Novel observation of isospin structure of short-range correlations in calcium isotopes

Short Range Correlations (SRCs) have been identiffed as being responsible for the high momentum tail of the nucleon momentum distribution, n(k). Hard, short-range interactions of nucleon pairs generate the high momentum tail and imprint a universal character on n(k) for all nuclei at large momentum. Triple coincidence experiments have shown a strong dominance of np pairs, but these measurements involve large final state interactions. This paper presents the results from Jefferson Lab experiment E08014 which measured inclusive electron scattering cross-section from Ca isotopes. Here, by comparing the inclusive cross section from 48 Ca to 40 Ca in a kinematic region dominated by SRCs we provide a new way to study the isospin structure of SRCs.

Noniterative finite amplitude methods for E 1 and M 1 giant resonances

The finite amplitude method (FAM) is a very efficient approach for solving the fully self-consistent random-phase approximation (RPA) equations. We use FAM to rederive the RPA matrices for Skyrme functionals, calculate the electric dipole ( E 1) and the magnetic dipole ( M 1) giant resonances, and compare the results with available experimental and evaluated data. For the E 1 transitions in heavy nuclei, the calculations reproduce well the resonance energy of the photoabsorption cross sections. In the case of M 1 transitions, we show that the residual interaction does not affect the transition strength of double-magic nuclei, which suggests that the spin terms in the Skyrme force currently neglected in the present computation could improve the agreement between FAM and experimental data.

Investigation of B 11 and Ca 40 levels at 8–9 MeV by nuclear resonance fluorescence

Here, we report on the measurement of 11 B and 40 Ca levels between excitation energies of 8 and 9 MeV using nuclear resonance fluorescence (NRF). The experiment was carried out with nearly monoenergetic and linearly polarized photon beams provided by the High-Intensity γ-ray Source (HIγS) facility at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). States in 11 B are important for calibrations of NRF measurements, while the properties of 40 Ca levels impact potassium nucleosynthesis in globular clusters. For 40 Ca, we report on improved excitation energies and an unambiguous 2¯ assignment for the state at 8425 keV. For 11 B, we obtained improved values for γ-ray multipolarity mixing ratios and branching ratios of the 8920-keV level.

Model-independent determination of the dipole response of 66 Zn using quasimonoenergetic and linearly polarized photon beams

Background: Photon strength functions are an important ingredient in calculations relevant for the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements. The relation to the photoabsorption cross section allows to experimentally constrain photon strength functions by investigating the photoresponse of atomic nuclei. Purpose: Here, we determine the photoresponse of 66 Zn in the energy region of 5.6 MeV to 9.9 MeV and analyze the contribution of the 'elastic' decay channel back to the ground state. In addition, for the elastic channel electric and magnetic dipole transitions were separated. Methods: Nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments were performed using a linearly polarized quasi-monoenergetic photon beam at the High Intensity γ-ray Source. Photon beam energies from 5.6 to 9.9 MeV with an energy spread of about 3% were selected in steps of 200–300 keV. Two high purity germanium detectors were used for the subsequent γ-ray spectroscopy. Results: Full photoabsorption cross sections are extracted from the data making use of the monoenergetic character of the photon beam. For the ground-state decay channel, the average contribution of electric and magnetic dipole strengths is disentangled. The average branching ratio back to the ground state is determined as well. Conclusions: The new results indicate lower cross sections when compared to the values extracted from a former experiment using bremsstrahlung on 66 Zn. In the latter, the average branching ratio to the ground state is estimated from statistical-model calculations in order to analyze the data. Corresponding estimates from statistical-model calculations underestimate this branching ratio compared to the values extracted from the present analysis, which would partly explain the high cross sections determined from the bremsstrahlung data.

Measurement of spin-density matrix elements in ρ ( 770 ) production with a linearly polarized photon beam at E γ = 8.2 – 8.8 GeV

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab studies photoproduction of mesons using linearly polarized 8.5GeV photons impinging on a hydrogen target which is contained within a detector with near-complete coverage for charged and neutral particles. We present measurements of spin-density matrix elements for the photoproduction of the vector meson rho(770). The statistical precision achieved exceeds that of previous experiments for polarized photoproduction in this energy range by orders of magnitude. Here we confirm a high degree of s-channel helicity conservation at small squared four-momentum transfer t and are able to extract the t-dependence of natural and unnatural-parity exchange contributions to the production process in detail. We confirm the dominance of natural-parity exchange over the full t range. We also find that helicity amplitudes in which the helicity of the incident photon and the photoproduced rho(770) differ by two units are negligible for -t<0.5GeV 2 /c 2 .

