Future Air Force aircraft propulsion control systems: The extended summary paper

Hydromechanical control technology simply cannot compete against the performance benefits offered by electronics. Future military aircraft propulsion control systems will be full authority, digital electronic, microprocessor base systems. Anticipating the day when microprocessor technology will permit the integration and management of aircraft flight control, fire control and propulsion control systems, the Air Force Aero Propulsion Laboratory is developing control logic algorithms for a real time, adaptive control and diagnostic information system.

The Use of Software Agents for Autonomous Control of a DC Space Power System

In order to enable manned deep-space missions, the spacecraft must be controlled autonomously using on-board algorithms. A control architecture is proposed to enable this autonomous operation for an spacecraft electric power system and then implemented using a highly distributed network of software agents. These agents collaborate and compete with each other in order to implement each of the control functions. A subset of this control architecture is tested against a steadystate power system simulation and found to be able to solve a constrained optimization problem with competing objectives using only local information.

Spline Trajectory Algorithm Development: Bezier Curve Control Point Generation for UAVs

A greater need for sophisticated autonomous piloting systems has risen in direct correlation with the ubiquity of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology. Whether surveying unknown or unexplored areas of the world, collecting scientific data from regions in which humans are typically incapable of entering, locating lost or wanted persons, or delivering emergency supplies, an unmanned vehicle moving in close proximity to people and other vehicles, should fly smoothly and predictably. The mathematical application of spline interpolation can play an important role in autopilots' on-board trajectory planning. Spline interpolation allows for the connection of Three-Dimensional Euclidean Space coordinates through a continuous set of smooth curves. This paper explores the motivation, application, and methodology used to compute the spline control points, which shape the curves in such a way that the autopilot trajectory is able to meet vehicle-dynamics limitations. The spline algorithms developed used to generate these curves supply autopilots with the information necessary to compute vehicle paths through a set of coordinate waypoints.

Real-Time Failure Control (RTFC) algorithm part of automated monitoring-and-shutdown system being developed to ensure safety and prevent major damage to equipment during ground tests of main engine of space shuttle. Includes redundant sensors, controller voting logic circuits, automatic safe-limit logic circuits, and conditional-decision logic circuits, all monitored by human technicians. Basic principles of system also applicable to stationary powerplants and other complex machinery systems.

Mesh quality control for multiply-refined tetrahedral grids

A new algorithm for controlling the quality of multiply-refined tetrahedral meshes is presented in this paper. The basic dynamic mesh adaption procedure allows localized grid refinement and coarsening to efficiently capture aerodynamic flow features in computational fluid dynamics problems; however, repeated application of the procedure may significantly deteriorate the quality of the mesh. Results presented show the effectiveness of this mesh quality algorithm and its potential in the area of helicopter aerodynamics and acoustics.

Extending Classification Algorithms to Case-Control Studies

Classification is a common technique applied to ’omics data to build predictive models and identify potential markers of biomedical outcomes. Despite the prevalence of case-control studies, the number of classification methods available to analyze data generated by such studies is extremely limited. Conditional logistic regression is the most commonly used technique, but the associated modeling assumptions limit its ability to identify a large class of sufficiently complicated ’omic signatures. We propose a data preprocessing step which generalizes and makes any linear or nonlinear classification algorithm, even those typically not appropriate for matched design data, available to be used to model case-control data and identify relevant biomarkers in these study designs. We demonstrate on simulated case-control data that both the classification and variable selection accuracy of each method is improved after applying this processing step and that the proposed methods are comparable to or outperform existing variable selection methods. Finally, we demonstrate the impact of conditional classification algorithms on a large cohort study of children with islet autoimmunity.

Designing reinforcement learning algorithms for building HVAC control: From experimental observation to simulation comparisons

Advanced supervisory-level control with reinforcement learning (RL) is regarded as a promising solution for HVAC systems to minimize energy consumption while maintaining thermal comfort and indoor air quality. However, most RL applications were conducted in the simulation environment rather than real-world HVAC systems. This paper developed a value-based RL controller termed Deep Q-Network (DQN) for a typical central HVAC system and evaluated its performance in a building test facility. By comparing DQN with a rule-based controller, the study not only demonstrated the cases where DQN could properly maintain indoor comfort but also discussed possible reasons why DQN failed in some other situations. Recognizing the limitations of value-based RL algorithms from the experimental tests, a simulation study was conducted to compare DQN with an alternative RL approach, an actor–critic algorithm termed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG). In scenarios with a relatively large action space, DDPG outperformed DQN by requiring fewer computational resources and achieving better thermal comfort, lower energy consumption, and more stable control actions. The findings suggest that the ability of DDPG to handle continuous control variables more effectively allows for faster convergence in training and more precise control in practice, which enhances the overall efficiency and reliability of the HVAC system.

