ATLAS, an integrated structural analysis and design system. Volume 5: System demonstration problems

One of a series of documents describing the ATLAS System for structural analysis and design is presented. A set of problems is described that demonstrate the various analysis and design capabilities of the ATLAS System proper as well as capabilities available by means of interfaces with other computer programs. Input data and results for each demonstration problem are discussed. Results are compared to theoretical solutions or experimental data where possible. Listings of all input data are included.

ATLAS, an integrated structural analysis and design system. Volume 6: Design module theory

The automated design theory underlying the operation of the ATLAS Design Module is decribed. The methods, applications and limitations associated with the fully stressed design, the thermal fully stressed design and a regional optimization algorithm are presented. A discussion of the convergence characteristics of the fully stressed design is also included. Derivations and concepts specific to the ATLAS design theory are shown, while conventional terminology and established methods are identified by references.

Integrated Structural and Cable Connector

Ball-and-socket coupling includes fiber-optic cable. Three steps couple two parts of fiber-optic cable: ball is inserted into socket; cone is released in, and cable moves toward plug. Sleeve is pulled to end of its travel and cable and plug are mated. Device is a quick-connect/disconnect coupling that has application in hazardous environments, such as space, undersea and nuclear installations.

The challenging scales of the bird: Shuttle tile structural integrity

The principal design issues, tests, and analyses required to solve the tile integrity problem on the space shuttle orbiters are addressed. Proof testing of installed tiles is discussed along with an airflow test of special tiles. Orbiter windshield tiles are considered in terms of changes necessary to ensure acceptable margins of safety for flight.

The following Get Away Special (GAS) ejection system components were analyzed: full diameter motorized door assembly (FDMDA); actuating assembly; gas ejection system; lower end plate; and the battery boxes. Special considerations and experiment constraints are also discussed.

Integrated structural analysis and design using 3-D finite elements

The optimum design of the shape of a hole in a plate in tension is obtained with a design algorithm based on partially converged analysis. The plate is modeled by three-dimensional finite elements, and an EBE PCG iterative solution algorithm is used for solving the equations of equilibrium. Several parametrizations of the optimum shape are considered, and it is found that a sine series can describe the optimum shape with only three design variables. The optimum shape compares well with an experimental optimum obtained by Durelli.

Evaluation of the heat transfer module (FAHT) of Failure Analysis Nonlinear Thermal And Structural Integrated Code (FANTASTIC)

The heat transfer module of FANTASTIC Code (FAHT) is studied and evaluated to the extend possible during the ten weeks duration of this project. A brief background of the previous studies is given and the governing equations as modeled in FAHT are discussed. FAHT's capabilities and limitations based on these equations and its coding methodology are explained in detail. It is established that with improper choice of element size and time step FAHT's temperature field prediction at some nodes will be below the initial condition. The source of this unrealistic temperature prediction is identified and a procedure is proposed for avoiding this phenomenon. It is further shown that the proposed procedure will converge to an accurate prediction upon mesh refinement. Unfortunately due to lack of time FAHT's ability to accurately account for pyrolysis and surface ablation has not been verified. Therefore, at the present time it can be stated with confidence that FAHT can accurately predict the temperature field for a transient multi-dimensional, orthotropic material with directional dependence, variable property, with nonlinear boundary condition. Such a prediction will provide an upper limit for the temperature field in an ablating decomposing nozzle liner. The pore pressure field, however, will not be known.

NASA airframe structural integrity program

NASA initiated a research program with the long-term objective of supporting the aerospace industry in addressing issues related to the aging of the commercial transport fleet. The program combines advanced fatigue crack growth prediction methodology with innovative nondestructive examination technology with the focus on multi-stage damage (MSD) at rivited connections. A fracture mechanics evaluation of the concept of pressure proof testing the fuselage to screen for MSD was completed. A successful laboratory demonstration of the ability of the thermal flux method to detect disbonds at rivited lap splice joints was conducted. All long-term program elements were initiated, and the plans for the methodology verification program are being coordinated with the airframe manufacturers.

Assessment of aircraft structural integrity by detecting disbonds through ultrasonic scanning

A study of nondestructive evaluation of aircraft bonded joints using the contact scanning technique is presented. Reflected signals acquired through the contacting transducer characterize the test region as being bonded or disbonded. Ultrasonic signals are attenuated more rapidly in the bonded regions when compared to disbonded regions. A peak amplitude based method and an artificial neural network are used to classify the signals. Results obtained using an artificial neural network exhibited significant insensitivity to signal variation when compared to the peak amplitude. Very good agreement is observed between results obtained using the present technique and those obtained using immersion scanning.

Effects of Material Degradation on the Structural Integrity of Composite Materials: Experimental Investigation and Modeling of High Temperature Degradation Mechanisms

It has previously been demonstrated that simple coupled reaction-diffusion models can approximate the aging behavior of PMR-15 resin subjected to different oxidative environments. Based on empirically observed phenomena, a model coupling chemical reactions, both thermal and oxidative, with diffusion of oxygen into the material bulk should allow simulation of the aging process. Through preliminary modeling techniques such as this it has become apparent that accurate analytical models cannot be created until the phenomena which cause the aging of these materials are quantified. An experimental program is currently underway to quantify all of the reaction/diffusion related mechanisms involved. The following contains a summary of the experimental data which has been collected through thermogravimetric analyses of neat PMR-15 resin, along with analytical predictions from models based on the empirical data. Thermogravimetric analyses were carried out in a number of different environments - nitrogen, air and oxygen. The nitrogen provides data for the purely thermal degradation mechanisms while those in air provide data for the coupled oxidative-thermal process. The intent here is to effectively subtract the nitrogen atmosphere data (assumed to represent only thermal reactions) from the air and oxygen atmosphere data to back-figure the purely oxidative reactions. Once purely oxidative (concentration dependent) reactions have been quantified it should then be possible to quantify the diffusion of oxygen into the material bulk.

Neural-Net Processed Characteristic Patterns for Measurement of Structural Integrity of Pressure Cycled Components

A neural-net inspection process has been combined with a bootstrap training procedure and electronic holography to detect changes or damage in a pressure-cycled International Space Station cold plate to be used for cooling instrumentation. The cold plate was excited to vibrate in a normal mode at low amplitude, and the neural net was trained by example to flag small changes in the mode shape. The NDE (nondestructive-evaluation) technique is straightforward but in its infancy; its applications are ad-hoc and uncalibrated. Nevertheless previous research has shown that the neural net can detect displacement changes to better than 1/100 the maximum displacement amplitude. Development efforts that support the NDE technique are mentioned briefly, followed by descriptions of electronic holography and neural-net processing. The bootstrap training procedure and its application to detection of damage in a pressure-cycled cold plate are discussed. Suggestions for calibrating and quantifying the NDE procedure are presented.

Tools Lighten Designs, Maintain Structural Integrity

Collier Research Corporation of Hampton, Virginia, licensed software developed at Langley Research Center to reduce design weight through the use of composite materials. The first license of NASA-developed software, it has now been used in everything from designing next-generation cargo containers, to airframes, rocket engines, ship hulls, and train bodies. The company now has sales of the NASA-derived software topping $4 million a year and has recently received several Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contracts to apply its software to nearly all aspects of the new Orion crew capsule design.