Extended SAID partial-wave analysis of pion photoproduction

A unified Chew-Mandelstam description of single-pion photoproduction data, together with pion- and η-hadroproduction data, has been extended to include measurements carried out over the last decade. We consider photodecay amplitudes evaluated at the pole with particular emphasis on ηγ couplings and the influence of weighting on our fits. Both energy-dependent and single-energy analysis (energy-binned data) are considered.

Extended Interacting Boson Model with Configuration Mixing Description For 98 Mo

An extended version of the interacting boson model (IBM), encompassing two-particle–two-hole (2p-2h) excitations originating from below a valence shell and one-particle–one-hole (1p-1h) excitations extending to the upper next-nearest major shell, is developed to investigate cross-shell excitation effects in the transitional nucleus 98 Mo. This extended IBM framework is utilized to reproduce experimentally observed properties such as low-lying positive-parity level energies, 𝐵⁡(𝐸⁢2) values, and the electric quadrupole moment of the 2$^{+}_{1}$ state, 𝜌 2 ⁡(𝐸⁢0, 0$^{+}_{2}$ → 0$^{+}_{g}$), as well as the strength functions of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) and the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance (ISGQR) in 98 Mo. It is shown that the extended consistent-𝑄 IBM, incorporating configuration mixing of both 2p-2h excitations from below the valence shell and 1p-1h excitations to the upper next-nearest major shell, describes the low-lying structural properties and the ISGMR and ISGQR strength distributions of 98 Mo quite well, with the ISGMR and the ISGQR strength distributions comparable to the results of the self-consistent quasiparticle random-phase approximation with Skyrme interactions.

Double-pion electroproduction off protons in deuterium: Quasifree cross sections and final-state interactions

Here, the single-differential and fully integrated cross sections for quasi-free $π^+π^-$ electroproduction off protons bound in deuterium have been extracted for the first time. The experimental data were collected at Jefferson Laboratory with the CLAS detector. The measurements were performed in the kinematic region of the invariant mass W from 1.3 GeV to 1.825 GeV and photon virtuality Q 2 from 0.4 GeV2 to 1.0 GeV 2 . Sufficient experimental statistics allow for narrow binning in all kinematic variables, while maintaining a small statistical uncertainty. The extracted cross sections were compared with the corresponding cross sections off free protons, which allowed us to obtain an estimate of the contribution from events in which interactions between the final-state hadrons and the spectator neutron took place.

Transition width of the of the $J$ $π$ = $1$ – two-phonon state of $88$ $Sr$

The ground-state decay width of the two-phonon $J$ $π$ = $1$ – , 4742 keV state of 88 Sr has been determined with the relative self-absorption method combined with a monoenergetic photon beam. This width is important to determine the decay transition strengths into the ground state and the one-phonon $2$$^{+}_{1}$ and $3$$^{–}_{1}$ levels which are required to verify the two-phonon character of the $J$ $π$ = $1$ – state. Here, the experiment was performed at the High Intensity γ-ray Source (HI⁢ γ⁢S) using a novel experimental approach to adapt the relative self-absorption method to monoenergetic photon beams. The result for the ground-state decay width is, thus, independent of any calibration standard and confirms the two-phonon character of the 88 Sr, $J$ $π$ = $1$ – , 4742 keV state within an improved uncertainty.

Medium-induced photon bremsstrahlung in neutrino-nucleus, antineutrino-nucleus, and electron-nucleus scattering from multiple QED interactions

Interactions of charged leptons with nuclei and the naive tree-level kinematics of these processes are affected by radiation of photons induced by the QED nuclear medium. We evaluate cross section modifications at leading orders of the number of correlated interactions inside the nucleus, known as the opacity expansion. We derive results for soft and collinear types of the bremsstrahlung at the first three orders in opacity and generalize them to higher orders. We present the leading in opacity energy spectra of soft and collinear photons and radiative energy loss inside the nucleus for experiments with lepton kinematics in the GeV energy range. At leading power of the Glauber soft-collinear effective field theory, the soft radiation is further resummed to all orders both in opacity and in the electromagnetic coupling constant. We find that the soft and collinear medium-induced radiation is vacuumlike, and additional corrections are power suppressed. Despite the negligible modification to the induced photon spectra, the nuclear medium-induced radiation sizably affects the broadening of charged leptons in the direction orthogonal to their propagation. Novel cross section ratios as possible signals of saturation in ultraperipheral collisions

