Estimation of F-3 and F-4 knock-limited performance ratings for ternary and quaternary blends containing triptane or other high-antiknock aviation-fuel blending agents

Charts are presented that permit the estimation of F-3 and F-4 knock-limited performance ratings for certain ternary and quaternary fuel blends. Ratings for various ternary and quaternary blends estimated from these charts compare favorably with experimental F-3 and F-4 ratings. Because of the unusual behavior of some of the aromatic blends in the F-3 engine, the charts for aromatic-paraffinic blends are probably less accurate than the charts for purely paraffinic blends.

Synthesis and Characterization of the First Liquid Single Source Precursors for the Deposition of Ternary Chalcopyrite (CuInS2) Thin Film Materials

Molecular engineering of ternary single source precursors based on the [{PBu3}2Cu(SR')2In(SR')2] architecture have afforded the first liquid CIS ternary single source precursors (when R = Et, n-Pr), which are suitable for low temperature deposition (< 350 C). Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) and modulated-differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) confirm their liquid phase and reduced stability. X-ray diffraction studies, energy dispersive analyzer (EDS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) support the formation of the single-phase chalcopyrite CuInS2 at low temperatures.

A Review of Single Source Precursors for the Deposition of Ternary Chalcopyrite Materials

The development of thin-film solar cells on flexible, lightweight, space-qualified durable substrates (i.e. Kapton) provides an attractive solution to fabricating solar arrays with high specific power, (W/kg). The syntheses and thermal modulation of ternary single source precursors, based on the [{LR}2Cu(SR')2In(SR')2] architecture in good yields are described. Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) and Low temperature Differential Scanning Caloriometry, (DSC) demonstrate that controlled manipulation of the steric and electronic properties of either the group five-donor and/or chalcogenide moiety permits directed adjustment of the thermal stability and physical properties of the precursors. TGA-Evolved Gas Analysis, confirms that single precursors decompose by the initial extrusion of the sulphide moiety, followed by the loss of the neutral donor group, (L) to release the ternary chalcopyrite matrix. X-ray diffraction studies, EDS and SEM on the non-volatile pyrolized material demonstrate that these derivatives afford single-phase CuInS2/CuInSe2 materials at low temperature. Thin-film fabrication studies demonstrate that these single source precursors can be used in a spray chemical vapor deposition process, for depositing CuInS2 onto flexible polymer substrates at temperatures less than 400 C.

Characterization of Ternary NiTiPt High-Temperature Shape Memory Alloys

Pt additions substituted for Ni in NiTi alloys are known to increase the transformation temperature of the alloy but only at fairly high Pt levels. However, until now only ternary compositions with a very specific stoichiometry, Ni50-xPtxTi50, have been investigated and then only to very limited extent. In order to learn about this potential high-temperature shape memory alloy system, a series of over twenty alloys along and on either side of a line of constant stoichiometry between NiTi and TiPt were arc melted, homogenized, and characterized in terms of their microstructure, transformation temperatures, and hardness. The resulting microstructures were examined by scanning electron microscopy and the phase compositions quantified by energy dispersive spectroscopy."Stoichiometric" compositions along a line of constant stoichiometry between NiTi to TiPt were essentially single phase but by any deviations from a stoichiometry of (Ni,Pt)50Ti50 resulted in the presence of at least two different intermetallic phases, depending on the overall composition of the alloy. Essentially all alloys, whether single or two-phase, still under went a martensitic transformation. It was found that the transformation temperatures were depressed with initial Pt additions but at levels greater than 10 at.% the transformation temperature increased linearly with Pt content. Also, the transformation temperatures were relatively insensitive to alloy stoichiometry within the range of alloys examined. Finally, the dependence of hardness on Pt content for a series of Ni50-xPtxTi50 alloys showed solution softening at low Pt levels, while hardening was observed in ternary alloys containing more than about 10 at.% Pt. On either side of these "stoichiometric" compositions, hardness was also found to increase significantly.

Ternary boride product and process

A hard, tough, strong ceramic body is formed by hot pressing a mixture of a powdered metal and a powdered metal diboride. The metal employed is zirconium, titanium or hafnium and the diboride is the diboride of a different member of the same group of zirconium, titanium or hafnium to form a ternary composition. During hot pressing at temperatures above about 2,000.degree.F., a substantial proportion of acicular ternary monoboride is formed.

