Performance of metal meshes as a function of incidence angle

Inductive mesh transmission has been measured for the two major polarizations as a function of incidence angle. The experimental data agree well with Chen's (1970) waveguide theory in the thin mesh limit. As an aid in making more rapid predictions of mesh properties, Chen's theory is used to derive an empirical lumped circuit model. This model matches the theory and experiment to one percent over critical areas of transmission.

Interpretation of a class of in-flight lightning signatures

Data recorded on the NASA F-106B research aircraft during lightning strikes often reveals electric field waveforms which begin with a series of abrupt changes and end in an exponential variation. A possible interpretation of such events is that an ionized channel is completed to the aircraft during the time of the abrupt changes, and the charge on the aircraft dumps into this channel during the time of the exponential. An analysis of measured waveforms assuming a simple RC-circuit model has been carried out for one event, and the results include I = 1000 A, V = -650 kV, R = 1000 Ohms, and W = 100 J.

Experimental and simulation studies of hard contact in force reflecting teleoperation

Experiments and simulations of a single-axis force-reflecting teleoperation system have been conducted to investigate the problem of contacting a hard environment and maintaining a controlled force in teleoperation in which position is fed forward from the hand controller (master) to the manipulator (slave), and force is fed back to the human operator through motors in the master. The simulations, using an electrical circuit model, reproduce the behavior of the real system, including effects of human operator biomechanics. It is shown that human operator properties, which vary as a result of different types of grasp of the handle, affect the stability of the system in the hard-contact task. The effect of a heavier grasp on the handle is equivalent to increased hand-controller velocity damping in terms of the systems stability in the contact task, but control system damping sufficient to guarantee stable contact results in perceptible sluggishness of the control handle's response in free motion. These results suggest that human operator biomechanics must be taken into account to guarantee stable and ergonomic performance of advanced teleoperators.

Millimeter-wave diode-grid frequency doubler

Monolithic diode grids were fabricated on 2-cm square gallium-arsenide wafers in a proof-of-principle test of a quasi-optical varactor millimeter-wave frequency multiplier array concept. An equivalent circuit model based on a transmission-line analysis of plane wave illumination was applied to predict the array performance. The doubler experiments were performed under far-field illumination conditions. A second-harmonic conversion efficiency of 9.5 percent and output powers of 0.5 W were achieved at 66 GHz when the diode grid was pumped with a pulsed source at 33 GHz. This grid had 760 Schottky-barrier varactor diodes. The average series resistance was 27 ohms, the minimum capacitance was 18 fF at a reverse breakdown voltage of -3 V. The measurements indicate that the diode grid is a feasible device for generating watt-level powers at millimeter frequencies and that substantial improvement is possible by improving the diode breakdown voltage.

Analysis of radiometer calibration effects with TOUCHSTONE

The microwave circuit analysis program TOUCHSTONE is used to study two effects of importance in radiometer calibration. The two effects are impedance mismatches at the antenna-air and cold load-air interfaces and dissipatives losses, which radiate thermal noise into the system. The results predicted by TOUCHSTONE are shown to be in very close agreement with earlier results obtained by purely analytical methods. The techniques used in establishing the circuit models and in processing the resulting data are described in detail.

High reliability megawatt transformer/rectifier

The goal of the two phase program is to develop the technology and design and fabricate ultralightweight high reliability DC to DC converters for space power applications. The converters will operate from a 5000 V dc source and deliver 1 MW of power at 100 kV dc. The power weight density goal is 0.1 kg/kW. The cycle to cycle voltage stability goals was + or - 1 percent RMS. The converter is to operate at an ambient temperature of -40 C with 16 minute power pulses and one hour off time. The uniqueness of the design in Phase 1 resided in the dc switching array which operates the converter at 20 kHz using Hollotron plasma switches along with a specially designed low loss, low leakage inductance and a light weight high voltage transformer. This approach reduced considerably the number of components in the converter thereby increasing the system reliability. To achieve an optimum transformer for this application, the design uses four 25 kV secondary windings to produce the 100 kV dc output, thus reducing the transformer leakage inductance, and the ac voltage stresses. A specially designed insulation system improves the high voltage dielectric withstanding ability and reduces the insulation path thickness thereby reducing the component weight. Tradeoff studies and tests conducted on scaled-down model circuits and using representative coil insulation paths have verified the calculated transformer wave shape parameters and the insulation system safety. In Phase 1 of the program a converter design approach was developed and a preliminary transformer design was completed. A fault control circuit was designed and a thermal profile of the converter was also developed.

