Recirculating and Sub-Atmospheric Rapid Cycle Amine Swing Bed Testing at Various Metabolic Profiles, Temperatures, and Half-Cycle Times

Sixty years since the first spacewalk, NASA’s Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) exploration space suit has undergone numerous design improvements and iterations. As commercial manufacturers develop next-generation systems to support increasingly complex missions, including Moon-to-Mars architecture prototyping and the design of the Martian Portable Life Support System (PLSS), material selection and individual subunit testing under realistic metabolic and pressure conditions are paramount. To determine whether a reusable carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) scrubber design and adsorbent can be utilized in new suit configurations, an all-encompassing test rig is required to compare existing and newly developed technologies. The test rig must be capable of sub-atmospheric testing, calibrated humid CO 2 dosing, and facilitation of the evaluation of sorbents across a wide range of operational requirements. Recently, XploSafe has developed an Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) testing rig specifically designed to explore CO 2 and humidity control materials for spacesuits. This closed-loop recirculating swing bed (Rapid Cycle Amine Test Rig) was utilized to compare adsorbent utility across a wide range of xEMU operating conditions. Following successful testing with Xplo-SA9T over multiple simulated eight-hour Extravehicular Activity (EVA) tests, improvements to the test stand were considered. Regeneration vacuum supply within the test rig was updated to more closely resemble space vacuum, theoretically increasing half-cycle timing. An improved water vapor delivery system was incorporated to dose a wider calibrated range of humidity over both short and long-duration EVAs. A range of metabolic profiles between 800 and 3000 BTU/h were tested, and the corresponding average CO 2 steady-states were compared. The effect of dosing temperature at the adsorbent bed inlet between 10 and 40 ̊C and the corresponding CO 2 removal efficiency was also evaluated.

Satellite battery testing status

Because of the large numbers of satellite cells currently being tested and anticipated at the Naval Weapons Support Center (NAVWPNSUPPCEN) Crane, Indiana, satellite cell testing is being integrated into the Battery Test Automation Project (BTAP). The BTAP, designed to meet the growing needs for battery testing at the NAVWPNSUPPCEN Crane, will consist of several Automated Test Stations (ATSs) which monitor batteries under test. Each ATS will interface with an Automation Network Controller (ANC) which will collect test data for reduction.

Characterization of Quicksounder ATMS at Instrument Level TVAC

QuickSounder (QS) is the pathfinder space mission for the next generation of NOAA LEO environmental satellites in the NEON program, follow-on to the JPSS program. It is a collaborative initiative between NASA and NOAA to verify rapid and cost-effective delivery of small Earth observation satellites. QuickSounder is focusing on mission elements other than science performance. In this context, an existing sensor, the refurbished ATMS EDU (Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder, Engineering Development Unit) was chosen as the QuickSounder payload. This poster discusses the performances of QuickSounder ATMS during thermal vacuum (TVAC) calibration to ensure that QS ATMS is characterized and calibrated in the same manner as JPSS ATMS units, even though science performance attributes are not the priority of this mission.

Developmental and Cryogenic Thermal Vacuum (TVAC) Testing Lessons Learned

Developmental thermal vacuum (TVAC) testing is a critical step in maturing hardware designs and validating performance prior to flight qualification. Unlike qualification or acceptance testing, developmental testing provides flexibility to explore design margins, uncover integration challenges, and refine test approaches before formal verification activities begin. This presentation highlights the value of developmental testing while sharing common pitfalls encountered during developmental TVAC campaigns. Lessons learned from hands-on testing experience, including extensive developmental testing at cryogenic temperatures, will be shared in this presentation. Topics include test planning and preparation, instrumentation strategies, contamination control considerations, troubleshooting unexpected anomalies, and approaches for staying on schedule while meeting test objectives. The audience will gain practical insights and best practices that can improve test efficiency, reduce risk, and enhance the overall success of future developmental TVAC efforts.

Enhancing Battery Safety with Fractional Thermal Runaway Calorimetry

Effective thermal management systems, designed to handle the impacts of thermal runaway (TR) and to prevent cell-to-cell propagation, are key to safe operation of lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery assemblies. Critical factors for optimising these systems include the total energy released during a single cell TR event and the fraction of the total energy that is released through the cell casing versus through the ejecta material. A unique fractional thermal runaway calorimeter (FTRC), designed to characterise said critical factors, was utilised to examine the TR behaviour of Li-ion cells). Delegates will be provided with an in-depth discussion on what fractional thermal runaway calorimetry is and how it benefits the development of safe and optimised battery assemblies that protect against thermal runaway. Delegates will see calorimetry data associated with a variety of Li-ion cells. Data presented is relevant to any industry that utilises high-energy Li-ion cells in closed environments and has a need to focus on safety.

Performance of AEA 80 Ah Battery Under GEO Profile

To date completed three Solar Dynamic Observatory SDO real-time eclipse seasons. Sony 18650HC has a low rate of capacity fade under GEO cycling regime. Real time test results correlate with accelerated GEO lifetest data and AEA capacity fade prediction tool. This data, together with other AEA test data, justify the SDO Project decision to baseline Lithium-Ion chemistry for the spacecraft battery.

On-Demand Production of Hypergols: Steps Towards Scalability

During FY 2025, the team at KSC focused on taking the 2024 proof-of-concept demonstration of hypergol production using novel methods and began scaling up production and increasing purity. The team was able to more than triple the production of hydrazine using a novel method with a drastic increase in the purity. The current method, albeit still limited to production rates on the order of mg/hr, provides a cost savings of approximately 14x when compared to market value pricing through the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) website. The benefit of this technology is the ability to produce some hypergolic fuels using constituents in Earth’s atmosphere, eliminating most chemical commodity logistics. This technology also allows for the return of domestic production of hypergolic propellant.

A Space Servicing Telerobotics Technology Demonstration

Supervised telerobotic controls provide the key to successful remote servicing, as demonstrated in the telerobot testbed of the jet propulsion laboratory. Such advanced techniques and systems are specially applicable to ground-remote operations for servicing tasks, which are to be performed remotely in space and to be operated under human supervision from the ground. Laboratory demonstrations have successfully proven the utility of such techniques and systems. Instrumental to the success of supervised robotic operations are the techniques called object designate and relative target. In addition, a technique called universal camera calibration was also applied in the telerobot testbed. Generalized compliant control techniques were used in the robotic removal and insertion operations. These techniques were proven successful in task situations where preprogrammed automation cannot be adequately exercised due to errors, changes, or omission in the worksite data base.