Co(x)Ni(4-x)Sb(12-y)Sn(y) Ternary Skutterudites: Processing and Thermoelectric Properties

Skutterudites have proven to be a useful thermoelectric system as a result of their high figure of merit, favorable mechanical properties, and good thermal stability. Binary skutterudites have received the majority of interest in recent years, as a result of successful double and triple filling schemes. Ternary skutterudites, such as Ni4Sb7Sn5, also demonstrate good thermoelectric performance, with high power factor and low thermal conductivity. Ternary skutterudites, as contrasted to binary systems, provide more possibility for tuning electronic structure as substitutions can be studied on three elements. The Co(x)Ni(4-x)Sb(12-y)Sn(y) system has been investigated as both a p- and n-type thermoelectric material, stable up to 200 C. The system is processed through a combination of solidification, mechanical alloying, and hot pressing steps. Rietveld structure refinement has revealed an interesting occupancy of Sn on both the 24g Wyckoff position with Sb as well as the 2a position as a rattler. In addition to thermoelectric properties, detailed processing routes have been investigated on the system.

Ab Initio Simulations of Martensitic Phase Transformations in NiTi-based High Temperature Ternary Shape Memory Alloys: NiTiHf and NiTiZr

Ab initio simulations of phase stability and martensitic phase transitions are performed for NiTi-based ternary shape memory alloys (SMAs). Specifically, we considered NiTiHf and NiTiZr, which are highly studied for high temperature SMA applications. Previously, we performed investigations of ordered NiTi and related binaries [1,2]. However, similar approaches for chemically disordered compounds present additional difficulties. In this work, special quasi-random structures (SQS) were generated for various compositions, x∈[0,0.5], of Ni0.5Ti(0.5-x)Hfx and Ni0.5Ti(0.5-x)Zrx to capture chemical disorder of off-stoichiometric compounds. Phase stability was evaluated through analysis of finite temperature phonon spectra using temperature dependent effective potential (TDEP) method. Free energies for the cubic B2 phase of NiTiHf and NiTiZr were computed using ab initio thermodynamic integration (AITI) developed previously [1,2]. Free energies for monoclinic B19’ and orthorhombic B33 phases were evaluated via quasi harmonic approximations (QHA). Our results show a critical composition (xc) where the three phases of B2, B19’ and B33 meet, i.e. there is a tri-critical point. For x xc, the transition is between B33 and B2, i.e. it is not a shape memory transition. The approach presented here opens the door to ab initio based predictions of MTT for arbitrary ternary SMAs.

A Holistic Stabilization of the Anode in Lithium‐Sulfur Batteries Through a Ternary Alloy Fusion

The anode in lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) is plagued by not only inhomogeneous lithium (Li) deposition, but also by parasitic side-reactions. Often, a thick anode (∼400 µm) is used to compensate for these drawbacks, lowering gravimetric and volumetric energy densities. In this work, we demonstrate a ternary alloy anode fabricated via scalable thermal fusion of Li with aluminum (Al) and tellurium (Te) to cohesively address these issues. The Al–Li skeleton serves to homogenize Li deposition as well as reinforce the anode, allowing it to be rolled down to low thicknesses. Te incorporation suppresses the reaction of Li with polysulfides (Li 2 Sn) to form lithium sulfide (Li 2 S) and electrolyte degradation. It can also facilitate the formation of polytellurosulfides (Li 2 Te x Sy), which are far more conducive to Li + -ion diffusion. Even under a lean electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratio of 8 µL mg −1 and a low negative/positive (N/P) ratio of 3, capacities over 900 mA h g −1 at a C/5 rate are obtained in cells with Li–Te–Al anodes with a capacity retention of 80% after 70 cycles. In comparison, the baseline lithium-metal anode retains only 35% after 50 cycles. Furthermore, the Li–Te–Al anodes confer a 24% boost to gravimetric energy density at the pouch cell level.

Dynamic process intensification: Fundamentals and implementation to ternary distillation

Distillation remains a key technology for separating liquid mixtures. Its versatility comes with the disadvantage of high energy consumption. We previously used empirical arguments to introduce dynamic process intensification (DPI) as a strategy for improving the energy efficiency of binary distillation. In this article, we focus on ternary distillation; we begin by providing a rigorous basis for DPI, then formulate the problem of identifying the operating states for DPI as a nonlinear optimization problem. Via an extensive case study considering a hydrocarbon mixture, we demonstrate that reboiler energy use can be reduced by more than 2.3% relative to an equivalent column operating at steady state. Here, we prove that this result is due to the fact that DPI aims to satisfy product flow and quality constraints on average in time, affording broader opportunities for optimizing column economics than steady-state operation, where constraints are met strictly at all times.