High-frequency resonant-tunneling oscillators

Advances in high-frequency resonant-tunneling-diode (RTD) oscillators are described. Oscillations up to a frequency of 420 GHz have been achieved in the GaAs/AlAs system. Recent results obtained with In0.53Ga0.47As/AlAs and InAs/AlSb RTDs show a greatly increased power density and indicate the potential for fundamental oscillations up to about 1 THz. These results are consistent with a lumped-element equivalent circuit model of the RTD. The model shows that the maximum oscillation frequency of the GaAs/AlAs RTDs is limited primarily by series resistance, and that the power density is limited by low peak-to-valley current ratio.

Theoretical and experimental investigation of a rectenna element for microwave power transmission

A microstrip measurement system has been designed to analyze packaged GaAs Schottky barrier diodes under small and large signal conditions. The nonlinear equivalent circuit parameters of the diode are determined using a small signal test method that analyzes the diode's scattering parameters at various bias levels. The experimental results of a 2.45 GHz diode are verified using a nonlinear circuit simulation program based on a multireflection algorithm. A 35 GHz rectenna has been built using a microstrip patch antenna and Ka-band mixer diode. The measured efficiency was 29 percent at 120 mW input power. A frequency selective surface is designed using an equivalent circuit model to reduce the second harmonic radiations for a 2.45 GHz rectenna. Theoretical results are found to be in fairly good agreement with experiments.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of lithium-titanium disulfide rechargeable cells

The two-terminal alternating current impedance of Li/TiS2 rechargeable cells was studied as a function of frequency, state-of-charge, and extended cycling. Analysis based on a plausible equivalent circuit model for the Li/TiS2 cell leads to evaluation of kinetic parameters for the various physicochemical processes occurring at the electrode/electrolyte interfaces. To investigate the causes of cell degradation during extended cycling, the parameters evaluated for cells cycled 5 times were compared with the parameters of cells cycled over 600 times. The findings are that the combined ohmic resistance of the electrolyte and electrodes suffers a tenfold increase after extended cycling, while the charge-transfer resistance and diffusional impedance at the TiS2/electrolyte interface are not significantIy affected. The results reflect the morphological change and increase in area of the anode due to cycling. The study also shows that overdischarge of a cathode-limited cell causes a decrease in the diffusion coefficient of the lithium ion in the cathode.

Electrical characteristics of spark generators for automotive ignition

This paper reports the results of an extensive program of measurements on 11 ignition systems differing widely in type. The results serve primarily to give representative data on the electric and magnetic constants of such systems, and on the secondary voltage produced by them under various conditions of speed, timing, shunting resistance, etc. They also serve to confirm certain of the theoretical formulas which have been proposed to connect the performance of such systems with their electrical constants, and to indicate the extent to which certain simplified model circuits duplicate the performance of the actual apparatus.

Computational Investigation of Experimental Interaction Impedance Obtained by Perturbation for Helical Traveling-Wave Tube Structures

Conventional methods used to measure the cold-test interaction impedance of helical slow-wave structures involve perturbing a helical circuit with a cylindrical dielectric rod placed on the central axis of the circuit. It has been shown that the difference in resonant frequency or axial phase shift between the perturbed and unperturbed circuits can be related to the interaction impedance. However, because of the complex configuration of the helical circuit, deriving this relationship involves-several approximations. With the advent of accurate three- dimensional helical circuit models, these standard approximations can be fully investigated. This paper addresses the most prominent approximations made in the analysis for measured interaction impedance by Lagerstrom and investigates their accuracy using the three-dimensional simulation code MAFIA. It is shown that a more accurate value of interaction impedance can be obtained by using three-dimensional computational methods rather than performing costly and time consuming experimental cold-test measurements.