Improving the MLS through enhanced cockpit displays

A simulator investigation of various prediction and quickening algorithms in computer-generated forward-looking displays is presented; the algorithms are used to improve manual aircraft control on curved microwave landing system approaches. The experimental facility consisted of a Link GAT-2 simulator, a PDP 11/40 minicomputer, a high-speed graphic display, a TV camera, and a CRT monitor. Results indicate that second- and third-order predictor displays provide the best lateral performance and that intermediate levels of prediction and quickening provide the best vertical control. Prediction/quickening algorithms of increasing computational order were found to significantly reduce aileron, rudder, and elevator control responses. The conventional crosspointer displays yielded an average 2-sigma lateral error of + or - 200 over all wind conditions at 500 m from touchdown, and was therefore unable to meet FAA requirements (+ or - 22.9 m); the pictorial-preview display yielded much better results: an average 2-sigma lateral error of + or - 27 m. Neither display was able to approach the FAA specified accuracy requirement in the vertical dimension (+ or - 3.7 m).

Identification and Reconfigurable Control of Impaired Multi-Rotor Drones

The paper presents an algorithm for control and safe landing of impaired multi-rotor drones when one or more motors fail simultaneously or in any sequence. It includes three main components: an identification block, a reconfigurable control block, and a decisions making block. The identification block monitors each motor load characteristics and the current drawn, based on which the failures are detected. The control block generates the required total thrust and three axis torques for the altitude, horizontal position and/or orientation control of the drone based on the time scale separation and nonlinear dynamic inversion. The horizontal displacement is controlled by modulating the roll and pitch angles. The decision making algorithm maps the total thrust and three torques into the individual motor thrusts based on the information provided by the identification block. The drone continues the mission execution as long as the number of functioning motors provide controllability of it. Otherwise, the controller is switched to the safe mode, which gives up the yaw control, commands a safe landing spot and descent rate while maintaining the horizontal attitude.

Algorithm development for the control design of flexible structures

The critical problems associated with the control of highly damped flexible structures are outlined. The practical problems include: high performance; assembly in space, configuration changes; on-line controller software design; and lack of test data. Underlying all of these problems is the central problem of modeling errors. To justify the expense of a space structure, the performance requirements will necessarily be very severe. On the other hand, the absence of economical tests precludes the availability of reliable data before flight. A design algorithm is offered which: (1) provides damping for a larger number of modes than the optimal attitude controller controls; (2) coordinates the rate of feedback design with the attitude control design by use of a similar cost function; and (3) provides model reduction and controller reduction decisions which are systematically connected to the mathematical statement of the control objectives and the disturbance models.

A Test Bed for Evaluating Frequency Estimation Algorithms in Synthetic Inertia Control: User Manual

As penetration of converter interfaced generators (CIGs) increases, the need for CIG frequency control participation increases. Traditionally, research in this area has been performed using positive sequence simulation software, which provides voltage magnitude and phase measurements, but not point-on-wave (POW) measurements. This means that the effect of frequency estimation algorithms cannot be accurately modeled, especially when the voltage waveform is distorted by faults or load connection events. This report serves as a user manual for an electromagnetic transient simulation testbed, which allows for accurate modeling of frequency estimation and control techniques.

Closed-Loop Error Learning Control for Uncertain Nonlinear Systems With Experimental Validation on a Mobile Robot

This article develops a closed-loop error learning control (CLELC) algorithm for feedback linearizable systems with experimental validation on a mobile robot. Traditional feedback and feedforward controllers are designed based on the nominal model by using the feedback linearization control (FLC) method. Then, an intelligent controller is designed based on the sliding mode learning algorithm that utilizes closed-loop error dynamics to learn the system behavior. The controllers are working in parallel, and the intelligent controller can gradually replace the feedback controller from the control of the system. In addition to the stability of the sliding mode learning algorithm, the closed-loop stability of an nth-order feedback linearizable system is proven. The simulation results demonstrate that the CLELC algorithm can improve control performance (e.g., smaller rise time, settling time, and overshoot) in the absence of uncertainties, and also provides robust control performance in the presence of uncertainties as compared to traditional FLC method. To test the efficiency and efficacy of the CLELC algorithm, the trajectory tracking problem of a tracked mobile robot is studied in real time. The experimental results demonstrate that the CLELC algorithm ensures highly accurate trajectory tracking performance than traditional FLC method.

