. Consideration is given to the energy requirements for the observed hemispheric difference in the thermospheric SAO. The overall evidence supporting the proposed interpretation is discussed.
