Ferrimagnetic Order in Tetragonal Antiperovskite Mn3GeN

The crystal and magnetic structures of the nitride antiperovskite M⁢n3⁢GeN reveals ferrimagnetic order stemming from a distorted kagome-derived lattice of the Mn atoms. Polycrystalline M⁢n3⁢GeN was synthesized via a solid-state reaction and characterized using neutron powder diffraction, dc magnetometry, and first-principles calculations. Rietveld refinement reveals near-stoichiometric composition (M⁢n3⁢Ge⁢N0.992⁢(7)) adopting a tetragonal 𝐼⁢4/𝑚⁢𝑐⁢𝑚 structure at 𝑇=500K and below, featuring axially distorted and tilted [NM⁢n6] octahedra that result in a buckled Mn kagome lattice. On heating, the tetragonal distortion and octahedral tilt angle decrease continuously before transitioning to the cubic 𝑃⁢𝑚⁢3⁢𝑚 antiperovskite phase at 𝑇≈527K. Neutron diffraction and magnetometry together reveal noncollinear ferrimagnetic ordering. For 30K≤𝑇≤500K, the magnetic structure is described by magnetic space group 𝐼⁢𝑏⁢𝑎′⁢𝑚′ (72.544), with inequivalent Mn1 and Mn2 sublattices that couple antiferromagnetically to yield a net moment. Density-functional theory-based calculations show that the different local moments originate from the bandwidths associated with distinct Mn–N bond lengths. Temperature-dependent refinements reveal distinct differences in the thermal disordering profiles of the Mn1 and Mn2 sublattices. These findings reveal a subtlety in the magnetic and structural behavior of M⁢n3⁢GeN, highlighting the interplay between structural distortions, magnetic ordering, and electronic structure in kagome-derived antiperovskite materials.

Crystal and magnetic structures of magnetic topological insulators MnBi 2 Te 4 and MnBi 4 Te 7

Using single-crystal neutron diffraction, we present a systematic investigation of the crystal structure and magnetism of the van der Waals topological insulators MnBi 2 Te 4 and MnBi 4 Te 7 , where rich topological quantum states have been recently predicted and observed. Structural refinements reveal that considerable Bi atoms occupied on the Mn sites in both materials, distinct from the previously reported antisite disorder. We show unambiguously that MnBi 2 Te 4 orders antiferromagnetically below 24 K, featured by a magnetic symmetry R I - 3 c , while MnBi 4 Te 7 is antiferromagnetic below 13 K with a magnetic space group P c - 3 c 1 . They both present antiferromagnetically coupled ferromagnetic layers with spins along the c axis. We put forward a stacking rule for the crystal structure of an infinitely adaptive series MnBi 2 n Te 3 n + 1 ( n ≥ 1 ) with a building unit of [ Bi 2 Te 3 ] . Overall, by comparing the magnetic properties between MnBi 2 Te 4 and MnBi 4 Te 7 , together with recent density-functional theory calculations, we concluded that a two-dimensional magnetism limit might be realized in the derivatives. Our work may promote theoretical studies of topological magnetic states in the series of MnBi 2 n Te 3 n + 1 .

Emergent spin-1 Haldane gap and ferroelectricity in a frustrated spin- 1 2 ladder

We report experimental and theoretical evidence that Rb 2 Cu 2 Mo 3 O 12 has a nonmagnetic tetramer ground state of a two-leg ladder comprising antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated spin-12 chains and exhibits a Haldane spin gap of emergent spin-1 pairs. Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. A tiny magnetic field generates ferroelectricity without closing the spin gap, indicating a unique class of ferroelectricity induced by a vector spin chirality order.

