The Berkeley parasitic SETI program

Parasitic programs for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), carried out concurrently with conventional radio astronomical observing programs, can be an attractive and cost-effective means of exploring the large multidimensional search space intrinsic to this effort. A microprocessor-based automated SETI acquisition system is described which searches for, and records, spectra of narrowband signals in the IF band of an observatory receiver. Data taken with this system over 35 days at the Hat Creek Radio Observatory at 1612 MHz are discussed. Out of approximately 100,000 spectra processed during this period, 4000 were identified by the system as containing narrowband signals and were recorded. Subsequent analysis indicates that over 3900 of these are due to local RF contamination. The remainder are undergoing further investigation.

The effect of line damping, magneto-optics and parasitic light on the derivation of sunspot vector magnetic fields

The least square fitting of Stokes observations of sunspots using a Milne-Eddington-Unno model appears to lead, in many circumstances, to various inconsistencies such as anomalously large doppler widths and, hence, small magnetic fields which are significantly below those inferred solely from the Zeeman splitting in the intensity profile. It is found that the introduction of additional physics into the model such as the inclusion of damping wings and magneto-optic birefrigence significantly improves the fit to Stokes parameters. Model fits excluding the intensity profile, i.e., of both magnitude as well as spectral shape of the polarization parameters alone, suggest that parasitic light in the intensity profile may also be a source of inconsistencies. The consequences of the physical changes on the vector properties of the field derived from the Fe I lambda 6173 line for the 17 November 1975 spot as well as on the thermodynamic state are discussed. A Doppler width delta lambda (D) - 25mA is bound to be consistent with a low spot temperature and microturbulence, and a damping constant of a = 0.2.

Using the Very Large Array (VLA) and other radio telescopes to perform a parasitic search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI)

This paper describes several attempts to utilize various radio telescopes in a manner that is termed 'parasitic', that is in a manner that does not interrupt or seriously impact the standard astronomical observing programs in progress at the radio observatories. In the extreme case, only recorded astronomical data are accessed off-line, after the fact, without any burden on the observatory at all.

Microstrip subarray with coplanar and stacked parasitic elements

A parasitic subarray configuration combining the coplanar and stacked geometries is proposed and studied. It is numerically shown that a two-layer cross offers a gain enhancement of several decibels compared with either the coplanar cross or the two-layer electromagnetically coupled antenna. Preliminary experimental results appear to be in agreement with this estimate.

Testing For Parasitic Lasing With Controlled Retroreflection

Controlled-retroreflection technique provides new capability to test safely for parasitic oscillations in laser. Continuously variable reflector adjusted continuously over dynamic range of about 3 decades by rotation of quarter-wave plate about optical axis. Neutral-density filter establishes maximum reflectivity. By selection of neutral-density filters and continuous adjustment, reflector made to have any reflectivity from about 1 down to 10 to the negative 8th power.

Device Physics Analysis of Parasitic Conduction Band Barrier Formation in SiGe HBTs

This paper presents a physics-based model describing the current-induced formation of a parasitic barrier in the conduction band at the base collector heterojunction in npn SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs). Due to the valence band discontinuity DELTA E(sub v), hole injection into the collector at the onset of base pushout is impeded, which gives rise to formation of a barrier to electron transport which degrades the device's high frequency performance. In this paper, we present results from an analytical model for the height of the barrier calculated from the device's structure as a function of the collector junction bias and collector current density.

Silicon base plate with low parasitic electrical interference for sensors

A microgyroscope has a baseplate made of the same material as the rest of the microgyroscope. The baseplate is a silicon baseplate having a heavily p-doped epilayer covered by a thick dielectric film and metal electrodes. The metal electrodes are isolated from the ground plane by the dielectric. This provides very low parasitic capacitive coupling between the electrodes. The thick dielectric reduces the capacitance between the electrodes and the ground plane.

Remote Sensing of Parasitic Nematodes in Plants

A method and apparatus for remote sensing of parasitic nematodes in plants, now undergoing development, is based on measurement of visible and infrared spectral reflectances of fields where the plants are growing. Initial development efforts have been concentrated on detecting reniform nematodes (Rotylenchulus reniformis) in cotton plants, because of the economic importance of cotton crops. The apparatus includes a hand-held spectroradiometer. The readings taken by the radiometer are processed to extract spectral reflectances at sixteen wavelengths between 451 and 949 nm that, taken together, have been found to be indicative of the presence of Rotylenchulus reniformis. The intensities of the spectral reflectances are used to estimate the population density of the nematodes in an area from which readings were taken.

