Multiqubit noise deconvolution and characterization

We present a noise deconvolution technique for obtaining noiseless expectation values of noisy observables at the output of multiqubit quantum channels. For any number of qubits or in the presence of correlations, our protocol applies to any mathematically invertible noise model, even when its inverse map is not physically implementable, i.e., when it is neither completely positive nor trace preserving. For a generic observable affected by Pauli noise it provides a quadratic speedup, always producing a rescaling of its Pauli basis components. We show that it is still possible to achieve the deconvolution while experimentally estimating the noise parameters, whenever these are unknown (bypassing resource-heavy techniques such as quantum process tomography). We provide a simulation, with examples for both Pauli and non-Pauli channels.

A High Voltage Distribution System for the Mu2e Electron Tracker

This paper describes the design and development of a High Voltage distribution system (Smart Switch - SS) which distributes one input high voltage (HV) into six High Voltage channels (HVDS) of a straw detector plane. The SS independently sets, controls, and monitors the HV to each individual channel of a straw-detector plane in the Mu2E Electron Tracking Detector. Each straw plane is composed of three 120 deg crescent-shaped panels, and each panel is composed of 96 straw-tube detectors. Each output channel of the SS has independent, ON-OFF, current and HV monitoring, as well as filtration, isolation, and a crowbar to provide overcurrent protection for in that channel. The inter-communication system is based on TCP/IP protocol using a Raspberry Pi. The HVDS meets all required specifications including long term stability, accurate monitoring of the HV and current, and overcurrent trip. The performance of the HVDS was found to be comparable to, if not better than, commercial HV power supplies.

A Framework for Effective Science Communication and Outreach Strategies and Dissemination of Research Findings for Marine Energy Projects

Marine energy is an emerging renewable energy industry with the potential to produce 2300 terawatt-hours per year from resources within the United States. As development and testing of marine energy devices advance, regulatory and permitting decision-makers are concerned about the uncertainty surrounding the potential environmental effects resulting from the introduction of these novel devices in coastal and riverine environments. The Triton Initiative researches and provides recommendations for environmental monitoring technologies and methods to inform industry stakeholders with the data necessary to permit the testing of marine energy systems. Effective dissemination of the research findings is essential for improving the accessibility of data to stakeholders who may use the results to inform policy decisions, yet few frameworks for conducting science communications for marine energy projects exist. In this paper, we present tools, channels, and tactics for developing a science communication framework for marine energy projects, or similar areas of study, using the Triton Initiative’s pilot science communication program as a case study. By leveraging existing bodies of work in disciplines such as communications theory, marketing, public relations, and social science, the presented framework includes audience identification and analysis; channel development, including a website, blog, newsletter, social media, and webinars and presentations; and metrics for determining success. Outcomes from one year of Triton’s case study are presented, including the most effective tactics and lessons learned.

Systems and methods for electrical energy storage

The present disclosure relates to an electrical energy storage apparatus which forms an interpenetrating, three dimensional structure. The structure may have a first non-planar channel filled with an anode material to form an anode, and a second non-planar channel adjacent the first non-planar channel filled with a cathode material to form a cathode. A third non-planar channel may be formed adjacent the first and second non-planar channels and filled with an electrolyte. The first, second and third channels are formed so as to be interpenetrating and form a spatially dense, three dimensional structure. A first current collector is in communication with the first non-planar channel and forms a first electrode, while a second current collector is in communication with the second non-planar channel and forms a second electrode. A separator layers separates the current collectors.

Differentiable Channels Are All You Need

Mobile wireless communication systems must adapt to and compensate for time-varying propagation paths. The process of performing compensation in the receiver for said effects is known as equalization. We seek an improved method for optimizing the reliability of said wireless links to minimize outage probability. A method based on machine learning, specifically deep learning, has the potential to allow for greater flexibility and robustness against unforeseen channel conditions. In this report we investigate the performance of a prior method in the literature with minor modifications.

