The "International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) Battery History and Performance" report provides the information on the cell/battery design, battery performance during the thirty eight (38) solar eclipse seasons and the end-of-life test data. It is noteworthy that IUE spacecraft was an in-house project and that the batteries were designed, fabricated and tested (Qualification and Acceptance) at the Goddard Space Flight Center. A detailed information is given on the cell and battery design criteria and the designs, on the Qualification and the Acceptance tests, and on the cell life cycling tests. The environmental, thermal, and vibration tests were performed on the batteries at the battery level as well as with the interface on the spacecraft. The telemetry data were acquired, analyzed, and trended for various parameters over the mission life. Rigorous and diligent battery management programs were developed and implemented from time to time to extend the mission life over eighteen plus years. Prior to the termination of spacecraft operation, special tests were conducted to check the battery switching operation, battery residual capacity, third electrode performance and battery impedance.
The development of a modeling tool to optimize the design of a thermal radiator based on capacity, rejection temperature, geometry, type and coolant is presented. The radiator size is determined from the desired capacity, environmental conditions and rejection temperature. Flow through the radiator is derived from the overall heat load and prescribed inlet to outlet delta temperature for a given coolant. The tool considers radiator geometry (i.e., tube spacing and diameter, face-sheet thickness, overall size, etc.) and general type (i.e., parallel/manifold versus serpentine) in the optimization. Selection from a handful of potential coolants is also available in the tool which primarily affects necessary tube diameter to maintain turbulent flow and minimize pressure drop. An Equivalent System Mass (ESM) approach is utilized to include pump power in the optimization. Results from the tool and potential future enhancements are also discussed.

Low temperature battery for space probe
Interactions between the ambient atmosphere and orbiting spacecraft, sounding rockets, and suborbital vehicles, and with their effluents, give rise to optical (extreme UV to LWIR) foreground radiation which constitutes noise that raises the detection threshold for terrestrial and celestial radiations, as well as military targets. Researchers review the current information on the on-orbit optical contamination. Its source species are created in interaction processes that can be grouped into three categories: (1) Reactions in the gas phase between the ambient atmosphere and desorbates and exhaust; (2) Reactions catalyzed by exposed ram surfaces, which occur spontaneously even in the absence of active material releases from the vehicles; and (3) Erosive excitative reactions with exposed bulk (organic) materials, which have recently been identified in the laboratory though not as yet observed on spacecraft. Researchers also assess the effect of optical pumping by earthshine and sunlight of both reaction products and effluents.
Multisweep cyclic voltammetry for electrochemical characterization of systems for secondary battery application
The mARC II is a 30 kW arc-jet facility at NASA Ames Research Center used to generate high-enthalpy flows for low-cost thermal protection system (TPS) technology development. Sustained operation of downstream instrumentation and material samples is constrained by thermal loading transmitted through the arc-jet test environment, limiting achievable run times and experimental throughput. This work presents the design, integration, and validation of a cooling sleeve implemented on the sweep arm drive motor feedthrough to mitigate thermal accumulation during testing. The addition of the cooling sleeve is a simple, robust upgrade that translates directly into enhanced facility capability by supporting longer run durations, reduced turnaround time, and higher throughput.

Primary arcing induced by spacecraft charging presents a significant hazard to thin film solar cells if left unchecked. Here, we present the results of a preliminary effort to quantify the impacts of primary arcing to perovskite solar cells. Solar cells operating in a charged environment are susceptible to electrostatic discharges known as arcing. While primary arcs are not generally considered a major concern for traditional space PV, for thin film cells, these can induce significant heating and subsequent damage. We conducted ESD testing in a LEO-like plasma in the National Plasma Interaction Facility at NASA Glenn Research Center to quantify impacts to cell performance by arcing. The perovskites tested saw a decrease of short circuit current with an increased number of arcs, averaging a relative change of 73.89 ± 15.90% after 60 total arcs supplied a cumulative energy dose of 76.12 mJ to the string. Ongoing work entails testing with larger perovskite data sets and expanding to include additional thin film cell technologies to demonstrate the risk unmitigated primary arcing presents.