Effects of Parasitic Reactance on Lattice Circuit Slotline Switch

A slotline lattice switch has recently been proposed and demonstrated. In that paper, ideal diode characteristics were assumed. In this paper, the effects of parasitic reactances, due to the diode and the wire bonds that connect it to the circuit, are investigated. The switch is compared to a traditional slotline switch with a single diode across the slot.

Online Prediction of Battery Discharge and Estimation of Parasitic Loads for an Electric Aircraft

Predicting whether or not vehicle batteries contain sufficient charge to support operations over the remainder of a given flight plan is critical for electric aircraft. This paper describes an approach for identifying upper and lower uncertainty bounds on predictions that aircraft batteries will continue to meet output power and voltage requirements over the remainder of a flight plan. Battery discharge prediction is considered here in terms of the following components; (i) online battery state of charge estimation; (ii) prediction of future battery power demand as a function of an aircraft flight plan; (iii) online estimation of additional parasitic battery loads; and finally, (iv) estimation of flight plan safety. Substantial uncertainty is considered to be an irremovable part of the battery discharge prediction problem. However, high-confidence estimates of flight plan safety or lack of safety are shown to be generated from even highly uncertain prognostic predictions.

Early Burn-In Parasitic Conduction in 500 °C Durable SiC JFET ICs

All prior reports of long-term 500 °C operation of SiC JFET-R ICs have noted the existence of an initial “burn-in” period of changes in measured electrical characteristics for the first few hundred hours oven-testing. This work reports measurements of “burn-in parasitic MOSFET conduction” that can substantially impact the performance of some circuits during initial heat-up of JFET ICs, but then subsequently disappears after a few hours of operation at 500 °C. The behavior appears generally consistent with the known MOS phenomenon of bias-temperature driven redistribution of mobile ionic contamination. Approaches for further mitigating this initial burn-in conduction mechanism are discussed.

Submicron Thickness Characterization of Poly-Si Thin Films on Textured Surfaces by X-Ray Diffraction for Minimizing Parasitic Absorption in Poly-Si/SiO2 Passivating Contact Cells

Poly-Si/SiO2 passivating contacts have shown great potential for industry-relevant next-generation solar cells. Previous work has demonstrated an improved Jsc from dry reactive ion etching in an SF6 environment, using front metal grids as a self-aligned mask. Here, we show an effective method to measure the front poly-Si thickness on an alkaline textured surface using X-ray diffraction. The calculated thicknesses are compared with cross-section SEM analysis and Quokka simulation. We show that by thinning the front poly-Si from 200 nm to 60 nm, Jsc increases by 2.4 mA/cm2, leading to an absolute efficiency gain of 1.73%. Finally, we discuss possible reasons for the premature loss of passivation before the removal of all poly-Si.

Bleach Rescues Nannochloropsis from an Obligate Parasite and Alters Microbial and Metabolite Signatures of Outdoor Cultures

Chemical agents are commonly used to protect algal crops. Yet, few studies have characterized the effects of these agents on associated microbial communities to understand effects on microbial functions relevant to algal crop production and protection. Here, we used shotgun metagenomic sequencing and untargeted exometabolite profiling to link the application of bleach, a -cidal agent used to protect algae from pests, to changes in community composition, metabolic pathways, and exometabolies - at a whole community level. Bleach protected the algal crop from crashing but altered bacterial diversity. Analysis of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) revealed a classic predator-prey cycle between Oligoflexus and our target alga Nannochloropsis. Olifoflexus genomes from our study were notably similar to a previously identified BALO (Bdellovibrio and like organism), FD111, known to kill Nannochloropsis cultures, providing strong evidence that an FD111-like organism was responsible for the crash. Metabolic pathway composition differed between bleached and unbleached ponds, with abundance of twelve pathways related to stress tolerance, including the superpathway of methylglyoxal degradation, lipid IVA biosynthesis, and ectoine biosynthesis, greater in bleached ponds compared to unbleached ponds. Virulence factors related to adherence, biofilm formation, motility, and pathogenicity increased dramatically in bleached ponds with time, although this increase was not coupled with an increase in pathogens - algal or otherwise - or a decline in algal health. Our study highlights the importance of coupling 16S rRNA gene sequencing with whole genome data and other -omics tools to sketch a larger picture of community structure and function in crop systems. Moreover, our results highlight that continued long-term bleaching may lead to negative effects to crop health or downstream adverse health effects to humans or animals, depending on the algal product (i.e. human supplements or animal feedstocks). Future work on alternative treatment methods that would reduce resistance is necessary in the field.