Experimental observation of magnetic dimers in diluted Yb:YAlO 3

In this paper, we present a comprehensive experimental investigation of Yb magnetic dimers in Yb 0.04 Y 0.96 AlO 3 , an Yb-doped yttrium aluminum perovskite YAlO3, by means of specific heat, magnetization, and high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. In our sample, the Yb ions are randomly distributed over the lattice and ~7% of Yb ions form quantum dimers due to nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic coupling along the c axis. At zero field, the dimer formation manifests itself in an appearance of an inelastic peak at Δ ≈ 0.2 meV in the INS spectrum and a Schottky-like anomaly in the specific heat. The structure factor of the INS peak exhibits a cosine modulation along the $L$ direction, in agreement with the $c$-axis nearest-neighbor intradimer coupling. A careful fitting of the low-temperature specific heat shows that the excited state is a degenerate triplet, which indicates a surprisingly small anisotropy of the effective Yb-Yb exchange interaction despite the low crystal symmetry and anisotropic magnetic dipole contribution, in agreement with previous reports for the Yb parent compound, YbAlO 3 , and in contrast to Yb 2 Pt 2 Pb. The obtained results are precisely reproduced by analytical calculations for the Yb dimers.

Block orbital-selective Mott insulators: A spin excitation analysis

We present a comprehensive study of the spin excitations—as measured by the dynamical spin structure factor S(q,ω)—of the so-called block-magnetic state of low-dimensional orbital-selective Mott insulators. We realize this state via both a multi-orbital Hubbard model and a generalized Kondo-Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Due to various competing energy scales present in the models, the system develops periodic ferromagnetic islands of various shapes and sizes, which are antiferromagnetically coupled. The 2×2 particular case was already found experimentally in the ladder material BaFe2Se3 that becomes superconducting under pressure. Here we discuss the electronic density as well as Hubbard and Hund coupling dependence of S(q,ω) using density matrix renormalization group method. Several interesting features were identified: (1) An acoustic (dispersive spin-wave) mode develops. (2) The spin-wave bandwidth establishes a new energy scale that is strongly dependent on the size of the magnetic island and becomes abnormally small for large clusters. (3) Optical (dispersionless spin excitation) modes are present for all block states studied here. In addition, a variety of phenomenological spin Hamiltonians have been investigated but none matches entirely our results that were obtained primarily at intermediate Hubbard U strengths. Our comprehensive analysis provides theoretical guidance and motivation to crystal growers to search for appropriate candidate materials to realize the block states, and to neutron scattering experimentalists to confirm the exotic dynamical magnetic properties unveiled here, with a rich mixture of acoustic and optical features.

Robust long-range magnetic correlation across antiphase domain boundaries in Sr 2 CrReO 6

Here, we report a resonant elastic x-ray scattering study of a thin-film sample of Sr 2 CrReO 6 , which has one of the highest ferrimagnetic transition temperatures among ordered double perovskites. We found resonantly enhanced magnetic Bragg peaks at Q = (odd, odd, odd) at both the rhenium L 2 and L 3 edges, which coincide with the structural Bragg peaks of Sr 2 CrReO 6 . By analyzing the widths of these Bragg peaks, we extracted very different structural and magnetic correlation lengths. The former is about 15 nm, while the latter is constrained by the instrumental resolution to be at least 90 nm. We argue that a finite structural correlation length is consistent with the existence of antiphase nanodomains in our sample. On the other hand, a much larger magnetic correlation length indicates that the magnetic correlation extends far beyond the boundaries of individual domains and is consistent with strong antiferromagnetic coupling between different antiphase domains. Last, from the azimuthal dependence of the magnetic intensity, we show that the magnetic moments lie perpendicular to the c axis, which explains the earlier bulk magnetization data.

