High-Fidelity Computational Methodology for Stitched Composite Aerospace Structures

Due to the high demands for energy efficient commercial transportation, the aviation industry has taken a leading role in the integration of composite structures. Among the leading concepts to develop lighter, more fuel-efficient commercial transport is the Pultruded Rod Stitched Efficient Unitized Structure (PRSEUS) concept, an enabling technology for hybrid wing bodies. Many proof-of-concept tests have been performed to demonstrate that the use of PRSEUS has improved the residual strength of damaged structures compared to conventional composite structures, but efficient computational tools must be developed before the concept can be commercially certified and implemented. In an attempt to address the need for efficient computational tools, a comprehensive modeling approach is developed and applied to investigate applications of PRSEUS at multiple scales. Therefore, a computational methodology has been progressively developed based on physically realistic concepts. The focus of the work described herein is to define the modeling characteristics required to accurately simulate the damage progression and failure of PRSEUS at the coupon scale. The work herein is focused on the development and analysis of a PRSEUS stringer, the methodology for which may be extended to other PRSEUS coupons and components.

Defining Probe Closure Offset and Scan Stitching Methodology for Element Contact Profilometry in the Hot Fuel Examination Facility

The Element Contact Profilometer (ECP) is a non-destructive post-irradiation examination (PIE) method established in the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) Hot Fuel Examination Facility (HFEF). The ECP suspends a fuel rod with a standard end-fitting in a vertical orientation and draws it between two opposed Sony probes with sapphire rod tips, which measure the diameter directly as a function of vertical stage position through contact profilometry. The ECP is equipped with concave rollers, which pinch the rod to maintain a consist position between these sapphire probe tips. A schematic of the analysis head is shown in Figure 1. The gripper that suspends the rod end-fitting is able to rotate to allow measuring of any azimuthal angle around the rod. This system is used to characterize the diameter of full-length light water reactor (LWR) irradiated fuel rods at multiple azimuthal angles in support of the Advanced Fuels Campaign (AFC).

Satellite Enveloped with STITCHED Engineering Sensors for Detection of Approaching Objects

Today as well as tomorrows spaceborne assets impact almost all areas of national and nuclear security. Spaceborne assets can not only collect and disseminate valuable data, well beyond just the visual, but also track terrestrial-based mobile assets in real-time, and active spaceborne platforms potentially pose serious risk to vulnerable earth-based systems and infrastructures. The capability to defend national spaceborne assets from attack/interference is critical for security interests. This effort supports this mission through the cost-effective preeminent detection of approaching threats to our nation’s vital resources, in order to help secure and trust these high-value assets against the threats of tomorrow. This project develops novel fabrication techniques for conformal, low-profile and lightweight leakywave antenna (LWA) detection/imaging systems, which fuses technical embroidery (TE) and laser ablation (LA) processes with LWA design. Technical embroidery is an emerging field in additive textile manufacturing where flexible materials and functionalized fabrics are created for a wide variety of uses and purposes, while laser ablation is the process of removing material from a solid surface by irradiating it with a laser beam. Here, thin, conformal antenna designs are designed, modeled and fabricated using both TE and LA, to create lightweight, flexible and conformal object detection and imaging radars. This novel development ensures our nation’s ability to field advanced lightweight and conformal technologies to protect spaceborne assets.

Abbreviated Report for 25-FS-011: Switch and Stitch Similar Subgraph Synthesizer

Government institutions utilize software from a wide array of development sources, including those written by large software companies, government contractors, and open-source repositories. Avoiding installation of malicious software components is an important national security endeavor. Automated analysis of previously unseen software is an active research area, and there is much research in the design of systems that compare new software artifacts to a large set of previously seen software records organized by various behaviors they contain. One attractive approach is to turn each compiled software binary into a graph representation and apply a graph similarity model that scores pairs of binaries by their relative similarity. When a pair is deemed similar, it is useful to know why, in the sense of providing explanations to security analysts regarding which portions of the software they should look into further.

Trident Smyth: Near Real Time Sensor Fusion and Track Stitching Application

Sandia’s Sensor Data Fusion application is a NGA sponsored project that fuses tracks from different sensors to provide more accuracy than any single track. The application serves as the unclassified architecture for data ingestion, processing, and near real-time sensor fusion.
