Tantalum cathode improves electron-beam evaporation of tantalum

Tantalum cathode is used in assembly for electron beam evaporation of tantalum onto a substrate. The cathode and anode are made of pure tantalum rather than tungsten to prevent contamination of the tantalum film deposited on the substrate.

Dust particle injector for hypervelocity accelerators provides high charge-to-mass ratio

Injector imparts a high charge-to-mass ratio to microparticles and injects them into an electrostatic accelerator so that the particles are accelerated to meteoric speeds. It employs relatively large masses in the anode and cathode structures with a relatively wide separation, thus permitting a large increase in the allowable injection voltages.

Application of the solid lubricant molybdenum disulfide by sputtering

Molybdenum disulfide lubricant film is deposited on two substrates, niobium and nickel-chromium alloys, by means of physical direct-current sputtering. The sputtering system uses a three-electrode /triode/ geometry - a thermionic cathode, an anode, and the target, all enclosed in a vacuum chamber.

Evaluation of a pulsed quasi-steady MPD thruster and associated subsystems

The performance of quasi-steady magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thrusters at high power levels is discussed. An axisymmetric configuration is used for the MPD thruster, with various cathode and anode sizes, over a wide range of experimental conditions. Thrust is determined from impulse measurements with current waveforms, while instantaneous measurements are made for all other variables. It is demonstrated that the thrust produced has a predominately self-magnetic origin and is directly proportional to the square of the current. The complete set of impulse measurement data is presented.

Rechargeable Al/Cl2 battery with molten AlCl4/-/ electrolyte.

A molten salt system based on Al- and Cl2 carbon electrodes, with an AlCl3 alkali chloride eutectic as electrolyte, offers promise as a rechargeable, high energy density battery which can operate at a relatively low temperature. Electrode kinetic studies showed that the electrode reactions at the Al anode were rapid and that the observed passivation phenomena were due to the formation at the electrode surface of a solid salt layer resulting from concentration changes on anodic or cathodic current flow. It was established that carbon electrodes were intrinsically active for chlorine reduction in AlCl3-alkali chloride melts. By means of a rotating vitreous carbon disk electrode, the kinetic parameters were determined.

Pulsed electromagnetic gas acceleration

Detailed measurements of the axial velocity profile and electromagnetic structure of a high power, quasi-steady MPD discharge are used to formulate a gasdynamic model of the acceleration process. Conceptually dividing the accelerated plasma into an inner flow and an outer flow, it is found that more than two-thirds of the total power in the plasma is deposited in the inner flow, accelerating it to an exhaust velocity of 12.5 km/sec. The outer flow, which is accelerated to a velocity of only 6.2 km/sec, appears to provide a current conduction path between the inner flow and the anode. Related cathode studies have shown that the critical current for the onset of terminal voltage fluctuations, which was recently shown to be a function of the cathode area, appears to reach an asymptote for cathodes of very large surface area. Detailed floating potential measurements show that the fluctuations are confined to the vicinity of the cathode and hence reflect a cathode emission process rather than a fundamental limit on MPD performance.

Multitarget sequential sputtering apparatus

The development and characteristics of a sputtering apparatus are discussed. A potential difference is applied between the cathode and anode to produce a plasma for each target which is sputtered by accelerated ions within the plasma. The process of sputtering for various materials is described. Diagrams of the unit are provided.

Hydrogen-Bromine Secondary Battery

A secondary battery is described utilizing hydrogen and halogen as primary reactants. It comprises inert anode and cathode initially contacting an aqueous solution of an acid and an alkali metal bromide. The hydrogen generated during charging of the cell is stored as gas, while the bromine becomes dissolved predominantly in the lower layers of the acid electrolyte. Preferred components are phosphoric acid and lithium bromide.

Indirect resistance welding

Lap joints in thin-wall piping, tanks, and complex shapes are resistance-welded with both anode and cathode on same side of wall.

Annular arc accelerator shock tube

An annular arc accelerator shock tube employs a cold gas driver to flow a stream of gas from an expansion section through a high voltage electrode section to a test section, thus driving a shock wave in front of it. A glow discharge detects the shock wave and actuates a trigger generator which in turn fires spark-gap switches to discharge a bank of capacitors across a centered cathode and an annular anode in tandem electrode sections. The initial shock wave passes through the anode section from the cathode section thereby depositing energy into the flow gas without the necessity of any diaphragm opening in the gas flow from the expansion section through the electrode sections.

Electrolysis cell stimulation

Computer program represents attempt to understand and model characteristics of electrolysis cells. It allows user to determine how cell efficiency is affected by temperature, pressure, current density, electrolyte concentration, characteristic dimensions, membrane resistance, and electrolyte circulation rate. It also calculates ratio of bubble velocity to electrolyte velocity for anode and cathode chambers.

Sealed position sensitive hard X-ray detector having large drift region for all sky camera with high angular resolution

A sealed position sensitive proportional counter filled with two atmospheres of 95% xenon and 5% methane, and containing a drift region of 24 atm cm, has operated in a stable manner for many months. The detector contains G-10 frames to support the anode and cathode wires. The detector was sealed successfully by a combination of vacuum baking the G-10 frames at 150 C for two weeks followed by assembly into the detector in an environment of dry nitrogen, and the use of passive internal getters. The counter is intended for use with a circumferential cylindrical collimator. Together they provide a very broad field of view detection system with the ability to locate cosmic hard X-ray and soft gamma ray sources to an angular precision of a minute of arc. A set of instruments based on this principle have been proposed for satellites to detect and precisely locate cosmic gamma ray bursts.

Limiting current in electron-beam welders

Damage to workpiece by excessive current in electron-beam welder is prevented by mechanism that accurately adjusts anode-to-cathode spacing. Mechanism is installed on standard Sciaky (or equivalent) electron-beam gun with only minimal modification. By turning knurled knob and observing digital readout of anode/cathode separation, machine operator adjusts welder for safe maximum current before welding begins.

Improvement and scale-up of the NASA Redox storage system

A preprototype full-function 1.0 kW Redox system (2 kW peak) with 11 kW storage capacity has been built and integrated with the NASA/DOE photovoltaic test facility. The system includes four substacks of 39 cells each (1/3 sq ft active area) which are connected hydraulically in parallel and electrically in series. An open circuit voltage cell and a set of rebalance cells are used to continuously monitor the system state of charge and automatically maintain the anode and cathode reactants electrochemically in balance. Technological advances in membrane and electrodes and results of multicell stack tests are reviewed.
