Thermal conductivity of filled RTV compounds

Sealant materials with high thermal conductivity, and electrically nonconductive were studied for applications. Alumina and other thermally conductive fillers were examined for room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) use. The guarded hot plate apparatus, and its operation are described, and results of the thermal conductivity tests are discussed. It was found that magnesium oxide is significantly better than aluminum oxide as a filler enhancing the thermal conductivity of RTV. Recommendations for future studies are included.

Mechanical behavior of polycrystalline ceramics: Brittle fracture of SiC-Si3N4 materials

Various properties of ceramic materials were investigated. Magnesium oxide and the role of anion impurities were investigated together with the slow crack growth in silicon nitride-silicon carbide ceramics. The oxide program involved development of fabrication techniques for anion doped materials and evaluation of the role of these anions in the hot pressing response, grain boundary diffusion of nickel doped material, grain boundary microhardness, and grain growth. The carbide-nitride work employed commercial materials and the research involved evaluation of a recently reported technique for study of slow crack growth and the development of data for these commercial materials.

Creation of a ceramics handbook

A group of common ceramic materials (alumina, magnesium oxide, silicon nitride, and silicon carbide) were characterized through literature searches according to their physical properties. The files used were the NASA file, DDC/GRA File, Engineering Index File and standard library searches. The results of these searches are arranged by material properties including mechanical, electrical, electromagnetic, where applicable, and fracture; and the entries are arranged in chronological order by candidate. A list, by author, follows where tabular information including charts and figures of results is given along with a brief statement of the results and conclusions. In both cases, information on the independent variables along with their range is given. The results of an extensive industry survey asking for names of other candidates on which information is lacking and also what type of service, if any, is desired in keeping a current information file on general ceramic materials.

Rolling-contact deformation of MgO single crystals

Magnesium oxide single crystals were used as a model bearing material and deformed by rolling contact with a steel ball 0.64 cm in diameter. A dependence of depth of slip on rolling velocity which persisted with increasing numbers of rolling-contact cycles was discovered. The track width, track hardness and dislocation interactions as observed by transmission electron microscopy all increased in a consistent manner with increasing cycles. The rolling-contact state of stress produces a high density of dislocations in a localized zone. Dislocation interaction in this zone produces cleavage-type cracks after a large number of rolling-contact cycles. The orientation of the crystal influences the character of dislocation accumulation.

Scattering of light from particulate surfaces. I - A laboratory assessment of multiple-scattering effects

In planetary applications it is sometimes important to know the degree to which multiple scattering is influencing the photometric properties of a surface. An investigation is conducted concerning the point at which the single-scattering approximation used in the theory developed by Hapke (1963) and Irvine (1966) breaks down. It is shown that the Hapke-Irvine photometric function provides an adequate representation of the scattering properties of particulate surfaces whose geometric albedos (or normal reflectances) do not exceed 0.3. An experiment is conducted to estimate the normal reflectance below which the Hapke-Irvine equation considered provides an adequate representation of the scattering properties of a particulate surface. The investigation makes use of a set of samples which were prepared by mixing magnesium oxide and charcoal powders. The samples have a range in normal reflectance from 0.04 to 1.04.

A universal equation of state for solids

The total energy versus interatomic spacing of ionic, metallic, covalent, and rare-gas solids is examined, and a universal form for pressure as a function of volume for all classes of solids in compression is derived. The relation is shown to hold for pressure-volume data for hydrogen and deuterium, xenon, cesium, molybdenum, sodium chloride, and magnesium oxide.

Measurements of complex permittivity of microwave substrates in the 20 to 300 K temperature range from 26.5 to 40.0 GHz

A knowledge of the dielectric properties of microwave substrates at low temperatures is useful in the design of superconducting microwave circuits. Results are reported for a study of the complex permittivity of sapphire (Al2O3), magnesium oxide (MgO), silicon oxide (SiO2), lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO3), and zirconium oxide (ZrO2), in the 20 to 300 Kelvin temperature range, at frequencies from 26.5 to 40.0 GHz. The values of the real and imaginary parts of the complex permittivity were obtained from the scattering parameters, which were measured using a HP-8510 automatic network analyzer. For these measurements, the samples were mounted on the cold head of a helium gas closed cycle refrigerator, in a specially designed vacuum chamber. An arrangement of wave guides, with mica windows, was used to connect the cooling system to the network analyzer. A decrease in the value of the real part of the complex permittivity of these substrates, with decreasing temperature, was observed. For MgO and Al2O3, the decrease from room temperature to 20 K was of 7 and 15 percent, respectively. For LaAlO3, it decreased by 14 percent, for ZrO2 by 15 percent, and for SiO2 by 2 percent, in the above mentioned temperature range.

Edge geometry superconducting tunnel junctions utilizing an NbN/MgO/NbN thin film structure

An edge defined geometry is used to produce very small area tunnel junctions in a structure with niobium nitride superconducting electrodes and a magnesium oxide tunnel barrier. The incorporation of an MgO tunnel barrier with two NbN electrodes results in improved current-voltage characteristics, and may lead to better junction noise characteristics. The NbN electrodes are preferably sputter-deposited, with the first NbN electrode deposited on an insulating substrate maintained at about 250 to 500 C for improved quality of the electrode.

Efficient second-harmonic conversion of CW single-frequency Nd:YAG laser light by frequency locking to a monolithic ring frequency doubler

Efficient second-harmonic conversion of the 1064-nm output of a diode-pumped CW single-frequency Nd:YAG laser to 532 nm was obtained by frequency locking the laser to a monolithic ring resonator constructed of magnesium-oxide-doped lithium niobate. The conversion efficiency from the fundamental to the second harmonic was 65 percent. Two hundred milliwatts of CW single-frequency 532-nm light were produced from 310 mW of power of 1064-nm light. This represents a conversion efficiency of 20 percent from the 1-W diode laser used to pump the Nd:YAG laser to single-frequency 532-nm output. No signs of degradation were observed for over 500 h of operation.