Investigation of the effects of ternary deep eutectic solvent composition on pretreatment of sorghum stover

Biomass‐derived deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been introduced as promising pretreatment and fractionation solvents because of their mild processing conditions, easy synthesis, and green solvent components from biomass. In recent DES studies, solvent‐based third constituents like water, ethanol, and others improve the processibility of typical binary DESs. However, the impacts of these components are not well understood. Here, two solvent‐based constituents, including water and ethylene glycol, were applied to 3,4‐dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHBA)‐based DES system for improving the conversion efficiency of cellulose‐rich fraction and the properties of lignin fraction. Chemical composition, enzymatic digestibility, degree of polymerization of cellulose and physicochemical properties of lignin were used to evaluate the impact of each third constituent on biomass processing. Ternary ChCl‐DHBA DESs exhibited better performances in delignification, fermentable sugar production, and preservation of β‐O‐4 ether linkage in lignin compared with binary ChCl‐DHBA DES.

Improving the performance of PM6 donor polymer by random ternary copolymerization of BDD and DTBT segments

Developing high-performance wide bandgap polymer donors to match the rapidly growing non-fullerene small molecule acceptors (NF-SMAs) is of great importance to further improve the photovoltaic performances of organic solar cells (OSCs). PM6 and D18 are two leading wide bandgap donor polymers, but their performances are highly sensitive to the molecular weights, which have distinct impact on the morphology and thereby the charge generation and recombination processes. Here, in this work, we reported the random ternary copolymerization of PM6 and D18 segments to develop random terpolymers with finely tuned photoelectronic properties and optimized blend morphology for high-performance OSCs. The resulting random terpolymers (PMD-5, PMD-10, PMD-15 and PMD-20) exhibited finely tuned absorptions, energy levels and blend morphology. The optimal morphology of PMD-15:L8-BO contributed to the fast exciton diffusion and dissociation, efficient charge extraction with suppressed recombination. Thus, the power conversion efficiency was improved from 17.22% of the control PM6 devices and 17.47% of the control D18 devices to 18.12% of PMD-15 based devices, which is the top performance of random terpolymers. Moreover, the PMD-15 exhibited much higher batch-to-batch reproducibility at a broad molecular weight range than that of PM6 and D18, showing promising for practical applications.

Reactive flash sintering of TiZrN and TiAlN ternary metal nitrides

Here, this study demonstrated the reactive flash sintering (RFS) for two powder mixtures: TiN-ZrN (both conducting) and AlN-TiN (TiN conducting but AlN insulating), targeting ternary metal nitrides (TMN) of Ti 0.5 Zr 0.5 N and Ti 0.5 Al 0.5 N, respectively. A constant volage and pressure (e.g., 8 V DC, ∼15 MPa) at room temperature triggered the flash (current density up to 27 A/mm 2 ) without pre-heating, and the entire RFS process finished in a few minutes. For TiZrN, the flash was instantaneous whereas for TiAlN, there was a long incubation before the flash followed by a quick and dramatic flash. Both conventional ex situ XRD and in situ synchrotron study had been carried out. They showed a uniform Ti 0.57 Zr 0.43 N solution formed in RFS and persisted upon cooling, while (Ti, Al) N solid solution formed at high temperature was not stable and likely went through a very quick phase separation in the cooling process. The final products from RFS had been characterized using SEM/EDS for microstructure. Both TiZrN and TiAlN were dense. Distribution of Ti, Zr, and N was uniform for TiZrN; for TiAlN, Ti and N distribution was uniform, while association of Al with oxygen was observed. TGA-DSC revealed the onset oxidation temperature for TiZrN was comparable to TiN and ZrN, while it was higher by ∼200 °C for TiAlN, likely due to the formation of Al 2 O 3 . In terms of mechanical properties such as hardness or fracture toughness, forming a single-phase solid solution (like TiZrN) does not offer obvious benefits. while large grain size from RFS seemed to be unfavorable. Future optimization of RFS condition and in-depth study by both experiments and simulation are needed to fully understand the composition-processing-structure-property relationships for such TMN from the reactive flash sintering process.