Adaptive Control Allocation in the Presence of Actuator Failures

In this paper, a novel adaptive control allocation framework is proposed. In the adaptive control allocation structure, cooperative actuators are grouped and treated as an equivalent control effector. A state feedback adaptive control signal is designed for the equivalent effector and allocated to the member actuators adaptively. Two adaptive control allocation algorithms are proposed, which guarantee closed-loop stability and asymptotic state tracking in the presence of uncertain loss of effectiveness and constant-magnitude actuator failures. The proposed algorithms can be shown to reduce the controller complexity with proper grouping of the actuators. The proposed adaptive control allocation schemes are applied to two linearized aircraft models, and the simulation results demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithms.

A homotopy algorithm for synthesizing robust controllers for flexible structures via the maximum entropy design equations

One well known deficiency of LQG compensators is that they do not guarantee any measure of robustness. This deficiency is especially highlighted when considering control design for complex systems such as flexible structures. There has thus been a need to generalize LQG theory to incorporate robustness constraints. Here we describe the maximum entropy approach to robust control design for flexible structures, a generalization of LQG theory, pioneered by Hyland, which has proved useful in practice. The design equations consist of a set of coupled Riccati and Lyapunov equations. A homotopy algorithm that is used to solve these design equations is presented.

Perturbation guidance for aerocruise with bounded control

A perturbation guidance algorithm is developed for the constant-altitude portion of the orbital-plane change maneuver, called aerocruise. It is obtained by solving a linear-quadratic regulator problem in terms of the perturbed state and control variables. The regulator problem with hard control-variable constraints is then studied. For the two-control-variable case, the simulation results show that the bounded-control algorithm gives better performance than that obtained using a limiter for the case where control variables exceed the bounds.

Control of joint motion simulators for biomechanical research

The authors present a hierarchical adaptive algorithm for controlling upper extremity human joint motion simulators. A joint motion simulator is a computer-controlled, electromechanical system which permits the application of forces to the tendons of a human cadaver specimen in such a way that the cadaver joint under study achieves a desired motion in a physiologic manner. The proposed control scheme does not require knowledge of the cadaver specimen dynamic model, and solves on-line the indeterminate problem which arises because human joints typically possess more actuators than degrees of freedom. Computer simulation results are given for an elbow/forearm system and wrist/hand system under hierarchical control. The results demonstrate that any desired normal joint motion can be accurately tracked with the proposed algorithm. These simulation results indicate that the controller resolved the indeterminate problem redundancy in a physiologic manner, and show that the control scheme was robust to parameter uncertainty and to sensor noise.

Comparison of Five System Identification Algorithms for Rotorcraft Higher Harmonic Control

This report presents an analysis and performance comparison of five system identification algorithms. The methods are presented in the context of identifying a frequency-domain transfer matrix for the higher harmonic control (HHC) of helicopter vibration. The five system identification algorithms include three previously proposed methods: (1) the weighted-least- squares-error approach (in moving-block format), (2) the Kalman filter method, and (3) the least-mean-squares (LMS) filter method. In addition there are two new ones: (4) a generalized Kalman filter method and (5) a generalized LMS filter method. The generalized Kalman filter method and the generalized LMS filter method were derived as extensions of the classic methods to permit identification by using more than one measurement per identification cycle. Simulation results are presented for conditions ranging from the ideal case of a stationary transfer matrix and no measurement noise to the more complex cases involving both measurement noise and transfer-matrix variation. Both open-loop identification and closed- loop identification were simulated. Closed-loop mode identification was more challenging than open-loop identification because of the decreasing signal-to-noise ratio as the vibration became reduced. The closed-loop simulation considered both local-model identification, with measured vibration feedback and global-model identification with feedback of the identified uncontrolled vibration. The algorithms were evaluated in terms of their accuracy, stability, convergence properties, computation speeds, and relative ease of implementation.
