Ecohydrology of urban environments

Urban watersheds include a gradient of highly managed to unmanaged ecosystems that vary in vegetation cover, built and natural drainage systems, and impervious cover. A distinct difference to undeveloped ecosystems is the dominance of material and energy import and export, the disruption of natural catenae, the covariation of soils, terrain and canopy conditions. In this chapter, we discuss the distinct characteristics of urban ecohydrology compared to non-urban systems. We also investigate emergent principles of unmanaged watersheds that underscore the promotion of ecohydrological resilience, and the need to abstract and adapt these principles to support the goal-oriented restoration of impaired urban ecosystems.

Uncovering obscured phonon dynamics from powder inelastic neutron scattering using machine learning

The study of phonon dynamics is pivotal for understanding material properties, yet it faces challenges due to the irreversible information loss inherent in powder inelastic neutron scattering spectra and the limitations of traditional analysis methods. In this study, we present a machine learning framework designed to reveal obscured phonon dynamics from powder spectra. Using a variational autoencoder, we obtain a disentangled latent representation of spectra and successfully extract force constants for reconstructing phonon dispersions. Notably, our model demonstrates effective applicability to experimental data even when trained exclusively on physics-based simulations. The fine-tuning with experimental spectra further mitigates issues arising from domain shift. Analysis of latent space underscores the model’s versatility and generalizability, affirming its suitability for complex system applications. Furthermore, our framework’s two-stage design is promising for developing a universal pre-trained feature extractor. This approach has the potential to revolutionize neutron measurements of phonon dynamics, offering researchers a potent tool to decipher intricate spectra and gain valuable insights into the intrinsic physics of materials.

Triphenylborane in Metal-Free Catalysis

The development and application of new organoboron reagents as Lewis acids in synthesis and metal-free catalysis have dramatically expanded over the past 20 years. In this context, we will show the recent uses of the simple and relatively weak Lewis acid BPh 3 —discovered 100 years ago—as a metal-free catalyst for various organic transformations. The first part will highlight catalytic applications in polymer synthesis such as the copolymerization of epoxides with CO 2 , isocyanate, and organic anhydrides to various polycarbonate copolymers and controlled diblock copolymers as well as alternating polyurethanes. This is followed by a discussion of BPh 3 as a Lewis acid component in the frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) mediated cleavage of hydrogen and hydrogenation catalysis. In addition, BPh 3 -catalyzed reductive N-methylations and C-methylations with CO 2 and silane to value-added organic products will be covered as well along with BPh 3 -catalyzed cycloadditions and insertion reactions. Collectively, this mini-review showcases the underexplored potential of commercially available BPh3 in metal-free catalysis.

Electrochemical Deconstruction of Ortho-Phthalate Plasticizers and Recovery of Plasticizing Moieties

Electrochemical methods for the direct reduction of alkyl esters have been understudied but provide a potential advantage for addressing specific waste streams given that such strategies often require only a minimal chemical profile. One such waste stream that could benefit from electrochemical remediation is poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) plastics. PVC recycling often faces challenges due to the complexity of such waste. Solvent-based recycling methods pose several advantages for addressing post-use PVC; however, such methods are complicated by the high amounts of toxic legacy plasticizers (ortho-phthalates) present in PVC. A potential solution to addressing such phthalates is to address them electrochemically, coupled with recovery of the resulting valuable products. Presented herein is an optimized electrochemical method for ester activation that is leveraged to separate and recover the aromatic and alkyl components of ortho-phthalate plasticizers. The resulting aliphatic alcohols may be reused to prepare other non-toxic plasticizers. This electro-degradation method is demonstrated on six phthalates that have been identified to pose health concerns in addition to plasticizers recovered from commercial samples of PVC.

Improvements in the utilization of calcium carbonate in promoting sustainability and environmental health

Calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) is an incredibly abundant mineral on Earth, with over 90% of it being found in the lithosphere. To address the CO 2 crisis and combat ocean acidification, it is essential to produce more CaCO 3 using various synthetic methods. Additionally, this approach can serve as a substitute for energy-intensive processes like cement production. By doing so, we have the potential to not only reverse the damage caused by climate change but also protect biological ecosystems and the overall environment. The key lies in maximizing the utilization of CaCO 3 in various human activities, paving the way for a more sustainable future for our planet.

