Nickel-Cadmium Battery Operation Management Optimization Using Robust Design

In recent years following several spacecraft battery anomalies, it was determined that managing the operational factors of NASA flight NiCd rechargeable battery was very important in order to maintain space flight battery nominal performance. The optimization of existing flight battery operational performance was viewed as something new for a Taguchi Methods application.

Proper battery system design for GAS experiments

The purpose of this paper is to help the GAS experimenter to design a battery system that meets mission success requirements while at the same time reducing the hazards associated with the battery system. Lead-acid, silver-zinc and alkaline chemistry batteries will be discussed. Lithium batteries will be briefly discussed with emphasis on back-up power supply capabilities. The hazards associated with different battery configurations will be discussed along with the controls necessary to make the battery system two-fault tolerant.

Digitally-Engineered Impact Resistant Aerogel Composites for MMOD Protection (DIRAC-MP)

This project implemented a digital-engineering approach to optimize the impact absorption performance of polymer aerogels and aerogel-based composites for Micrometeoroids and Orbital Debris (MMOD) containment. We developed a curated materials database and a machine-learning framework to derive composition-response relationships, enabling predictive design and targeted material selection. In support of experimental validation, a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) test rig, specifically adapted for low-density aerogel materials, was designed and built in-house. This project accelerates the development of new aerogel formulations, producing candidate materials tailored for enhanced impact-absorption behavior.

Battery charge-discharge controller

Charge-discharge controller contains punched-tape programmer capable of programming 305 discrete steps in the battery load. The indicating instrumentation includes meters for ampere-hours, watt-hours, voltage, current, and internal temperature and pressure. It also generates analog signals for recording the displayed data.

Chapter 3: Thermal Exchanges and Temperature Stress

Thermal comfort during space flight is discussed. Heat production of man during space flight and wear loss as a mean of dissipating heat are described. Water cooled garments are also considered, along with tolerance for extreme heat and body heat storage. Models of human temperature regulation are presented in the form of documented FORTRAN programs.

Galileo Optical Experiment (GOPEX) Optical Train: Design and Validation at the Table Mountain Facility

The Galileo Optical Experiment (GOPEX) has demonstrated the first laser communications uplink to a deep space vehicle. This article describes the optical design and validation tests performed at the Table Mountain Facility (TMF) transmitter site. The system used a 0.6-m telescope and an optical system at coude focus to produce the uplink beam. The optical system used a pulsed neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:Yag) laser and beam diverger optics to produce the required optical output. In order to validate the optical design, a number of uplinks were performed on Earth-orbiting satellites (e.g., Lageos 1 and 2).

32nd Aerospace Mechanisms Symposium

The proceedings of the 32nd Aerospace Mechanism Symposium are reported. NASA John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) hosted the symposium that was held at the Hilton Oceanfront Hotel in Cocoa Beach, Florida on May 13-15, 1998. The symposium was cosponsored by Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space and the Aerospace Mechanisms Symposium Committee. During these days, 28 papers were presented. Topics included robotics, deployment mechanisms, bearing, actuators, scanners, boom and antenna release, and test equipment.

First principles nickel-cadmium and nickel hydrogen spacecraft battery models

The principles of Nickel-Cadmium and Nickel-Hydrogen spacecraft battery models are discussed. The Ni-Cd battery model includes two phase positive electrode and its predictions are very close to actual data. But the Ni-H2 battery model predictions (without the two phase positive electrode) are unacceptable even though the model is operational. Both models run on UNIX and Macintosh computers.

Nickel hydrogen/nickel cadmium battery trade studies

Nickel Hydrogen cell and battery technology has matured to the point where a real choice exists between Nickel Hydrogen and Nickel Cadmium batteries for each new spacecraft application. During the past few years, a number of spacecraft programs have been evaluated at Hughes with respect to this choice, with the results being split about fifty-fifty. The following paragraphs contain criteria which were used in making the battery selection.

P-band Antenna Array for NASA's Space Exploration Synthetic Aperture Radar (SESAR) Instrument

A dual-polarized, wideband, lightweight P-band (435 MHz) antenna element and array for spaceborne radar applications has been developed for NASA’s SESAR (Space Exploration Synthetic Aperture Radar) instrument for planetary synthetic aperture radar (SAR) applications. The antenna array is based on lightweight, low-profile antenna elements that form the building blocks of configurable “array panels” that can in turn be used to build larger arrays consisting of multiple panels. The element design combines a novel, mostly planar conductor antenna element geometry with a robust lightweight composite material construction.
