Development of the Volatile Monitoring Oxygen Measurement System

Extracting resources from the Lunar Regolith for oxygen production is a primary focus for the NASA in-situ resource utilization technology developments for the Artemis missions. The need to identify, separate, and purify extracted resources continuously evolves around state-of-the-art technology research and development and will also enable more sustainable space human exploration. A research team at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center comprised of the Applied Chemistry Laboratory and the Granular Mechanics and Regolith Operations Laboratory have developed a versatile system able to focus on the extraction and quantification of oxygen. The system, Volatile Monitoring Oxygen Measurement System (VMOMS), can identify extracted oxygen from regolith processing technologies such as molten regolith electrolysis. The technology can quantify oxygen levels from a few parts per million, ppm, up to a 95% oxygen environment and detect other volatiles.

Radar Waveform Pulse Analysis Measurement System for High-Power GaN Amplifiers

This work presents a measurement system to characterize the pulsed response of high-power GaN amplifiers for use in space-based SAR platforms that require very strict amplitude and phase stability. The measurement system is able to record and analyze data on three different time scales: fast, slow, and long, which allows for greater detail of the mechanisms that impact amplitude and phase stability. The system is fully automated through MATLAB, which offers both instrument control capability and in-situ data processing. To validate this system, a high-power GaN HEMT amplifier operated in saturation was characterized. The fast time results show that variations to the amplitude and phase are correlated to DC supply transients, while long time characteristics are correlated to temperature changes.

High Temperature Emissivity Measurement System (HiTEMS)

The High Temperature Emissivity Measurement System (HiTEMS) is a ground test capability at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center enabling near normal and varied incident angle spectral and total emittance measurements. This data is gathered at vacuum levels as low as approximately 10-7 Torr within a temperature range of 600°C to approximately 2,600°C, providing essential material property data to assist with improved thermal control estimates for spacecraft hardware. Recent work focusing on the measurement of smooth and bead blasted tungsten samples in support of the Propulsion Research and Tech Branch at NASA MSFC provides a thorough examination into HiTEMS capabilities and insight into the variabilities related to sample roughness at extreme temperatures.

Three-dimensional wire-mesh capacitor system measures fluid density

Gaging system automatically measures the bulk density of a stored, electrically nonconductive fluid containing varying portions of liquid and vapor. The system employs a three-dimensional wire-mesh capacitor whose capacitance varies with the bulk density of the fluid dielectric medium between the capacitor plates.

Electro-optical spin measurement system

An electro-optical spin measurement system for a spin model in a spin tunnel includes a radio controlled receiver/transmitter, targets located on the spin model, optical receivers mounted around the perimeter of the spin tunnel and the base of the spin tunnel for receiving data from the targets, and a control system for accumulating data from the radio controlled receiver and receivers. Six targets are employed. The spin model includes a fuselage, wings, nose, and tail. Two targets are located under the fuselage of the spin model at the nose tip and tail. Two targets are located on the side of the fuselage at the nose tip and tail, and a target is located under each wing tip. The targets under the fuselage at the nose tip and tail measure spin rate of the spin model, targets on the side of the fuselage at the nose tip and tail measure angle of attack of the spin model, and the targets under the wing tips measure roll angle of the spin model. Optical receivers are mounted at 90 degree increments around the periphery of the spin tunnel to determine angle of attack and roll angle measurements of the spin model. Optical receivers are also mounted at the base of the spin tunnel to define quadrant and position of the spin model and to determine the spin rate of the spin model.

Requirements and Development of an Acceleration Measurement System for International Space Station Microgravity Science Payloads

The International Space Station is being developed by NASA and international partners as a versatile user platform to allow long term on-orbit investigations of a variety of scientific and technology arenas. In particular, scientific studies are planned within a research class known as microgravity science in areas such as biotechnology, combustion, fluid physics, and materials sciences. An acceleration measurement system is in development to aid such research conducted in the on-orbit conditions of apparent weightlessness. This system provides a general purpose acceleration measurement capability in support of these payloads and investigators. Such capability allows for systematic study of scientific phenomena by obtaining information regarding the local accelerations present during experiment operations. Preparations for implementing this flight measurement system involves two distinct stages: requirements development prior to initiating the design activity, and the design activity itself. This paper defines the requirements definition approach taken, provides an overview of the results of the requirements phase, and outlines the initial design considerations being addressed for this measurement system. Some preliminary engineering approaches are also described.

Automatic quadrature control and measuring system

A quadrature component cancellation and measuring system comprising a detection system for detecting the quadrature component from a primary signal, including reference circuitry to define the phase of the quadrature component for detection is described. A Raysistor optical coupling control device connects an output from the detection system to a circuit driven by a signal based upon the primary signal. Combining circuitry connects the primary signal and the circuit controlled by the Raysistor device to subtract quadrature components. A known current through the optically sensitive element produces a signal defining the magnitude of the quadrature component.

Dynamic gas temperature measurement system, volume 1

A gas temperature measurement system with compensated frequency response of 1 kHz and capability to operate in the exhaust of a gas turbine engine combustor was developed. A review of available technologies which could attain this objective was done. The most promising method was identified as a two wire thermocouple, with a compensation method based on the responses of the two different diameter thermocouples to the fluctuating gas temperature field. In a detailed design of the probe, transient conduction effects were identified as significant. A compensation scheme was derived to include the effects of gas convection and wire conduction. The two wire thermocouple concept was tested in a laboratory burner exhaust to temperatures of about 3000 F and in a gas turbine engine to combustor exhaust temperatures of about 2400 F. Uncompensated and compensated waveforms and compensation spectra are presented.

A field-deployable digital acoustic measurement system

A field deployable digital acoustic measurement system was developed to support acoustic research programs at the Langley Research Center. The system digitizes the acoustic inputs at the microphone, which can be located up to 1000 feet from the van which houses the acquisition, storage, and analysis equipment. Digitized data from up to 12 microphones is recorded on high density 8mm tape and is analyzed post-test by a microcomputer system. Synchronous and nonsynchronous sampling is available with maximum sample rates of 12,500 and 40,000 samples per second respectively. The high density tape storage system is capable of storing 5 gigabytes of data at transfer rates up to 1 megabyte per second. System overall dynamic range exceeds 83 dB.
