Control of robot dynamics using acceleration control

Acceleration control of robotic devices can provide improvements to many space-based operations using flexible manipulators and to ground-based operations requiring better precision and efficiency than current industrial robots can provide. This paper reports on a preliminary study of acceleration measurement on robotic motion during parabolic flights on the NASA KC-135 and a parallel study of accelerations with and without gravity arising from computer simulated motions using TREETOPS software.

Frequency Control and Dynamics (Part 1) [Slides]

This presentation provides an introductory overview of system dynamics and frequency control in electric power systems, with a focus on concepts relevant to small and interconnected grids such as those in Malawi. It explains foundational principles of AC system frequency, the relationship between generation-demand balance and frequency deviations, and the operational limits of generators and end-use equipment. The deck discusses frequency stability within broader system stability classifications and illustrates how inertia and turbine-governor dynamics shape system response to disturbances. It then outlines the tiered approach to frequency control - primary, secondary, and tertiary - detailing the roles, characteristics, timescales, and response mechanisms of each. Special emphasis is placed on hydro and thermal unit behavior, area control error (ACE), automatic generation control (AGC), and the operational implications of interconnecting small systems with larger grids. The material was developed to support Malawi's electricity sector and the establishment of the Southern Africa Battery Energy Storage Center of Excellence (SABESS CoE).

COFS 2: 3-D dynamics and controls technology

The Control of Flexible Structures (COFS) 2 project is a complex and ambitious undertaking which will address several critical technology areas. Among them are modeling, structural dynamics, controls, and ground testing issues which are not only germane to this effort, but to other large space structure programs being contemplated. This effort requires the early integration of controls and structural dynamics considerations in order to achieve mission success. Several technology advances must be achieved in the areas of system modelling, control synthesis and methodology, sensor/actuator development, and ground testing techniques for system evaluation and on-orbit performance prediction and verification. This project offers a unique opportunity for the integration of several disciplines to produce technology advances which will benefit many future programs. In addition, the opportunities available to participate in the various levels in the phase of this project, e.g., analytical development and modelling, ground testing, and flight testing, permit for the involvement of a significant number of interested researchers and organizations from government, universities and industry.

Integration of domain and resource-based reasoning for real-time control in dynamic environments

A real-time software controller that successfully integrates domain-based and resource-based control reasoning to perform task execution in a dynamically changing environment is described. The design of the controller is based on the concept of partitioning the process to be controlled into a set of tasks, each of which achieves some process goal. It is assumed that, in general, there are multiple ways (tasks) to achieve a goal. The controller dynamically determines current goals and their current criticality, choosing and scheduling tasks to achieve those goals in the time available. It incorporates rule-based goal reasoning, a TMS-based criticality propagation mechanism, and a real-time scheduler. The controller has been used to build a knowledge-based situation assessment system that formed a major component of a real-time, distributed, cooperative problem solving system built under DARPA contract. It is also being employed in other applications now in progress.

Gravity Probe-B Spacecraft attitude control based on the dynamics of slosh wave-induced fluid stress distribution on rotating dewar container of cryogenic propellant

The dynamical behavior of fluids, in particular the effect of surface tension on partially-filled rotating fluids, in a full-scale Gravity Probe-B Spacecraft propellant dewar tank imposed by various frequencies of gravity jitters have been investigated. Results show that fluid stress distribution exerted on the outer and inner walls of rotating dewar are closely related to the characteristics of slosh waves excited on the liquid-vapor interface in the rotating dewar tank. This can provide a set of tool for the spacecraft dynamic control leading toward the control of spacecraft unbalance caused by the uneven fluid stress distribution due to slosh wave excitations.

Modelling and simulation of Space Station Freedom berthing dynamics and control

A large-angle, flexible, multibody, dynamic modeling capability has been developed to help validate numerical simulations of the dynamic motion and control forces which occur during berthing of Space Station Freedom to the Shuttle Orbiter in the early assembly flights. This paper outlines the dynamics and control of the station, the attached Shuttle Remote Manipulator System, and the orbiter. The simulation tool developed for the analysis is described and the results of two simulations are presented. The first is a simulated maneuver from a gravity-gradient attitude to a torque equilibrium attitude using the station reaction control jets. The second simulation is the berthing of the station to the orbiter with the station control moment gyros actively maintaining an estimated torque equilibrium attitude. The influence of the elastic dynamic behavior of the station and of the Remote Manipulator System on the attitude control of the station/orbiter system during each maneuver was investigated. The flexibility of the station and the arm were found to have only a minor influence on the attitude control of the system during the maneuvers.

Dynamics and Controls of a Conceptual Jovian Moon Tour Spacecraft

The dynamics and control challenges presented by a conceptual Jovian Moon Tour spacecraft are summarized in this paper. Attitude and orbital dynamics interactions are present due to the designed low-thrust trajectory, and controls structure interactions are also present due to the non-collocated sensor-actuator pairs on board the flexible spacecraft. A finite-element based simulation model is described which is capable of handling the complex orbital and attitude dynamics arising during the low-thrust spiraling maneuvers of the spacecraft. A few numerical simulations demonstrate that some of the challenges hitherto identified can be faced via integrated dynamics and control analysis, and that reasonable assessments of the pointing performance can be made.

Avoidance control

Dynamical systems were considered, subject to control by two agents, one of whom desires that no trajectory of the system, emanating from outside a given set, intersects the set no matter what the admissible actions of the other agent. Conditions are given whose satisfaction assures that a given control results in avoidance. Furthermore, these conditions are constructive in that they yield an avoidance feedback control. Some examples are presented.

Dynamics and control simulation of large space structures

Attention is given to the dynamics and control simulation techniques applicable to large space structures, encompassing the model of the large structure as well as models of its dynamics, its onboard controller, its sensor/actuator systems, and various disturbances to which it may be subjected. Control performance parameters must be computed as functions of time, or of such other design parameters as control gain. A large space antenna is used as an example of the structures in question, illustrating the way in which an efficient dynamics and control simulation structure program can be developed, and how antenna parameters such as reflector surface distortions can be computed, without having to solve a large number of equations for each computation time interval.

Safe Physics-Informed Machine Learning for Dynamics and Control

This tutorial paper focuses on safe physics-informed machine learning in the context of dynamics and control, providing a comprehensive overview of how to integrate physical models and safety guarantees. As machine learning techniques enhance the modeling and control of complex dynamical systems, ensuring safety and stability remains a critical challenge, especially in safety-critical applications like autonomous vehicles, robotics, medical decision-making, and energy systems. We explore various approaches for embedding and ensuring safety constraints, including structural priors, Lyapunov and Control Barrier Functions, predictive control, projections, and robust optimization techniques. Additionally, we delve into methods for uncertainty quantification and safety verification, including reachability analysis and neural network verification tools, which help validate that control policies remain within safe operating bounds even in uncertain environments. The paper includes illustrative examples demonstrating the implementation aspects of safe learning frameworks that combine the strengths of data-driven approaches with the rigor of physical principles, offering a path toward the safe control of complex dynamical systems.