Spin-liquid behavior of the three-dimensional magnetic system Ba 3 NiIr 2 O 9 with S = 1

The quantum spin liquid (QSL) is an exotic phase of magnetic materials where the spins continue to fluctuate without any symmetry breaking down to zero temperature. Among the handful reports of QSL with spin S ≥ 1, examples with magnetic ions on a three-dimensional (3D) magnetic lattice are extremely rare since both larger spin and higher dimension tend to suppress quantum fluctuations. In this work, we offer a new strategy to achieve 3D QSL with high spin by utilizing two types of transition metal ions; both are magnetically active but located at crystallographically inequivalent positions. Furthermore, we design a 3D magnetic system Ba 3 NiIr 2 O 9 consisting of interconnected corner-shared NiO 6 octahedra and face-shared Ir 2 O 9 dimer, both having triangular arrangements in a-b plane. X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements confirm the presence of Ni 2+ (S = 1). Furthermore, our detailed thermodynamic and magnetic measurements reveal that this compound is a realization of gapless QSL state down to at least 100 mK. Ab initio calculations find a strong magnetic exchange between Ir and Ni sublattices and in-plane antiferromagnetic coupling between the dimers, resulting in dynamically fluctuating magnetic moments.

Defect-driven ferrimagnetism and hidden magnetization in MnBi 2 Te 4

MnBi 2 Te 4 (MBT) materials are promising antiferromagnetic topological insulators in which field-driven ferromagnetism is predicted to cause a transition between axion insulator and Weyl semimetallic states. However, the presence of antiferromagnetic coupling between Mn/Bi antisite defects and the main Mn layer can reduce the low-field magnetization, and it has been shown that such defects are more prevalent in the structurally identical magnetic insulator MnSb 2 Te 4 (MST). We use high-field magnetization measurements to show that the magnetization of MBT and MST occur in stages and full saturation requires fields of ~60 T. As a consequence, the low-field magnetization plateau state in MBT, where many determinations of the quantum anomalous Hall state are studied, actually consists of ferrimagnetic septuple blocks containing both uniform and staggered magnetization components.

Frustrated Kondo impurity triangle: A simple model of deconfinement

We report that the concepts of deconfinement and topological order are of great current interest for quantum information science and for our understanding of quantum materials. Here, we introduce a simple model of three antiferromagnetically coupled Kondo impurities, a Kondo triangle, which can be used to further extend the application of these concepts to electronic systems. We show that, by tuning the magnetic frustration, the Kondo triangle undergoes a quantum phase transition between two phases of unbroken symmetry, signaling a phase transition beyond the Landau paradigm. We demonstrate that the frustrated spin liquid phase is described by a three-channel Kondo (3CK) fixed point and thus displays an irrational ground state degeneracy. Using an Abrikosov pseudofermion representation, this quantum state is categorized by an emergent U(1) gauge field and its projective symmetry group. The gauge theory is deconfining in the sense that a miniature Wilson loop orders and topological defects (instantons in the gauge field) are expelled. This phase persists in the presence of moderate Kondo screening until proliferation of topological defects leads to a quantum phase transition to an unfrustrated Fermi liquid phase. Based on this evidence, we propose that the 3CK phase displays topological order in a similar sense as gapless spin liquids.

Suppressed incommensurate order in swedenborgite Ca 0.5 Y 0.5 BaCo 4 O 7

Swedenborgite Ca 0.5 Y 0.5 BaCo 4 O 7 (CYBCO) with geometrically frustrated kagome and triangular lattices exhibits a disordered ground state in spite of strong antiferromagnetic couplings between the Co spins. The character of the disordered state has been debated due to ambiguous Co states in the triangular layers. Here, we perform single-crystal diffuse neutron scattering experiments to fully characterize the short-range spin correlations in CYBCO. Through reverse Monte Carlo and self-consistent Gaussian approximation analyses, we confirm that the Co ions in both the kagome and triangular layers are magnetic, and the interlayer couplings, together with the lattice distortion, promote an incommensurate magnetic order that is suppressed possibly by exchange disorder. Our work clarifies the short-range spin correlations in CYBCO and establishes a general correspondence between unequal interactions and incommensurate spin correlations on the swedenborgite lattice.

Coexistence of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid and magnetic order in a spin-1 antiferromagnet

We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with the first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ and a three-spin scalar chirality term $J_\chi$. Using the density matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out a global phase diagram including various magnetic order phases and an emergent quantum spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a bosonic non-Abelian Moore-Read state from the fingerprint of the entanglement spectra and identification of a full set of topological sectors. We further unveil a stripe magnetic order coexisting with this spin liquid. Furthermore, our results not only establish a rare example of non-Abelian spin liquids in simple spin systems but also demonstrate the coexistence of fractionalized excitations and magnetic order beyond mean-field descriptions.