Selective depolymerization of polyolefin copolymer via high-entropy alloy catalyzed pyrolysis in a double-layered ultrafast heating reactor

Chemical recycling of polyolefin copolymers (PCPs) is essential for mitigating plastic pollution, yet achieving selective depolymerization into C 2 –C 3 monomers at high productivity remains challenging. Here, we introduce a double-layered ultrafast heating reactor (DUHR) that integrates Joule heating with a high-entropy alloy (HEA) catalyst composed of near-equimolar Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Ni. We achieve highly selective depolymerization of PCP into ethylene and propylene, yielding a 70% non-condensable fraction. Significant aromatic fractions form via radical-driven pathways—a behavior distinct from conventional externally heated pyrolyzers—highlighting DUHR's ability to generate reactive species and modulate reaction pathways. Furthermore, these findings demonstrate an effective strategy for chemical recycling of real-world plastic waste for polyolefin circularity and sustainable resource recovery.

Electron-Deficient Phenazines: Synthesis, Structures, Redox, and Optoelectronic Properties in the Gas Phase, in Solution, and in the Solid State

High-temperature gas-phase reactions of 1,4-C4F8I2 with phenazine (PHNZ) afforded new thermally- and air-stable derivatives with cyclo-C4F8 substituents, viz. 1,2-PHNZ(C4F8), 2,3-PHNZ(C4F8), 1,2:6,7-PHNZ(C4F8)2, 1,2:7,8-PHNZ(C4F8)2, and 1,2:8,9-PHNZ(C4F8)2. Reactions in the presence of Cu powder resulted in reductive-defluorination/aromatization of some of the cyclo-C4F8 substituents to produce 2,3-PHNZ(C4F4), 2,3-PHNZ(C4HF3), and 1,2:6,7-PHNZ(C4F8)(C4F4), which are formally tri- or tetrafluoro derivatives of benzo[a]phenazine. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction structures of these compounds demonstrate the planarity of 2,3-PHNZ(C4F4) and 2,3-PHNZ(C4HF3) and ordered p-stacking in 1,2-PHNZ(C4HF3), 1,2-PHNZ(C4F4), 1,2-PHNZ(C4F8), and 2,3-PHNZ(C4F8). Low-temperature gas-phase photoelectron spectra of the PHNZ(C4F8)1,2 compounds show that they are strong electron acceptors, with the three PHNZ(C4F8)2 isomers having electron affinities exceeding that of C60. Cyclic voltammetry in acetonitrile show that the five PHNZ(C4F8)1,2 compounds exhibit reversible one-electron reductions with large positive shifts in their reduction potentials relative to unsubstituted PHNZ. Spectroelectrochemical absorption and EPR spectra of PHNZ(C4F8)1,2- • anion radicals and extensive DFT calculations revealed the significant role that the different substitution patterns have on determining the optoelectronic properties of the PHNZ(C4F8)1,2 derivatives and PHNZ(C4F8)1,2- • anion radicals. Time-resolved microwave conductivity measurements and photoluminescence spectra of blends of the PHNZ(C4F8)1,2 derivatives with the donor poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) were recorded to assess the possible use of the new compounds in optoelectronic devices.

Multilevel Conditional Disturbance Rejection Control for Satellite Attitude Tracking

Recently, the conditional disturbance rejection controller (CDRC) was proposed to improve control performance by leveraging disturbances that have beneficial effects on the system. However, it only considers disturbances acting on the state variable directly influenced by them. Although fast convergence of this state can be achieved with the CDRC, it may unintentionally affect the convergence of the output (i.e., the primary state). Here, in this article, a multilevel CDRC is proposed to enhance satellite attitude control performance by accounting for the effect of disturbances on both attitude (output) and angular velocity. The extended state observer is employed to estimate the lumped disturbance, including the modeling errors and external disturbances. Then, a backstepping-based controller with the multilevel disturbance rejection law (ML-DRL) is designed for attitude tracking. The ML-DRL is developed to improve the control performance by using a disturbance with a damping effect on both attitude and velocity. Faster convergence of attitude and velocity can be achieved by conditionally compensating for the disturbance. The stability of the proposed control method is analyzed by demonstrating that the errors are bounded as time tends to infinity. The attitude control performance of the proposed method is evaluated through numerical examples conducted using the MATLAB/Simulink Multibody tool.