We propose new cross section ratios in ultraperipheral A + A and p + A collisions (UPCs) as a potential experimental signal of saturation physics. We consider the ratio R 1 of elastic vector meson photoproduction cross section to the inclusive hadron or jet photoproduction cross section. The ratio can be measured in the γ + A and γ + p collisions taking place in the UPCs. We label the ratios R 1 ( A ) and R 1 ( p ) , respectively. Constructing the double ratio R UPC ( A ) = R 1 ( A ) / R 1 ( p ) , and performing a small- x calculation both in the quasiclassical approximation and by including small- x evolution, we observe that R UPC ( A ) exhibits a markedly different dependence on the nuclear atomic number inside and outside the saturation region. This result indicates that R UPC ( A ) and R 1 ( A ) measurements in UPCs may help in the experimental searches for the evidence of saturation physics. Measurement of photonuclear jet production in ultraperipheral Pb + Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector

In ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at the LHC, each nucleus acts a sources of high-energy real photons that can scatter off the opposing nucleus in ultraperipheral photonuclear (𝛾 + 𝐴) collisions. Hard scattering processes initiated by the photons in such collisions provide a novel method for probing nuclear parton distributions in a kinematic region not easily accessible to other measurements. ATLAS has measured production of dijet and multijet final states in ultraperipheral Pb + Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV using a dataset recorded in 2018 with an integrated luminosity of 1.72 nb −1 . Photonuclear final states are selected by requiring a rapidity gap in the photon direction; this selects events where one of the outgoing nuclei remains intact. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-𝑘 t algorithm with radius parameter, 𝑅 = 0.4. Triple-differential cross sections, unfolded for detector response, are measured and presented using two sets of kinematic variables. The first set consists of the total transverse momentum (𝐻 T ), rapidity, and mass of the jet system. The second set uses 𝐻 T and particle-level nuclear and photon parton momentum fractions, 𝑥 A and 𝑧 𝛾 , respectively. The results are compared with leading-order perturbative QCD calculations of photonuclear jet production cross sections, where all leading order predictions using existing fits fall below the data in the shadowing region. More detailed theoretical comparisons will allow these results to strongly constrain nuclear parton distributions, and these data provide results from the LHC directly comparable to early physics results at the planned Electron-Ion Collider.

Observation of the p η ' Cusp in the New Precise Beam Asymmetry Σ Data for γ p → p η

Data on the beam asymmetry Σ in the photoproduction of η mesons off protons are reported for tagged photon energies from 1130 to 1790 MeV (mass range from W = 1748 MeV to W = 2045 MeV). The data cover the full solid angle that allows for a precise moment analysis. For the first time, a strong cusp effect in a polarization observable has been observed that is an effect of a branch-point singularity at the pη' threshold [E γ = 1447 MeV (W = 1896 MeV)]. Here, the latest BnGa partial wave analysis includes the new beam asymmetry data and yields a strong indication for the N(1895)1/2 – nucleon resonance, demonstrating the importance of including all singularities for a correct determination of partial waves and resonance parameters.

Role of Chiral Two-Body Currents in 6 Li Magnetic Properties in Light of a New Precision Measurement with the Relative Self-Absorption Technique

A direct measurement of the decay width of the excited $0^+_1$ state of 6 Li using the relative self-absorption technique is reported. Our value of $Γ_{γ,0^{+}_{1}} → 1^{+}_{1}$ = 8.17 (14) stat. (11) syst. eV provides sufficiently low experimental uncertainties to test modern theories of nuclear forces. The corresponding transition rate is compared to the results of ab initio calculations based on chiral effective field theory that take into account contributions to the magnetic dipole operator beyond leading order. This allows for a precision test of the impact of two-body currents that enter at next-to-leading order.

Probing the Gluonic Structure of the Deuteron with J / ψ Photoproduction in d + Au Ultraperipheral Collisions

Understanding gluon density distributions and how they are modified in nuclei are among the most important goals in nuclear physics. In recent years, diffractive vector meson production measured in ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) at heavy-ion colliders has provided a new tool for probing the gluon density. In this Letter, we report the first measurement of J/psi photoproduction off the deuteron in UPCs at the center-of-mass energy root √S-NN = 200 GeV in d + Au collisions. The differential cross section as a function of momentum transfer -t is measured. In addition, data with a neutron tagged in the deuteron-going zero-degree calorimeter is investigated for the first time, which is found to be consistent with the expectation of incoherent diffractive scattering at low momentum transfer. Theoretical predictions based on the color glass condensate saturation model and the leading twist approximation nuclear shadowing model are compared with the data quantitatively. A better agreement with the saturation model has been observed. With the current measurement, the results are found to be directly sensitive to the gluon density distribution of the deuteron and the deuteron breakup process, which provides insights into the nuclear gluonic structure.