Magnetic dilution effect and topological phase transitions in (Mn 1- x Pb x )Bi 2 Te 4

We report, as the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator, MnBi 2 Te 4 has provided a material platform to realize various emergent phenomena arising from the interplay of magnetism and band topology. Here, by investigating (Mn 1-x Pb x )Bi 2 Te 4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.82) single crystals via the x-ray, electrical transport, magnetometry and neutron measurements, chemical analysis, external pressure, and first-principles calculations, we reveal the magnetic dilution effect on the magnetism and band topology in MnBi 2 Te 4 . With increasing x, both lattice parameters a and c expand linearly by around 2%. All samples undergo the paramagnetic to A-type antiferromagnetic transition with the Néel temperature decreasing lineally from 24 K at x = 0 to 2 K at x = 0.82. Our neutron data refinement of the x = 0.37 sample indicates that the ordered moment is 4.3(1)μ B /Mn at 4.85 K and the amount of the Mn Bi antisites is negligible within the error bars. Isothermal magnetization data reveal a slight decrease of the interlayer plane-plane antiferromagnetic exchange interaction and a monotonic decrease of the magnetic anisotropy due to diluting magnetic ions and enlarging the unit cell. For x = 0.37, the application of external pressures enhances the interlayer antiferromagnetic coupling, boosting the Néel temperature at a rate of 1.4 K/GPa and the saturation field at a rate of 1.8 T/GPa. Furthermore, our first-principles calculations reveal that the band inversion in the two end materials, MnBi 2 Te 4 and PbBi 2 Te 4 , occurs at the Γ and Z point, respectively, while two gapless points appear at x = 0.44 and x = 0.66, suggesting possible topological phase transitions with doping.

Unidirectional multipulse helicity-independent all-optical switching in [Ni/Pt] based synthetic ferrimagnets

Nickel-platinum-based synthetic ferrimagnets (SFi's) are highly tunable and rare-earth-free materials that allow ultrafast all optical control of magnetism to be explored. This study considers a SFi composed of a ferromagnetic [Ni/Pt] multilayer and a ferromagnetic Co layer, separated by an Ir layer that mediates an antiferromagnetic coupling. Helicity-independent all optical switching (HI-AOS) between two antiparallel magnetization states is observed. AOS may be realized at increased temperature through reduction of the thickness of the Pt layers. Switching is unidirectional and has a strong dependence on the applied magnetic field history, which suggests the possible presence of a nanoscale magnetic texture that may be important in controlling AOS in SFi systems. Electronic structure and magnetic tendencies of trilayer La 4 Ni 3 O 10 under pressure: Structural transition, molecular orbitals, and layer differentiation

Motivated by the recent observation of superconductivity in the pressurized trilayer Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) nickelate La 4 Ni 3 O 10 , we explore its structural, electronic, and magnetic properties as a function of hydrostatic pressure from first-principles calculations. We find that an orthorhombic (monoclinic)-to-tetragonal transition under pressure takes place concomitantly with the onset of superconductivity. The electronic structure of La 4 Ni 3 O 10 can be understood using a molecular trimer basis wherein n molecular subbands arise as the d z 2 orbitals hybridize strongly along the c axis within the trilayer. The magnetic tendencies indicate that the ground state at ambient pressure is formed by nonmagnetic inner planes and stripe-ordered outer planes that are antiferromagnetically coupled along the c axis, resulting in an unusual ↑, 0, ↓ stacking that is consistent with the spin density wave model previously suggested by neutron diffraction. Such a state is destabilized at the pressure where superconductivity arises. Despite the presence of d z 2 states at the Fermi level, the d x 2 –y 2 orbitals also play a key role in the electronic structure of La4Ni3O10. Finally, this active role of the d x 2 –y 2 states in the low-energy physics of the trilayer RP nickelate, together with the distinct electronic behavior of the inner and outer planes, resembles the physics of multilayer cuprates.