Computational modeling of coupled mechanical damage and electrochemistry in ternary oxide composite electrodes

Performance degradation of ternary layered oxide cathodes largely originates from their loss of structural integrity in cyclic usage. Mechanical damage, such as intergranular fracture of the active particles, is not only a mechanical cleavage process but also interferes with electrochemical kinetics such as infiltration of liquid electrolyte, surface corrosion of the constituent primary particles, and may eventually isolate the primary grains from the electron conducting network. Here, in this work, we develop a computational framework that integrates electrochemistry of a LiNi x Mn y Co 1−x−y O 2 (NMC) composite cathode with mechanical damage of the active particles. To fully examine the intricate chemomechanical behavior of the electrode, we evaluate the effects of the anisotropic material properties, the influence of mechanical potential on Li transport, and the concurrent intergranular fracture and electrolyte penetration along the grain boundaries upon multiple cycles. Electrolyte infiltration benefits capacity retention but aggravates further mechanical damage by corrosion. Structural failure mostly occurs in the first charging due to the anisotropic mechanical strain between the primary grains, while the resulting damage remains stable in the later few cycles. The results are consistent with experimental observations and the integration of electrochemistry and mechanical failure enables a step further understanding of the complex mechanism of battery degradation.

Boosting Thermoelectric Performance in Nanocrystalline Ternary Skutterudite Thin Films through Metallic CoTe 2 Integration

Metal–semiconductor nanocomposites have emerged as a viable strategy for concurrently tailoring both thermal and electronic transport properties of established thermoelectric materials, ultimately achieving synergistic performance. In this investigation, a series of nanocomposite thin films were synthesized, embedding metallic cobalt telluride (CoTe 2 ) nanophase within the nanocrystalline ternary skutterudite (Co(Ge 1.22 Sb 0.22 )Te 1.58 or CGST) matrix. Our approach harnessed composition fluctuation-induced phase separation and in situ growth during thermal annealing to seamlessly integrate the metallic phase. The distinctive band structures of both materials have developed an ohmic-type contact characteristic at the interface, which raised carrier density considerably yet negligibly affected the mobility counterpart, leading to a substantial improvement in electrical conductivity. The intricate balance in transport properties is further influenced by the metallic CoTe 2 phase’s role in diminishing lattice thermal conductivity. The presence of the metallic phase instigates enhanced phonon scattering at the interface boundaries. Consequently, a 2-fold enhancement in the thermoelectric figure of merit (zT ~ 1.30) is attained with CGST-7 wt. % CoTe 2 nanocomposite film at 655 K compared to that of pristine CGST.

Ternary PtIrNi Catalysts for Efficient Electrochemical Ammonia Oxidation

Due to high energy density, carbon-free feature, and easiness to be liquefied, ammonia (NH 3 ) has proved to be an effective alternative to hydrogen in low temperature fuel cells via its direct the ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) for electricity generation. However, the kinetically sluggish AOR has prohibitively hindered the attractive direct ammonia fuel cell (DAFC) applications. Here we report an efficient AOR catalyst, in which ternary PtIrNi alloy nanoparticles well dispersed on a binary composite support consisting of porous silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) and carboxyl-functionalized carbon nanotube (PtIrNi/SiO 2 -CNT-COOH) through a sonochemical-assisted synthesis strategy. The PtIrNi alloy nanoparticles, with the aid of abundant OHad provided by porous SiO 2 , and the improved electrical conductivity by CNTs, exhibit remarkable catalytic activity for the AOR in alkaline media. It is evidenced by a lower onset potential (~0.40 V vs. RHE) at room temperature, than that of commercial PtIr/C (ca. 0.43 V vs. RHE). Increasing NH 3 concentrations and operation temperatures significantly improve AOR performance of this catalyst. Specifically, AOR activity of the optimal PtIrNi nanoparticle catalyst can be significantly enhanced by elevating the temperature to 80ºC, with a much lower onset potential (~0.32 V vs. RHE), indicating that DAFC can be operated at higher temperature for increased performance. Constant-potential density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the Pt-Ir ensembles on {100}-terminated surfaces serve as the active site. Importantly, the introduction of Ni raises the center energy of the density of states projected onto the group d-orbitals of surface sites and thus lowers the theoretical onset potential for *NH 2 dehydrogenation to *NH when compared to Pt and Pt 3 Ir alloy.