Spatial Mode Correction of Single Photons Using Machine Learning

Abstract Spatial modes of light constitute valuable resources for a variety of quantum technologies ranging from quantum communication and quantum imaging to remote sensing. Nevertheless, their vulnerabilities to phase distortions, induced by random media, impose significant limitations on the realistic implementation of numerous quantum‐photonic technologies. Unfortunately, this problem is exacerbated at the single‐photon level. Over the last two decades, this challenging problem has been tackled through conventional schemes that utilize optical nonlinearities, quantum correlations, and adaptive optics. In this article, the self‐learning and self‐evolving features of artificial neural networks are exploited to correct the complex spatial profile of distorted Laguerre–Gaussian modes at the single‐photon level. Furthermore, the potential of this technique is used to improve the channel capacity of an optical communication protocol that relies on structured single photons. The results have important implications for real‐time turbulence correction of structured photons and single‐photon images.

Designing noise-robust quantum networks coexisting in the classical fiber infrastructure

The scalability of quantum networking will benefit from quantum and classical communications coexisting in shared fibers, the main challenge being spontaneous Raman scattering noise. We investigate the coexistence of multi-channel O-band quantum and C-band classical communications. We characterize multiple narrowband entangled photon pair channels across 1282 nm-1318 nm co-propagating over 48 km of installed standard fiber with record C-band power (>18 dBm) and demonstrate that some quantum-classical wavelength combinations significantly outperform others. We analyze the Raman noise spectrum, optimal wavelength engineering, multi-photon pair emission in entangled photon-classical coexistence, and evaluate the implications for future quantum applications.

Passive Environment-Assisted Quantum Communication with GKP States

Bosonic pure-loss channel, which represents the process of photons decaying into a vacuum environment, has zero quantum capacity when the channel’s transmissivity is less than 50%. Modeled as a beam splitter interaction between the system and its environment, the performance of bosonic pure-loss channel can be enhanced by controlling the environment state. We show that by choosing the ideal Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) states for the system and its environment, perfect transmission of quantum information through a beam splitter is achievable at arbitrarily low transmissivities. Our explicit constructions allow for experimental demonstration of the improved performance of a quantum channel through passive environment assistance, which is potentially useful for quantum transduction where the environment state can be naturally controlled. In practice, it is crucial to consider finite-energy constraints, and high-fidelity quantum communication through a beam splitter remains achievable with GKP states at the few-photon level.

Capacities of Entanglement Distribution From a Central Source

Distribution of entanglement is an essential task in quantum information processing and the realization of quantum networks. In our work, we theoretically investigate the scenario where a central source prepares an N -partite entangled state and transmits each entangled subsystem to one of N receivers through noisy quantum channels. The receivers are then able to perform local operations assisted by unlimited classical communication to distill target entangled states from the noisy channel output. In this operational context, we define the EPR distribution capacity and the GHZ distribution capacity of a quantum channel as the largest rates at which Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) states and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states can be faithfully distributed through the channel, respectively. We establish lower and upper bounds on the EPR distribution capacity by connecting it with the task of assisted entanglement distillation. We also construct an explicit protocol consisting of a combination of a quantum communication code and a classical-post-processing-assisted entanglement generation code, which yields a simple achievable lower bound for generic channels. As applications of these results, we give an exact expression for the EPR distribution capacity over two erasure channels and bounds on the EPR distribution capacity over two generalized amplitude damping channels. We also bound the GHZ distribution capacity, which results in an exact characterization of the GHZ distribution capacity when the most noisy channel is a dephasing channel.

