Study report on combining diagnostic and therapeutic considerations with subsystem and whole-body simulation

Current applications of simulation models for clinical research described included tilt model simulation of orthostatic intolerance with hemorrhage, and modeling long term circulatory circulation. Current capabilities include: (1) simulation of analogous pathological states and effects of abnormal environmental stressors by the manipulation of system variables and changing inputs in various sequences; (2) simulation of time courses of responses of controlled variables by the altered inputs and their relationships; (3) simulation of physiological responses of treatment such as isotonic saline transfusion; (4) simulation of the effectiveness of a treatment as well as the effects of complication superimposed on an existing pathological state; and (5) comparison of the effectiveness of various treatments/countermeasures for a given pathological state. The feasibility of applying simulation models to diagnostic and therapeutic research problems is assessed.

Power processing and control requirements of dispersed solar thermal electric generation systems

Power Processing and Control requirements of Dispersed Receiver Solar Thermal Electric Generation Systems are presented. Kinematic Stirling Engines, Brayton Engines and Rankine Engines are considered as prime movers. Various types of generators are considered for ac and dc link generations. It is found that ac-ac Power Conversion is not suitable for implementation at this time. It is also found that ac-dc-ac Power Conversion with a large central inverter is more efficient than ac-dc-ac Power Conversion using small dispersed inverters. Ac-link solar thermal electric plants face potential stability and synchronization problems. Research and development efforts are needed in improving component performance characteristics and generation efficiency to make Solar Thermal Electric Generation economically attractive.

Statistical model to perform error analysis of curve fits of wind tunnel test data using the techniques of analysis of variance and regression analysis

The considered research had the objective to design a statistical model that could perform an error analysis of curve fits of wind tunnel test data using analysis of variance and regression analysis techniques. Four related subproblems were defined, and by solving each of these a solution to the general research problem was obtained. The capabilities of the evolved true statistical model are considered. The least squares fit is used to determine the nature of the force, moment, and pressure data. The order of the curve fit is increased in order to delete the quadratic effect in the residuals. The analysis of variance is used to determine the magnitude and effect of the error factor associated with the experimental data.

ISEE work on collisionless shocks - CDAW-3, the meeting and the results July 23-26, 1979

At CDAW(Coordinated Data Analysis Workshop)-3, data from ISEE-1 and -2 were used, and 17 data sets were incorporated into a total of 44 megabytes of disk storage. The presence of ISEE-1 and -2 at variable separation distances has made it possible to settle the question of shock motion and to obtain shock thicknesses. A full range of wave instrumentation was available to study upstream waves and turbulence, and energetic particle investigations made it possible to obtain good observations of shock-induced particle acceleration. It is concluded that these improved observations have resulted in a revival of interest in the study of the collisionless shock, both as an experimental and theoretical research problem. It is expected that these investigations will lead to a better understanding of how to use the earth's bow shock to provide well-defined and theoretically useful examples for study.

Prochloron

A review is given of the research problems associated with Prochloron. Two questions are discussed in detail. Did prochlorophytes arise in independently off cyanophytes, or did one of these classes arise from the other? If eukaryotic chlorophytes originated by symbiogenesis, might their plastids have arisen from symbiotic, endophytic prochlorophyte-like ancestors?

Status and Direction of Tribology as a Science in the 80's. Understanding and Prediction

The most challenging research problems in tribology for the next decade or beyond are classified horizontally into two categories: (1) understanding of basic mechanisms and (2) prediction of practical performance. Vertical classifications are in terms of particular themes or fields of interest. Areas where more fundamental work is required are: adhesion and friction of clean and contaminated surfaces; lubrication; new materials; surface characterization at the engineering level (topography) and at the atomic levels (various spectroscopies); and wear.

Meteorological and dynamical requirements for MST radar networks: Waves

Studies of wave motions using the MST radar have concentrated on single station time series analyses of gravity waves and tides. Since these radars collect high time resolution data they have the potential to become a significant tool for mesoscale research. In addition, radars are operated almost continuously unattended and, consequently, data sets are available for analyzing longer period wave motions such as tides and planetary scale waves. Although there is much to learn from single station data, the possibilities of new knowledge from a network of radars is exciting. The scales of wave motions in the atmosphere cover a broad range. Consequently the choice of a radar network depends to a large extent on the types of wave motions that are studied. There are many outstanding research problems that would benefit from observations from a MST radar network. In particular, there is a strong need for measurements of gravity wave parameters and equatorial wave motions. Some of the current problems in wave dynamics are discussed.

Atmospheric science experiments applicable to Space Shuttle Spacelab missions

The present lack of a lower atmosphere research satellite program for the 1980s has prompted consideration of the Space Shuttle/Spacelab system as a means of flying sensor complements geared toward specific research problems, as well as continued instrument development. Three specific examples of possible science questions related to precipitation are discussed: (1) spatial structure of mesoscale cloud and precipitation systems, (2) lightning and storm development, and (3) cyclone intensification over oceanic regions. Examples of space sensors availab le to provide measurements needed in addressing these questions are also presented. Distinctive aspects of low-earth orbit experiments would be high resolution, multispectral sensing of atmospheric phenomena by complements of instruments, and more efficient sensor development through reflights of specific hardware packages.

Fine-scale traverses in cumulate rocks, Stillwater Complex: A lunar analogue study

The objective was to document finite-scale compositional variations in cumulate rocks from the Stillwater Complex in Montana and to interpret these data in the context of planetary magma fractionation processes such as those operative during the formation of the Earth's Moon. This research problem involved collecting samples in the Stillwater Complex and analyzing them by electron microprobe, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). The electron microprobe is used to determine the compositions of cumulus and intercumulus phases in the rocks, the XRF is used to determine the bulk-rock major element and trace element (Y, Sr, Rb, Zr, Ni, and Cr) abundances, and the INAA lab. is used to determine the trace element (Sc, Co, Cr, Ni, Ta, Hf, U, Th, and the REE) abundances of mineral separates and bulk rocks.

Turbine stator flow field simulations

The increased capability and accessibility of modern computers, coupled with increasingly sophisticated and accurate numerical and physical modeling, has led to a marked impact of numerical simulations upon current turbine design and research problems. The turbine section represents a considerable challenge as it contains significant regions of complex three-dimensional flow, including both aerodynamic and heat transfer phenomena. The focus of the present effort is the development of an efficient and accurate three-dimensional Navier-Stokes calculation procedure for application to the turbine stator and rotor problems. In particular, an effective procedure is sought which: (1) adequately represents the flow physics, (2) allows for sufficient resolution in regions of small length scale, and (3) has sufficiently good convergence properties so as to allow use on a regular basis.
