Thermocouple installation in thin-walled tubes

Brazing process attaches thermocouples to slot in type-347 stainless steel tube flush around its circumference. Electrolytic flashing with gold enhances brazing process. This installation procedure does not significantly change calibration of thermocouples used and does not cause major wear spots in the thin-walled devices.

A program in refractory metal thermocouple research.

Description of a refractory metal thermocouple research program, directed towards establishing the parameters that are necessary to achieve reliable, long term, high temperature thermocouple performance. A description of special apparatus for exposing bare-wire thermoelements to high temperatures in vacuum and in high purity gaseous environments is given, and the design and performance of an ultra-high-vacuum, high-temperature furnace system are described. Bare-wire W-3 per cent Re and W-25 per cent Re thermoelements were exposed at 2400 K in argon, hydrogen, or vacuum, and experienced a shift in their emf-temperature relationship upon initial exposure. After the initial shift, the thermoelements exposed in the gaseous environments experienced no significant further change in their emf-temperature relationship for periods up to 1000 hrs. The thermoelements exposed in vacuum continually drifted in their emf-temperature relationship as a result of the preferential loss of Re by evaporation.

Thermocouple tape

A thermocouple which may be rolled as a tape until needed and a method of making it are described. Thermoelectrically different metals are applied to a strip of electrically nonconductive material in longitudinally overlapping relationship. Apertures may be provided along the tape in overlapping region at predetermined intervals. An adhesive material is applied to the side of the tape opposite the thermoelectric metals either before or after the thermoelectric metals are deposited. The tape may be cut or torn to form a thermocouple device which is ready for application to a body whose temperature is to be monitored or measured.

Surface heat flux determination: An analytical and experimental study using a single embedded thermocouple

A numerical method by which data from a single embedded thermocouple can be used to predict the transient thermal environment for both high- and low-conductivity materials is described. The results of an investigation performed to verify the method clearly demonstrate that accurate, transient, surface heating conditions can be obtained from a thermocouple l.016 centimeters from the heating surface in a low-conductivity material. Space shuttle orbiter thermal protection system materials having temperature- and pressure-dependent properties, and typical orbiter entry heating conditions were used to verify the accuracy of the analytical procedure. Analytically generated, as well as experimental, data were used to compare predicted and measured surface temperatures.

Thermocouple, multiple junction reference oven

An improved oven for maintaining the junctions of a plurality of reference thermocouples at a common and constant temperature is described. The oven is characterized by a cylindrical body defining a heat sink with axially extended-cylindrical cavity a singularized heating element which comprises a unitary cylindrical heating element consisting of a resistance heating coil wound about the surface of metallic spool with an axial bore defined and seated in the cavity. Other features of the oven include an annular array of radially extended bores defined in the cylindrical body and a plurality of reference thermocouple junctions seated in the bores in uniformly spaced relation with the heating element, and a temperature sensing device seated in the axial bore for detecting temperature changes as they occur in the spool and circuit to apply a voltage across the coil in response to detected drops in temperatures of the spool.

Self-heated thermocouples for far-infrared detection

A novel self-heated Bi-Sb thermocouple for far-infrared detection has been developed. The detector is suitable for integration with monolithic antennas and imaging arrays. The device is fabricated in a single photolithography masking step using a photoresist-bridge technique. This bridge technique has also been used to make microbolometers with lower 1/f noise than those made by two conventional masking steps. The thermocouples have a noise equivalent power of 7 x 10 to the -10th W/sq rt of Hz and a 3-dB frequency response of 150 kHz.

Advanced thin film thermocouples

The fabrication, materials characterization, and performance of thin film platinum rhodium thermocouples on gas turbine alloys was investigated. The materials chosen for the study were the turbine blade alloy systems MAR M200+Hf with NiCoCrAlY and FeCrAlY coatings, and vane alloy systems MAR M509 with FeCrAlY. Research was focussed on making improvements in the problem areas of coating substrate stability, adhesion, and insulation reliability and durability. Diffusion profiles between the substrate and coating with and without barrier coatings of Al2O3 are reported. The relationships between fabrication parameters of thermal oxidation and sputtering of the insulator and its characterization and performance are described. The best thin film thermocouples were fabricated with the NiCoCrAlY coatings which were thermally oxidized and sputter coated with Al2O3.

Lag compensation of optical fibers or thermocouples to achieve waveform fidelity in dynamic gas pyrometry

Fidelity of waveform reproduction requires constant amplitude ratio and constant time lag of a temperature sensor's indication, at all frequencies of interest. However, heat-transfer type sensors usually cannot satisfy these requirements. Equations for the actual indication of a thermocouple and an optical-fiber pyrometer are given explicitly, in terms of sensor and flowing-gas properties. A practical, realistic design of each type of sensor behaves like a first-order system with amplitude-ratio attenuation inversely proportional to frequency when the frequency exceeds the corner frequency. Only at much higher frequencies does the amplitude-ratio attenuation for the optical fiber sensor become inversely proportional to the square root of the frequency. Design options for improving the frequency response are discussed. On-line electrical lag compensation, using a linear amplifier and a passive compensation network, can extend the corner frequency of the thermocouple 100-fold or more; a similar passive network can be used for the optical-fiber sensor. Design details for these networks are presented.

Measuring Inhomogeneities In Thermocouple Wires

Spools rotated to pull thermocouple wires through liquid nitrogen, while output voltage of thermocouple recorded on strip chart. Wires exposed to severe temperature gradients, amounting to overall change of 200 degrees C, where they enter and leave liquid nitrogen. If wires homogeneous, net output voltage zero. If inhomogeneity passes through liquid-nitrogen/air interface, resulting deviation of output voltage from zero seen immediately on strip chart. If inhomogeneity greater than allowable, reels stopped temporarily so inhomogeneity tagged before wound onto takeup reel.

Heat flux measurements on ceramics with thin film thermocouples

Two methods were devised to measure heat flux through a thick ceramic using thin film thermocouples. The thermocouples were deposited on the front and back face of a flat ceramic substrate. The heat flux was applied to the front surface of the ceramic using an arc lamp Heat Flux Calibration Facility. Silicon nitride and mullite ceramics were used; two thicknesses of each material was tested, with ceramic temperatures to 1500 C. Heat flux ranged from 0.05-2.5 MW/m2(sup 2). One method for heat flux determination used an approximation technique to calculate instantaneous values of heat flux vs time; the other method used an extrapolation technique to determine the steady state heat flux from a record of transient data. Neither method measures heat flux in real time but the techniques may easily be adapted for quasi-real time measurement. In cases where a significant portion of the transient heat flux data is available, the calculated transient heat flux is seen to approach the extrapolated steady state heat flux value as expected.