Role of Amorphous Chains in Nanoplastic Formation from Semicrystalline Polymers

Semicrystalline polymers, e.g., polyethylene terephthalate (PET), release micro- (100 nm to 1 mm) and nanoplastics (up to 100 nm) [MNPL] when they are degraded under quiescent conditions. However, the exact molecular mechanisms leading to material fragmentation into MNPL are unknown. Here, we monitor the evolution of chain molecular weight and the MNPL production kinetics during hydrolysis of PET pellets. We find that only ~0.6% of the amorphous phase ester bonds are hydrolyzed at the onset of MNPL release. Then, by combining a random scission model with measured amorphous spacings, we estimate that only ~15% of the stress transmitters in the amorphous phase, namely, bridges and entangled loops, have failed by this point. Thus, spontaneous fragmentation of the semicrystalline nanostructure occurs despite significant intercrystalline connectivity. We resolve this apparent contradiction by proposing that fragmentation can only occur when progressive tie-chain scission causes the material to undergo the ductile/brittle transition. Mechanistically, we speculate that the internal stresses responsible for material fragmentation are caused by processing (i.e., residual stresses) and/or sample densification induced by chemi-crystallization. We discuss additional factors that may affect our analysis and thus require further investigation, such as skin-core effects, preferential degradation of stress transmitters and/or recrystallization processes.

A physically interpretable precursor framework for sub-seasonal prediction of Northern Hemisphere flash flourishing

Flash flourishing describes rapid vegetation increases that can quickly reshape land–atmosphere exchanges and impacts on ecosystem, yet its large-scale precursors, circulation context, and sub-seasonal predictability remain poorly understood. Here, we identified onset-stage circulation regimes across northern extratropical latitudes (NEL; >30°N) using 200 and 1000 hPa geopotential height, and examined their regional expressions over eastern Asia, western North America, and Europe. Flash flourishing onset in East Asian was associated with a baroclinic circulation regime and was preceded by a North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) precursor at a four-pentad lead. In contrast, onset in western North American and European preferentially occurred under barotropic regimes, preconditioned by Great Plains soil moisture at three-pentad lead and North Atlantic SST at a four-pentad lead, respectively. Ridge regression forecasts revealed regime-dependent sub-seasonal predictability, with mean out-of-sample R 2 exceeding 0.3 up to lead times of two pentads in East Asia, three pentads in western North America, and four pentads in Europe. Together, these findings established a mechanistic and regionally specific framework for anticipating rapid vegetation greening at sub-seasonal timescales.

Small Co-doping induced magnetic and electrical transitions in single crystal CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3

CaFe⁢O 3 and CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3 single crystals were grown by combing floating-zone method with high oxygen pressure treatment. Both crystals show charge disproportionation of Fe (F⁡e 4+ → F⁡e 3+ + F⁡e 5+ ) accompanied by a metal-to-insulator transition as well as a crystal structural transformation from Pbnm to 𝑃⁢2 1 /𝑛. However, the slight introduction of Co significantly suppresses the critical temperature of charge disproportionation from 290 K in CaFe⁢O 3 to 260 K in CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3 . Different from the single antiferromagnetic phase transition as observed in the polycrystalline CaFe⁢O 3 , two sequential antiferromagnetic transitions are found to occur in these two single crystals with the Néel temperatures around 119 and 112 K for CaFe⁢O 3 crystal and 109 and 98 K for CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3 crystal, respectively. Neutron diffraction illustrates the formation of a spiral antiferromagnetic structure. Moreover, as the temperature further decreases to 65 K, a third magnetic transition accompanied by a second electrical transition is observed in the slightly Co-doped CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3 crystal. In conclusion, first-principles calculations suggest that the introduction of a moderate amount of Co and the peculiar spiral spin texture play an important role in the presence of such new magnetic and electrical transitions.

A Unified Beam-Dynamics and Hardware Design Framework for Hybrid Nonlinear-Kicker Injection in NSLS-II

Nonlinear kickers (NLKs) enable off-axis injection in ultralow-emittance storage rings by providing a strong kick to the injected beam while remaining nearly transparent to the stored beam. In hybrid schemes, a conventional four-kicker bump defines the injected trajectory, and the NLK reduces the first-turn action under constrained beam offset and optics conditions. Effective operation additionally requires stable and reproducible first-turn injection trajectories. We develop a compact action–angle framework that expresses NLK dynamics in terms of Courant–Snyder invariants and yields an analytical bound on achievable action reduction. This formulation provides direct design rules for NLK placement, phase advance, injected-beam offset, and kicker field profile. Within this framework, we identify the 8-wire NLK as a practical baseline and extend its design by relaxing the square-geometry constraint, enabling inward shifting of the off-axis field peak while preserving on-axis field and gradient cancellation. Application to the NSLS-II lattice shows how aperture, pulsed-power, and mechanical constraints combine to determine a coupled design solution. Multi-turn tracking confirms that candidate NLK locations maintain sufficient stay-clear (aperture-clearance) margin, while the optimized wire geometry reduces the required current and Lorentz force load. The results establish a unified approach for NLK-assisted injection design and provide a practical pathway for upgrades in diffraction-limited storage rings.