Eavesdropping on the Decohering Environment: Quantum Darwinism, Amplification, and the Origin of Objective Classical Reality

“How much information about a system S can one extract from a fragment F of the environment E that decohered it?” is the central question of Quantum Darwinism. To date, most answers relied on the quantum mutual information of SF, or on the Holevo bound on the channel capacity of F to communicate the classical information encoded in S. Furthermore, these are reasonable upper bounds on what is really needed but much harder to calculate—the accessible information in the fragment F about S. We consider a model based on imperfect c-not gates where all the above can be computed, and discuss its implications for the emergence of objective classical reality. We find that all relevant quantities, such as the quantum mutual information as well as various bounds on the accessible information exhibit similar behavior. In the regime relevant for the emergence of objective classical reality this includes scaling independent of the quality of the imperfect c-not gates or the size of E, and even nearly independent of the initial state of S.

Advanced architectures for high-performance quantum networking

As practical quantum networks prepare to serve an ever-expanding number of nodes, there has grown a need for advanced auxiliary classical systems that support the quantum protocols and maintain compatibility with the existing fiber-optic infrastructure. We propose and demonstrate a quantum local area network design that addresses current deployment limitations in timing and security in a scalable fashion using commercial off-the-shelf components. First, we employ White Rabbit switches to synchronize three remote nodes with ultra-low timing jitter, significantly increasing the fidelities of the distributed entangled states over previous work with Global Positioning System clocks. Second, using a parallel quantum key distribution channel, we secure the classical communications needed for instrument control and data management. Therefore, the conventional network that manages our entanglement network is secured using keys generated via an underlying quantum key distribution layer, preserving the integrity of the supporting systems and the relevant data in a future-proof fashion.

Long-range wormhole teleportation

We extend the protocol of Gao and Jafferis arXiv:1911.07416 to allow wormhole teleportation between two entangled copies of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model communicating only through a classical channel. We demonstrate in finite $N$ simulations that the protocol exhibits the characteristic holographic features of wormhole teleportation discussed and summarized in Jafferis et al. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05424-3 . We review and exhibit in detail how these holographic features relate to size winding which, as first shown by Brown et al. arXiv:1911.06314 and Nezami et al. arXiv:2102.01064, encodes a dual description of wormhole teleportation.

Coexistent quantum channel characterization using quantum process tomography with spectrally resolved detection

The coexistence of classical and quantum signals over the same optical fiber is critical for quantum networks operating within the existing communications infrastructure. Here, we characterize the quantum channel that results from distributing approximate single-photon polarization-encoded qubits simultaneously with classical light of varying intensities through a 25 km fiber-optic channel. We use spectrally resolved quantum process tomography with a newly developed Bayesian reconstruction method to estimate the quantum channel from experimental data, both with and without classical noise. Furthermore, we show that the coexistent fiber-based quantum channel has high process fidelity with an ideal depolarizing channel if the noise is dominated by Raman scattering. These results aid future development of quantum repeater designs and quantum error-correcting codes which benefit from realistic channel error models.

Efficient and Robust p-Type Transistor Based on Ultrawide-Bandgap Semiconductor

The p-type transistor is an indispensable component of semiconductor technology, enabling a complementary operation with n-channel transistors for computation, storage, and communication. Achieving both high robustness and high efficiency is highly desirable but challenging for p-type transistors due to the limited semiconductors with reliable hole transport and their high activation energies. Here, in this study, we achieved a robust yet efficient p-type transistor by heterogeneously integrating an ultrawide-bandgap semiconductor and a high-κ dielectric layer through van der Waals integration. The p-type transistor employs a two-dimensional hole channel on hydrogenated diamond (bandgap 5.6 eV) combined with a high-κ (30.5) SrTiO 3 perovskite membrane. At room temperature, the transistor exhibits stable operation with a high on-current (∼200 mA/mm), low subthreshold swing (70 mV/dec), high hole mobility (566 cm 2 /(V·s) to 572 cm 2 /(V·s)), and high on–off ratio (∼10 9 ). Furthermore, tuning the annealing temperature allows operation in either enhancement or depletion mode. The robust p-type transistor with high efficiency holds great potential for future power electronics, ultraviolet (UV) optoelectronics, and harsh-environment electronic applications.
