Technologist in Residence for Advanced Manufacturing and Materials in Unconventional Oil and Gas Equipment and Infrastructure

The DOE Technologist in Residence (TIR) program pairs a senior technical staff member from a National Laboratory (Lab Technologist), and a senior technical staff member(s) from a clean energy manufacturing company or consortium of companies (Industry Technologist). Each technologist may represent single or multiple national laboratories, or single or multiple companies. These pairs of Lab and industry technologists work together for a period of 18 to 24 months to accomplish several goals: 1) Identify the participating company’s (or companies’) technical priorities and challenges, and the resources and capabilities in DOE’s National Laboratories that may be highly suitable to address them; 2) Propose collaborative R&D efforts to develop science-based solutions to the company’s (or companies’) most strategic scientific, technological, and business issues; and 3) Develop a general framework agreement and begin developing specific scopes of work for the proposed collaborative R&D efforts. The proposed R&D will then take place outside of the program and will not use TIR program funds. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Pioneer Natural Resources were awarded a TIR project by DOE in late 2016 and the CRADA component of the project was initiated in 2017. This report describes work performed under the CRADA agreement between 2017 and 2020.

Manufacturability Advancement of Low-Temperature Titanium Electroplating Methods

Three tasks were proposed for this work. All three were completed. The tasks were as follows: Task 1: A larger plating system will be purchased for process scale-up. TiF 3 will be tested as the metal precursor in an effort to reduce water sensitivity of the process. Task 2: Ti on steel samples will be created at PNNL and shipped to Atlas Technologies. Atlas Technologies will diffusion bond the samples to aluminum and test the bond strength. The results will be reported to PNNL. Task 3: Investigation into DOE mission relevant Ti and Zr alloys and demonstration on larger scale work pieces.

Summary: Nuclear Energy Critical Material Waste Reduction and Supply Chain Solutions Enabled by Advanced Manufacturing

In September 2020, the U.S. government issued an executive order to address the threat to the domestic supply chain from its reliance on critical minerals (CMs) from foreign competitors and to support the domestic mining and processing industry. A national strategy on CMs with impact on the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) vision for 2021–2031 was developed. This vision embraces science and technology to re-establish U.S. competitiveness in the CM and material supply chains by (a) scientific innovation and technologies to ensure resilient and secure CMs and maintain a domestic material supply chain, (b) building a long-term minerals and materials innovation ecosystem to foster new capabilities to mitigate CM supply chain challenges, (c) increasing private sector adoption for sustaining the domestic CM supply chain, and (d) coordinating with international partners and federal agencies to diversify global supply chains and ensure the adoption of best practices for sustainable mining and processing (DOE 2021).

Megawatt-Class, High-Voltage SiC Power Electronics Converters for Advanced Manufacturing with Grid Support Services

DE-EE0009135 aimed to push the 10kV SiC MOSFET based power electronics to 3-phase 13.8kV 10MW to be used as a Megawatt Class Medium-Voltage Power Conditioning Systems – PCS – to enable “Resilient Distribution through Grid-dispatching and Uninterrupted Quality Power to Manufacturing Facilities” during transitory grid disturbances. As a stretch to those goals, Eaton added the load power peak shaving opportunity.

The Implications of Advanced Manufacturing in a Connected Economy Moving Towards a Smart, Sustainable, and Productive Economy

This report intends to provide a comprehensive overview of information and communications technologies (ICT), which play increasingly vital roles in the United States (U.S.) and global economies and continue to evolve rapidly as both technological capabilities and needs grow in tandem. To underscore the importance of the sector, the U.S. Congress recently passed a $\$$20–$\$$50 billion federal program Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors Act (CHIPS Act) to spur the competitiveness of the U.S. semiconductor industry and encourage U.S. investment, often complemented by state-level incentives (Kessler 2022).

Multi-Scale Design And Advanced Manufacturing Of Seismic Metamaterials (CRADA Final Report)

As part of the Cyclotron Road program, METAseismic sought to investigate a multi-scale approach, both in terms of manufacturing and design, for seismic metamaterials with applications in the energy sector. Specifically, this project explored the feasibility of using nanofabrication to enable the incorporation of 3D nanostructured components into a mechanical metamaterial. These components were explored to increase the seismic resilience of our infrastructure to earthquakes, with the final aim of providing customized levels of protection for its components. This was envisioned as the base of a multi-scale design approach that consisted of using a multiplicity of metamaterial architectures ranging from the nano- to the meso-scale to address the stringent seismic design objectives of electric-power equipment.