Cluster Frustration in the Breathing Pyrochlore Magnet LiGaCr 4 S 8

We present a comprehensive neutron scattering study of the breathing pyrochlore magnet LiGaCr 4 S 8 . We observe an unconventional magnetic excitation spectrum with a separation of high and low-energy spin dynamics in the correlated paramagnetic regime above a spin-freezing transition at 12(2) K. By fitting to magnetic diffuse-scattering data, we parameterize the spin Hamiltonian. We find that interactions are ferromagnetic within the large and small tetrahedra of the breathing pyrochlore lattice, but antiferromagnetic further-neighbor interactions are also essential to explain our data, in qualitative agreement with density-functional theory predictions [Ghosh et al., npj Quantum Mater. 4, 63 (2019)]. We explain the origin of geometrical frustration in LiGaCr 4 S 8 in terms of net antiferromagnetic coupling between emergent tetrahedral spin clusters that occupy a face-centered lattice. Furthermore, our results provide insight into the emergence of frustration in the presence of strong further-neighbor couplings, and a blueprint for the determination of magnetic interactions in classical spin liquids.

Prediction of s ± -Wave Superconductivity Enhanced by Electronic Doping in Trilayer Nickelates La 4 Ni 3 O 10 under Pressure

Motivated by the recently reported signatures of superconductivity in trilayer La 4 ⁢Ni 3 ⁢O 10 under pressure, here we comprehensively study this system using ab initio and random-phase approximation techniques. Without electronic interactions, the Ni d 3z 2 –r 2 orbitals show a bonding-antibonding and nonbonding splitting behavior via the O p z orbitals inducing a “trimer” lattice in La 4⁢ Ni 3 ⁢O 10 , analogous to the dimers of La 3 ⁢Ni 2 ⁢O 7 . The Fermi surface consists of three electron sheets with mixed e g orbitals, and a hole and an electron pocket made up of the d 3⁢z 2 –r 2 orbital, suggesting a Ni two-orbital minimum model. In addition, we find that superconducting pairing is induced in the s ± -wave channel due to partial nesting between the M = (π,π) centered pockets and portions of the Fermi surface centered at the Γ = (0,0) point. With changing electronic density n, the s ± instability remains leading and its pairing strength shows a domelike behavior with a maximum around n = 4.2 ( ~6.7% electron doping). The superconducting instability disappears at the same electronic density as that in the new 1313 stacking La 3 ⁢Ni 2 ⁢O 7 , correlated with the vanishing of the hole pocket that arises from the trilayer sublattice, suggesting that the high-T c superconductivity of La 3⁢ Ni 2 ⁢O 7 does not originate from a trilayer and monolayer structure. Furthermore, we confirm the experimentally proposed spin state in La 4 ⁢Ni 3 ⁢O 10 with an in-plane (π, π) order and antiferromagnetic coupling between the top and bottom Ni layers, and spin zero in the middle layer.

Chirality in the Kagome Metal CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5

Using x-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we study photoemission intensity changes related to changes in the geometric and electronic structure in the kagome metal CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5 upon transition to an unconventional charge density wave (CDW) state. The XPD patterns reveal the presence of a chiral atomic structure in the CDW phase. Furthermore, using circularly polarized x-rays, we have found a pronounced nontrivial circular dichroism in the angular distribution of the valence band photoemission in the CDW phase, indicating a chirality of the electronic structure. This observation is consistent with the proposed orbital loop current order. In view of a negligible spontaneous Kerr signal in recent magneto-optical studies, the results suggest an antiferromagnetic coupling of the orbital magnetic moments along the 𝑐 axis. Here, while the inherent structural chirality may also induce circular dichroism, the observed asymmetry values seem to be too large in the case of the weak structural distortions caused by the CDW.
